This paper presents two rare 16th-century panel-stamped bindings from the collections of the Kórnik Library. The first one, decorated with an impression of a panel depicting the personification of the Christian virtue of Hope (Spes), protects the printed book published in 1545. The binding was made by a Netherlandish bookbinder working in Leuven, called Master IP, identified with Jacob Pandelaert (d. ab. 1563). The second binding presents a Gothic motif of animals-in-foliage and protects a printed book published in 1550. The authorship of the panel (the so-called de profundis) is attributed to a bookbinder working in the town of ’s-Hertogenbosch (fr. Bois-le-Duc), Geraert van der Hatart (d. ab. 1540/1541). Both these bindings testify to the fact that the holdings of the Kórnik Library include gems of the West-European bookbinding craft.

The point of departure for this article is the memory of moving fragments of Janusz Korczak’s journal from Warsaw ghetto. The author confronts the fragments with Korczak’s earlier texts, such as the short storied about holiday camps for Polish and Jewish children, and the novel Król Maciuś na bezludnej wyspie [King Maciuś on a Desert Island]. The image of a canary bird, used in the novel, is confronted with other symbolic stories about this bird, such as the story in Wiesław Myśliwski’s Pałac [Palace]. With reference to the image, the article invokes Korczak’s meditations on identity and tolerance, and human ethical and aesthetic choices. The audacity of Korczak’s thoughts and conclusions goes far beyond his time, and seems perfectly fit for ours.

Opis:
Animal rights at the international level have been defined in the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare, which has become a guiding principle for many EU countries in shaping animal protection legislation. The subject of this article is the humane protection of homeless animals, which is the responsibility of the municipality in terms of maintaining cleanliness and order. The study assumes that by carrying out tasks regarding the protection of animals from homelessness, municipalities contribute to the effective protection of animals by providing them with appropriate care. The analysis found that the provisions of the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare have been fully incorporated into Polish legislation. However, the effectiveness of the provisions on the protection of homeless animals executed by municipalities is not entirely satisfactory as evidenced by the post-inspection data and selected jurisprudence. In order to improve this state of affairs, the following de lege ferenda postulates were formulated, which in part are also guidelines of the Supreme Audit Office extending the catalog of activities in municipal homeless animal protection programs, introducing the requirement to inspect animal shelters by municipalities, changing the location requirements of animal shelters and also clarifying sanitary requirements concerning the conditions in which animals live in to improve their welfare. The above changes in legislation may contribute to more efficient humane protection of homeless animals in Poland and may serve as an example for other EU countries.
Prawa zwierząt na forum międzynarodowym zostały określone w Światowej Deklaracji Praw Zwierząt, która stała się wytyczną dla wielu państw Unii Europejskiej (UE) w kształtowaniu przepisów w zakresie ochrony zwierząt. Przedmiotem analizy niniejszego artykułu jest humanitarna ochrona zwierząt bezdomnych, która jest obowiązkiem gminy w ramach utrzymania czystości i porządku. W pracy założono, że realizując zadania w zakresie ochrony zwierząt przed bezdomnością, gminy przyczyniają się do ich efektywnej ochrony poprzez zapewnienie im odpowiedniej opieki. W wyniku przeprowadzonej analizy stwierdzono, że w pełni wprowadzono postanowienia Światowej Deklaracji Praw Zwierząt do prawodawstwa polskiego, jednakże skuteczność przepisów w zakresie ochrony zwierząt bezdomnych przez gminy nie jest do końca skuteczna, czego potwierdzeniem są dane pokontrolne i wybrane orzecznictwo. W celu poprawy tego stanu sformułowano postulaty de lege ferenda, będące częściowo również wytycznymi Najwyższej Izby Kontroli, a mianowicie rozszerzenie katalogu działań w gminnych programach ochrony zwierząt bezdomnych, wprowadzenie wymogu kontroli schronisk dla zwierząt przez gminy, zmianę wymogów lokalizacyjnych schronisk dla zwierząt, a także doprecyzowanie wymogów sanitarnych dotyczących warunków bytowania zwierząt w schroniskach dla poprawy ich dobrostanu. Powyższe zmiany w prawodawstwie mogą przyczynić się do bardziej efektywnej humanitarnej ochrony zwierząt bezdomnych w Polsce oraz mogą być wskazówką dla innych państw UE.

