In his article, the author points out the gradual domination of leftists in universities, which eventually affected all American institutions. This is very evident today in the leftist attitudes of the media, the legal profession, the bureaucracy, the government, and even the clergy. The author argues that because of this transformation, if one wants to assess the state of American society, one must address what has happened in the universities. As universities have normalized Marxist cultural principles and attitudes, the critic of higher education must expose these Marxist tendencies in schools. Because this Marxist tendency now dominates university culture, it must be demanded that higher education reform today be countercultural.
Autor w swoim artykule zwraca uwagę na stopniową dominację lewicowców na uniwersytetach amerykańskich, która dotknęła w końcu wszystkie amerykańskie instytucje. Jest to dziś bardzo widoczne w lewicowych postawach mediów, zawodów prawniczych, biurokracji, rządu, a nawet duchowieństwa. Autor zwraca uwagę, że z powodu tej transformacji, jeśli ktoś chce ocenić stan amerykańskiego społeczeństwa, musi zająć się tym, co stało się na uniwersytetach. W związku z tym, że uniwersytety unormowały marksistowskie zasady i postawy kulturowe, krytyk szkolnictwa wyższego musi zdemaskować te marksistowskie tendencje w szkołach. Ze względu na fakt, iż ta marksistowska wrażliwość dominuje obecnie w kulturze uniwersyteckiej, należy domagać się, by reforma szkolnictwa wyższego była dziś kontrkulturowa.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie niektórych aspektów dyskusji na temat trwałości i znaczenia wartości purytańskich we współczesnym życiu Amerykanów. Kwestia oddziaływania XVII-wiecznej myśli teologiczno-społecznej na system wartości na początku kolonialnej, a potem państwowej rzeczywistości Stanów Zjednoczonych jest jednym z istotniejszych wątków ich historiografii i refleksji społecznej. Stanowiska w tej sprawie rozwijały się i zdobywały uznanie w różny sposób, zwykle skupiając się wokół wiary w istnienie tego oddziaływania, różniąc się poglądem na znaczenie poszczególnych jego elementów i ich żywotność. Autor stoi na stanowisku, że ideały purytańskie wywarły znaczący wpływ na społeczeństwo amerykańskie, stając się jednym z najsilniejszych filarów amerykańskiej tożsamości historycznej i kulturowej. Począwszy od charakterystyki purytanizmu, odwołującej się do ważnych aspektów teologii (teologia przymierza lub federalna), analiza koncentruje się na takich cechach, jak indywidualna wolność i samodzielność, antyautorytaryzm, współodpowiedzialność z elementami demokracji i dowartościowanie edukacji.
Ziel des Artikels ist es, einige Aspekte der Diskussion über die Dauerhaftigkeit und Bedeutung puritanischer Werte im zeitgenössischen Leben der Amerikaner. Die Frage nach dem Einfluss des theologisch-sozialen Denkens des siebzehnten Jahrhunderts auf das Wertesystem zu Beginn der kolonialen und dann staatlichen Realität der Vereinigten Staaten ist einer der bedeutendsten Fäden ihrer Geschichtsschreibung und sozialen Reflexion. Positionen zu diesem Thema entwickelten und erlangten Anerkennung auf verschiedene Weise, in der Regel zentriert um den Glauben an die Existenz dieses Einflusses, unterschiedlich in ihren Ansichten über die Bedeutung seiner einzelnen Elemente und ihre Vitalität. Der Autor vertritt den Standpunkt, dass puritanische Ideale einen bedeutenden Einfluss auf die amerikanische Gesellschaft hatten und zu einer der stärksten Säulen der amerikanischen historischen und kulturellen Identität wurden. Ausgehend von der Charakteristik des Puritanismus, die sich auf wichtige Aspekte der Theologie (Bündnistheologie oder Bundestheologie) bezieht, konzentriert sich die Analyse auf solche Merkmale wie individuelle Freiheit und Eigenständigkeit, Antiautoritarismus, Mitverantwortung mit Elementen der Demokratie und die Wertschätzung von Bildung.
The paper aims to present some aspects of the discussion OF the durability and significance of Puritan values in contemporary life of Americans. The issue of the influence of the 17th-century theological and social thought on the system of values, the colonial at the beginning and then the state reality of the United States, has been one of the most vital themes in their historiography and social reflection. Positions on the matter developed and gained recognition in various ways, but they usually centered around the belief in the existence of the influence, differing in their estimation of the importance of its individual elements and their vitality over the time. The author takes the view that Puritan ideals have significantly influenced American society, becoming one of the strongest pillars of the American historical and cultural identity. Starting with a characterisation of some important aspects of the theology of Puritanism (covenant or federal theology), the analysis focuses on its features such as individual freedom and self-reliance, anti-authoritarianism, co-responsibility with elements of democracy, and respect for education.

