Opis:
The topic of the article are experiences defined as epiphanies (N. Denzin) and as crystallizing experiences (H. Gardner), being the turning points in biographies of famous authors. The writer is undertaking an attempt of defining the nature of these experiences and their significance for the course of their artistic work and life of selected authors, describes the types of epiphanies and crystallizing experiences as well as he gives two spectacular examples. Epiphanies and crystallizing experiences may constitute an interesting and attractive subject of biographical research in pedagogy. The scope of problems of such a research is outlined by the writer in the second part of the text and it concerns various issues of the formation of a mature biography. The departure point for these problems is a self-attempt of classifying these turning points in authors’ biographies.

Stanisław Szozda was born on September 25, 1950 in Dobromierz. During his career he represented the following clubs: LZS [RST – Rural Sports Team] Prudnik, “Legia” Warsaw, LZS “Zieloni” Opole and LKS [RSC – Rural Sports Club] “Ziemia Opolska”. His greatest successes include, among others: twice 2nd place at the Olympic Games in Munich (1972) and Montreal (1976) in the 100-km team race; twice 1st place in the 100-km team race during the World Championships in Barcelona (1973) and Yvoir (1975); 1st place in individual classification of the Peace Race in 1974 and twice 1st place in team classification in Peace Race (1973 and 1974) and 1st place in Tour de Pologne (1971). He died on September 23, 2013. He was buried in the Osobowicki Cemetery in Wrocław in the Alley of the Meritorious.
Stanisław Szozda urodził się 25 września 1950 r. w Dobromierzu. W trakcie swej kariery sportowej reprezentował barwy następujących klubów: LZS Prudnik, „Legia” Warszawa, LZS „Zieloni” Opole i LKS „Ziemia Opolska”. Największe jego sukcesy to m.in.: dwukrotnie 2. miejsce na Igrzyskach Olimpijskich w Monachium (1972 r.) i Montrealu (1976 r.) w wyścigu drużynowym na 100 km; dwukrotnie 1. miejsce w wyścigu drużynowym na 100 km podczas Mistrzostw Świata w Barcelonie (1973 r.) i Yvoir (1975 r.); 1. miejsce w klasyfikacji indywidualnej w Wyścigu Pokoju w 1974 r. i dwukrotnie 1. miejsce w klasyfikacji drużynowej w Wyścigu Pokoju (1973 i 1974 r.) oraz 1. miejsce w Tour de Pologne (1971 r.). Zmarł 23 września 2013 r. Pochowany został na Cmentarzu Osobowickim we Wrocławiu, w Alei Zasłużonych.

This article concerns the return of the literary biography in the humanistic fields, especially in Danish literary research, since 1980. During the New Criticism in the 1960s biography was regarded as a superfluous genre, and during the neoMarxism of the 1970s as a naive genre. But around 1980 it returned in the form of a number of new scholarly works especially in the fields of literature and history. This article points to two elements in the postmodern Zeitgeist which might have played a role in promoting the return of biography: first, the collapse of the grand systems of interpretation, and second a change in the ideal of scholarship in the direction of constructivism. Then the article investigates how ‘the new biography’ is distinguished from the old and outlines three points in particular: 1) a greater understanding of the significance of social structures; 2) an increased focus on contingency, incoherence and indeterminacy in a human life; and 3) a rising interest in the ‘ordinary’ human being. On a fourth point, postmodern biography has not come as far as one might expect. Although it could be more experimental and theoretically self-conscious, in fact it employs surprisingly traditional patterns of narrative, most of which are stamped by the Bildungsroman of the 19th century.

Bolesław Suszka arrived in Kórnik in 1951 with his newly wedded wife Janina straight from Kraków where they graduated from the Jagiellon University, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. Dr. Stefan Białobok (later professor), director of the Institute of Dendrology and Pomology, employed them both, assigning Bolesław to dendrology and his wife Janina to pomology. The institute was in the process of expansion planning a new building. During World War II Bolesław worked as a carpenter with a building team, so he acquired some knowledge about building. He was asked therefore to keep an eye on the building process to assure conformity with plans and solidity of performance. Being born in Silesia, Bolesław took this responsibility very seriously and molested the builders all along. Truly a very solid building was produced, which continues to serve us well to this day. Prof. Białobok supported Bolesław in his interest in woody plant seeds. He agreed to the establishment of a seed laboratory within the complex of the new building under construction. To acquaint himself with forest seed problems Bolesław was sent for 1 month to the Forest Research Institute in Warsaw to do some work under prof. Stanisław Tyszkiewicz, the renowned specialist on seed problems, involved in the topic within the framework of the International Union of Forest Research Organisations since the thirties. Bolesław considers himself a disciple of Tyszkiewicz. Seeing the work done in Warsaw and having acquainted himself with the needs of forest seed science, he requested that within the new building a phytotron be constructed so as to be able to maintain seed in various conditions of controlled temperature and light. This was introduced into the plans for the new building. The phytotron and the seed laboratory became his main concern for the next half century. He devoted his professional life to the study of woody plant seeds, particularly their storage and pre-sowing treatment requirements. He had the good fortune to co-operate in this field with leading world specialists from various countries, "his masters" as he refers to them and about whom he will speak in a moment. His achievements include identification for many species of the most appropriate methods of seed handling so as to 1) shorten the germination period, 2) increase germinative capacity, 3) obtain germination in the best time for it from the nurseryman's point of view, 4) shorten seedling emergence time in the nursery, 5) eliminate secondary dormancy, 6) prolong storage potential, 7) reduce demand for stratification and storage space. Numerous papers and books document these achievements. One of his books was translated into several languages. He observed that seed lots of some species come to storage facilities with various degrees of after-ripening and therefore in various stages of readiness for germination. The first need therefore is to bring them to an equalised condition. In this context warm stratification proved useful. It was his first major achievement to extend application of a warm period of stratification, prior to the normally used cold stratification, as a useful treatment for several species. It completes the maturation of the seeds, brings them to a common physiological state with the resultant equalisation of the time needed for cold stratification, and can also be used to suspend the stratification process and bring the seeds back into a state of full dormancy. Experience with the effect of the warm phase led him to the realisation that seeds are adapted to the natural conditions in which they have to germinate, immediately or next spring and that some even have a potential to extend germination capacity over several seasons through inductions of secondary dormancy, this latter potential being an adaptation to the fact that for some species abundant seed crops can be rare. All these natural adaptations when recognised can be effectively used when handling seeds. He developed technologies for identifying the stratification needs for various seed lots, technologies for the after-ripening of seed without a stratification medium, technologies for reducing seed moisture content to a level permitting long storage with minimal mortality, technologies for simultaneous seedling emergence under nursery conditions and many others. His expertise covers a wide range of species with both orthodox and recalcitrant seed. On the basis of his technologies special facilities were developed in the Polish State Forests. Bolesław Suszka became the world's internationally recognised leading specialist on woody plant seed, particularly on recalcitrant seed. He acted and still acts as a consultant for the construction of various seed storage facilities, co-operated in many research projects, participated in the work of many international organisations dealing with seeds, such as IUFRO and ISTA, and is involved in teaching seed science in graduate and postgraduate courses. Bolesław Suszka is a family man. He has 4 children and 11 grand children. A devout Christian, he works in the field of promoting natural family planning. He was drawn into the topic of family education by Fr. Karol Wojtyła, when attending with his future wife Janina a marriage preparation course run by the future Pope for Kraków students. Bolesław is an activists of the pro-life movement and a professional consultant in family problems. He authored several books with Fr. Karol Meissner OSB on the topic of preparing young people for family life. He has several hobbies, too. He is an amateur coin collector, a student of fortifications, an avid reader of history books and has a very keen interest in current political affairs.

