Opis:
Dating and time-reckoning has always meant a lot more than simply keeping track of time. It is of course true that from very early times onwards all people, either pastoralists or agriculturalist, had to take the seasons - which means the solar cycle - into account for the simple reason of bare survival. Since a year is far too long for many practical arrangements the omnipresence of the moon provided a perfect solution, the moon's phases turned out to be an ideal length to divide one year into smaller units. The integration of a lunar cycle into the solar system is not self-evident though and the astronomical knowledge of people can often be judged by the way they tried to solve this dilemma. Still, a lot more factors come into play when time-reckoning and dating systems come into being. Both in the calendar - the division of every individual year - and in year-counting - some kind of superstructure for several years - religious, cultic, ideological and political elements played an important role. Since the sun, the stars and the moon were regularly worshipped in most religions in Antiquity, their cycles often determined religious festivals and other cultic events and therefore the calendar was closely linked with religion. Ideology, especially royal ideology, is found mainly in the system of year-counting.

Opis:
The second half of the 3rd century saw the Seleucid monarchy weaken considerably. The reign of Seleucus II brought difficult battles against Ptolemy III Euergetes (the Third Syrian War) and attempts to overcome massive internal problems. During the war against Egypt, he ultimately managed to recapture northern Syria but Ptolemy III held on to the port of Seleucia Pieria, which was key for the Seleucids, and captured a number of places in Asia Minor. It was there that the Seleucids suffered their greatest territorial losses - they lost almost all their footholds on the coasts of Cilicia, Lycia, Caria and Ionia. The Egyptian king even seized Ainos and Maronea on the Thracian coast. What also had an impact on Seleucus II losing his influences in Asia Minor was his fratricidal war against Antiochus Hierax, backed by the kings of Pergamon, Capadocia and Bithynia. The defeated Seleucus had to reconcile himself with his brother's independence in Asia Minor, the latter, however, subsequently suffered a defeat in his war against Pergamon, which ultimately led to the Seleucids losing their Asian Minor territories. The dynasty also faced enormous challenges in the East, where Bactria and Sogdiana seceded, and Parthia was seized by the Parni.

Opis:
Absence of sources is why we know little about the last kings of the Seleucid dynasty and their reigns. One exception is Demetrius III (97/96-88/87 BC), a son of Antiochus VIII Grypus. What knowledge we have of him we owe to his role in the history of Judea at the end of Alexander Jannaeus' reign (103-86 BC). Josephus' historical works suggest that the king of Syria became involved in a conflict which broke out in Judea between Alexander Jannaeus and a group of his opponents led by the Pharisees. In doing so, he lent the latter his powerful military assistance. It proved so substantial that in a battle near Shechem Alexander Jannaeus' army was defeated. Only a lucky coincidence enabled him still to stay in power and soon to suppress his opposition (cf. Jos. BJ 1, 92-95, AJ 13, 376-379). This historical episode is exceptional in that Demetrius III was the first king of Syria since Antiochus VII Sidetes to stand on Judean soil and, at that, as an ally of one of local religious groups. It is this fact that makes the event worth looking at through the lens of not only the confl ict between Alexander Jannaeus and the Pharisees, but also of Demetrius III's objectives in interfering in Judea's internal affairs.

Calabria is a region where we may find many traces of very old settlements and the development of human civilization, because it was already inhabited during the Paleolithic Era. Its later, over two thousand years history is characterized by the influence of such ethno-cultural groups as the Greeks, the Brutti, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Saracens and the Normans. Hence, Calabria has become an infinite source of fascination for all who seek the remains of ancient times in Italy. The purpose of my article is to present the history of Scolacium – one of the ancient towns in the Italian province of Calabria basing, above all, on selected literary evidence on the issue. My studies concentrate mainly on pointing out the numerous references and allusions to its name and on the analysis of longer or shorter depictions of the town found in various Greek and Roman literary works and their application in a chronological reconstruction of the town’s past events as an example of historical processes observed on the territory of Magna Graecia.