The article is of a research nature and has been prepared using methods appropriate for this type of publication. Obviously, the formal-dogmatic or legal-comparative method is important in this respect. However, the observation of the actual state related to the implementation of the protection in question is also not without significance. Such an approach is reflected in the adopted aim and formulated research theses. The subject matter of the article is very important from the point of view of the protection of the environment and natural resources, of which the animal world is an important element. The publication concerns issues of international importance and is undoubtedly original in character, which makes it valuable not only for scholarship but also for practice. The protection of animals is connected with saving the environment and the order in which humans live. Therefore, humanitarian and ethical considerations – reflected in legal scholarship and in normative acts – should also be taken into account. This is expressed in Article 1 (1) of the Polish Act of 21 August 1997 on the protection of animals (consolidated text, Journal of Laws 2020, item 638), which states that: “An animal as a living being capable of suffering, is not a thing. Humans owe him respect, protection and care”. Such an obligation in Poland also results from the Constitution of the Republic of Poland. Undoubtedly, a very important element in the protection of animals is the development of an appropriate system of national law and international law. Their coexistence is a guarantee of effective legal protection of animals, especially those threatened with extinction. For an optimal model of law in the field of animal protection to be formed, it is important to shape an effective system of authorities, services and institutions equipped with rational instruments for action. Effective supranational cooperation seems essential to optimise activities to save animals threatened with extinction.
Artykuł ma charakter naukowo-badawczy i został przygotowany z wykorzystaniem metod właściwych dla tego rodzaju publikacji. Oczywiście ważna w tym zakresie jest metoda formalno-dogmatyczna czy prawno-porównawcza, jednakże nie bez znaczenia jest też obserwacja stanu faktycznego związanego z realizacją przedmiotowej ochrony. Takie podejście znajduje odzwierciedlenie w przyjętym celu i sformułowanych tezach badawczych. Tematyka podjęta w artykule ma doniosłe znaczenie z punktu widzenia ochrony środowiska i zasobów naturalnych, których istotnym elementem jest świat zwierząt. Publikacja dotyczy problematyki o znaczeniu międzynarodowym i ma niewątpliwie charakter oryginalny, dzięki czemu może mieć wartość poznawczą nie tylko dla nauki, ale i praktyki. Ochrona zwierząt jest związana z ratowaniem środowiska i ładu, w którym żyje człowiek. Należy w związku z tym mieć na uwadze także względy humanitarne i etyczne, które znajdują swoje odzwierciedlenie w doktrynie oraz w aktach normatywnych, czego wyrazem jest art. 1 ust. 1 ustawy z dnia 21 sierpnia 1997 r. o ochronie zwierząt (t.j. Dz.U. 2020, poz. 638), gdzie stwierdza się, że „zwierzę jako istota żyjąca, zdolna do odczuwania cierpienia, nie jest rzeczą. Człowiek jest mu winien poszanowanie, ochronę i opiekę”. Obowiązek taki, np. w Polsce, wynika także z Konstytucji RP. Niewątpliwie bardzo istotnym elementem w zakresie ochrony zwierząt jest kształtowanie odpowiedniego systemu prawa krajowego i prawa międzynarodowego. Ich współistnienie jest gwarantem skutecznej ochrony prawnej zwierząt, zwłaszcza zagrożonych wyginięciem. Dla ukształtowania się optymalnego modelu prawa w zakresie ochrony zwierząt duże znaczenie ma ukształtowanie skutecznie działającego systemu organów, służb i instytucji wyposażonych w racjonalne instrumenty działania. Dla optymalizacji działań w zakresie dotyczącym ratowania zwierząt zagrożonych wyginięciem konieczna wydaje się efektywna współpraca ponadnarodowa.

Artykuł przedstawia nazwy zwierząt obecne w słownictwie dziecięcym. Autorka charakteryzuje wskazane zagadnienia na podstawie badań z zakresu statystyki językowej (H. Zgółkowa, K. Bułczyńska, Słownictwo dzieci w wieku przedszkolnym, Poznań 1987; H. Zgółkowa Słownictwo dzieci w wieku przedszkolnym w latach 2010-2015, Poznań 2016). Materiał zawarty w słownikach gromadzono w latach 1980-1983 oraz 2010-2015. Analizie poddano listy frekwencyjne i rangowe. Opisane zostały nazwy zwierząt pojawiające się w języku najmłodszych użytkowników polszczyzny (2-7 lat). Tematyka animalna może wspierać kształcenie językowe oraz inne formy edukacji, glottodydaktycznej i przyrodniczej.
The article aims to present the children’s vocabulary in terms of the presence of animal topics. The author characterizes given issues on the basis of linguistic statistics research (volumes: H. Zgółkowa, K. Bułczyńska, Vocabulary of kindergarten children, Poznań 1987; H. Zgółkowa, Vocabulary of kindergarten children 2010–2015, Poznań 2016).The material used in two dictionaries was collected in the years1980–1983 and 2010–2015. The frequency and range lists were analysed. In the examples described, animal names appear in language of the youngest speakers of Polish (2–7 years old). Animal topics may play a supportive role in linguistic, glottodidactic and natural education.