The article presents a model of personalist biography that stands in opposition to the postmodernist one. The personalist biography model refers in terms of anthropology to Viktor E. Frankl, the founder of logotherapy (‘Third Viennese School of Psychotherapy’) and the key thinkers of the personalist movement: Karol Wojtyła, Mieczysław Krąpiec, Józef Tischner and Czesław S. Bartnik. Stressing the subjective aspect of biography, the personalist model allows for capturing the personal character of the created biographical portrait of a given person while also taking into account the postulates formed by the critics of biographical writing in its traditional and later structuralist forms, especially the postulates related to the requirement of biographer’s objectivity and neutrality. The personalist biography model also takes into consideration the insights of the French theorists on the inevitable involvement of the researcher in the reconstructed picture of a life and the considerations on the character of representation (by F. Ankersmit and M. P. Markowski).

In the article, the inventory of Antoni Malczewski’s belongings, the author of the romantic poem Maria, is published. The document was found in the archive of Jan Feliks Wilski, a nineteenth-century Varsovian notary. The only time the document was sourced was in the biography of Malczewski by Władysław Kazimierz Wójcicki in 1854 (1855). Besides presenting the document, the author collates the rediscovered list with a reading by the nineteenth-century biographer.

Autorka stara się ukazać sposób, w jaki podmiot biograficzny zostaje wikłany w rozmaite relacje, przede wszystkim zawodowe. Refleksji zostaje poddany również wpływ popkultury i marketingu na ostateczny kształt biografii. W tekście analizowane są najnowsze, XXI-wieczne biografie, z uwzględnieniem ich zmian w historii podgatunku sportowych biografii.
The article is an attempt to illustrate the method of subject creation in a contemporary football biography written during a career, after retirement as well as after becoming a professional coach/ manager. The author tries to present the way of entanglement of the biographical subject in a variety of relationships – mainly on professional field. Reflection contains the influence of marketing and pop culture on the final form of biography. The author analyzes the most recent twenty-first century biographies and contains their changes over the history of sports biography subgenere.

The article discusses five biographies of the poet that have been published in the past few years. A highly complex and contradicting figure of Leśmian, a great poet and unsuccessful notary public, a provincial from the capital Warsaw, a misanthrope with busy social life, still arouses interests among the public – the more so that his first biography written by Łopuszański and entitled Leśmian was published as late as 2000. Łopuszański, who has been working on Leśmian for twenty years, has published the results of his biographical investigations in his two subsequent books: Zofia i Bolesław Leśmianowie (2005) and Bolesław Leśmian. Marzyciel nad przepaścią (2006). In turn, Leśmian. Encyklopedia (2001) by Rymkiewicz is a different book being a ”personal” encyclopaedia, a somewhat patchy biography that focuses on arbitrarily selected entries chosen by its author, whereas Leśmian, Leśmian… Wspomnienia o Bolesławie Leśmianie zebrane przez Adama Wiesława Kulika (2008) is a collection of memoirs, a record of conversations that the author had with the inhabitants of Hrubieszów and Zamość who knew Leśmian personally in the 1920s and the 1930s – his colleagues at the Bar, workers of the notary’s office, his acquaintances, neighbours and friends of his daughters.

Author of the article explores the phenomenon of reportage biography in context of Pierre Nora's notion of „age of commemoration”. The crucial feature of this new genre of biographical writing is that the biographers focus on testimonies of people who personally knew the biographical subject instead of reading and re-reading documents gathered in the archives. Such an attitude has several consequences for the poetics of the biography. Biography becomes polyphonic as a scene of dialogue or confrontation of many different voices, different approaches on the subject. Biography becomes also ex-centric which means that biographical narrative concerns not on the subject as a central figure of biographical discourse, but delivers space for the witnesses to express their historical experience, to tell their life stories. Author of the article presents these matters by analyzing Bruno Schulz's biography Schulz pod kluczem and showing how this poliphony of accounts typical for reportage biography works in nostalgic frame of Budzyński's approach.

Niniejszy artykuł jest poszerzonym omówieniem biografii Pani Stefa. Książka Magdaleny Kicińskiej pokazuje losy i osiągnięcia Stefanii Wilczyńskiej, współpracowniczki i „prawej ręki” Janusza Korczaka, który w szerszej świadomości zapisał się tragiczną śmiercią w Treblince, dokąd poszedł razem ze swoimi ukochanymi uczniami. W takiej perspektywie Kicińska wyciągnęła Wilczyńską z cienia Korczaka – życie tytułowej „Pani Stefy” przez wiele dekad pozostawało przyćmione sławą „Starego Doktora”. Przy tym książka Pani Stefa pozwala pogłębiać rozważania na temat biografistyki i cech charakterystycznych tego gatunku, skłaniając do zadawania pytań teoretycznych: czy „biografia pedagogiczna” to pisarstwo dziennikarskie czy artystyczne?
This article is an expanded review of a biography entitled Pani Stefa (author: Magdalena Kicińska). The book shows the life and achievements of Stefania Wilczyńska, a colleague and ‘right hand’ of Janusz Korczak, famous teacher and educator, who was killed during the World War II, in Treblinka extermination camp, together with the group of his most beloved pupils. Kicińska literally took Wilczyńska ‘out of the shadows’ – her life was for many years overshadowed by much more famous Korczak. The book Pani Stefa also corresponds with one of the most interesting problems related to contemporary biography theory. What we can say about ‘pedagogical biography – is it a ‘journalistic’ or ‘artistic’ writing?