The article constitutes an account of the summer program aimed at learning the English language and studying American culture, which was held in St. Mary Magdalene High School in Poznańin the years 2015-2018,thanks to the cooperation with an American organization WIESCO (Wisconsin International Educational Scientific Cultural Organization). The main idea for the program was to invite volunteers from the United States, who, in return for their stay in Poznań and sightseeing of the city and the Greater Poland region, conducted interactive English lessons as well as afternoon activities, which provided participants with an opportunity to master their language competence through immersion in American culture. During the four editions of the program, our school hosted interesting and committed instructors, who were eager to share both their work experience and professional knowledge, thereby enabling young people to develop communication skills and the ability to speak fluently.
Artykuł stanowi relację z przebiegu wakacyjnego programu nauki języka angielskiego i poznawania kultury amerykańskiej, odbywającego się w Liceum Ogólnokształcącym św. Marii Magdaleny w Poznaniu w latach 2015-2018, dzięki współpracy z amerykańską organizacją WIESCO (Wisconsin International Educational Scientific Cultural Organization). Główną ideą programu było zaproszenie wolontariuszy ze Stanów Zjednoczonych, którzy w zamian za pobyt w Poznaniu oraz zwiedzanie miasta i Wielkopolski, prowadzili interaktywne lekcje języka angielskiego oraz popołudniowe zajęcia, w trakcie których uczestnicy mieli możliwość doskonalenia swoich kompetencji językowych przez immersję, czyli zanurzenie w kulturze amerykańskiej. W ciągu czterech edycji programu gościliśmy w naszej szkole ciekawych i oddanych trenerów, którzy chętnie dzielili się zarówno swoim doświadczeniem zawodowym, jak i profesjonalną wiedzą, umożliwiając młodym ludziom rozwijanie sprawności komunikacyjnych oraz umiejętności płynnego mówienia.

