Opis:
The aim of this article is to present a specific interaction between a dancer and his/her body. Such a relationship usually emerges in later stages of dancers’ careers, and is accompanied by a small number of formal rules and standards present within a certain dance community. Therefore, it rather occurs among dancers of artistic than of sport genres of dance. Dancer’s relationship with the body is created in the process of negotiating and getting to know one’s body reactions to one’s activities. The body is treated by a dancer as an actor who makes own decisions, and who is sometimes not letting the dancer to fulfill his/ her intentions, for example, these connected with social norms in certain social groups. In order to show and to compare how diverse one’s interactions with one’s body might be, I will also discuss an issue of relation with one’s own body in the autotherapeutic process. Presentation of both these problems also demonstrates two different ways of communicating with one’s own body. This article presents outcomes of a qualitative research on social construction of embodiment, which was conducted with the use of Grounded Theory Methodology and qualitative research techniques, such as: unstructured interviews, video and photo elicited interviews, analysis of visual data, analytic autoethnography, participant and non-participant observation and desk research.

Artykuł jest namysłem badacza nad jego działalnością podjętą w ramach zrealizowanego projektu sytuującego się w perspektywie badań rekonstrukcyjnych. W obszarze zainteresowania znalazły się doświadczone przez niego trudności i wątpliwości, a także próby odnajdowania się w pracy z metodologią teorii ugruntowanej w danych. Zasygnalizowane zostały następujące kwestie: wybór orientacji badawczej i jego konsekwencje, rola badacza, znaczenie literatury i konsultacji z doświadczonymi badaczami dla działalności badawczej. Przedstawiony został również (za)rys zrealizowanego projektu. Inspiracją do stworzenia ramy konstrukcyjnej tekstu była autoetnografia analityczna.
The article provides a researcher’s reflection on her activity undertaken while conducting a project from the reconstruction research perspective. Difficulties and doubts experienced by the researcher and the attempts to adapt to working with the methodology of grounded theory are in the centre of attention here. The follow- ing issues were touched upon: a choice of a research orientation and its consequences, a researcher’s role, the importance of literature, and consultations with researchers experienced in this area. An outline of the carried out project was also presented here. Analytic autoethnography constituted the inspiration for establishing a constructive framework.

Identity politics have been of considerable interest to the qualitative research tradition as researchers have speculated on the extent to which identity and positionality matter in the field. In this autoethnography, I analyze private writings I composed while studying musicians’ life course trajectories in musical careers, paying particular attention to the methodological implications of my fieldwork decisions. I concentrate on: 1) issues of access, 2) identity politics, and 3) the ethics of relationships in the field. I analyze the extent to which I negotiated several (sometimes conflicting) ways I presented my identity in different settings and among different populations. My presentation of self-strategies – sometimes intentional, other times haphazard – allowed me successful entrée to the music world, though I remained an outsider within. I conclude with methodological implications highlighting the ways researchers’ identities may influence the research process and suggestions for qualitative researchers to consider in future studies.

W październiku 2020 r. ogłoszono wyrok Trybunału Konstytucyjnego, który drastycznie ograniczył możliwość dokonywania aborcji, nawet w przypadku poważnych i śmiertelnych wad płodu. Orzeczenie to wywołało niespotykane od 1989 r. protesty społeczne, które odbywały się w dużych i małych miejscowościach w całym kraju. Postanowiłam przyjrzeć się, stosując narzędzia antropologii zaangażowanej, autoetnografii i folklorystyki, sposobom komunikacji protestujących osób i procesom wytwarzania protestacyjnej wspólnoty. W tekście przedstawiam i analizuję trzy główne płaszczyzny działania folkloru protestacyjnego: słowno-wizualną zawartą na kartonowych transparentach, akustyczną i dotyczącą ruchu, ucieleśnioną.
In October 2020, the Constitutional Tribunal announced a verdict which drastically limited the possibility of abortion, even in the case of serious or lethal defects of the foetus. This ruling sparked social protests unprecedented since 1989, which took place in large and small towns across the country. Using the tools of engaged anthropology, auto-ethnography, and folklore, I decided to look at the ways of communication of protesters and the processes of creating a protest community. In the text, I present and analyse three main spheres of action of protest folklore: the verbal and visual sphere contained on cardboard banners, the acoustic sphere and the embodied sphere expressed through movement.

