Opis:
The article is focusing on the Buryat local communities in eastern Mongolia and raises the issue of the role of local communities and local places of worship in building identity at the mesostructural level, which may be considered to be the basic level of identity references. These considerations are based on qualitative research conducted in July and August 2019 in eastern Mongolia in four Buryat local communities. The author tries to show that the use of the category of local communities as a starting point for analyses is a fruitful strategy for placing the studied communities in wider social, cultural and political contexts. The article is an attempt to use the categories related to the notion of local communities to describe Buryat local communities in Mongolia and to show how non-European examples of local communities can enrich sociological reflection on local communities and different types of identities. The title “Horizons of Identity” refers to the achievements of landscape anthropology, which inspired the author in the preparation of this work.

The study examined the relationship between metacognitive learning strategies and motivational beliefs, predicting academic performance of student teachers. The main aim of the study was to examine the predictive value of motivational beliefs and metacognitive learning strategies for students’ academic performance. In the study 307 student teachers of the Faculty of Education completed the revised version of Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (Pintrich & de Groot, 1990). Regression analyses revealed that a higher sense of self-efficacy predicted better academic performance and a higher test anxiety predicted poorer academic performance. The implications of motivational orientation for cognitive engagement and self-regulation at the faculty are discussed.

Opis:
Drawing on in-depth interviews with recreational gamblers (N=67), the paper focuses on superstitious beliefs and practices used by players of various games to influence or control outcomes. The study was conducted in the spirit of the interpretative approach formed by folklorist Alain Dundes (1961). Results suggested that superstition, in a variety of forms – signs, magic, conversion – was clearly an accepted part of gambling for most respondents. Although more pronounced in games of chance, superstition appeared to be more significant in the experience of interviewees who played skill games, creating “illusion of control.” Future research on the link between superstition and religion, and on the role of social networks in fostering and developing superstition-related knowledge is warranted.

Pytania dla polskich i niemieckich uczniów były takie same.
The main goal of the study was to get to know the views of Polish‑German youth about prejudices and stereotypes and their probable change for better or worse under the influence of cooperation between the given schools. The second goal was to examine the level of knowledge about selected issues related to culture, tradition and customs in Poland and Germany. The questionnaire consisted of 22 questions including 13 closed and 9 open, covering several areas related to national perception and polyglotism. Both Polish and German students had the same questions. The study presents the results of a total of 4 on‑line questionnaires.

The article focuses on the subject marital myths as stereotypical beliefs regarding marriage. It aimed at analyzing the most common and the most destructive for a marriage and a family marital myths, as well as at assessing its relation with age and number of children. The study employed an original Marital Beliefs Questionnaire based on the classification of myths by Lazarus (2002). The findings of the study – conducted on a group of 82 adults – show, that the conviction of the righteousness of marital myths is still relatively strong, especially if pertaining to beliefs, such as, “Husbands and wives should be best friends”, “marriage should be a 50-50 partnership”, “opposites attract and complement each other”. The strength of beliefs of the righteousness of selected myths remains in relations to the age of and the number of children had by the subjects. This relationship is particularly vivid in regard to myths “an unhappy marriage is better than a broken home” and “if your spouse wants to leave, hang on and fight”.

This article examines the contentious proposition that poetry has for the past few decades been experiencing a crisis, especially when it comes to student engagement. By means of the results of a study conducted in an English as a second language context, it explores teachers’ and students’ beliefs, attitudes and practices in relation to poetry. This article shows that the very discourse used to talk about poetry is a direct reflection of how much cachet it is ascribed in the classroom. It questions whether this inflation of cachet is responsible for the fact that poetry is not perceived as a genre that teachers and students opt to read for personal pleasure.

