Opis:
Breastfeeding is an important source of nutrition and sustenance for infants and toddlers, and has also been linked to several aspects of emotional, physiological, and psychological developments. Benefits of breastfeeding include lower morbidity and mortality rates in infants, appropriate nutrition for early physiological development, and improved immune system development. Some studies also suggest it may enhance cognitive development and reduce the risk of diabetes. These health benefits positively influence the physiological status of the infant throughout his or her early childhood and adolescence. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that breastfeeding be initiated immediately following birth and continued until the infant is at least 6 months of age. However, according to the UNICEF report, between 2000-2007 in Qatar, only 12% of babies under 6 months were exclusively breastfed. Funded by the QNRP (Qatar Undergraduate Research Experience Program), the goal of this exploratory qualitative study was to find ways to effectively promote breastfeeding practices among Qatari women by investigating factors affecting the ways in which Qatari women (national and nonnational Arab women) make decisions to engage in breastfeeding practices and their overall knowledge of breastfeeding. Purposive sampling was used to recruit 32 Arab mothers as research participants and individual in-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with each participant. Results showed that professional support from doctors and nurses, social support from parents and spouse, cultural and religious values, economic ability work restrictions, time, as well as availability of help and care at home, personal challenges, such as perceptions of pain, body image, and body changes, were some of the major factors in making decisions to breastfeed or not.

Opis:
The dramatic transformation of the Arabian Gulf since the discovery of petroleum resources has called for a new perspective on the situation of women in the region. Qatar is an example of fast-paced industrialization, modernization and profound socio-cultural changes. As the environment transforms literally from day to day, new identities are being forged and social roles renegotiated. The leadership’s vision for the country speaks of gender equality and opportunity for all. This article asks how young Qatari women’s personal stories fit into the national narrative of change and what they see as the best path to agency and empowerment.

Opis:
The paper presents two novels by an Iraqi writer Inaam Kachachi (born in 1952) – Sawaqi al-quloob (Streams of hearts, 2005) and Tashari (2013). Both works deal with one of the most important topics in contemporary Iraqi literature, i.e. exile. The first part of the paper describes the lives of the main characters in these novels, who mainly reside in Paris, while its second part concentrates on their reflections on exile. Particular attention was paid to spatial and temporal metaphors which were employed by the author to express the protagonists’ thoughts and feelings. Their reflections were set in the context of theoretical considerations about exile by prominent intellectuals, such as Edward Said, as well as those about experiencing space, which were the focus of Yi-Fu Tuan’s attention and of other researchers.

Opis:
The contemporary situation of Muslim women is different in different parts of the Islamic world – it cannot be clearly defined as good or bad. It is not only the result of the division of societies into rich and poor, because in the rich countries of the Gulf, women enjoy less freedom than in many poor villages in Syria. The position of Muslim women in the world raises a lot of controversy as a result of cultural prejudices or ignorance. General trends in the fashion world do not omit men and women in Muslim countries. Like other young people all over the world they are directly exposed to changing trends, including those known as "Western wear". It can be said that the modern activities of Muslim women that fit their – interests give them a new type of professional experience and consequently lead to their economic independence. These activities and interests don’t conflict with traditional roles a Muslim woman plays in the family. Online shopping, for example, can be done without leaving the office or while keeping an eye on the house and children.

“It is important to stress that a variety of positions with respect to feminism, nation, religion and identity are to be found in Anglophone Arab women’s writings. This being the case, it is doubtful whether, in discussing this literary production, much mileage is to be extracted from over emphasis of the notion of its being a conduit of ‘Third World subaltern women.’” (Nash 35) Building on Geoffrey Nash’s statement and reflecting on Deleuze and Guattari’s conceptualization of minor literature and Gloria Anzaldua’s Borderland(s), we will discuss in this paper how the writings of Arab Anglophone women are specific minor and borderland narratives within minor literature(s) through a tentative (re)localization of Arab women’s English literature into distinct and various categories. By referring to various bestselling English works produced by Arab British and Arab American women authors, our aim is to establish a new taxonomy that may fit the specificity of these works

Opis:
Egypt is a place with a long tradition of female participation in revolutions. After years of Mubarak’s despotism, women joined the revolution once again. As a result, they had to deal with the violation of women’s rights. When Morsi was removed, women were again at the top of political topics. The new constitution was described as the most progressive for women. Sisi has been a president for short time but he is already called the president of women. However women still face problems. They defended themselves from the Muslim Brotherhood’s rules by supporting Sisi, but did they really win by overthrowing the regime of Mubarak?