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Polish government introduced a number of restrictions related to the use of public spaces. During a two-month period – from March to April 2020 – the authorities implemented provisions regulating “social distance,” imposing relevant limitations, introducing the obligation to cover mouth and nose, restrict- ing movement in public spaces, limiting the number of people in shops, public facilities and public transport, and later either eased or lifted those restrictions. An ethnographic study of the consequences of these restrictions, i.e., their social impact, requires both special approach and tools. In this paper, I present my efforts to develop such an approach, based on the combination of insights from Edward T. Hall’s proxemics and Marc Augé’s non-place theory, as well as phenomenology of the body and autoethnography. Based on autoethnographic notes, I present the outcomes of my endeavor – the description of my embodied experience of pandemic restrictions in non-places.

Prezentowany esej, w którym Profesor Arthur Bochner dokonał krótkiego przeglądu znaczeń nadawanych trwającemu prawie pół wieku doświadczeniu pracy na uczelni, został zaprezentowany audytorium złożonemu z koleżanek i kolegów, studentów oraz naukowców z uniwersytetu. Podkreślono w nim improwizację obecną w akademickim życiu zawodowym, przywołano anegdoty o ważnych postaciach, które Profesor miał okazję obserwować i z którymi często pracował. Wskazano również na często destabilizujące, a prawie zawsze poruszające wymiary życia uniwersyteckiego, których doświadczył, krocząc po uniwersyteckiej drodze. Zainspirowany przez wyzwania stojące przed całościową edukacją osoby, umysłu i serca, jak również pełen pasji w odniesieniu do etycznych, emocjonalnych i literackich potrzeb nauk humanistycznych, Profesor przedstawia plan dalszych badań nad samowyjaśniającymi, ewokacyjnymi i potencjalnie transformującymi opowieściami.  
In this essay, originally presented to an audience of colleagues, students, and university faculty, I briefly review the meanings I ascribe to my experience of nearly half a century as a university faculty member. I emphasize the improvisational quality of professorial life, the amusing characters I was able to observe and with whom I often worked, and several unsettling and agitating dimensions of university life that I experienced along the way. Inspired by the challenge of educating the whole person, mind and heart, and passionate about the moral, emotional, and literary urgency of the human sciences, I plan to continue to focus on self-clarifying, evocative, and potentially transforming stories.

This study is about the importance of African authors in literature and the creation of an adult education course on African novels. It begins with my acknowledgement of a historian named David Olusoga and a novelist named Ben Okri. The first, Olusoga, produced a TV programme that gave me confidence that my idea for a course entitled African Novels could be successful. The second, Okri, wrote about how African Literature was the future. I will explain how I picked up their ideas and used them as a rationale for the course. The Workers’ Educational Association, for whom I produced the course, has a long history of student involvement. I have a great interest in both student autonomy and students taking part in their own learning. In my tutor role, I wanted African Novels to begin with a general idea about African authors and move to more specific books as the course proceeded. To this end, I began the course with an overview of the subject and a statement from the African novelist Chinua Achebe – to the effect that when you begin to identify with someone of a different colour and who even eats different food from you, then literature is really performing its wonders. I hoped that the students would carry out this identification. The paper will use auto/biographical methods, as defined in Merrill and West (2009, p. 5), to tell the story of how this course was created during a teaching space when my adult education centre was closed by the pandemic. The course could only be delivered once tutors and students could meet again face to face, and I give an example of this. The paper will be supported by reference to my own extensive research on bibliotherapy and by an account of how I used autoethnography as a research method. Both of these ideas enabled the course to develop and grow through reading, research, practice and reflection, as I will show.

