In this paper, an automated measurement system was proposed that uses a probe hung below a remotely controlled balloon to measure parameters of the acoustic field in the whole volume of a room. The study was conducted to estimate distortions that such system may cause in the acoustic field at the measurement point. The most significant source of the distortions will be the buoyancy element - one large balloon or a number of smaller ones. This paper considers different spatial configurations of spherical balloons with regards to alterations they cause in the acoustic pressure levels measured below them. Interior of a room without and with a group of spherical balloons was modeled using the boundary element method. Using a larger number of smaller spheres instead of a single large one did not significantly reduce the related distortions. However, using two spheres slightly decreased distortions when the distance between the balloons and the recording point was relatively small.

We present the construction of a dense, quasicrystalline packing of regular tetrahedra with icosahedral symmetry. This quasicrystalline packing was achieved through two independent approaches. The first approach originates in the Elser-Sloane 4D quasicrystal. A 3D slice of the quasicrystal contains a few types of prototiles. An initial structure is obtained by decorating these prototiles with tetrahedra. This initial structure is then modified using the Elser-Sloane quasicrystal itself as a guide. The second approach proceeds by decorating the prolate and oblate rhombohedra in a 3-dimensional Ammann tiling. The resulting quasicrystal has a packing density of 59.783%. We also show a variant of the quasicrystal that has just 10 "plane classes" (compared with the 190 of the original), defined as the total number of distinct orientations of the planes in which the faces of the tetrahedra are contained. This small number of plane classes was achieved by a certain "golden rotation" of the tetrahedra.

Spatial aperiodicity occurs in various models and materials. Although today the most well-known examples occur in the area of quasicrystals, other applications might also be of interest. Here we discuss some issues related to the notion and occurrence of aperiodic order in equilibrium statistical mechanics. In particular, we consider some spectral characterisations, and shortly review what is known about the occurrence of aperiodic order in lattice models at zero and nonzero temperatures. At the end some more speculative connections to the theory of (spin-)glasses are indicated.

Radio analytical technique as a non-destructive technique was used in the present investigation to trace the kinetics of ion-isotopic exchange reaction taking place in Duolite ARA-9366 (nuclear grade) and Duolite A-171 (non-nuclear grade) anion exchange resins. The kinetics data suggest that during iodide ion-isotopic exchange reactions under identical experimental conditions of 40.00C, 1.000 g of ion exchange resins and 0.003 M labeled iodide ion solution, the values of specific reaction rate (min-1), amount of iodide ion exchanged (mmol), initial rate of iodide ion exchange (mmol/min) and log Kd were 0.176, 0.383, 0.067 and 7.8 respectively for Duolite ARA-9366 resin, which was higher than 0.142, 0.353, 0.050 and 7.0 respectively as that obtained for Duolite A-171 resins. Also it is observed that at a constant temperature of 40.0 °C, as the concentration of labeled iodide ion solution increases 0.001 M to 0.004 M, the percentage of iodide ions exchanged increases from 49.20 % to 51.80 % for Duolite ARA-9366 resins; and from 45.20 % to 47.80 % for Duolite A-171 resins. The similar trend was observed for the two resins during bromide ion-isotopic exchange reactions. The overall results indicate superior performance of Duolite ARA-9366 resins over Duolite A-171 resins under identical operational parameters.

Na podstawie tekstów prozatorskich i poetyckich zamieszczonych w dwóch czasopismach wydawanych w latach 1932-1939 przez krakowski zakład wychowawczy albertynów poddano analizie przedstawiany w nich językowy obraz Adama Chmielowskiego – br. Alberta. Stwierdzono prymat profili związanych z jego życiem duchowym i działalnością zakonną: święty, zakonnik, założyciel zgromadzenia, mistrz i nauczyciel, opiekun ubogich. Na uboczu pozostają profile artysta i przyjaciel. Tworząca wymienione profile siatka leksykalna i dopełniające ją wartościujące pozytywnie określenia składają się na spójny obraz br. Alberta uznawanego za świętego jeszcze przed oficjalnym wyniesieniem go na ołtarze.
The article analyses prosaic and poetic texts published in the years 1932-1939 in two journals run by the Cracow-based Albertine educational facility. The analysis aims to draw a language image of Adam Chmielowski – Brother Albert. The researched texts reveal the domination of the pragmaticsemantic profiles relating to his spiritual life and monastic activity: saint, monk, founder of the congregation, master and mentor, servant of the poor. Such profiles as artist or friend stay in the background. The lexical network that founds the discovered profiles and the positive evaluative utterances that fill the network build a consistent language image of Brother Albert, who had been regarded as a saint before his official beatification.

Opis:
The $Al_{65}Cu_{20}Fe_{15}$ alloy has been prepared by conventional casting to the mould and by melt spinning or atomisation techniques. The melt spun ribbon was in the form of fragmented, brittle flakes, atomized powder has spherical shape with average size 17.2 μm. It was found that icosahedral I-phase was the main phase in all types of prepared samples. In the conventionally cast alloy the following phases have been identified additionally: $λ-Al_{13}Fe_4$, τ-AlCu(Fe) and $η_2-AlCu$. In the melt-spun ribbon the formation of $η_2$ is avoided, while in the atomised powder the I-phase coexists with small amount of copper rich τ-phase. In the cast ingot the I-phase form as a product of peritectic reaction λ + L, while in the ribbon and in the powder quasicrystal solidified from the undercooled melt as primary phase and next metastable cubic τ-AlCu(Fe) was formed at the interdendritic areas. Single I-phase grains of the sizes about 1 μm are observed in the ribbon close to the wheel side.

