The aim of the article is to present the dilemmas that researchers may face, combining more than one research perspective. We are starting from sociological or ethnological research that focus on the stories of animals’ caregivers after the animal experiencing death of a companion. They are anthropomorphic and close to the urban legends. Although correct from the point of view of social research, they do not take into account the biological and psychological context. Examining the experience of mourning animals other than human requires giving a voice to those who will not answer researchers’ questions. However, having a wider perspective and trying to do transdisciplinary science, it becomes a duty to take into account even such knowledge, which will be inconsistent with the current research results. Another problem arises when trying to combine these points of view in such a way as not to alienate the respondents or researchers and at the same time get the most probable version of reality.

Municipalities, with a view to meeting their obligation to ensure care for stray animals, mainly limited themselves to catching them and placing in shelters (or, in cases where it was not possible to ensure shelters, in other places destined for keeping animals with no veterinary supervision, though), where new owners were searched for those animals. However, as it was diagnosed in the findings of the audit conducted by NIK in 2016 on prevention of stray animals, those measures resulted in an increased number of stray animals in shelters and other places, and in growing expenditures on providing care for them.

The Dutch Partij voor de Dieren (Party for the Animals), the only political party devoted to animals in the world, wants to take wild as well as domestic animals under its wing and, hence, to remove the traditional dividing line between both domains. How can the Animal Party at the same time claim to stand up for the interests of animals as individuals as well as for the particular interests of wild animals? Rather than perceiving wild animals as mere components of wider entities, the Animal Party starts to personalize wild animals at the moment that their wellbeing can be detected and actively improved.

Charakteryzuje się niniejszym zużyciem energii niż ruch lotniczy, nie powoduje emisji zanieczyszczeń do środowiska, natężenie ruchu jest nieporównywalnie mniejsze niż w przypadku ruchu samochodowego. W porównaniu z ruchem drogowym kolej mniej ingeruje w środowisko, stanowi także mniejsze zagrożenie dla dzikich zwierząt.

The purpose of this article is to present the activities of an association Catholic Concern for Animals founded in 1929. It is one of the few organizations working for the protection of animals inspired by the teachings of the Catholic Church. Its members engage in various activities on a variety of platforms, including educational campaigns and protests. Publishing work is also important. The association has been publishing a quarterly “The Ark” since 1937, in which it informs readers about its current operations and publishes articles on animals and their welfare. In 2015 the leaders of the organization addressed an appeal to the Pope Francis, appealing for a change in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, highlighting the role of a man in service of the natural world and postulating a significant reduction of experimentation on animals. It seems that some of these postulates go too far and are not compatible with an integral vision of man and of the world proclaimed by the Church.
Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie działalności stowarzyszenia Catholic Concern for Animals założonej w 1929 r. Jest ono jedną z nielicznych organizacji działających na rzecz ochrony zwierząt, które inspirują się nauczaniem Kościoła katolickiego. Jej członkowie podejmują wielopłaszczyznową działalność, która obejmuje akcje edukacyjne i protestacyjne. Istotna jest także praca wydawnicza. Stowarzyszenie od 1937 r. wydaje kwartalnik „The Ark”, w którym informuje czytelników o swoim bieżącym funkcjonowaniu oraz publikuje artykuły na temat zwierząt i ich dobrostanu. W 2015 r. liderzy organizacji skierowali do papieża Franciszka apel o dokonanie zmian w Katechizmie Kościoła Katolickiego, podkreślając służebną rolę człowieka wobec świata przyrody i postulując znaczne ograniczenie prowadzenia doświadczeń na zwierzętach. Wydaje się, że część z tych żądań idzie zdecydowanie za daleko i jest nie do pogodzenia z integralną wizją człowieka i świata głoszoną przez Kościół.

We meet a lot of wild animals, reptiles and insects on Polish territory, which pose a threat to people and livestock. The attacks of wild animals directly to humans are becoming more common. By this reason, we are exposed to different type of bites, which entails the cost of treatment. In this article we present the scale of threats by such animals as wolves, beavers, otters, snakes, bears. Also it is discussed the diseases: rabies, bird flu and other spread by ticks, wasps, bees, mosquitoes, etc. In this article we indicate that the damage caused by wild animals, reptiles and insects can be covered by personal accident insurance.