Until the beginning of the 20th century, animal husbandry in the pastoral community in the vicinity of Werchowyna was one of the main axes of the organization of the year of farm work. Nowadays, the role of animals in this region is still important, and animal farming is one of the main factors of the local economy. Basing on the source materials collected by Polish and Ukrainian researchers, the article presents the most important practices for the old Hutsul community, which were often of magical character and aimed at protecting animals, and socio-economicmotives that were the inspiration in the old sheep farming during summer grazing. All these have constituted the historical background for compiling information that enable determining the contemporary image of sheep in the community of Hutsulshepherds

This text focuses on comparing two images of the rite of the blessing of animals in Mikstat, based on 19th and 20th century literature, as well as on research from August 16, 2018. The analysis of old symbols, magical activities, and longforgotten celebrations is juxtaposed with contemporary changes in tradition which have created new symbolism for, and interest in, the older elements that comprise the cultural heritage of Mikstat. For at least 300 years, the purpose of the traditional rite of the blessing of animals on the Day of St. Roch (August 16) has been to preserve the health, happiness, and fertility of farm and livestock.

The article is a presentation of spring rituals associated with animals in the Polish countryside, recorded by ethnographers up to the beginning of the twentieth century. In traditional Polish rural society, rituals associated with the Slavs beliefs and symbolism, which were to symbolically start the new vegetative year, were among the most important activities of worship ‑ the choice of animals for the ritual. These beliefs were so firmly embedded in the consciousness of the traditional communities that survived until the early twentieth century in the form of customs and the way of how animals were treated by the hosts. The relationship of man with the animal was very characteristic of the rural community, as it was associated with the supplementation of the basic needs of the host, which translated into a concern for the animals’ health and their lives. In the opinion of the former inhabitants of the village, caring for the animals apparently manifested in the practice of magic that was to prevent and ward off spells and diseases.

In this article, Krystyna Zabawa analyses Barbara Gawryluk’s novel for older children Czarna, Klifka i tajemnice z dna morza [Czarna, Klifka and the secrets from the seabed] from the perspective of the commentaries this novel makes on language issues and on aspects of interpersonal as well as interspecies communication. Zabawa identifies the ways in which the novel presents foreign languages (Swedish and English) and how it encourages young readers to learn them. Zabawa interprets Gawryluk’s novel a text about communication problems and about the conditions necessary for mutual understanding among people. She also analyses passages in the novel that address human-animal and animal-animal communication.

Therefore, this part of the series will discuss further important information on designing culverts under new standards. The article presents in detail the problems related to foundations and backfilling of facilities in question.

Opis:
Zrównoważony rozwój infrastruktury komunikacyjnej uwzględnia zagadnienia związane z ekologią. Z tego powodu nieodzowna staje się realizacja wielu przejść dla zwierząt pod lub nad budowanymi drogami kołowymi i liniami kolejowymi. Dotyczy to również prac przy modernizacji dróg komunikacyjnych. Z uwagi na złożoność tych obiektów pod względem technicznych rozwiązań funkcjonalnych, jak też interdyscyplinarność tego zagadnienia konieczne jest, zdaniem autorów, wydanie odpowiednich Zaleceń do projektowania, budowy i utrzymania przejść dla zwierząt, które w sposób jednoznaczny uporządkowałyby wszystkie kwestie związane z tymi obiektami.
Natural aggregates are widely used both in ribbon and volumetric construction. In respect of quantitative demand, ribbon construction is definitely much more receptive. After completion of implementation of large infrastructural investments, co-financed by EU funds, volumetric construction will become one of major directions of sale of aggregates.

Dotyczy to zarówno budowy nowych, jak też modernizacji istniejących dróg kołowych i kolejowych. W tym celu nieodzowna staje się budowa przejść dla zwierząt i przepustów o funkcji zespolonej.
In relation to the previous article from this series, it should be recalled that the development of transport infrastructure is closely related to sustainable development, taking into account many environmental aspects. This applies both new construction as well as modernization of the existing roads and railways. For this purpose, it becomes indispensable to the construction of passages for animals and culverts of complex function.

Przy zrównoważonym rozwoju infrastruktury komunikacyjnej, jak ogólnie wiadomo, nie da się pominąć zagadnień ekologicznych. Dotyczy to zarówno budowy nowych tak potrzebnych dróg kołowych i linii kolejowych, jak też i ich modernizacji. W tym celu nieodzowna staje się budowa przejść dla zwierząt i przepustów o funkcji zespolonej. Autor referatu porusza konieczność opracowania ujednoliconych Zaleceń Projektowania, Budowy i Utrzymania Przejść dla Zwierząt, które w sposób jednoznaczny uporządkowałyby wszystkie kwestie związane z tymi obiektami. Obecnie zalecenia takie są w fazie opracowywania.
With the sustainable development of transport infrastructure can not ignore the environmental problems. This applies both to build much-needed new roads and railways, as well, as their modernization. For this purpose, it becomes essential to build passages for animals and culverts of complex function. The author of the paper moves the need for a unified Recommendations of Design, Construction and Maintenance of Animal Passages, which clearly organize all the issues associated with these objects. Currently such recommendations are being developed under the leadership of the author.