Opis:
United under Regan by anti-communism, the US Conservative movement is now deeply divided. This division was already visible in the so-called Sarah Palin’s conservative populism and the Tea Party movement. However, it showed itself in full force when the Republican party elite, living in symbiosis with liberals from the Democratic Party, had to respond to Donald Trump’s electoral success. It turned out that the traditional Republican electorate did not back the party’s globalist elite, but an outsider. Trump gained the support of that section of conservatives who rejected integration into the hegemonic ideology of leftist liberalism with its destructive narrative of “American iniquity” and the adoption of the technocratic global oligarchy model as the only possible “end of history”. Conservatives supporting Trump’s candidacy referred to the tradition of American conservatism, appealing to the Founding Fathers, the Constitution and national pride and supporting the idea of metaphysical freedom, ontologically rooted in being greater than the autonomous will of the individual. Thus, the possibility of agreement with the oligarchic elite professing identity liberalism is very limited. However, it is possible to create a tactical alliance between conservatives, especially religious ones, and libertarians. Despite fundamental anthropological and philosophical differences, the link is a common enemy – liberal identity politics. Additionally, Trump’s victory forces all currents in Regan’s conservative coalition to revise their goals and adjust to the new reality, as Trump did not appeal to economic globalism but called for the restoration of social solidarity and republican responsibility for all. He was aware of the possibility of creating a new coalition in the camp of conservatives and republicans, which must find a new common political goal, combining social and cultural conservatism with economic populism. Donald Trump, however, met with stiff opposition from conservatives who accept the technocratic hegemony of leftist liberalism along with the sexual revolution and new anthropology.
Zjednoczony za czasów Regana, dzięki antykomunizmowi, amerykański ruch konserwatywny jest obecnie głęboko podzielony. Podział ten widać było jeszcze w tzw. konserwatywnym populizmie Sary Palin oraz ruchu Tea Party. Uwidocznił się on jednak z całą mocą, gdy żyjące w symbiozie z liberałami z Partii Demokratycznej elity Partii Republikańskiej musiały zareagować na sukces wyborczy Trumpa. Okazało się, że tradycyjny elektorat Republikanów nie poparł globalistycznie nastawionych elit partii, lecz człowieka „z zewnątrz”. Trump zyskał poparcie tej części konserwatystów, którzy odrzucali integrację z hegemoniczną ideologią lewicowego liberalizmu wraz z jego narracją „amerykańskiej nieprawości” oraz przyjęcie modelu technokratycznej, globalnej oligarchii jako jedynie możliwego „końca historii”. Konserwatyści popierający Trumpa odwoływali się do tradycji konserwatyzmu amerykańskiego, stale odnoszącego się do ojców założycieli, Konstytucji i narodowej dumy, popierającego ideę wolności metafizycznej, ontologicznie zakorzenionej w bycie większym niż autonomiczna wola jednostki. Tym samym płaszczyzna porozumienia z wyznającą liberalizm tożsamościowy elitą oligarchiczną jest bardzo niewielka. Możliwe okazuje się jednak stworzenie taktycznego sojuszu konserwatystów, zwłaszcza religijnych, z libertarianami. Mimo zasadniczych różnic antropologicznych i filozoficznych łącznikiem jest wspólny wróg – liberalna polityka tożsamościowa. Zwycięstwo Trumpa sprawia, że wszystkie nurty konserwatywnej koalicji Regana muszą zrewidować swe cele i dostosować się do nowej rzeczywistości, tym bardziej że Trump nie odwoływał się do globalizmu ekonomicznego, lecz wzywał do odbudowy solidarności społecznej i republikańskiej odpowiedzialności za wszystkich. Był świadom możliwości stworzenia nowej koalicji w obozie konserwatystów i republikanów, która musi znaleźć nowy wspólny cel polityczny, łączący konserwatyzm społeczny i kulturowy z populizmem gospodarczym. Donald Trump spotkał się jednak ze zdecydowanym sprzeciwem konserwatystów akceptujących technokratyczną hegemonię lewicowego liberalizmu wraz z rewolucją seksualną i nową antropologią.