Maria Skłodowska was born on November 7, 1867 in Warsaw (Poland). Her parents were teachers. Maria’s mother has died in 1878 of tuberculosis. In 1893 and 1894, respectively, Maria was awarded master’s degrees in physics and in mathematics from the Sorbonne University. In 1895 Maria married Pierre Curie. In 1897 their daughter Irene was born. Maria investigated rays emitted by uranium salts. She hypothesized that the radiation come from atom and called this phenomenon “radioactivity”. In 1898, Maria and Pierre discovered new radioactive elements polonium and radium. In 1902 she isolated pure radium chloride and defined radium atomic mass. In June 1903, Maria supervised by Professor Lippmann was awarded her doctorate in physics from the Sorbonne University of Paris after presentation of the thesis “Investigation of radioactive bodies”. In December 1903, Maria was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, along with her husband Pierre and Henri Becquerel, for their work on radioactivity. In 1904, the daughter Eve was born. On 19 April 1906, Pierre was killed in a road accident in Paris. In 1910 Maria isolated radium as a pure metal. She also defined an international standard for radioactive emissions (curie), published her fundamental results on radioactivity and textbook of radiology. She also defined the international pattern of radium. In 1911, she won her second Nobel Prize, this time in Chemistry, for her discovery of radium and polonium. In 1914 she was appointed director in the Radium Institute in Paris. During World War I, Maria became the director of the Red Cross Radiology Service and set up France’s first military radiology centre. In May 1932 she has attended the official opening ceremony of the Radium Institute in Warsaw. On 4 July 1934, Maria Skłodowska-Curie has died aged 66 years in Sancellemoz sanatorium (France) of aplastic anemia.
Maria Skłodowska urodziła się 7 listopada 1867 r. w Warszawie (Polska). Jej rodzice byli nauczycielami. Matka Marii zmarła na gruźlicę w 1878 r. W latach 1893-1894 Maria uzyskała magisteria z fizyki i matematyki na uniwersytecie Sorbona w Paryżu. W 1895 r. poślubiła Piotra Curie, a w 1897 r. urodziła się ich córka Irena. Maria badała promieniowanie emitowane przez sole uranowe. Postawiła hipotezę, że promieniowanie pochodzi z atomu i nazwała to zjawisko radioaktywnością. W 1898 r., Maria i Piotr odkryli nowe pierwiastki promieniotwórcze polon i rad. W 1902 r. Maria wyizolowała czysty chlorek radu i określiła masę atomową radu. W czerwcu 1903 r. Maria obroniła na Uniwersytecie Sorbona pracę doktorską w dziedzinie fizyki pt. “Badania ciał radioaktywnych”, której promotorem był Profesor Lippmann. W grudniu 1903 r. wraz z mężem Piotrem Curie i Henri Becquerelem uzyskała Nagrodę Nobla w dziedzinie fizyki za prace nad radioaktywnością. W 1904 r. urodziła córkę Ewę. W kwietniu 1906r., Piotr Curie zginął tragicznie w wypadku drogowym w Paryżu. W 1910 r. Maria wyizolowała metaliczny rad, zdefiniowała międzynarodową jednostkę aktywności promieniotwórczej (curie), opublikowała najważniejsze wyniki prac nad radioaktywnością oraz podręcznik radiologii. Zdefiniowała także międzynarodowy wzorzec radu. W 1911 r., otrzymała drugą Nagrodę Nobla, tym razem w dziedzinie chemii, za odkrycie polonu i radu. W 1914 została powołana na stanowisko dyrektora w Instytucie Radowym w Paryżu. Podczas I wojny światowej, kierowała sekcją Radiologiczną Czerwonego Krzyża oraz utworzyła we Francji pierwsze wojskowe centrum radiologiczne. W maju 1932 r. wzięła udział w ceremonii otwarcia Instytutu Radowego w Warszawie. Maria Skłodowska-Curie zmarła w wieku 66 lat 4 lipca 1934r. w sanatorium Sancellemoz (Francja) z powodu anemii aplastycznej.

Piła jest miastem rodzinnym wielu znamienitych Polaków. Biografia najbardziej szacownego księdza z tego miasta Stanisława Staszica jest dobrze znana. Pantaleon Wawrzyniec Szuman — sławny prawnik i społecznik, oraz Antoni Kiszewski, pedagog, są także bardzo często wymieniani. Doktorowi Arnoldowi Drygasowi nie poświęcono tak wiele uwagi. Urodził się w Pile w 1876 roku. Jego życie pełne było tragicznych wydarzeń. Jego ojciec Antoni był nauczycielem w liceum oraz założycielem Polskiego Stowarzyszenia Przemysłowego. Zakres jego działalności obejmował kulturę, edukację i pracę na rzecz ojczyzny. Arnold Drygas studiował medycynę w Monachium, Giessen, Wurzburgu i Berlinie. Po uzyskaniu dyplomu lekarza zamieszkał w Poznaniu. Został asystentem na oddziale internistycznym Szpitala Miejskiego. Na przełomie XIX i XX wieku został skierowany na Kujawy, aby przeciwdziałać epidemii duru plamistego. Następnie wrócił do Berlina i w latach 1902-1903 kontynuował studia. Opublikował kilka ważnych prac naukowych. Jego kariera została przerwana przez wielką osobistą tragedię — śmierć żony. Brał udział w podróży morskiej dookoła świata w charakterze lekarza pokładowego. Po kilku miesiącach podróżowania dotarł do Indii, gdzie prowadził prace badawcze wraz z francuskim bakteriologiem Lacoque’iem. Szczególne sukcesy odniósł w badaniach mikroba żółtej febry. Wyniki ich wspólnej pracy okazały się później bardzo pomocne w wyjaśnieniu wirusowej etiologii tej choroby oraz roli komarów w jej przenoszeniu. W drodze powrotnej do Polski doktor Drygas zachorował na zapalenie płuc i zmarł w Afryce 14 grudnia 1906 roku.
The city of Piła was a hometown of many eminent Polish people. The biography of the most meritorious priest is well-known. Pantaleon Wawrzyniec Szuman a famous lawyer and national worker, and Antoni Kiszewski, a pedagogue, are also very often mentioned. Doctor Arnold Drygas has not been given so much attention and regard. He was born in Piła in 1876. His life was full of tragic events. His father, Antoni was a teacher in a secondary school and the founder of Polish Industrialists Society. His sphere of activity concerned culture, education and patriotic work. Arnold Drygas studied medicine in Munich, Giessen, Wurzburg and Berlin. After he had obtained the doctor s degree, he settled down in Poznań. He became an assistant at the internal ward of the municipal hospital. At the turn of the 19th century, he was sent to Cuiavia to deal with the epidemic of typhus fever. He went back to Berlin and in the years 1902-1903 continued his studies. Arnold Drygas published several important scientific papers. His career was interrupted by the death of his wife — a great personal tragedy. He took part in a voyage around the world as a doctor on board. After a few months of travelling, he arrived in India, where, together with French bacteriologist Mr. Lacoque, did some research work. He was successful in research of the microbe of yellow fever. The effects of their joint work were later very helpful in explaining virus etiology of that disease and the role of mosquitoes in its dissemination. On his way back to Poland, doctor Drygas fell ill. He suffered from pneumonia and died in Africa on 14th December 1906.