The need to better understand the supernatural is an ever-engaging aspect of any enquiry into the matter due to the changing paradigms of time and space and the existence of numerous misconceptions and observations concerning the same. Such is a case of the legend of U Thlen and the nongshohnoh phenomenon of Meghalaya, a north-eastern state in the sovereign country of India. U Thlen, an evil mystical being, is described in Khasi legends and recounted in Khasi folklore as an entity thirsty for human blood and never satiated. He was, however, tricked and captured by the Khasi people but never ultimately destroyed. As an act of deception – of reward and mainly revenge, U Thlen promised people riches in exchange for human sacrifice. An existing belief is that U Thlen was adopted by a Khasi household which saw the beginning of the nongshohnoh or the “cut throat” phenomenon. The surrounding belief about the keeping of U Thlen functions on the basis of prevailing social notions that human sacrifice offered to U Thlen equates to riches. While the legend of U Thlen has witnessed transcendence from narratives to lived realities over an incredible part of the history of the Khasi people, the nongshohnoh phenomenon has seen its fair share of criticism with time as well. It is in this regard that this study aims to (re)look into this very phenomenon as a living reality of the Khasi society. This paper also aims to look at existing beliefs and disbeliefs in U Thlen and the nongshohnoh phenomenon in order to arrive at an understanding, proper to the contemporary setting of the Khasi society, in the twenty-first century.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to examine the relationship between happiness and religious beliefs. THE RESEARCH PROBLEMS AND METHODS: The research problem is contained in the question: What is the relationship between happiness and religious beliefs in the light of the theoretical- cognitive analysis? The literature on the subject was analyzed. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The analysis of the literature relevant to the subject began with selected approaches to happiness, among others in relation to positive psychology. Next, the researcher referred to category – religious beliefs, and finally, the relationship between two the analyzed categories was examined. The process concluded with forensic attention that was focused on the conclusions resulting from this analysis. RESEARCH RESULTS: Happiness, determined by many factors, including essentially a person’s personality and the events that occur in his /her life, is linked to the religious beliefs. Religious people tend to be happy more than those without beliefs. Thus, it can be implied that there is a correlation between the categories: religious beliefs and happiness. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The conducted analysis of the research subject, eliciting aspects of positive psychology such as happiness, the sense of meaning in life, indicated an important factor shaping positive attitudes towards the life trajectory, which are religious beliefs. This issue should be dealt with in the future in the context of shaping a mature human personality, which is undoubtedly influenced by religious beliefs and their quality considered in the category of the quality of spiritual life, and the quality of life, in general.
Osoby religijne wykazują większą tendencję do bycia szczęśliwymi. Zachodzi zatem korelacja pomiędzy przekonaniami religijnymi a szczęściem.

Students' and teachers’ attitudes towards English as a lingua franca (ELF) have been a fertile research area in recent years. Nevertheless, Polish in-service teachers' views have been neglected. The present study addresses this gap in research and examines the beliefs and attitudes held by a group of eighty Polish in-service teachers towards ELF. The participants completed a survey that consisted of quantitative and qualitative questions. The data were analysed using both statistical and thematic analysis. The results obtained in the study suggest that teachers' awareness and views on ELF are rather negative and distrustful. They mostly see ELF as a useful and necessary concept, yet continue recognising native pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary models as their teaching goals. The data also suggest that a gap in teacher education programmes exists as the respondents either do not know or do not believe that Outer Circle Englishes are legitimate native varieties. Teachers also retain stereotypical views on Polish and native accents, perceiving the latter positively and the former negatively. This paper strongly suggests that teacher education programmes in Poland should ensure students and future teachers are aware of developments in the field of English Language Teaching.

This article is concerned with the relationship between adult attachment styles and generalized negativistic social beliefs (i.e. pessimistic expectations concerning human nature and interpersonal relations). Two general dimensions of attachment styles, avoidance and anxiety, are considered to be manifestations of an individual’s image of other people and of the self, respectively. We suggest that both dimensions may be a substantial basis for formulating negative beliefs about the social world. Firstly, we believe that a high level of negativistic social beliefs can be positively predicted by the growth of avoidance (negative image of others) and anxiety (negative image of self). Secondly, we formulate an expected interaction effect. Although the nature of such an interaction is ambiguous, it may be argued as having a synergistic as well as antagonistic pattern. These hypotheses were tested and supported (in favor of an antagonistic pattern of interaction in the case of the second hypothesis) on a representative sample of adult Poles (N = 853).