Death and dying offer an important paradox for investigation. Both are feared and to be avoided but also generate considerable reverence, curiosity and mystery. The latter is investigated through thick ethnographic data collected in a Thai Buddhist hospice and the following pages provide some description of an alternative cultural-spiritual framing of anticipating death. The former part of this paradox is explored using detailed autoethnographic-autobiographical data arising from the cognitiveemotional conflict between the researcher’s cultural schemata and the phenomena in which the research process is embedded. Sociological speculations are offered as to the value and insights of this methodological approach and to anticipating dying as an important phenomenon for further inquiry into everyday social life.

The article examines the narrative of the diary „My Siberian Year” written by one of the first women-anthropologists-Maria Czaplicka. There is a notable absence of discussion about her achievements, despite the fact that her book significantly exceeds the frames of the anthropological narrative of her times. In this paper the perspective refers to the experience of strangeness/otherness as a constitutive part of any fieldwork. This category may be analyzed within different dimensions, which concurrently shed light on the nature of the relationships between people, culture and environment.

The aim of the text is to present the use of the analytical autoethnographic method in studying the “art&science” phenomenon. It is attempt to show that the role of the artist can combine with the role of the ethnographer. The objects of study are the multilevel relations emerging during the realization of artistic projects in biological laboratories. These relations concern both humans (the artist, the scientists) and non-humans (laboratory organisms, equipment). On the basis of actor-network theory, the author presents how the liminal status of ethnographic research is modified when it connects with art. The form of conducting the research is both an example of activity in the art and science field and a new methodological proposal for the study of science and technology.

I became and have remained Black in Canada by interacting with Blacks. Altercasting (the “push” from the larger society) moved me into interacting intentionally with Blacks, interacting with Blacks helped make me Black by immersing me in the Black experience, and studying Blacks helped anchor me within the Black community by giving me an understanding of what it means to be Black. In this paper, which is based on autoethnography, I offer a brief overview of the concept of Blackness in Canada and then I discuss the key ways in which my Black identity was developed and is sustained. The key mechanisms discussed are altercasting, interacting with Blacks, and studying the Black community.

Celem artykułu jest wprowadzenie pojęciowego ładu w obszarze terminologii oraz opisu praktycznych zastosowań autoetnografii. Autorka na podstawie przeglądu badań posługujących się tą praktyką badawczą usiłuje zrekonstruować wymiary, w jakich występuje autoetnografia we współczesnych badaniach społecznych. Wyróżnia trzy poziomy, na których wykorzystywana jest autoetnografia: (1) poziom wytwarzania danych, na którym autoetnografia pozostaje wyłącznie techniką otrzymywania informacji, (2) poziom rozwiązywania problemów badawczych, na którym autoetnografia funkcjonuje jako metoda lub strategia badawcza oraz (3) poziom epistemologiczny, dotyczący samej filozofii uprawiania badań, na którym autoetnografia jawi się jako nowy paradygmat badań społecznych. Przyczyny zainteresowania autoetnografią autorka widzi w przemianach samej humanistyki (w postmodernistycznym zwrocie oraz zwrocie performatywnym). Omawia kolejno powody, dla których w naukach społecznych konieczne jest odwoływanie się do perspektywy uczestnika. Uściśla zakresy znaczeniowe pojęcia „autoetnografia”, nawiązując do historii zastosowań tego pojęcia. Autorka przytacza liczne przykłady aplikacji tej praktyki badawczej, omawiając także uwarunkowania krytyki kierowanej pod jej adresem. Rozważając metodologiczny status autoetnografii, autorka wskazuje na zasadnicze pęknięcie paradygmatyczne pomiędzy analitycznym a ewokatywnym ujmowaniem autoetnografii. Rozdziela ono światy praktyk badawczych na scjentystyczny i przeintelektualizowany program opisu rzeczywistości społecznej wyrażający tendencje analityczne oraz ewokatywny program pielęgnowania żywego doświadczenia, wyrażający tendencję do współodczuwania i doświadczania współobecności Innych.
The goal of the paper is an introduction of conceptual order to existing categories of autoethnography research. The author tries to reconstruct dimensions in which autoethnography is used in contemporary social investigation basing on the review of studies referring to autoethnography. She distinguishes three levels on which autoethnography is applied: (1) the level of techniques of data gathering, (2) the level of investigation method or strategy, (3) the epistemological level referring to philosophy of social research in which autoethnography appears as new paradigm of social research. The reasons of great popularity of autoethnography come from metamorphosis of the humanities itself (after postmodern turn and performative turn). The author discusses reasons of necessity to appeal to approach of “participant’s perspective” in the social sciences. She specifies denotations of the term “autoethnography” with reference to history of its applications and enumerates conditions of critique referring to this kind of investigation practice. Discussing methodological status of autoethnography, the author indicates fundamental paradigmatic split between analytic and evocative autoethnography, which separate these two worlds of research practices. The first one is marked by scientistic and excessively intellectual agenda of reality description. The second one accents emotional, intimate involvement and embodied participation into the collaborative process of knowledge creation.

