Opis:
The study investigates the physical and chemical properties of fly ash and bottom ash from a power plant ELCHO in Chorzów, Poland. Coal combustion products generated in the process of combustion in circulating fluidized beds (CFBs) are considerably different from fly and bottom ashes obtained from dust furnaces and multi-layer ones. The composition of the iron-bearing phase in the waste of circulating fluidized bed combustion was determined using Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) methods.

Opis:
The objective of the present study is to assess the efficiency of fly ash and fly ash agglomerates to remove arsenic(III) from aqueous solution. The maximum static uptakes were achieved to be 13.5 and 5.7 mgAs(III)/adsorbent for nonagglomerated material and agglomerated one, respectively. Isotherm studies showed good fit with the Langmuir (fly ash) and the Freundlich (fly ash agglomerates) isotherm models. Kinetic studies indicated that the sorption of arsenic on fly ash and its agglomerates follows the pseudo-second-order (PSO) chemisorption model (R2 = 0.999). Thermodynamic parameters revealed an endothermic nature of As(III) adsorption on such adsorbents. The adsorption results confirmed that fly ash and its agglomerates can be used for As(III) removal from aqueous solutions. Fly ash can adsorb more arsenic(III) than agglomerates, which are easier to use, because this material is less dusty and easier to separate from solution.

Large quantities of paper and wood waste are generated every day, the disposal of these waste products is a problem because it requires huge space for their disposal. The possibility of using these wastes can mitigate the environmental problems related to them. This study presents an investigation on the feasibility of inclusion of waste paper ash (WPA) or wood ash (WA) as replacement materials for fly ash (FA) class F in preparation geopolymer concrete (GC). The developed geopolymer concretes for this study were prepared at replacement ratios of FA by WPA or WA of 25, 50, 75 and 100% in addition to a control mix containing 100% of FA. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solutions and sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) are used as alkaline activators with 1M and 10M of sodium hydroxide solution. The geopolymer concretes have been evaluated with respect to the workability, the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and flexural strength. The results indicated that there were no significant differences in the workability of the control GC mix and the developed GC mixes incorporating WPA or WA. Also, the results showed that, by incorporating of 25–50% PWA or 25% WA, the mechanical properties (compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and flexural strength) of GC mixes slightly decreased. While replacement with 75–100% WPA or with 50–100% WA has reduced these mechanical properties of GC mixes. As a result, there is a feasibility of partial replacement of FA by up to 50% WPA or 25% WA in preparation of the geopolymer concrete.

The study compared coal fly and bottom ashes for their ability to inactivate metals and lead to soil remediation. Soil was artificially contaminated with Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd at five degrees. Next, both ashes were added at five rates: 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0% and all treatments incubated. Data showed that for moderately contaminated soils, ash rates of 0.5 – 1.0% were efficient from 40 to 70% for Zn and Cd, and raised markedly to between 70 and 93% for Cu and Pb. For extremely contaminated soils, the rates of ashes at 1.0, 1.5 and 2% were much more efficient (60 – 80%). The use of fly and bottom ashes for metal inactivation and soil remediation should give greater consideration to the effect of pH and the type of heavy metals than the content of SiO2 and Al2O3. Fly ash displayed superior inactivation and remediation effects to the bottom ash.

Opis:
This study focused on the reclamation of ash from incineration process and development of new artificial lightweight aggregate (LWA) that have comparable properties with existing natural coarse aggregate. The main objective of this study is to examine potential use of recycled municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) ash as raw material in LWA production with a method of cold-bonded pelletization. Two types of incineration ash which is bottom ash (BA) and fly ash (FA) were collected from Cameron Highland Incineration Plant, Malaysia. The properties of BA and FA are studied by means of X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and microstructure of these ashes were inspected using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The properties of BALA and FALA produced in this study is examined including loose bulk density, water absorption and aggregate impact value (AIV). From the results of both types of artificial LWA, the lowest loose bulk density of BALA is BALA50 with 564.14 kg/m3 and highest is at 831.19 kg/m3. For FALA50, lowest loose bulk density is 573.64 kg/m3 and highest is 703.35 kg/m3. Water absorption of BALA and FALA is quite similar with one another in with the value of 23.8% and 22.6%, respectively. Generally, FALA have better qualities of LWA comparing with BALA with lower bulk density and water absorption and can be categorized as strong aggregate. In summary, reclamation and reutilization of incinerator ash has generated acceptable qualities for artificial LWA. Both types of BA and FA shown a great potential to be recycled as additional materials in artificial aggregate production.

