Giorgio MarianiUniversity of Rome “La Sapienza” ItalyWalls that Bridge; or, What We Can Learn from the Roman Walls Abstract: When, during the latest US electoral campaign, Pope Francis criticized Trump’s idea of building a wall between Mexico and the US, reiterating his favorite  point that “we do not need to build walls, but bridges,” the Trump camp retorted that the Pope lives in a city state surrounded by walls, in a city itself surrounded by other walls dating back to ancient Roman times. Why wasn't he concerned with those walls? As one can see, even though Roman walls have completely lost their original function and survive mainly as tourist sites, they also remain powerful political and cultural symbols. The scope of this essay is to offer, from the perspective of an Americanist who was born and raised in Rome, some comparative reflections on  what we can learn today from the history of Roman walls, as well as from their symbolic afterlives. Keywords: Roman walls, walls as rhetoric, US literature, walls as bridges, walls as dividers

Opis:
The article is the effect of reflection upon the Church. Assuming ecclesial character of catechesis it shows the need for reflection and search of the right model of the Church. There are two models presented: institutional and communitarian. The Vatican Council II was the place and time when these two models came together. At that time institutional model based on a pyramidal hierarchy, emphasizing the legal force, closed to any kind of dialogue with the world changes into communi-tarian one. The Church is to become a real community of the people of faith yearning to get united around Jesus Christ. It is a community which is open to the dialogue with the world and culture. It is an ability to share the essence of the community: what it is, what it does and what it possesses. In the times when the majority of people are tired of the institutionalization of life, according to the recommendations of the documents of the Vatican Council II one should go towards the community where a personal encounter between God and human takes place.

Opis:
As a general rule, a joint stock company is based on a contract, therefore at least two shareholders are necessary to establish such a business entity. A sole shareholder joint stock company has an exceptional character, because it can be founded only by the state or by the local government. In the Romanian jurisprudence recently several important problems were raised regarding the operation of sole shareholder joint stock companies, therefore a detailed analysis of the court cases dealing with the representation of the interests of the sole shareholder and with judiciary control over the activity of such companies seems pertinent.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the first three volumes of Michael Meinert’s Hochwald-Saga (The High Forest Saga) series, whose action takes place in Silesia in the 19th century; these are are: Gescheiterte Flucht (Failed Escape), Der zerrissene Graf (Lost count) and Ehrlicher Schwindler (Honest swindler). In these works, the author breaks away from the stereotypical perception of Silesia as a space of memory, the critical turning point of which was the end of World War II. He does not create images of a “lost homeland” – Silesia becomes an attractive historical space for him precisely because of its past character, and is a fascinating setting for novels with historical plots. At the same time, he revives the history of Silesia as a province of the Kingdom of Prussia and later of the German Empire. He also creates images of space, assigning them additional meanings, which is in line with the idea of space semantisation promoted by Yuri Lotman. An extremely important element in the composition of Meinert’s works is the creation of Silesia as a sacred space in which existential, axiological and theological questions are asked. In his understanding, places become a humanised space which has its own characteristic identity and often depicts the emotional states or character traits of the novel’s figures; moreover, it plays an important role in shaping their attitudes and values. The purpose of this text is to analyse the poetics of Meinert’s above-mentioned novels with particular emphasis on the topos of Silesia, its characteristics, and the role and functions it plays in them. As it is closely related to the poetics of place, attention is also paid to selected aspects of geopoetics in the sense proposed by Elżbieta Rybicka.

Opis:
The very text is directly related to the text entitled “On the Process of Translation of a Literary Text. A Case Study of “Edzio” by Bruno Schulz (an overview of an exercise)” published a year ago (see Chruszczewski 2019). “The vast majority of texts regarding a number of issues connected with the notion of translation describe the translated text as a product – that is another text rendered into another culture, not even mentioning another language. The idea of this exercise was based upon an attempt of having a look at how exactly the process of translation of a literary text would proceed. This short presentation is just a small fragment of a much larger work devoted to the process of translation” (Chruszczewski 2019: 57–58). It is a presentation of a translation exercise undertaken by ten students coming from two different seminar groups. Each of the students have translated from Polish into English a text of a comparable length. All the students are bilingual, and fluent in English. None of them is a native speaker of English. After the translation exercise was completed the texts were assembled and integrated into a coherent literary narration in the target language. All students were asked to try to write down their impressions while they were translating the text, including what was the rationale behind their decisions. As one can notice, it was relatively easy for the students to provide interesting translations, but the majority of them found it exceptionally difficult to describe their choices as translators. The above can be a hint for future theorists of translation studies to start large scale interdisciplinary projects based on the interesting fact that translation processes (in plural!) can work differently within the minds of translators even if they are almost at the same age and they come from quite similar cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Opis:
The basis of Aristotle’s arguments about truth and falsity is formulated syntactically according to the distinctions of ‘to be’ as the predicative affirmation - composition and, correspondingly, ‘not to be’ as negation – separation. As the nominal defining characteristic of falsity is contradiction, so of truth is non-contradiction. The expression of truth or falsity in the declarative sentence of affirmation or negation is a function of thinking as a human cognitive disposition under the semantic figures of categorical predication. In addition, we cite Aristotle’s more important texts on the true intellection of non-composites (indivisibles), the investigation of truth and probability, the diagnosis of falsehood, the truthfulness and lying. Finally, a mention of modern adaptations of Aristotle’s concept of truth.

Opis:
Aim. The aim of the article is to define the concept of aesthetic competence of the nomad teacher of postmodern era based on a comparative analysis of two aesthetic models (metis paraesthetics and soteriological aesthetics). Methods. The subject of study is anthropotemporal methodology of acquiring aesthetic competence as an act of spiritual transformation (approaches, paradigm, priorities, criteria of effectiveness). The analysis of the stages of nomad’s dianoic choice in the process of understanding beauty as a boon was carried out using the method of epistemological design, according to which emotions function cognitively in aesthetic experience. The technology of spiritual self-coaching was chosen to activate all the structural components of aesthetic competence – the intention to correct aesthetic apperception and the competencies of emotional-reflective, value-semantic, aesthetic and worldview revaluation. Results. The implementation of the chosen technology opened up the possibility of reorientation for the nomad teacher: from the drive of the performer-trickster to a humble and grateful anticipation of the beauty as transcendent – to overcoming the power of inertia of previous dependence, responses to the calls of a pure (still “adventurous”) mind. A cluster analysis of the results of the completed tasks was carried out for the regression description of the efficiency of the technology. Conclusion. The soteriological concept of the aesthetic competence of the nomad teacher focuses attention on the essential coexistence of the teacher with students throughout the entire process of his self-determination. The practical experience of its implementation can make a positive contribution to reforming postmodern aesthetic education.