Professor Doctor habilitatus h.c.h.c. Z.H. Hellwig was born on 26 May 1925 in the small town of Dokszyce, not far from Wilno. Both of his parents were teachers. His father, Henry Hellwig, taught German and his mother taught Mathematics. Prof. Z. Hellwig was educated at King Zygmunt August Gimnazjum in Wilno. However his secondary school graduation certificate (’matura’ in Polish) he only obtained after the Second World War in Wrocław, in 1947. In the same year he enrolledin the Wyższa Szkoła Ekonomiczna (University of Economics) in Wrocław, from which he graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor’s Degree.

Worldwide known poet, Czesław Miłosz, was he a dissident? The idea of ‘dissidency’ usual-ly excludes appreciation. Yet Miłosz, being always in opposition to dominant tendencies, was always acknowledged. The article presents three periods of his life: in Vilnius, in Paris and in America. In catholic and conservative Vilnius he represented a “left¬ wing” orienta-tion. Afterwords when he worked in Polish radio, it caused his transfer to Warsaw. His leftist beliefs explain his work in diplomacy for a new regime. This continued till 1950 when Miłosz, terrified with Stalinism, chose asylum in Paris. He was being fiercely attacked both by conservative emigration and leftist French intellectuals. He was accepted, however, by Parisian Kultura circle – the most creative centre of political reflection. In The Captive Mind – soon acknowledged as the most important book in this matter – Miłosz masterfully diagno-ses “a new faith”. In 1960 Miłosz became a professor in the Department of Slavic Lan-guages and Literatures in Berkeley. It was there that important works analyzing nihilistic crisis of Western civilization and consumerism connected with Americanization were writ-ten: The Land of Ulro (1977), Emperor of the Earth (1977) and especially A View of San Francisco Bay (1988). His reflections concentrate also on ontological crisis and working on new reli-gious imagination. Czesław Miłosz was never a politician or oppositionist in a traditional sense of these terms. Nevertheless, he kept searching for the essence and roots of ideology, the style of life and faith, regarding the fundamental values he fiercely criticized Communism, Ameri-canization and the usurpation of faith by Polish nationalism. He was appreciated, but pro-tests against his burial at Skałka confirm how sharp and influential his observations were.

The article discusses the reciprocal interpretation of biography and literature. The subject of analysis is the biography of Jan Darowski, a writer associated for many years with the literary group „Kontynenty”. The past evoked in Darowski’s memoirs has a hierarchic structure – apart from the longer time sections constituting the framework for stories, shorter sections appear (e.g. events measured in days, weeks, months), which are complemented by episodes essential for the author. Darowski’s biography shows the tragedy of people who, similarly to the writer, got entangled in history and becomes a proper context for interpreting senses included in his works.

He worked as a director of Institute of Physics (PAS), the chairman of Scientific Council (IF PAS). He was also a member of Scientific Council IF PAS for a long time. He received scientific awards for his work and activity.

The article consists of two short parts. The first part explores rather theoretical problems chosen by the author during his current work. Among them is the titular problem – the crucial moment in somebody’s life, with all its consequences. The second part contains the opening excerpt from Bobkowski’s biography recently written by the author. According to the researcher, it sets up the biographer’s tone and the whole approach to the subject. This initial part of the upcoming book entitled The Escape is an example of the implementation of the ‘decisive moment’ concept in practice.

The aim of the article is to compare two ways of introducing the poetics of reportage in biographical writing, using the method of comparative biography, described by Richard Holmes. The author compares two biographies of Jan Rodowicz “Anoda” by Barbara Wachowicz and Piotr Lipiński in aspects like: the use of the poetics of reportage, the selection of archival materials and the approach to it. As a result, she describes two ways a poetics of reportage can be introduced in biographical writing. The first one is described using the example of the book by Barbara Wachowicz, in which a portrait of a national hero is being constructed with archival materials provided by his own family and statements made by the members of the anti- system memory community, that were responsible for keeping the memory of the Warsaw Uprising and the post-war lives of its participants undisturbed by the state’s propaganda. The second one is represented in a book by Piotr Lipiński that uses the biography of “Anoda” to deal with the problem of transitional justice as an unfulfilled dream of Polish society. From this comparison a conclusion can be drawn that there are many ways that biographers can introduce the poetics of reportage in their writing, depending on their aims and the role they want to play in their books.

This paper attempts to legitimize and distinguish the journalistic variant of biographical writing from other functional forms, including scholarly and literary biography. The presence of the term „journalistic biography” in the professional and amateur criticism is a manifestation of the readers’ awareness of genre theory and understanding a genre as a communicational convention. This kind of perception is closely related to the phenomenon called „horizons of expectations” and the particular pact made between the author and the reader. Focusing on Angelika Kuźniak’s works, the paper shows the specific role of a reporter being the biographer and a biographer being the reporter. The analysis of Kuźniak’s biographical books (Marlene, Papusza and Stryjeńska) and reportage (Mam bardzo cienkie powieki) helps to recognize the differences between the biographical reportage and the journalistic biographical story. Following this distinction, the paper suggests that the term „journalistic biography” should be considered as a name of the group of genres and discourses related to the functional styles or, in other words, a specific transmitter–receiver situation.

2013 marked the 50th anniversary of the death of Sylvia Plath and was commemorated by a flurry of new publications on the life and work of the late poet. The renewed interest in Sylvia Plath also revitalized the decades-old debate on the interdependence of her poems and her biography. This paper investigates and problematizes the way in which poetry in general and the work of Sylvia Plath in particular are read and interpreted. It tries to shed some light on the “biographical fallacy” which has for so long plagued critical approaches to her work and shows ways in which S. Plath’s own poetic method differs from the method of confessional writers such as Robert Lowell, in the hope of revealing why S. Plath’s work cannot and should not be approached through the prism of her biography.