The influence of sewage sludge incineration temperature on the formed ash constitution was examined. The comparative extraction tests of two differently prepared ashes (laboratory and industrial) were carried out in order to verify if the parameters of sewage sludge incineration influence the extraction selectivity of phosphorus compounds. The laboratory ash (A(lab)) were prepared from sewage sludge incinerated at 950°C on a laboratory scale while the industrial ash (A(ind)) comes from thermal utilization system of the sewage sludge at the Gdynia Sewage Treatment Plant, which uses fluid-bed furnace incineration at 850 - 900°C. It was found that the temperature and the conditions of the sewage sludge incineration process have an effect on the usage properties of the formed ash. Despite the twofold lower Fe content in the industrial ash than that of the laboratory one, its content in extracts after phosphoric acid leaching is 4.7 times higher. The lower values of PO4^3- leaching degree from the industrial ash than the laboratory ash were observed, as well as a decrease of extraction productivity.

In order to realize the resource and harmless utilization of high-ash coal slime in coal preparation plants, porous ceramsites were prepared by the high-temperature sintering method with coal slime as raw material. The influences of sintering temperature, sintering time and ash content on the properties of porous ceramsites were studied by experiments, and the phase composition, micro-morphology and pore structure characteristics of ceramsites were analyzed by XRD, SEM and BET. The experimental results showed that with the increase of sintering temperature and sintering time, the amount of molten liquid in ceramsite green bodies increased, the densification degree of ceramsites increased gradually, the bulk density and the apparent density increased gradually, and the water absorption and the apparent porosity decreased gradually. However, with the increase of coal slime ash content, the quantity of pores within ceramsites increased first and then decreased. When the coal slime ash content was 55%, the bulk density of porous ceramsite sample was 0.549g/cm3, the water absorption rate was 64.63%, the specific surface area was 19.40m2/g, the crushing rate and wear rate were 0.14%, with rough surface, porous structure and excellent water absorption performance, which met the optimum performance requirements of porous ceramsites. At the same time, this research also provides a new idea and method for the reuse of high-ash coal slime resource, a by-product of coal washing and dressing.

Ash dumps occupy significant areas around the world and make a negative influence on the environment. This effect is decreased by their natural colonisation determined by the bioclimatic conditions of the area. The purpose of the current study was to identify the structure of the forest communities and the initial stages of soil formation on the ash dump in southern taiga. This study was carried out on three sites in the forest phytocoenosis formed in the process of revegetation of the Verkhniy Tagil Power Station ash dump over 50 years, as well as on two background forest sites in the Middle Urals. Complex geobotanical and soil studies were carried out. The results of the study show that forest phytocoenoses with a predominance of hardwood species (Betula pendula Roth and Populus tremula L.) and a small admixture of coniferous species can form on the non-recultivated ash dump within 50 years in a boreal zone. In total, the studied mixed forest phytocoenoses are similar in composition to zonal secondary forests, but differ by having lower height and diameter of the stand, as well as herb–shrub layer coverage. Their species density and floristic richness are also lesser. The study proved that the process of soil formation is also proceeding according to the zonal type in the ash substrate under forest communities. The results of the study can be applied to justifying the forecasts of ecosystem restoration on the technogenic substrate, as well as for the species selecting for their recultivation in the studied area and similar to it.

This paper presents the results of the preliminary experiments conducted on fly ash and bottom ash samples that were collected from a fluidised-bed boiler after biomass combustion. The purpose of the research was to determine potential possibilities of the introduction of such types of waste to soil, in accordance with the ecological engineering assumptions. The following physical and chemical properties of the analysed waste were determined: particle size distribution, pH, chemical composition, and leaching. The chemical properties of the tested power-generation waste were essentially different, depending on the time of waste sample collection from the installation, despite the fact that other identical sampling conditions were observed: the same installation, the same combustion process, and the same type of fuel. To determine the eco-toxicity of the tested waste samples, the vegetation experiments were conducted that allowed to evaluate the influence of the tested waste samples on selected test plant species. The tests concerned for example the influence of fly ash and bottom ash on such physiological processes as seed germination and plant growth (the growth of both roots and shoots). The experiments indicated certain options of the introduction of the tested waste into soil. However, due to a considerable changeability of the waste composition and structure that presented a risk of the introduction of undesired pollutants into soil, including heavy metals, such use would be possible upon previous regular evaluation of the waste’s physical, chemical, and eco-toxic properties.