Opis:
A geometric study of twin and grain boundaries in crystals and quasicrystals is achieved via coincidence site lattices and coincidence site modules, respectively. Recently, coincidences of shifted lattices and multilattices (i.e. finite unions of shifted copies of a lattice) have been investigated. Here, we solve the coincidence problem for a shifted hexagonal lattice. This result allows us to analyze the coincidence isometries of the hexagonal packing by viewing the hexagonal packing as a multilattice.

Quasicrystals are structures that are not periodic but possess a long range positional order. They can have any rotational symmetry including those that are forbidden in periodic crystals. The symmetry is classified by the point group and the rank D. In quasicrystals, phasons as additional hydrodynamic modes cause correlated rearrangements of the particles. The number of phasonic degrees of freedom depends on the rank. For colloidal quasicrystals that are induced by laser fields, specific phasonic displacements can be realized by changing the phases of the laser beams in a well-determined way. The arising trajectories of colloids in two-dimensional light-induced colloidal quasicrystals with rank D=4 have already been analyzed in detail. Here, we analyze the colloidal trajectories in two-dimensional quasicrystals with 14-fold symmetry having rank D=6. We observe complex paths of the colloids consisting of straight and winding lines as well as jumps.

Opis:
Isotopic tracer technique using 131I and 82Br was used to characterize Purolite NRW-6000 and Duolite A-143 anion exchange resins. The characterization study was done by carrying out iodide and bromide ion-isotopic exchange reactions taking place between the resin surface and the external labeled ionic solution. For the two resins it was observed that under identical experimental conditions, the values of specific reaction rate (min-1), amount of ion exchanged (mmol) and initial rate of ion exchange (mmol/min) were calculated to be lower for bromide ion-isotopic exchange reaction than that for iodide ion-isotopic exchange reaction. Also during both the ion-isotopic exchange reactions, under identical experimental conditions for the two resins, the values of specific reaction rate increases with increase in ionic concentration and was observed to decrease with rise in temperature. For a constant temperature of 35.0 °C, as the concentration of labeled bromide ion solution increases from 0.001 mol/L to 0.004 mol/L, the percentage of bromide ions exchanged increases from 67.80 % to 72.76 % using Purolite NRW-6000 resin and from 42.54 % to 50.45 % using Duolite A-143 resin. However when the temperature was raised from 30.0 °C to 45.0 °C by keeping the concentration of labeled bromide ion solution constant at 0.002 mol/L, the percentage of bromide ions exchanged decreases from 70.68 % to 67.32 % using Purolite NRW-6000 resin and from 47.50 % to 42.25 % using Duolite A-143 resin. From the results it appears that Purolite NRW-6000 resins show superior performance over Duolite A-143 resins under identical experimental conditions. It is expected that the present isotopic tracer technique can be applied further as an efficient nondestructive technique in characterization of various ion exchange resins so as to bring about their efficient industrial applications.

It is known previously that bulk metallic glass compositions satisfy cluster formulae $[cluster](glue atom)_{1, 3}$ of 24 valence electrons as deduced from our cluster-resonance model. In the present work, it is further shown that compositions of Al-based binary and ternary quasicrystals are also explained by 24-electron cluster formulae of the types $[icosahedron](glue atom)_{0, 1}$, where the icosahedral cluster is identified from a corresponding crystalline approximant according to dense atomic packing and cluster isolation criteria, and the glue atom site is either vacant for an icosahedral quasicrystal or equal to one for a decagonal quasicrystal. Ternary quasicrystals are formulated with the same formulae as their basic binary ones but the icosahedron shell sites are substituted by third elements. The 24-electron cluster formulae are then the chemical and electronic structural units of quasicrystals, mimicking the molecular formulae of chemical substances.

Czochralski growth of cm size decagonal AlCoNi single crystals from Al-rich high-temperature solutions is described using native seeds oriented parallel to all symmetrically different crystal directions. Morphological observations allow first hints with respect to anisotropic growth rates. But only classical detachment experiments according to the original idea of Jan Czochralski reveal quantitative results of kinetically limited growth rates. Geometric conditions of wetted plane interfaces as well as aspects of constitutional supercooling affect the detachment experiments. Thus, in only one specific orientation of the decagonal quasicrystal quantitative data for the maximum growth rate could be obtained.

The composites were obtained by the Bridgman method through solidification of $Al_{61}Cu_{27}Fe_{12}$ alloy (numbers indicate at.%). The microstructure of composites with crystal matrix and quasicrystal reinforcement was studied. The crystalline β-phase was the matrix and the quasicrystaline i-phase was the reinforcement of obtained composites. The shape and spatial distribution of reinforcement fibres were specified. Some geometrical relations of the fibres arrangement were defined. Obtained composite samples were subjected to X-ray phase analysis, optical, and scanning electron microscopy observations, chemical microanalysis and the Laue diffraction.

We have constructed a generalized Penrose tiling by the cut-and-project method and compared its structure with that of the regular Penrose tiling. We derived the structure factor of the generalized Penrose tiling and applied it to calculate the diffraction pattern of a non-decorated structure.

We consider the problem of distinguishing convex subsets of n-cyclotomic model sets Λ by (discrete parallel) X-rays in prescribed Λ-directions. In this context, a 'magic number' $m_{Λ}$ has the property that any two convex subsets of Λ can be distinguished by their X-rays in any set of $m_{Λ}$ prescribed Λ-directions. Recent calculations suggest that (with one exception in the case n=4) the least possible magic number for n-cyclotomic model sets might just be N+1, where N=lcm(n,2).
