    The article analyses the representation of the newspaper medium in The Unfortunates – the fourth novel by the post-war British avant-garde author B.S. Johnson. The narrator’s job as a football reporter is discussed with reference to other themes and the unconventional form of the novel. Special attention is paid to the section called “The pitch worn”, which presents the process of writing the report. The aim is to see how the chapter resonates within the whole work and what it reveals as regards Johnson’s views on precision, honesty and liveness. Literary analysis is accompanied by references to journalism and media studies.

    The present article is an attempt to analyse House Mother Normal – a littleresearched novel by the British experimental novelist B. S. Johnson. Starting with a general discussion of the author’s literary tenets, the analysis then focuses on the novel at hand, special emphasis being given to the ways in which it maintains continuity with Johnson’s previous works, as well as to the areas in which divergence from the author’s oeuvre is visible. Following these remarks, a question is posed concerning the somewhat complex relationship between the characters and the narrator in the novel, the main problem in this respect being the extent to which the narrator, if indeed present at all, is visible in the text. Finally, the focus of the article shifts to the novel’s multivoicedness, which is then discussed in terms of Bakhtinian notions of polyphony and dialogism. The subsequent analysis of selected excerpts from the novel demonstrates that House Mother Normal for the most part eludes any easy classification and thus subsuming it under Bakhtin’s categories is as seemingly easy as it is problematic and disputable.

    Artykuł jest podsumowaniem czteroletniej pracy w archiwach liberatów – angielskiego pisarza powojennego B.S. Johnsona oraz polskich twórców: Zenona Fajfera i Katarzyny Bazarnik. Omówiona zostaje w nim historia obu kolekcji oraz ich multimodalny charakter, korespondujący z awangardowymi dziełami autorów. W perspektywie komparatystycznej ukazane są strategie porządkowania wybierane przez Johnsona oraz Fajfera i Bazarnik, a także podobieństwa i różnice w ich sposobach archiwizowania literatury niekonwencjonalnej.
    The article summarizes four years of my research conducted in the archives of liberatic avant-garde authors: the post-war British writer B.S. Johnson and the Polish artists Zenon Fajfer and Katarzyna Bazarnik. Tracking the history of their collections, I pay attention to their multimodal character, corresponding to the authors’ unconventional works. I illustrate how Johnson, Fajfer and Bazarnik organise their materials, so as to examine similarities and differences between their ways of handling avant-garde collections.

    For Bryan Stanley Johnson, a British post-war avant-garde author, space was a crucial aspect of a literary work. Inspired by architects and film makers, he was convinced that “form follows function” (“Introduction” to Aren’t You Rather Young to Be Writing Your Memoirs) and exercised the book as a material object, thus anticipating liberature – a literary genre defined in 1999 by Zenon Fajfer and Katarzyna Bazarnik, which encompasses works whose authors purposefully fuse the content with the form. The goal of this paper is to analyse the cityscape theme in Johnson’s second novel, Albert Angelo (1964), in which London is presented as space that accompanies the character in his everyday life and becomes a witness of the formation of his identity. The protagonist is an architect by profession, so special attention is paid to his visual sensitivity and the way the cityscape is reflected in his memories. Furthermore, Johnson’s formal exploitation of the book as an object and its correspondence to the content is analysed with reference to the metaphor of “[t]he book as an architectural structure” discussed by Bazarnik in Liberature.