Opis:
The supporting structure inside a coastal dike is often made of dredged non-uniform sand with good compaction properties. Due to the shortage of natural construction material for both coastal and river dikes and the surplus of different processed materials, new experiments were made with sand-ash mixtures and fine-grained dredged materials to replace both dike core and dike cover materials resulting in economical, environmentally friendly and sustainable dikes. Ash from EC Gdańsk and dredged sand from the Vistula river were mixed to form an engineering material used for dike construction. The optimum sand-ash composites were applied at a field test site to build a large-scale research dike. Fine-grained dredged materials from Germany were chosen to be applied in a second full-scale research dike in Rostock. All materials were investigated according to the standards for soil mechanical analysis. This includes basic soil properties, mechanical characteristics, such as grain-size distribution, compaction parameters, compressibility, shear strength, and water permeability. In the field, the infiltration of water into the dike body as well as the erosion resistance of the cover material against overflowing water was determined. Results of both laboratory and field testing are discussed in this paper. In conclusion, the mixing of bottom ash with mineral soil, such as relatively uniform dredged sand, fairly improves the geotechnical parameters of the composite, compared to the constituents. Depending on the composite, the materials may be suitable to build a dike core or an erosion-resistant dike cover.

The fusion behaviour of biomass ash-forming materials is an important factor in assessing the propensity to form undesirable slag and fouling deposits in the boiler. The characteristics of the fuel used affect the extent and severity of the problem, thus growing efforts are put on finding reliable methods for its characterization. Combustion and co-combustion of biomass have gained popularity in combating climate change and reducing carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. Nevertheless, biomass encompasses a wide range of different types and its use increases operational risks due to the diversity of the chemical composition. This study is based on characterising the mineral phase transformations of two kinds of biomass (wood pellets and cereal pellets) using various laboratory-based methods on fuel ashes. Measurements of changes in the electrical properties of the ash during the sintering process (dielectric loss factor) were performed using a QuadTech Plus 7600 bridge in the frequency range 500Hz - 1MHz. Thermodynamic analyses were performed by means of FactSage™ modelling. The results were compared with those of standard tests, AFT and oxide index calculations, which were employed to predict slagging and fouling propensities. The observed changes in dielectric loss depend on the frequency and temperature of sintering. FactSageTM thermodynamic equilibrium calculations proved very useful in predicting the ash melting behaviour and the chemical changes occurring in the ash. The existence of a melt phase, occurring at even lower temperatures of those given by the AFT, is in accordance with the high slagging and fouling hazards predicted by empirical indices.

Opis:
The residues from coal combustion are classified as a byproduct harmful to the environment, difficult for transportation and use. These are mainly fly and bottom ashes and slag. Although some of them find practical application, mainly in the construction industry, the majority is still stored. This is particularly true for ashes from power plants. Understandably, the disposal of ashes is of great ecological and economic importance. Recycling and recovery are the best available options here. Foreign experiences have shown that fly ashes can be a valuable resource for production of synthetic zeolites. Natural zeolites are used in numerous economic and industrial sectors. Their limited resources raise the need to look for and apply synthetic products. Since fly ashes obtained from coal are similar to natural zeolites in terms of structure and chemical composition, it is possible to use them as a raw material for the synthesis of zeolites. The aim of the research was to assess the possibility of zeolite synthesis from fly ash - obtained from the municipal power plant – by means of chemical conversion method. In the experiment, the coal ash collected from under electrostatic precipitators in Kielce Power Plant was used. The effect of chemical activation on the sorption properties of coal ash was examined. The chemical conversion consisted in fly ash – NaOH solution interaction under specified temperature and pressure. The influence of changes in the structure of individual grains of fly ash (SEM studies) on their sorption properties was estimated. The level of adsorption on the model stand was tested by means of spectrophotometric method using methylene blue. The modification results and sorption properties of ashes for the set parameters (NaOH concentration, temperature, reaction time) were assessed. The microscopic and X-ray observations as well as specific surface changes indicate that after modification new crystal structures improving sorption capacity were obtained. The aim of the paper is to assess the possibility of utilizing the furnace waste from Kielce Power Plant. A necessary condition for the recovery and utilization of the waste is to identify their characteristics and properties.