Opis:
Eusebius' Chronika was a remarkable achievement in the field of ancient chronography, not least as the conclusion of extensive research running since the beginning of the Hellenistic period. It was a double work, composed some time before AD 311 and expanded shortly after AD 325. The first part, now usually called Chronographia, was a detailed introduction, aiming at collecting the raw material from all sources then available, and setting out the plan of the project. The second part, known as Kanones (Chronikoi Kanones), which carried its own preface, was a grand exposition (utilising the data of the first part) in the form of a table consisting of up to nine parallel columns to be read across, thus presenting a synchronistic universal history at a glance.1 Only fragments survive of the Greek original, primarily in George the Syncellus (ca. AD 800) and an anonymous excerptor (known as 'Excerpta Eusebiana' from a MS of the 15th century AD). But we have a nearly complete Armenian translation (earliest copy ca. 13th century AD), a Latin translation of the second part by Jerome (with his own preface and extended to AD 380/1), as well as two Syriac epitomes, one of which is believed to have been compiled by Joshua the Stylite (8th century AD), and other witnesses including two very early Arab chroniclers, one being Agapius of Hierapolis, ca. AD 942.

Opis:
The history of the Holy City in the pre-Israelite period is very incomplete, therefore one can hardly gain a thorough knowledge about it. It was plundered and destroyed, then built anew and re-built and then again it rose phoenix-like from the ashes. This phenomenon poses considerable difficulties for historians and archaeologists. Especially the period of the Late Bronze arouses numerous controversies; there are no material traces from this period of the city at all, therefore some scholars conclude that it did not exist then. It seems that this standpoint is too radical. Nevertheless the history of this period should be treated with utmost care, until further evidence has arrived. Throughout this period Jerusalem was a small town, and did not mean much in the main trends of the history of the ancient Near East. A decisive turn in the history of the town took place ca. 1000 BC (this is approximately the date of the appearance of David), when Israelites conquered it and changed it into their capital. Jerusalem had been transformed into a centre from which were sent orders that influenced the lives of the inhabitants of the whole Palestine.

Zanim Euzebiusz z Cezarei napisał swoje najsławniejsze dzieło Historia Kościelna (Ἐκκλησιαστική ἱστορία), zredagował Kronikę, to znaczy: dzieło historyczne, które streszcza dzieje świata. Hieronima. To tłumaczenie św. Hieronim uzupełnił dochodząc do roku 378 po Chr. Hieronim przeczytał Kronikę Euzebiusza i przetłumaczył ją mniej więcej w roku 380. Zrobił to podczas swojego pobytu w Konstantynopolu.

The amount and timing of meals in various monasteries evolved with the development of Christian monasticism. Although he founded numerous communities, the creator of the first “Rule,” Pachomius, did not see the need to precisely regulate this issue. However, successive authors writing rules increasingly addressed this problem. An analysis of selected rules reveals that a peak in the development of monastic legislation concerning this matter was the rules of Benedict and the mysterious Master, which regulated even the amount of bread that monks should eat each day.

As the title of the renowned book by the French churchman Honoré Bonet (Bouvet) suggests, the work belongs to a group of military handbooks of knighthood which was popular in Western Europe during the Middle Ages.3 However, the Reverend Bonet gives neither any detailed instructions nor overview of battlefield tactics, as they are traditionally understood in terms of arrangements of infantry troops or dispositions of cavalry; the author is equally uninterested in giving technical details of what war strategy should look like.4 For a long time all these military issues were the traditional subject matter of many manuals written in antiquity (especially in the Hellenistic epoch and the times of the Roman Empire) and later, and also in the medieval Eastern Roman Empire.

