Opis:
Purpose: The aim of this article is to understand how Polish winemakers make decisions about the type of production; to identify barriers of implementation of organic practices organic, to understand the values that are behind the decision-making process in the context of the three areas of sustainable development and present recommendations in relation to the conclusions. Design/methodology/approach: Methodological approach is based on Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP). The study included 18 values grouped according to belonging to the environmental, social and economic area. The importance of each value was compared by the respondents with the other values, which allowed to understand the course of the decision-making process in the context of the goals and importance of environmental, social and economic values represented by organic and conventional winemakers. Findings: The research revealed significant differences in the approach to the environmental and economic values. Conventional and organic winemakers differ in the hierarchy of values in the context of the triad of sustainable development (economy, society, environment), and the key values taken into account by conventional winemakers are pecuniary values, in contrast to organic winemakers, for whom non-economic values are key, in particular from the area of environmental issues. Organic production is perceived by the surveyed winemakers in ideological rather than business terms. Conventional winemakers see the organic production as more complicated and problematic. Practical implications: This is a significant problem showing the lack of education and awareness in relation to the theory and practice of an organic production. This situation should be alarming for agricultural advisory institutions and the entities of administration responsible for the implementation of sustainable development assumptions. Originality/value: This paper fills a gap in literature science, by the Authors' knowledge, this is the first article to use the AHP method to determine how winemakers make decisions about the type of production.

Opis:
Groundwater is a precious source of fresh water and a major component of the entire water supply. Both water quality and quantity could be satisfied by evaluating the groundwater potential sites (GWPS). This paper analyzes the ground-water potentials in a semi-arid region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. It describes a standard methodology to identify and map GWPS using integrated Geographical Information System (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) methods. Eight parameters including elevation, slope, drainage density, lineaments density, soil, geology, land use/land cover and rainfall were integrated to explore areas with groundwater holding capability. GWPS were delineated through subjective weights assigned after coupling various thematic layers using Saaty’s Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP). The modelled GWPS were cross-checked with tube wells data. The result indicates that the central part of the study area has good potential for groundwater reserves/exploitation, where the factors i.e. moderate to high drainage density, sedimentary sequence of alluvial plain, low elevation etc. discern the central portion of the study area as a suitable site for groundwater. This study suggests that the applied method proves to be very significant and reliable tool for timely assessment of quality assured evaluation of groundwater resources. This study could be a systematic guide for future investigations for water related explorations, especially in semi-arid environments.

Today’s concern and problem for most of the companies is the way of surviving and prospering in current and future periods of time in the marketplace. Sustainable competitive ability can be one of the ways of adaptation to the global business and rapid environment requirements. Operational competitiveness is not easy to be sustainably improved because of unpredictable environment situations, such as continuous increasing customer needs, global competitive environment, rapid and unpredictable changes in government policy, company crisis during significant changes etc. However, it is possible to make adaptive adjustments on operations strategy level in dynamic business environment and to become competitive enough compared to the competitors. The purpose of this paper is to define and assess sustainable competitive advantage and the direction of development in housing business. It can be analysed by two core factors, i.e. Sense and Respond (S&R) methodology, Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP) as well as Sustainable competitive advantage (SCA) method. This study also focuses on applying S&R method in order to optimize operational competitiveness as well as defining the competitive priorities of the case company. The analysis results show the critical areas in different departments of the case company, which can help the managers to make quick decisions. In addition, they reveal that during the crisis the resource allocation is continuously changing and therefore the operation strategy of the case company is not well defined as well as competitive advantages are not enough sustainable.
