Opis:
The water conductivity of arctic zone soils derived in different micro-relief forms was determined. The greatest water conductivity at the 0-5 cm depth for the higher values of water potentials (> -7 kJ m-3) was shown by tundra polygons (Brunic-Turbic Cryosol, Arenic) – 904-0.09 cm day-1, whereas the lowest were exhibited by Turbic Cryosols – 95-0.05 cm day-1. Between -16 and -100 kJ m-3, the water conductivity for tundra polygons rapidly decreased to 0.0001 cm day-1, whereas their decrease for the other forms was much lower and in consequence the values were 0.007, 0.04, and 0.01 cm day-1 for the mud boils (Turbic Cryosol (Siltic, Skeletic)), cell forms (Turbic Cryosol (Siltic, Skeletic)), and sorted circles (Turbic Cryosol (Skeletic)), respectively. In the 10-15 cm layer, the shape of water conducti-vity curves for the higher values of water potentials is nearly the same as for the upper layer. Similarly, the water conductivity is the highest – 0.2 cm day-1 for tundra polygons. For the lower water potentials, the differences in water conductivity increase to the decrease of soil water potential. At the lowest potential the water conductivity is the highest for sorted circles – 0.02 cm day-1 and the lowest in tundra polygons – 0.00002 cm day-1.

Opis:
Understanding the spatial distribution of soil protozoa under the snow cover is important for estimation of ecosystem responses to climate change and interpretation of results of field experiments. This work explores spatial patterns of soil testate amoebae under the snow cover at the plot scale (the range of metres) in arctic tundra (Qeqertarsuaq/Disko Island, West Greenland). To explain spatial patterns in abundance, species diversity and assemblage composition of testate amoebae, we measured microtopography, snow depth and substrate density. The results indicate that the abundance of active testate amoebae under the snow cover was quite low. The empty shell assemblage was characterised by the presence of linear spatial trends in the species composition across the site, whereas no patterns were detected within the plot. The distribution of the abundance and the species diversity were unstructured. The linear trends in the species composition corresponded to the site microtopography and were controlled by the topography-related soil moisture. Snow depth also affected the linear trends presumably by controlling soil temperatures. Overall, the results suggest that population processes do not generate spatial patterns in protozoan assemblages at the plot scale so that protozoan distribution can be considered random at macroscopically homogeneous plots.

Opis:
Climate changes may influence the frequency, intensity and geographical distribution of parasites, directly affecting their dispersive stages in the environment (eggs, larvae) and, indirectly, the larvae living mainly in invertebrate intermediate hosts. In biologically diverse nematodes climate warming contributes to the increase in the range of distribution, colonization of new hosts and modification of their development cycles. This is particularly acute in the Arctic and pertains, for instance, to nematodes Ostertagia gruehneri and Setaria tundra parasitizing reindeer Rangifer tarandus and Umingmakstrongylus pallikuukensis in musk oxen (Ovibos moschatus). Increase in range expansion of mosquitoes Culicidae caused that nematodes of the genus Dirofilaria, especially D. repens, have been listed in autochthonous invasions even in the northern and eastern European countries. In addition, extended range of occurrence is also shown by Ancylostoma braziliense – a parasite of carnivores in the tropical and subtropical countries. In recent years over 20 cases of autochthonous creeping eruption (CE) caused by cutanea larva migrans (CLM) A. braziliense were detected in people in southern Europe (Italy, Spain, France, Germany).

Opis:
The Arctic region is under an ever-increasing anthropogenic influence. The nature in the Arctic is extremely vulnerable to the effects of pollutants, which may eventually lead to certain irreversible ecological processes. Heavy metals occupy a special place among priority pollutants. Therefore, the aim of this study has been to assess the ecological status and the degree of contamination with heavy metals of the soils of Arctic and sub-Arctic areas. Arctic soils were studied in the region of the White Sea and the Barents Sea during the Arctic Floating University, a research expedition held in July 2012 by M. Lomonosov Northern (Arctic) Federal University. During the expedition, samples were collected and the landscapes (topography, vegetation) were described. In order to assess the impact of environmental contamination, the total content of heavy metals in soils was evaluated by X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF). The level of soil contamination was assessed according to the maximum permissible concentrations ( MPC), temporary permissible concentrations (TPC), chemical substance factor (Kc) and the total pollution index (Zc). Our analysis of the experimental data showed a wide-range change in the soil agrochemical parameters. It has been demonstrated that the investigated soils of the Arctic and sub-Arctic areas represent different soil properties, are affected by different climatic conditions and belong to different texture taxonomic classes, e.g. the grain-size distribution varies from sand to clay loam; the pH ranges from strongly acid to neutral and the content of organic substances can be very low to high. According to the total pollution index, almost all the soils present an acceptable heavy metal contamination level. In most of the studied soils, the heavy metals in terms of amounts accumulated can be ordered as follows: Co > Pb > Cu > Zn > As > Ni > V > Mn.