The Act on Animal Protection provides for a general ban on commercial breeding of dogs and cats, with an exclusion of animal husbandries registered in national organisations whose statutory purpose is to breed pedigree dogs and cats. There are no provisions in the Act specifying ’animal welfare standards in husbandries’, but nevertheless it imposes a number of obligations on animal owners as such, e.g. the obligation to provide appropriate living conditions and the obligation to meet the basic needs of animals. The statute defines what is meant by animal abuse and indicates the sanctions for such an offence.

The current legal categorisation of animals as property has its historical roots in Roman Law. The long history of this status prompts one to wonder whether it reflects modern community attitudes. It is, however, difficult to answer this question, as there is a dearth of empirical data on attitudes towards the legal status of animals. In light of the widely-accepted relationship between law and community attitudes, particularly in democratic societies, this paper highlights the need for empirical examinations of social attitudes towards the legal status of animals. It is suggested that such empirical exercises can help scholars and lawmakers more accurately understand whether a change in the legal status of some or all animals is politically achievable. Empirical studies of community attitudes can also provide direction to scholars, who theorise legal frameworks to define the legal status of animals, and animal advocacy groups, which seek to educate the community about the legal status of animals.

Artykuł dotyczy najważniejszych aspektów lotniczego transportu zwierząt. Zagadnienie transportu zwierząt jest niezwykle istotne, gdyż z jednej strony należy zorganizować transport w taki sposób, by zmęczenie organizmu zwierzęcia było jak najmniejsze, z drugiej zaś należy zabezpieczyć zwierzę oraz w sposób odpowiedni odseparować je od otoczenia. Pierwsze przepisy dotyczące przewozów zwierząt drogą lotniczą zostały wprowadzone w 1973 roku. W początkowej fazie regulacje były bardzo ubogie, wiedza dotycząca transportu zwierząt była zaś znikoma. Wraz z rozwojem lotniczego transportu zwierząt zmianie ulegały uregulowania prawne w tym zakresie. Dopiero w 1994 roku Przepisy IATA w postaci instrukcji Live Animals Regulation (LAR) w sposób jednoznaczny wprowadziły procedurę rezerwacji i obsługi przesyłek z żywymi zwierzętami. W artykule zostały opisane zarówno najważniejsze przepisy regulujące lotniczy transport żywych zwierząt, jak również procedury rezerwacji przesyłki, obsługi, dokumentacji i za-ładunku. Omówiono wytyczne dotyczące pojemników do przewozu zwierząt. Przedstawione zostały również przykłady regulacji państw oraz samych linii lotniczych w zakresie przewozu żywych zwierząt.
The article presents important aspects of the air animal shipments. Carriage of live animals by air is the one of most important issue. From one side, the transport should be organized in the way ensuring possible, the least tiring the organism of the animal. On the other side, it should protect the animal by adequately separation from the external environment. The first recipes concerning carriages of animals were entered in 1973. In the initial phase regulations were very limited. The knowledge concerning the animal transport was scarce. Along with an increasing number of transported animals the importance of the problem was noticed. Therefore appropriate regulations were started to develop. Only in 1994, IATA regulations in the form of instructions Live Animals Regulation (LAR) have clearly put in place a procedure for booking and handling consignments of living animals. The article presents key rules concerning the air transport of live animals, as well as the booking of the consignment procedure, service procedure, documentation, and loading procedure. Also discuss the guidelines for animal transport containers. It includes examples of restrictions specific for the particular countries and also for different airlines.

The article is of a scientific research nature and its main aim is to compare Polish and Estonian legal regulations on homeless (stray) animals and to evaluate them and formulate optimisation proposals. The analysis of national regulations was preceded by findings on how the issue in question is regulated in international law and EU law. The issue needs to be addressed due to the fact that the problem of the protection of homeless animals, despite the ever-increasing number of such animals, has been marginalised in all the legal orders discussed in this text. In any case, both in Poland and Estonia, their normative solutions are focused more on remedying the effects than on preventing the causes of the problem of homelessness of animals. Moreover, it is extremely rare that this issue becomes the subject of in-depth scientific analysis. Therefore, the intention is that the dissemination of previously unpublished research results will help develop an optimal model for the administrative-law protection of homeless animals and will raise the degree of public awareness of the legal protection of animals, which is one of the conditions for further progress in civilisation.
Artykuł ma charakter naukowo-badawczy, a jego zasadniczym celem jest porównanie polskich i estońskich uregulowań prawnych dotyczących zwierząt bezdomnych (bezpańskich) oraz dokonanie ich oceny i sformułowanie postulatów optymalizacyjnych. Analiza regulacji krajowych została poprzedzona ustaleniami, w jaki sposób przedmiotowa kwestia unormowana jest w prawie międzynarodowym i unijnym. Za podjęciem tego zagadnienia przemawia przede wszystkim fakt, iż problem ochrony zwierząt bezdomnych, mimo stale rosnącej ich liczby, został zmarginalizowany we wszystkich omawianych w tym tekście porządkach prawnych. Zarówno w Polsce, jak i w Estonii przyjęte rozwiązania normatywne bardziej skoncentrowane są na usuwaniu skutków niż na zapobieganiu przyczynom problemu bezdomności wśród zwierząt. Ponadto niezwykle rzadko zagadnienie to staje się przedmiotem pogłębionych analiz naukowych. Z założenia więc upowszechnienie niepublikowanych wcześniej wyników badań pomoże w wypracowaniu optymalnego modelu administracyjnoprawnej ochrony zwierząt bezdomnych oraz podniesie poziom świadomości społecznej w przedmiocie ochrony prawnej zwierząt, co jest jednym z warunków dalszego postępu cywilizacyjnego.