The purpose of this dissertation is to present the significant achievements and activities of this chaplain in many areas of his life. He is not a person well known and has not gained a rightful place in the Polish historiography. The author of this dissertation attempted to analyze the role of chaplain in the functioning of the Polish Legions, the battle for Przemyśl and pastoral work in the Polish Army. Also considered the impact of the priest chaplain on the activities of the peasant movement, attempted to determine the degree of the impact of journalism Socio-political face of ideological and programmatic opposition government. Artykuł przedstawia zarys biografii Tytusa Filipowicza (1878-1953) – jednego z wybitnych działaczy niepodległościowych, dyplomatów i polityków. Praca omawia najważniejsze epizody z życia Filipowicza od czasów młodości do roku 1939, gdy na zawsze musiał opuścić Ojczyznę w wyniku najazdu wojsk Niemiec i Związku Sowieckiego. W artykule kolejno opisano jego działalność socjalistyczną w Zagłębiu Dąbrowskim, emigrację do Wielkiej Brytanii, aktywność w ramach Polskiej Partii Socjalistycznej oraz niezwykle ważną podróż u boku Józef Piłsudskiego do Japonii w roku 1904. Autor naświetla akcję polityczną, prowadzoną przez Filipowicza w czasie I wojny światowej i jego obecność w strukturach Departamentu Wojskowego NKN, Legionów, a następnie współpracy z Tymczasową Radą Stanu i Radą Regencyjną. Szczególnym momentem w życiu bohatera było kontrasygnowanie, wraz z Józefem Piłsudskim, depeszy notyfikującej powstanie niepodległego państwa polskiego. W dwudziestoleciu międzywojennym Tytus Filipowicz pełnił służbę dyplomatyczną jako kierownik Misji Specjalnej RP na Kaukaz Południowy, był posłem nadzwyczajnym i ministrem pełnomocnym RP w Moskwie (1921), Finlandii (1922-1927), Belgii (1927-1929) i w Waszyngtonie (1929-1933). Po przejściu w stan spoczynku Filipowicz brał udział w życiu politycznym II RP, a w 1937 r. związał się ze Stronnictwem Demokratycznym. Nieujęty w tym krótkim opracowaniu jest ostatni okres życia, jaki Tytus Filipowicz spędził na emigracji we Francji (1939-1940) i w Wielkiej Brytanii (1940-1953), gdzie był aktywnym uczestnikiem życia emigracji, członkiem I oraz IV Rady Narodowej, a także przewodniczącym III Rady Narodowej.
The article presents an outline of the biography of Tytus Filipowicz (1878-1953), one of the outstanding independence activists, diplomats and politicians. The work discusses the most important episodes in Filipowicz‘s life from his youth until 1939, when he had to leave his homeland forever as a result of an invasion by German and Soviet troops. The article successively describes his socialist activity in Zagłębie Dąbrowskie, his emigration to Great Britain, his activity within the Polish Socialist Party, and his extremely important trip with Józef Piłsudski to Japan in 1904. The author highlights the political action carried out by Filipowicz during World War I and his presence in the structures of the Military Department of the Supreme National Committee, the Polish Legions, and then his cooperation with the Temporary State Council and the Regency Council. A special moment in the life of the hero was the countersigning, together with Józef Piłsudski, of a dispatch notifying the creation of an independent Polish state. In the interwar period, Tytus Filipowicz served as the head of the Polish Special Mission to the Southern Caucasus, and was an envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary of the Republic of Poland in Moscow (1921), Finland (1922-1927), Belgium (1927-1929) and Washington (1929-1933). After his retirement, Filipowicz took part in the political life of the Second Republic of Poland and in 1937 he joined the Democratic Party. Not included in this short study is the last period of his life that Tytus Filipowicz spent in exile in France (1939-1940) and Great Britain (1940-1953), where he was an active participant in the life of exile, a member of the 1st and 4th National Council, as well as chairman of the 3rd National Council.

Transcultural Experience and Multiple Biographies as a Research TopicTransculturality refers to the traditional understanding of culture as self-contained, concentrated around its own center and producing clear borders. “Trans” signifies the act of crossing; it signifies overcoming such borders. It looks at phenomena, people, and notions that are not limited to one communicational environment, but are represented in multiple locations, or contexts. Or rather-they cannot be fully ascribed to one “culture,” because they exhibit, traits of both (or more) cultures. Culture studies often describe, also, people with “trans” life stories; it is not a matter of simple crossing of borders, living a bit in one environment and a bit in another. The point is that their sense of belonging is of a mixed, ambiguous character, and their identity is blurred. It is a question of practices that they draw from two or more sources, creating a peculiar amalgam characteristic of living “in between.” Transculturality, just like multiple biographies, means both partial belonging and dual belonging, which is very well illustrated by the case studies presented in the volume: they have in a way, varied roots, which means they bear unique, hybrid fruit. Doświadczenie transkulturowe i biografie wielorakie jako temat badawczyTranskulturowość odnosi się do tradycyjnego pojmowania kultury jako samowystarczalnej, skoncentrowanej na sobie i wytwarzającej wyraźne granice. Przyrostek „trans” oznacza akt przekraczania tak wytyczonych granic. Kategoria transkulturowości skłania do patrzenia na zjawiska, biografie i pojęcia jako coś, co nie ogranicza się do jednego środowiska komunikacyjnego, lecz występuje bądź przejawia się w wielu miejscach i kontekstach. Można też powiedzieć, że nie można ich przypisać do jednej „kultury”, ponieważ reprezentują cechy dwóch (lub więcej) wspólnot kulturowych. Studia kulturowe często zajmują się osobami, czyje historie życia mają taki właśnie charakter „trans-graniczny” charakter. Nie chodzi przy tym jedynie o proste przejście granic, życie trochę w jednym, a trochę w drugim środowisku. Istotne jest to, że poczucie przynależności staje się niejasne lub wielorakie. Pojawia się na przykład kwestia praktyk związanych z dwoma lub więcej źródłami wzorców, co tworzy specyficzny amalgamat życia „pomiędzy”. Transkulturowość, podobnie jak biografie wielorakie, oznacza zarówno częściową, jak i zróżnicowaną identyfikację, którą świetnie ilustrują studia przypadków przedstawione w trzecim numerze „Colloquia Humanistica”; można by rzec, iż mają one różnorodne korzenie, przez co rodzą wyjątkowe, hybrydyczne owoce.