The studies of (heavy) metal culture, the oeuvre of female artists, singers, lyricists, etc., still await in-depth interdisciplinary research endeavours. This article devoted special attention to female artists whose artistic, stage and image activities largely employ strategies of provocation, scandalisation, “ceremonial profanation.” When it comes to image (self)creation, an interesting category is the process of variability and fluidity of the emploi, especially in relation to subversive and transgressional activities. Wendy Orlean Williams, Heidi Shepherd and Carla Harvey from Butcher Babies discussed here have aroused frequent controversies in their activity in the patriarchal system of popular culture. The subversive artistic and image strategies used by the singers are nevertheless a part of the over fifty-years-long history and aesthetics of metal culture. The oeuvre of the Californian band forms an evident dialogue with the provocative art of the eccentric singer Williams. The colourful artistic emploi of those female artists attests to the diversity and complexity of metal culture.
W studiach nad kulturą (heavy)metalową twórczość artystek, piosenkarek, autorek tekstów etc. oczekuje jeszcze pogłębionych interdyscyplinarnych opracowań. W prezentowanym artykule szczególna uwaga została poświęcona twórczyniom, których działania artystyczne, sceniczne i wizerunkowe w znacznej mierze wykorzystują strategie prowokacji, skandalizacji, “ceremonialnych profanacji”. W perspektywie (auto)kreacji wizerunkowej interesujący okazuje się proces zmienności i płynności emploi, szczególnie w odniesieniu do działań o wywrotowym i transgresywnym charakterze. Omawiane w szkicu Wendy Orlean Williams oraz Heidi Shepherd i Carla Harvey z Butcher Babies to artystki, których działalność w patriarchalnym systemie kultury popularnej wzbudza(ła) znaczne kontrowersje. Stosowane przez piosenkarki subwersywne strategie artystyczne i wizerunkowe wpisują się jednak w długą, ponad pięćdziesięcioletnią historię i estetykę kultury metalowej. Twórczość kalifornijskiego zespołu stanowi czytelny dialog z prowokacyjną sztuką ekscentrycznej Williams. Barwne artystyczne emploi twórczyń świadczy zaś o różnorodności i złożoności kultury metalowej.

In The Rhetoric of Empire (1993), David Spurr analyzes journalistic discourse on the Third World and isolates a nucleus of rhetorical figures around which representations of the colonial and post-colonial other are articulated. In this paper, I will borrow, in particular, three of these rhetorical figures (naturalization, idealization, appropriation) and I will adapt them to the context of contemporary Anglo-American representations of Italian culture in popular literature. I will argue that a substantial number of contemporary works on Italy retains the basic assumption of a world ordered around a dichotomy between modern cultures and pre-modern ones, and makes of this taxonomy the basic spatiotemporal context for its narratives.

It argues that, during the Cold War, the allegiance of the sizeable Communist Party to the Soviet Union, on the one hand, and the Catholics’ distrust of Americanism, on the other, prevented US principles from shaping the nation’s republican institutions and playing a significant influence on Italian political culture, notwithstanding Washington’s efforts to spread its own philosophy in the country. It also suggests that, after the end of the West-versus-East ideological conflict, the two major party coalitions paid only lip service to US values and referred to them mainly out of expediency while jockeying for position in their struggle for political power.

The following article presents the history of Japanese jazz, from the first musical contacts to its contemporary successes and problems of the jazz music market. An important role in the development and evolution of jazz in Japan (even before the post-war US occupation of that country) was played by the presence of American military forces in the Philippines, which, as an American-dependent territory, maintained cultural contacts with the United States, where jazz had been born at the beginning of the 20th century and became one of the most popular forms of music. Apart from contact with Filipino musicians, who were the first source of jazz education for the Japanese, the rise of jazz cafés (jazzu-kissa) was also important for the development of jazz in the Land of the Cherry Blossom. The cafés played a huge role in generating interest in jazz and shaping musical tastes. The article also shows the influence of jazz on the formation of a modern, American-type lifestyle among the Japanese middle-class. In addition, the article discusses the complex issue of the authenticity of Japanese jazz in relation to American jazz and the role of world-famous Japanese musicians, such as Toshiko Akiyoshi, in overcoming stereotypes. The aim of the article is to demonstrate the universality and at the same time the local character of contemporary Japanese jazz as well as the distinguishing features of jazz in Japan.

The paper concerns the condition of selected aspects of American mythology in contemporary (from the 1960s till today) art and visual culture. Using specific examples and referring to theorists of American culture such as Sacvan Bercovitch, I argue that, despite varied strategies of appropriation and deconstructive critique of American ideals of freedom, equality and the country’s special role in the world, epitomized in the notion of American exceptionalism, the basic structure of the myth, due to its inextricable connection with American history, still persists as an important platform of action and a frame of reference. I analyze a selection of works referring to the Stars and Stripes, the Western film genre as well as the architecture of the post-9/11 World Trade Center, which both reveal the underlying structure of the myth, denaturalizing it, and a strong, continued attachment to it in the 20th and 21st century United States.