The article of Sara Kruszona entitled The Theater of Death treats the spectacular-theatrical character of collective hunts. The author puts forward the thesis that these hunts can be read as a form of a spectacle. The starting point for consideration was the article Customs and hunting ceremonies in collective hunts, derived from the website of the Hunting Signals Group, “Hagard”. This text is a kind of a scenario of hunting ceremonies taking place during collective hunts. By quoting its fragments in his text on the Theater of Death, the author proves the thesis about the pageantry of hunting rituals. Events which take place during hunting, their organization and arrangement, whose important aspects include tradition and ritual character, interpreted as a kind of spectacle. It was similar to the ancient venatio. The author also refers to the ancient roots of performances with the participation of hunters, i.e. venatio, described by Miroslaw Kocur in his book entitled The Roots of the Theater. A particularly important argument for the possibility of considering hunting as a form of a show is the hunters’ awareness of role–playing and audience presence. This can be understood by guests invited to the hunt as well as opponents of hunting, or as a community focused on their activity and ready to criticize it. The awareness of the presence of spectators determines the obvious awareness of playing whether the hunters perform a specific social function in the spectacle called hunting. The finale of this performance, played according to a strictly defined scenario and with strictly assigned roles, is pokot. The author draws attention to the fact that the system of animal bodies and all activities related to them resemble a specific form of a spectacle – anatomical theater.

Amidst the many topics important for the shaping of character of adolescents in Original Stories, Mary Wollstonecraft places such important issues as our attitude towards animals. She wants to convince the readers that not only should we not hurt animals but also offer them our aid. The education that sensitises us to the fate of animals is an important element of moral education. Being kind for the beings of other species is what makes us better, more compassionate. And reversely being cruel towards animals turns us into brutes capable of hurting also people. Tormenting animals is moreover inconsistent with God’s will and leads to the infliction of completely unnecessary and senseless suffering. Which is why it deserves severe condemnation.

Introduction: Dermatophytes are a closely related group of keratinophilic fungi. They encompass important etiological agents of superficial fungal infections. These fungi are able to invade keratinized tissues of humans and animals, causing dermatophytosis (ringworm) of hair, nails or skin. The aim: Traditional diagnostics of ringworm is based on morphological identification of cultured fungi and is time-consuming. Materials and methods: In this study, we applied a method patented by Brillowska-Dabrowska and coworkers (Brillowska-Dąbrowska A, Saunte DM, Arenderup MC, 2007, Five-hour diagnosis of dermatophyte nail infections with specific detection of Trichophyton rubrum. J Clin Microbiol 45: 1200-1204) which involves extraction of fungal DNA and PCR amplification with pan-dermatophyte primers to confirm the presence of dermatophytes. Results: The method used here is able to confirm the presence of dermatophyte DNA in pure cultures in less than 5 hours.

Due to their activity against bacteria, viruses, and fungi, antimicrobial peptides are important factors in the innate resistance system of humans and animals. They are called "new generation antibiotics" for their potential use in preventive and therapeutic medicine. The most numerous group of antimicrobial peptides is a family of cationic peptides which include defensins and cathelicidins. Among them the most common are peptides with a beta-sheet structure containing three intra-molecular disulphide bonds, called defensins, comprising three classes: alpha, beta, and theta. The class of beta-defensins is the largest one. Their transcripts have been found in many tissues of humans and animals. The aim of this paper is to present the current knowledge about antimicrobial peptides from the defensin family in farm animals, their expression, polymorphism, as well as the potential of their use as genetic markers of health and production traits.