Mirabilia Urbis Romae
Roman Senate
ancient history
Capitoline Hill
Opis:
The oldest version of Mirabilia Urbis Romae was written ca. 1143, i. e. at the same time when the republican fraction in medieval Rome renewed the Roman Senate. Fragments of the oldest version suggest a link between the origins of the treatise and the republican fraction. This connection has been repeatedly pointed out since the 19th century by such historians as: Louis Duchesne, Percy Ernst Schramm, Ferdinand Gregorovius. Nowadays the existence of this link is often negated, e.g. in the works of Chiara Frugoni and Nine Robintje Miedema, who suggest that the treatise has only literary meaning. But the evidence indicating the republican character of the treatise is too strong to accept without objections that the oldest version of Mirabilia is a mere work of literature. The text of the treatise is filled with admiration for the ancient Rome much in the same spirit as the actions of the Senate aimed at restoring some of the old splendor to the neglected city. This clearly indicates a republican undertone in the treatise. The newly elected Senate renovated some of the ancient monuments, ordered the protection of the Traian’s column and began the restoration of the Capitoline Hill, where on the ruins of the Tabularium the Palace of the Senators was build. The importance of the Capitoline is clearly stressed in the oldest version of Mirabilia, where that hill is referred as Caput Mundi. The republican meaning of the treatise is also indicated by: the content of the legend about the equestrian monument of Marcus Aurelius, the lack of mention of other ancient bronze monuments displayed in front of the Lateran Palace, which might be interpreted as the symbols of the power of the popes who considered themselves as heirs of Constantine the Great. The researches conducted by Ingo Herklotz and Norberto Gramaccini also undermine the thesis that the treatise is a mere work of literature. Considering all the evidence, Louis Duchesne’s thesis that the oldest version of Mirabilia was written in the same spirit which inspired the revolution on the Capitoline Hill in 1143–44 and the restoration of the Roman Senate, is still very probable.

Opis:
This paper provides an overview of the importance of dwarf figures/jesters in Ancient Indian history and society. There are numerous dwarf-like figures depicted in ancient Indian temples. These little figurines would have not only filled the area and add decorative value but also, they have a small but significant place in iconography. A dwarf-like figure, the Vidushaka, who was a brahmin with a tuft on his head and a staff in his hand, was found on the walls of Ajanta and in the Natyashastra text. His occupation is to light the stressful environment by making the court laughing. It goes without saying how valuable the Vidushaka is as a kind of entertainment in ancient India. The objective of this research is to look at how the Vidushaka (jester) had been contributing to the ‘entertainment industry’ of ancient India and how they have been portrayed through out the history (from ancient to medieval times). This would also allow us to discover that jesters were not only adept at entertaining others with amusing jokes, but also able to express himself on the oddities of human life.

The figure of the first Roman emperor in many ways had an impact on the Polish culture, especially in historiography and literature. In my paper I focus on some issues connected with the subject. I discuss the ideas presented by Tadeusz Zieliński, one of the most eminent researchers of the ancient world in Europe in the first part of 20th century. He devoted a significant part of his opus to present his own vision of Augustus seen as a reformer of the Roman state religion. Zieliński built the emperor’s image as the saviour of the Roman world in the face of „the end of times”. This term played significant role in Zieliński’s thinking about Roman history at the end of the Republic. For the Polish scholar celebration of the secular game in 17 BC was the final task done by Augustus. This task Zieliński defined as the sacred mission and connected with the figure of Sibyl and the impact of the Etruscan theory of saeculum. For Zieliński, Augustus belonged to the most important men of providence in Roman history. In the same way I discuss the ideas presented by Ludwik Piotrowicz and Mieczysław St. Popławski. Both scholars analised the question of imperial cult in depth. Popławski expressed original view on Augustus apotheosis seen as the development of imperial cult in transcendental perspective. Piotrowicz instead saw this problem as a purely political phenomenon. Last part of my paper is devoted to short resentation of the echos of Augustus’ bimillenium in Polish scholar activity.