The theme of this article has been suggested by Miłosz himself, who published in his Sub-jects to Let (the second part of Road¬ side Dog) the short essay Las [The Forest]. Author plaits the net of associations connected with the forest, which leads to reflection that this apparently obvious and exploited by generations of poets topic can still produce various contexts: geographical, natural, economic, political, cultural and literary ones as well as those of sym-bolic, mythical, historical and biographical character. This last context leads back to Miłosz, as a consequence of the reflection that the forest serves as a kind of symbolical frame for many plots present in his life and creativity. From a biographical and literary point of view, the poet leaves the forest. However, in 1997 (when Road¬ side Dog was published), toward the end of his long life, Miłosz returns to the forest in his poetry. He writes a separate text about it. There is a wide range of forest traces (literal, metaphorical, symbolical) between those two moments. They can be noticed in other books by Miłosz.

Choć zafascynowany tropikalną przyrodą i naturą, po podróży z Malinowskim w 1914 roku, która wpłynęła na jego malarstwo i inną twórczość, w lipcu 1918 roku Witkacy wrócił do Polski i opisał swoje cejlońskie doświadczenia w reportażu Podróż do Tropików. 2. Zagadka Prologu do Pentemychosa i Jej Niedoszłego Wychowanka. W archiwum Jadwigi Witkiewiczowej zachowała się jedna kartka z niemieckojęzycznym wierszem będącym fragmentem prologu zaginionej sztuki Pentemychos i Jej niedoszły wychowanek, która powstała na początku 1920. Zachowany fragment pochodzi prawdopodobnie z tłumaczenia, które Witkacy zamówił u przyjaciela w 1922, po spotkaniu w Zakopanem z panią Eckert, która obiecała polecić jego sztuki producentowi teatralnemu w Hamburgu. 3. Witkacy „dzieckiem podszyty”, czyli jak samemu ulepszyć kalejdoskop. Witkacy od dziecka był zapalonym kolekcjonerem. Zbierał laski i różne osobliwości, które umieszczał w swoich "albumach osobliwości". Dla kalejdoskopu, swojej ulubionej zabawki, napisał szczegółową zabawną instrukcję. 4. Grotowski i Witkacy. Jako student krakowskiej szkoły teatralnej Jerzy Grotowski planował wystawienie Szewców na Wawelu w 1958/59 roku. Ponieważ plan nie został zaakceptowany, Grotowski rzucił szkołę i wyjechał do Opola, gdzie został kierownikiem artystycznym Teatru 13 Rzędów. Zapytany o to, czyj portret powiesiłby w swoim dyrektorskim gabinecie, Grotowski wymienił Witkacego wraz z trzema innymi „męczennikami” teatru: Artaudem, Meyerholdem i Stanisławskim.
Four notes on Witkacy’s biography. 1. Did Witkacy Intend to Return to the Tropics? On 9 April 1918, Maria Witkiewiczowa, Witkacy’s mother, sent a postcard to her friend, Leon Chwistek’s sister, with an information that Witkacy was planning to return to Poland from Petrograd or to travel to Sumatra. Though fascinated with tropical wildlife and nature, after his travel with Malinowski in 1914, which has influenced his painting and other creative work, in July 1918 Witkacy returned to Poland and described his Ceylon experiences in the reportage Podróż do Tropików (A Voyage to the Tropics). 2. The Puzzle of Prologue to Pentemychos i Jej Niedoszły Wychowanek. The Jadwiga Witkiewiczowa archive contains a single page with a German-language piece of verse which is a fragment of the prologue of the now lost play Pentemychos i Jej niedoszły wychowanek (Pentemychos and Her Would-be Pupil), written at the beginning of 1920. The surviving fragment probably comes from a translation that Witkacy commissioned from a friend in 1922, after meeting in Zakopane with Ms. Eckert who promised to recommend his plays to a theatre producer in Hamburg. 3. Witkacy “Honeycombed with Childishness,” or a DIY Way of Improving One’s Kaleidoscope. Witkacy had been a passionate collector since childhood. He collected walking sticks and various curios, which he put in his “albums of curiosities.” For a kaleidoscope, his favorite toy, he wrote a detailed funny manual. 4. Grotowski and Witkacy. As a student of the Cracow theatre school, Jerzy Grotowski planned to put on The Shoemakers at Wawel in 1958/59. Since the plan was not approved, Grotowski dropped out of school and went to Opole where he became the artistic manager of the 13 Rzędów Theatre. When asked whose portrait he would hang up in his directorial office, Grotowski mentioned Witkacy along with three other “martyrs” of the theatre: Artaud, Meyerhold, and Stanislavsky.

The biography became a controversial book before it even began to appear in bookshops. The review, thus, discusses not only its content, composition and inconsistencies but also potential reasons for the negative response of the protagonist and some of his family. As it turns out, Katarzyna Kubisiowska’s book arouses controversies for several reasons: firstly, it seems to be written mainly to meet the market needs, and secondly, it concerns a person who is close to the author. Above all, however, the book shows the protagonist in a bed light without giving him an opportunity to speak for himself, which is even more poignant in the case of a writer who hides behind the masks of literature.

The article proposes a new reading of Album biograficzne zasłużonych Polaków i Polek wieku XIX (1901–1903) [Biographic album of distinguished nineteenth-century Polish men and women (1901–1903)]. It is proven that this collection of characteristically designed biographies and an unusual collective biography is an important work of Polish humanities of the turn of the twentieth century that can be placed in relation to both Thomas Carlyle’s hero concept and Jacob Burckhardt’s postulates of the ‘anthropologisation of history’. The three selected biograms (Klaudyna Potocka’s by Aleksander Kraushar, August Hiacynt Dziarkowski’s by Józef Peszke and Adolf Pawiński’s by Jan Karol Kochanowski) are case studies allowing for the reconstruction of the dilemmas and text strategies each time specifying the biographer’s unique workshop and the techniques of uncovering it.

The aim of this article is to present one of the varieties of biography, here tentatively defined as lunar biography. The specificity of this subgenre is relativity understood as a feature that shapes the way the characters — here the protagonist — are presented, consisting of the fact that the person is described as if the story about him or her was reflected in countless mirrors, or was possible only due to agency, that is, stories told about others. Kowalska. Ta od Dąbrowskiej by Sylwia Chwedorczuk is the subject of those multiple reflections. The characterization of this biographical text, on the one hand aims at presenting a detailed portrait of the author of Safona, and on the other hand, indicates how strongly it is linked to her relationships with others. Portraying Kowalska was conducted to better analyse the play between facts, opinions, or the peculiar paucity of Kowalska’s own voice. An empathetic biographer, trying to depict the individualism of her chosen heroine, often forgets that too much contextual information blurs the individuality of the writer from Lviv, and leads to situating her too strongly in the perspective of references to others. It results in in her story being hidden in stories of persons close to her, which may cause the loss of her individuality, or at least, it reveals Kowalska through a sum of biographies which do not belong to her.