Opis:
Lawn has been used for landscaping, gardening, and beautification of homes and cities for a long time. The evolution of the lawn reflects important cultural and biophysical interactions between humans and nature. The American lawn, which was from Europe and has been a part of the American dream for home ownership and culture, has become an area going against nature for its extensively using chemicals and generated pollutions. Tracing how the lawn is becoming an important part of culture, this article focuses on more recent pollution and other environmental problems resulted from the lawn culture. It is argued, that awareness, education and changing culture of taste and preference can serve additional measures together with law and technological advancement toward sustainable lawn in the United States and the world.
Trawnik już o dawna był używany w kształtowaniu krajobrazu, ogrodnictwie i upiększaniu domów. Ewolucja trawników odzwierciedla istotne kulturowe i biofizyczne interakcje pomiędzy ludźmi i przyrodą. Trawnik trafił do Ameryki z Europy i stał się częścią amerykańskiego snu o własności i kulturze domu. Później stał się on jednak obszarem przeciwstawiającym się naturze z uwagi na intensywnie stosowanie substancji chemicznych i generowanie zanieczyszczeń. Wykazując, w jaki sposób trawnik staje się ważną częścią kultury, ten artykuł skupia się na bardziej aktualnych kwestiach zanieczyszczeń i innych problemów środowiskowych. Wykształcenie świadomości, zmieniającą się kultura smaku i preferencje, łącznie z prawem i technologią, mogą stanowić dodatkowe środki prowadzące w kierunku zrównoważonego kształtowania trawników w Stanach Zjednoczonych i na świecie.

The article is devoted to analysis of various countercultures aspects. The Author hypothesizes that the forms of contemporary politics are the result of two fundamentally interrelated strategic vectors. First is built upon a politics of ressentiment, setting “ordinary” folks against the socio-cultural elite which constututed to the "new right" movement. Second vector is originated of counterculture of the 1960s. The author states that counterculture exist without a singular identity. It is a space of hybridity and heterogenity. On the other hand counterculture is related to the concept of contemporary ambivalence as well it transforms of affective experience of everyday life. Another feature of counterculture is connected with the conviction that counterculture stands against of dominant culture. Also the author puts counterculture movements against various aspects of new american modernity including reconstruction of the practice of the hegemony, as well as through popular culture and reconstruction of the "left" and "right" idelogy and practice.

Especially after 1776, when the American democratic “experiment” giving rise to the United States proved durable, America became a source of social and political inspiration to generations of Europeans and non-Europeans alike. Unsurprisingly, also in the Italian context, the catalog of ways in which American values have been “translated into Italian” and adapted to Italy’s cultural space seems to be ever-growing. Yet, even though the cultural transfer dates back to Christopher Columbus, it is especially since the outbreak of World War II that Italy has been markedly influenced by intellectual and material values generated in the US. At some point, the fascination with the US soared to such a level that, incredibly as it may sound, one of the most iconic provinces of Italy would begin to imagine itself as the forty-ninth state of the US long before Alaska and Hawaii gained their present-day status: in Sicily, the American fascination seems never to abate.

Opis:
Given the historical proximity of Polish and Jewish groups, it is possible to identify their mutual interconnectedness. This paper presents one such example of the stereotypical Jewish Mother, in Israel known as a “Polish woman,” both in its sociohistorical and cultural aspect. Drawing from the theory of gendered and stereotypical representations, author traces a changing portrayal of the Jewish Mother on her way from the ghetto penury to middle-class affluence. Embodied by popular characters such as Molly Goldberg, the Jewish mother also became a target of bitter criticism, best rendered in the depiction of Sophie Portnoy-the iconic protagonist of Philip Roth’s novel Portnoy’s Complaint (1967). Feminist re-readings of this popular stereotype offer an interesting insight into its construction and try to explain its viability.