Opis:
(Polish title: Królestwo Cypru jako obiekt zainteresowan panstw sródziemnomorskich w latach 1192-1489. Próba zarysowania). Under the rule of the French Lusignan dynasty, Cyprus quickly became the focus of interest to other countries: Sicily under the reign of the Hohenstaufen, Anjou and Aragon houses, Italian countries of Genoa, Venice and Duchy of Savoy, England and African Mamluk Sultanate. Initially the interest was based on political reasons, however, with the arrival of the Crusaders to the Holy Land and then the development of trade with Muslims there were economic reasons for seizing power over the island. What is more, the above deliberation clearly reveals the declining political position of the Lusignan dynasty who starting from the end of the 14thcentury could only observe how Mediterranean countries fought for control over Cyprus. After the death of Peter I of Cyprus (1359-1369), the most prominent king and the conqueror of Alexandria, the period of glory, when the island infl uenced international policy mostly - though not only - in the eastern region of the Mediterranean Sea, came to an end. From then on Cyprus was merely a subject of diplomatic, economic as well as military efforts and conflicts undertaken by Mediterranean countries. The present paper does not assume to exhaust the subject. However, it is an introduction to a broader research on the matter in question which is immensely relevant for depicting the medieval political and economic situation in the Mediterranean Sea region.

Opis:
The Illiad, traditionally attributed to Homer, is a multilayered story about the heroic past of the Achaean aristocracy. Though engaged in an unjust war and plunder, thus contaminated by guilt, ate, the Achaeans strive for the very model of virtue, arete – courage and wisdom paired with respect shown towards the defeted enemy. The glory of arete is compromised on both sides of the conflict, the Acheans (Achilles and Agamemnon) and the Trojans (Paris and Hector). Their guilt, born of temptation which they – as mortals – cannot resist, paradoxically makes them responsible for the evil they have no power to contain. Their punishment thus becomes their atonement for their wrongdoing and their chance to redeem their discredited heroism and virtue. All these ideas are conveyed by the metaphors employed by Homer throughout his complex masterpiece. His way of presenting the protagonists and narrating their stories creates a brilliant composition of meanings and harmony, which the European scholastics many centuries later described as the constituent elements of beauty: proportio, integritas and claritas. The Illiad marks an enormously important stage in the development of the ancient search of the true goodness and beauty, kalokagathia (Ancient Greek: nobility, goodness, from kalos: beautiful, kai: and, agathos: good).

Opis:
The article describes the institution of the Professors' General Meeting which constituted the highest collegial self-government body at universities in the Second Polish Republic. The basic formal and legal conditions for the functioning of the institution are described. The body of the article is divided into six parts. The introduction points to the unique nature of the General Meeting in the context of Polish academic legislation of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century as well as the grounds for commencing the research from the date of 15 September 1920. Subsequently, the system of public academic education is described, including the classification of universities within the scope relevant for the subject of the research, and academic privileges considered unique in comparison with other research and education units are specified. The second chapter discusses the institution of the Professors' General Meeting and its three stages of development that can be identified in the interwar period. The author also analyzes the member roster and its changes in time as well as the impact that the academic groups (teachers, administrative employees and students, including all ranks and categories) exercised upon the functioning of the university, comparing the 1920-1939 period and the Third Polish Republic. The next chapter describes the basic procedures of the Professors' General Meeting. The further deliberations concern the detailed competences of the body with special emphasis put on the reduction of these competences and their classification in terms of dependence on or independence from the approval of the Minister of Religious Denominations and Public Education. Additionally, the specific character of the Professors' General Meeting in one-faculty universities in 1933-1937 is also discussed since the rights of that body in such cases were extended by the responsibilities of the faculty council and the university senate. The article is concluded with a summary of basic facts from the history of the institution of the Professors' General Meeting at public universities in the interwar Poland and an attempt to explain the conspicuous tendencies in its development and the reasons for this development.