As with most film subjects, the way Chopin has been presented in the cinema has been the result of a particular poetic (depending on the genre) and cultural context. The author classifies cinematographic Chopinalia on the basis of the former determinant, although without neglecting entirely, in some sections of the text, to treat film as a text of culture. The clear majority of documentary and educational films about Chopin have been made in Poland (as a form of promotion for the country, which does not boast too many icons of world culture). For both aesthetic and cultural reasons, the boundary between documentary and educational film has become blurred. Historical documentaries have used the same iconographic material, film shots and utterances, and also - for the purposes of musical illustration - the same Chopinworks as educational films. Cultural considerations have affected the thematic restrictions in respect to silver screen discourse about Chopin: in both genres, it reflects a rather stereotypical approach to the composer’s life story, with no room for the “Chopin mysteries” (e.g. his fascination with Tytus Woyciechowski) that have long been addressed in the literature. In experimental and animated film, the accent has been shifted - in keeping with the essence of those genres - from Chopin’s biography to his music. Nevertheless, here too the pressure of cultural (national) context has determined the choice of film material accompanying particular works. At the same time, experimental films have become anti-war or political films (as in the case of Eugeniusz C^kalski’s Utwory Chopina w kolorze [Chopin’s works in colour], from 1944 or Andrzej Panufnik’s Bailada f moll [Ballade in F minor], from 1945), whilst the presentation of Chopin’s music in animated films has been full of iconographic clichés and pleonasms (a Mazovian landscape with cleft willows, carriages speeding along in the background, dancing ballerinas, falling leaves and so on), creating a schematic visual code that is automatically associated with the compositions of the brilliant Pole. By way of contrast, it is worth emphasising that a few foreign experimental films (Max Ophiils’s La Valse Brillante de Chopin, Germaine Dulac’s Dysk 927) have illustrated Chopin’s music with images of “universal” objects (piano, gramophone, rain) associated more with music than with feelings, and not with Poland. The dozen or so feature films about Chopin have mainly belonged to popular cinema. For that reason, in the overwhelming majority of cases, the film-makers have turned to biographical facts which possess a suitable dramatic potential. Feature films about Chopin have treated history as a background - a costume in which to dress a tale about universal cultural myths: the myth of love (the relationship with George Sand, which has dominated Chopin films), the pseudo-Romantic myth of the great artist and the patriot myth (prime examples being Charles Vidor’s A Song to Remember and Jerzy Antczak’s Chopin. Pragnienie miłości [Chopin. Desire for love]). Some films - albeit few in number - have adopted a different strategy. One such picture attempted to exploit Chopin’s life story to exemplify Marxist historiosophy and a socialist- realist poetic (Aleksander Ford’s Młodość Chopina [Chopin’s youth]); another- Andrzej Żulawski’s Błękitna nuta [La note bleue] - is a truly original picture about the composer and, like almost every original film, tells us as much about the director as about Chopin himself.

The article presents biography understood as a representation, using Frank Ankersmith’s concept of „rendering justice” to the past, Philippe Lejeune’s referential pact, and Michał Paweł Markowski’s typology of four ideologies of representation. Biography as a representation refers to the very essence of the issue (representation) and textuality, therefore a dedicated subchapter is devoted to literary ways of creating the past. Finally, in paper’s ending part, the issue of re-presenting as embodiment of the author in a symbolic frontier is brought forward, along with the problem of the relationship between the author and the reader.

W artykule omówiono praktyczne sposoby wykorzystania listów w warsztacie biografa i w opowieści biograficznej na przykładzie pracy Jerzego Ficowskiego nad biografią Brunona Schulza oraz pracy Jerzego Kandziory nad biografią Jerzego Ficowskiego. Korespondencja rozumiana jest jako forma relacyjnej auto/biografii i kluczowy czynnik sprawczy biografii. Szczególnie podkreślona zostaje rola korespondentów jako informatorów oraz współtwórców biografii, specyficzne usytuowanie listu w archiwach (często prywatnych) oraz znaczenie historii samych listów – zaginionych, odnalezionych, poszukiwanych – w procesie pracy i w narracji biograficznej. List ujęty jest jako niezbędny materiał źródłowy (tworzenia kalendariów życia i twórczości), przyczynek do analizy psychologicznej i socjologicznej bohatera („autoportret wielokrotny”), źródło wiedzy o procesie twórczym i aktywności organizacyjnej bohatera.
This article discusses the practical ways of using letters in the biographer’s workshop and in a biographical story on the example of Jerzy Ficowski’s work on the biography of Bruno Schulz and Jerzy Kandziora’s work on the biography of Jerzy Ficowski. Correspondence is understood as a form of relational auto/biography and the key causal factor of the biography. The role of the correspondents as informers and co-authors of the biography is particularly emphasized, similarly to the peculiar location of the letter in archives (often private) and the importance of the history of the letters themselves – lost, found, missing – in the work process and in the biographical narrative. The letter is framed as an indispensable source material (creating a timeline of life and work), a contribution to the psychological and sociological analysis of the protagonist (a “multiple self-portrait”), a source of knowledge about the creative process, and the protagnist’s organizational activity.

The aim of this article is to analyse the political and mnemonic programme to be found in the last books of the British historian and thinker Tony Judt. The author of this article assumes that the final period of Judt’s writing, in which he produced Ill Fares the Land, The Memory Chalet, and the posthumously published discussion with Timothy Snyder entitled Thinking the Twentieth Century, is dependent on a kind of ‘art of memory’. For Judt, being terminally ill with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and thus condemned to immobility, this method became not so much—as in the case of its classic varieties—a technology of remembering, as a manner of recognizing and analyzing the contemporary world by turning to his own biography. The purpose was to construct a ’political testament’ for the Western world in a time of crisis whose roots, according to Judt, can be found in the supremacy that ‘economic’ thinking has achieved over traditional political thought. In a gesture reminiscent of the Stoic ‘techniques of the self’ described by Michel Foucault, Judt, by exploiting his own no less complicated biography and identity, tries to throw light on the complicated history of the 20th century, containing the sources of ‘our contemporary ills’. Biography and history thus meet here in a ’work of memory’ whose horizon and catalyzer is the perspective of death, and whose stake is the idea of a political community experiencing, according to Judt, a period of inertia.

Tekst ukazuje, na tle koncepcji czasu i jego edukacyjnych walorów, obraz życia w okresie PRLu, jaki zapisała na kartach kalendarzy Halina Semenowicz – prekursorka wykorzystania technik Celestyna Freineta w polskiej edukacji.
Thinking about time, its meanings and possibilities of living is a very needed as these considerations enrich the understanding of the human world and culture and thus create additional opportunity for the development of human personality and culture. There are various categories of time, ways of understanding and perceiving it. Focus of our thoughts, feelings and actions presents us with different concepts and shapes of time. The text shows the concept of time and its educational values based on life during the communist regime, described on the pages of calendars written by Halina Semenowicz - precursor of the use of Celestine Freinet’s techniques in Polish education.

