The area of mathematical interests of Professor Andrzej Lasota was very large: ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, dynamical systems, multifunctions, differential inclusions, functional differential equations, equations with retarded arguments, ergodic theory, invariant measures, chaos, stochastic differential equations, control theory, fixed point theory, theory of Markov operators, theory of fractals, theory of dimensions, biomathematics. In all these branches he obtained original and essential results.

When taking his diploma of Master of Science in Architecture, he was already a university graduate; he also completed a year of studies in France, at Poitiers University.

Relationship between the body and the soul is one of the crucial issues that romantic anthropology, whose representatives included Andrzej Towiański, is concerned with. The founder of Koło Sprawy Bożej was convinced, just like other romanticists, that material world was subordinate to spiritual reality, as well as that the spirit unquestionably preceded over the body. Towiański underscored the key role that the body should play in one’s striving to achieve Christian perfection, which he believed to be a state of full maturity of a human being. According to Towiański, the body can only serve a man appropriately, when it is subject to the will of the spirit. Thus, the body should be appreciated and seen as a means to spiritual improvement and the entrance gate to a higher reality. On the one hand, this improvement should be achieved through offering a ‘three-fold Christian sacrifice’, recognising God’s intention in suffering that is being experienced and observing strict ethics in marital life, and on the other hand appreciation of bodily needs: cultural entertainment, proper fun and fitness.

The article contains an analysis of family and genealogical connections of one of the most prominent historical figures of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 17th century – Andrzej Olszowski, Archbishop of Gniezno and Primate of Poland – politician, clergyman, writer and intellectual. He was a descendant of a middle-class gentry who settled in the land of Łęczyca, sealing himself with the Wilczekosy (Wolf Scythes) coat of arms, attesting to the origin of Clan Prusy (the medieval refugees from Pruthenia attacked by Theutonic Order). Despite this modest pedegree he had such outstanding figures among his ancestors as Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski – a Renaissance writer and humanist, and his nepoties included the famous brothers Załuscy – bishops, patrons of art and science, the creators of the library, which became the leaven of the polish National Library.

Die zwei wissenschaftlichen Hauptinteressensschwerpunkte Andrzej Nadolskis waren, ohne jeden Zweifel, Archäologie des Mittelalters und des Militärwesens, und zwar in allen Aspekten: von Waffenkunde über Schlachtfelduntersuchungen bis hin zu Organisierungsfragen der militärischen Strukturen. The article is an attempt at identifying Jewish traits in Andrzej Bart’s literary work and film documents. The Jewish elements tend to be unevenly distributed and include references to biographies of actual individuals, creating fictional figures, creating visions of real and/or fictional events enriched with symbolic dimensions. The Jewish theme is the core of the plot only in one of the novels (Fabryka muchołapek – The Flytrap Factory). The Jewish elements in Bart’s prose complement each other, or comment on each other, co-creating the writer’s  narration, and are rarely part of a work’s realistic representation. The elements have many roles to play: contextual reference, attempts to present the multi-ethnic structure of Polish society, tackling the subject of the Holocaust, or antisemitism and the difficult Polish –Jewish relations. Bart tends to discuss this issue more frequently in his films, in the Złe miasto? (Evil City?) documentary series and in Radegast, shot in cooperation with Borys Lankosz.

The contents of the article is a comparison of two important in the post-war Polish art pictures: ‘The Queue Goes On’ of 1956 by Andrzej Wróblewski (1927-1957) and its travesty – ‘The Queue Still Goes On’ (for Andrzej Wróblewki) of 1973 by Zbylut Grzywacz (1939-2004). Both works had political meaning – read usually as existential metaphors of communist system. Wróblewski’s painting was read in the spirit of marxist revisionism of the ‘Thaw’ period, Grzywacz’s painting in the spirit of democratic rhetoric used by the opposition fighting for ‘human rights’ in the 1970s. The author compares both pictures, together with the expressions assumed as their titles, and exams the relations between them. Art history methods play an additional role as the actual aim of consideration is showing the deeper, spiritual ground of relations of both artists. It is a task for hermeneutics, which is described by the author as a gift of reading signs and following these signs as far as possible. ‘Each repeti- tion is equally primary as the work itself’ these words by Hans-Georg Gadamer are a compositional frame for the essay and an interpretation directive. How did Grzywacz ‘repeat’ Wróblewski’s painting? The author is looking for an answer on a few interpretation planes. Wróblewski’s art was rich in symbols of metamorphosis – it was permeated by the typical for European post-war art stream of cosmic vitalism and biological regeneration, appearing in visual metaphors of ‘a life chain’ among others. Examining reflections of this stream in Grzywacz’s art reveals its traces not in the area of moralistics and history, but in science. Both painters were agnostics, with Grzywacz being a naturalist – he was an active collector in the field of geology and entomology. Symbols of metamorphosis, which were unusually seldom in his painting, were connected with these sciences – the artist’s life passions – what is proved in his picture ‘Chrysalis’ painted during his terminal illness.

The article discusses the way in which the symbolism of chimera, a mythic monster from Lycia (with lion’s mouth, goat’s torso and serpent’s tail) slayed by Bellerophon, was used in Silva Rerum IV (In sophistats Serveticos et novorum arianorum faecem censurae catholicae, around 1565) by Andrzej Trzecieski junior. This work is also a testimony to the stormy disputes with Arianism followers which engaged Stanisław Orzechowski through, inter alia, a treatise known to Trzecieski, namely Chimaera sive de Stancari Fvnesta Regno Poloniae Secta (1562). The author of Sylvarum libri II undoubtedly based his work on Orzechowski’s piece, but referred to chimera in a different way. Chimera in Trzecieski’s view was used not as a direct attack against particular persons, to defend the papacy, the ecclesiastical power and king’s majesty, but above all to exemplify the heretics’ beliefs upon the Holy Trinity or the everlasting divinity of Christ, and to show the reasons for the heretics’ mistakes.