Artykuły wchodzące w skład numeru rozmieszczone są w dwóch częściach: Część I. Problemy paradygmatyczne i metodologiczne zastosowania autoetnografii oraz Część II. Aplikacyjny wymiar autoetnografii. W opracowaniu tym starano się oddać napięcie istniejące pomiędzy dwoma głównymi nurtami uprawiania autoetnografii: paradygmatem autoetnografii ewokatywnej (evocative–emotional autoethnography) oraz autoetnografii analitycznej (analytic autoethnography) poprzez odwołanie do wypowiedzi kluczowych dla tych ujęć postaci: Carolyn Ellis oraz Leona Andersona. Prezentowany jest unikalny wywiad z Carolyn Ellis oraz pierwsze polskie tłumaczenie kluczowego artykułu Leona Andersona, w którym wprowadza on do obiegu naukowego pojęcie „autoetnografii analitycznej”. Autoetnografia wnosi do procesu badawczego wrażliwość samego badacza i przyczynia się do zrozumienia roli jego refleksyjności w procesie wytwarzania wiedzy. Jak żadna inna metoda socjologiczna w wyrafinowany sposób odsłania wielowymiarowość pozycji badacza. W tym sensie można postrzegać autoetnografię zarówno jako część walidacji i uwiarygodnienia procesu badawczego jak i szerzej jako składnik procesu humanizacji nauki. Publikacja niniejsza jest odpowiedzią na rosnące zainteresowanie autoetnografią jako praktyką badawczą oraz próbą wypełnienia publikacyjnej luki na ten temat w literaturze polskojęzycznej.
The subject of the issue is methodological and application aspects of autoethnography. The articles contained in Autoethnography – technique, method, or new paradigm? are put in two parts: Part I: Paradigmatic and methodological problems of autoethnography, and Part II. Application dimension of autoethnography. The intention of the editor was to elucidate the tension between evocative and analytic autoethnography – two main streams of autoethnographical practices – through referring to the statements of key personalities representing these two paradigms: Carolyn Ellis and Leon Anderson. The effect of these efforts is an unique interview with Carolyn Ellis and the first polish translation of the key article of Leon Anderson, in which he introduces the term “analytic autoethnography” to the scientific circulation. Autoethnography contributes to the research process the sensitivity of the researcher, and allows to understand the role of investigator’s reflexivity in the process of knowledge production. No other sociological methods gives possibility of revealing multidimensional positions of the researcher in the research process. This way we can see autoethnography as a part of research process validation and legitimization, alike as a major constituent of the humanization of science process. This issue is a response to growing interest in autoethnography as a research practice, as well as an attempt to fill publication gap about autoethnography in Polish literature.

Opis:
This text is a methodological diary—a meta-autoethnography, an attempt to report on the course and formation of auto-reflection on various aspects of autoethnography in the broad sense. It is the reinterpretation of selected fragments of the author’s own texts of an autoethnographic profile, and a description of the process by which the concept of the essay emerged. It addresses the role of autoethnography in the anthropological cognitive process and autoethnography’s contemporary methodological status. The author intends to show how his reflections were shaped and to open the door to the scholar’s “kitchen” by describing how the questions, phrases, and ideas inscribed in his notebook served as departure points for further reflection and representation in the essay. He tells how his thoughts were structured, what reading and ideas inspired him, and finally, how these often laconic, fragmentary, and disorganized notes and observations brought together the issues and themes worthy of anthropological expansion and consideration.