The author performs a review of the understanding of the concept of biography model in social science using the wide tradition of German and Anglo-Saxon sociology. He further shows the relationship between the model of a biography, the model of a person and the course of one’s life. There is a discussion on the functions fulfilled by biography models in the lives of living individuals. The author also points to the changes that occurred in the organisation of contemporary societies and their significance for human activity modifying possible biography models. The article may inspire to undertake research on biography models in the contemporary Polish society including the research on the difficulties in their realisation in the lives of particular individuals.
Autor dokonuje przeglądu rozumienia terminu wzoru biografii w naukach społecznych, korzystając z szerokiej tradycji socjologii niemieckiej i anglosaskiej. Przedstawia relacje pomiędzy wzorem biografii a wzorem osobowym, przebiegiem życia. Omawia funkcje jakie pełnią wzory biografii w życiu aktualnie żyjących jednostek. Wskazuje także na zmiany, które zaszły w organizacji współczesnych społeczeństw i ich znaczenie dla ludzkiej aktywności modyfikujące możliwe wzory biografii. Artykuł może inspirować do badań nad wzorami biografii we współczesnym społeczeństwie polskim, w tym także nad trudnościami w ich urzeczywistnieniu w życiu konkretnych jednostek.

W nurcie współczesnych polskich spektakli biograficznych sporą grupę stanowią monodramy, inspirowane życiorysami słynnych osób. Jest to przejaw zainteresowania postaciami wyrazistymi, referencyjnymi – w przeciwieństwie do twórczości scenicznej końca XX wieku, z właściwą jej ekspansją bohaterów o nieukształtowanej bądź rozbitej osobowości. W artykule zanalizowane zostały monodramy-świadectwa i monodramy-rekonstrukcje. W pierwszym przypadku postać występuje jako medium nieobecnej rzeczywistości, świadcząc monologiem o sobie i o świecie zewnętrznym (to przykład tożsamości dialogowej). W drugiej odmianie monodramów dominuje ujęcie autotematyczne, co prowadzi do powstania sztuk meta-biograficznych (ukazana jest tożsamość performatywna, realizująca się w aktach kreacji własnego „ja”).
Monodramas inspired by the lives of famous persons constitute a large group of contemporary Polish biographical plays. It is a sign of interest in clear-cut and referential characters – in contrast to the end-of-the-20th-century stage creation, marked by a profusion of characters with an unformed or broken personality. This article analyzes monodramas-testimonies and monodramas-reconstructions. In the first case, the character acts as a medium of absent reality, giving testimony by means of monologue about oneself and the outside world (it is an example of dialogical identity). The second type of monodrama is dominated by an auto-thematic approach, leading to the creation of meta-biographical plays (a performative identity establishing itself in the acts of creation of one’s own “I” is shown).

In the scientific work of Professor Roman Wapiński (1931–2008), a prominent place was occupied by historical biography. This stream of his writing includes among others biographies of three important figures of the Polish political scene in the first half of the twentieth century: Władysław Eugeniusz Sikorski, Roman Dmowski, Ignacy Jan Paderewski, numerous biographical notes published in the Polish Biographical Dictionary, monographs devoted to political awareness and generational groups in the Second Polish Republic, politicians of the Polish political scene in the twentieth century. The analysis of the content of the following article boils down to the statement, which takes the form of the main research thesis (Roman Wapiński identifies with it), that the cognitive values of this genre of historical writing require further scientific research, and go hand in hand with the recognition of: “its citizenship, together with the recognition of the usefulness of some of its varieties for studying the behaviour and fates of larger communities […], besides, it is probably not so rare that this is the only way to more widespread historical education”. The article is based on selected literature on the subject. The specificity of the issue in question and the articulation of the research problem naturally influenced the selection and nature of the research methods applied. The text uses elements of discourse analysis, text analysis, historical and diachronic methods. From among the applied research techniques, the most useful turned out to be the analysis of the testimonies of political thought, the essence of which is to draw conclusions on the basis of source materials collected and relating to the undertaken research problem.
W twórczości naukowej Profesora Romana Wapińskiego (1931–2008) poczesne miejsce zajmowała biografistyka historyczna. W tym nurcie Jego pisarstwa mieszczą się m.in. biografie trzech ważnych postaci polskiej sceny politycznej pierwszej połowy XX stulecia: Władysława Eugeniusza Sikorskiego, Romana Dmowskiego, Ignacego Jana Paderewskiego, liczne biogramy umieszczone na łamach Polskiego Słownika Biograficznego, monografie poświęcone świadomości politycznej i generacjom pokoleniowym w Drugiej Rzeczypospolitej, politykom polskiej sceny politycznej XX wieku. Analiza treści poniższego artykułu sprowadza się do konstatacji przyjmującej formułę głównej tezy badawczej (identyfikuje się z nią Roman Wapiński), że walory poznawcze tego gatunku pisarstwa historycznego wymagają dalszych badań naukowych, idą w parze z uznaniem: „jego obywatelstwa, wraz z dostrzeganiem przydatności niektórych jego odmian dla badań zachowań i losów większych zbiorowości […], poza tym, nie tak chyba rzadko jest to jedyna droga do powszechniejszej edukacji historycznej”. Artykuł powstał na podstawie wyselekcjonowanej literatury przedmiotu. Specyfika omawianego zagadnienia oraz artykulacja problemu badawczego w naturalny sposób rzutowała na dobór i charakter zastosowanych metod badawczych. W tekście posłużono się elementami metody analizy dyskursu, analizy tekstu, historycznej, diachronicznej. Z zastosowanych technik badawczych najbardziej przydatna okazała się analiza świadectw myśli politycznej, której istotą jest wnioskowanie na podstawie zgromadzonych i odnoszących się do podjętej problematyki badawczej materiałów źródłowych.

The main aim of the article is an interpretation of novels written by Piotr Paziński – especially Birds’ streets (Ptasie ulice) from 2013, but also Guesthouse (Pensjonat) from 2009. In his prose the author is always searching for traces of Jewish identity and memory of the war-time in contemporary Warsaw (and its surroundings). His literary strategy is a kind of spatial obsession – he exhibits places: destroyed, ruined or removed as a sign of lost memory about Jewish history in Polish space. Individual identity of characters created in his novels (as well as possibly his own self-identification) is formed during the recognition of places connected with singular biography and common history.