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to present Saint Catharine of Alexandria and Saint Andrew in the context of country-folk religiosity and traditions. Memorials of these two Saints in the liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church fall at the end of liturgical year and the beginning of Advent. The Feasts of these two Saints also became the focal point of pre-Christian folk customs and beliefs pertaining mostly to matrimonial fortune-telling along with some magical accents. The vigil of the Feast of Saint Andrew was devoted to matrimonial predictions of young girls, whereas, the vigil of Saint Catharine's Feast Day was related to the same for young men. The author used ethnographic data gathered during field work conducted in the Opoczno region in the years 1990-1993, and in the Opoczno and Radom regions of Poland in the years 1995-2005. The first section contains a short biography of Saint Catharine, further broadened by description of her role in county-folk customs and traditions. In the second section, Saint Andrew was introduced in similar manner. The Feasts of these two Saints are interwoven with a wealth of folk beliefs in supernatural beings both good and malicious, which are believed to dwell on earth and affect human life. Under the influence of Christianity these two Saints have been drawn into the circle of folk beliefs, with some reference to pre-Christian cults. In present day Polish folk culture not much is left of those old beliefs and customs, and Saint Catharine and Saint Andrew are merely perceived as Patron Saints of pre-marital chastity and specific professions. The example set by these and other Saints is relevant to the lives of the contemporary faithful thought, since it shows how one can boldly follow Christ and preach the Gospel.

The affective knowledge of God is this kind of knowledge that follows human affection. This knowledge comes about on two levels: on the natural human inclination to God and on the religious level of man’s orientation towards God. What is the nature of the affective knowledge of God? What does the passage of ex affectu circa divina in intellectum consist in? It seems that there are three matters:– firstly, since there is a natural inclination towards God in man (desiderium naturale vivendi Deum), man will be “restless” as long as he does not recognise or find God,– secondly, who loves God gains a new and more profound knowledge of Divine matters through con-naturalness and inclination,– thirdly, as a result of meeting with God and unification with Him, man experiences certain subjective states that cannot be expressed in words.

Although the COVID-19 vaccine has been recommended as the safer and more effective prevention for COVID-19 disease relative to other alternative medications, yet across the globe, many people are resistant to receiving it. Setting out to explain such a paradox, we conducted an online survey among a sample of Indonesians (N = 4758) when the World Health Organisation (WHO) granted authorisations for the clinical trial of various vaccines against COVID-19. The results revealed that participants’ support for theories that the COVID-19 vaccine is invented to harm their nation (i.e., COVID-19 vaccine conspiratorial beliefs) positively corresponded with the perceptions that international collaboration in the COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial is not aligned with their nation’s actual needs (i.e., the perceived assumptive international collaboration) and negative attitudes towards the vaccine. In turn, the perceived assumptive international collaboration was positively related to negative attitudes towards COVID-19 vaccine. We also showed that the positive relationship between COVID-19 vaccine conspiratorial beliefs and the perceived assumptive international collaboration in the vaccine clinical trial was more prominent among participants who were strongly resistant to take vaccines supplied by other countries due to national pride (i.e., vaccine national glorification).

The presented article reports on an empirical and comparative study that aimed at investigating the overall level of metacognitive awareness of Iranian and Lithuanian university students, as well as its weakest and strongest sub-components and related metacognitive awareness inventory (MAI) items. To obtain a detailed measure of the levels of metacognitive awareness of the two groups, with a total sample size of 755, Schraw and Dennison’s (1994) MAI was used. Data comparisons show that Lithuanian university students have a medium level of metacognitive awareness, while a low level has been detected in Iranian students. Upon examining the subcomponents of the knowledge of cognition component, the mean score obtained for declarative knowledge was found to be highest in both groups. Although in the Iranian group the lowest mean score was related to conditional knowledge, in the Lithuanian group it was procedural knowledge. Considering the regulation of cognition component, the highest mean score was obtained in the planning subcomponent in the Iranian students and in the evaluation subcomponent in the Lithuanian students, while the lowest mean score was obtained in the monitoring subcomponent in the Iranian students and in the debugging subcomponent in the students. The results of this study may contribute to improving the quality of teaching and learning.
