The article examines a philosophy of studying America practiced for over five centuries. Following the ideas of Fernand Braudel, this work intends to present the evolution of studying (or knowing) America with partly structuralistic and partly functionalistic focus, which leads towards multifaceted interpretations of Amer-ican reality.
El artículo trata de una filosofía del conocer de América practicado durante más de cinco siglos. Siguiendo las ideas de Fernand Braudel, se propone ver la evolución del conocimiento (o el saber) sobre América mediante un enfoque, en parte es-tructuralista, en parte funcionalista, que llevaría a las interpretaciones pluriangulares de América.

Opis:
The return of life-writing genres, biographical writing in particular, to the heart of present-day literary practices remains one of the most interesting phenomena in contemporary literature written in English. The article discusses a number of narratives (written by biographers, literary critics and novelists) which have emerged in the last decades and which attempt to present and critically analyse the life of Henry James, the master of American fiction at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The author recapitulates on the major trends in contemporary biographical practices which address the life of Henry James – especially the conclusions reached by biographers and critics associated with Marxism, Deconstruction, Feminism and Queer Theory. Moreover, the article investigates the phenomenon of the nearly simultaneous arrival of several biographical novels about Henry James.

The concept of race seems to be, despite the efforts of various political movements of 1960’s still present in the public life and education in the Unites States. Contemporary educational debates in America in most cases tackle this problem through the lenses of a specific research approach which takes the concept of race as granted, when examining social relations in the American society. This approach, generally called Critical Race Theory (CRT) had been established in the late 1980’s, but its theoretical, methodological and political roots go back to the decade of the Vietnam War and the assassination of Martin Luther King or even further. This paper makes an attempt to deliver a closer look at the CRT and to highlight its most important assumptions and forms of political actions undertaken within the common frame of the racial concept. The Boasian tradition in the American way of conceptualization of race is an important factor in this debate. The past and present educational debates in the USA prove the fact that the idea of race is undergoing nowadays an intensive shift from its biological basis towards economic and social differences making the new conflicts even more visible in the American political landscape today.

In different ways, the movies rearticulate the relationship between Italy and the United States. In showing how Italians can beat Americans at sports, how they can indulge in conspicuous consumption and finally how even the United States are not alien to provincialism and backwardness, these movies express a new mood of confidence that was widely felt in Italian society at the time. However, these movies came at a moment when the Italian film industry was on the verge of its decline. Starting from the 1980s, in fact, American movies and distributors would colonize the Italian movie market and depress the Italian movie industry.

The aim of this essay is to present an overview of shifting paradigms in Black Studies. I will critically look back on my own research on African American women writers of the so-called Second American Renaissance in an effort to determine to what extent theory can alter interpretation, and how theoretical position can ‘rewrite’ or ‘transform’ the books we read and analyze. I will show that my engagement with diasporic and postcolonial theories has enabled me a more polemical formulation of contemporary Afro-American women’s prose. I will also analyze how my experience with applying different literary and cultural theories and criticism impacted on my teaching of black American literature and literature in general.

Zakład Ameryki Łacińskiej Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego od kilku lat regularnie organizuje Krakowską Konferencję latynoamerykanistyczną. Inicjatywa ta ma na celu spotkanie specjalistów z zakresu badań nad regionem Ameryki Łacińskiej i Karaibów, prezentację badań oraz forum dyskusji i nawiązania kontaktów. Pierwsze dwie edycje konferencji miały charakter krajowy i ograniczały się do uczestnictwa w nich polskich badaczy-latynoamerykanistów. Od 2013 roku Krakowskie Konferencje Latynoamerykanistyczne wyszły poza granice Polski, otwierając się na uczestników z innych krajów i tym samym poszerzając perspektywę spojrzenia na najnowsze badania poświęcone regionowi. Kontynuując ten trend, w dniach 8-9 kwietnia 2016 roku odbyła się IV Krakowska Konferencja Latynoamerykanistyczna. Jej tematem przewodnim była problematyka związana z migracjami i diasporami współczesnej Ameryki Łacińskiej. Tematyka migracji, jako kluczowy temat tegorocznej konferencji, budziła pewne obawy organizatorów. Jakkolwiek decyzja o jego wyborze zapadła znacznie wcześniej, to jednak konferencja zbiegła się w czasie z kryzysem migracyjnym w Europie i gorącą debatą, jaka toczy się na ten temat. Z jednej strony, konferencja wpisywała się problematykę niezwykle aktualną, z drugiej natomiast, podejmowała temat, który budzi wiele emocji i kontrowersji. Latynoamerykanie nie wpisują się w falę uchodźców, jaka dotarła do Europy, jednak stanowią oni niewątpliwie istotną grupę migrantów, a latynoamerykańska diaspora w Europie i innych regionach świata jest bardzo liczna.

Markha ValentaRadboud University Nijmegen Abandoning America the Better to Save American Studies: A Proposal Abstract: This paper argues that the most fruitful future for American Studies is one that subsumes it to global projects, critical sensibilities, political, intellectual and aesthetic fields greater than itself. Correspondingly, the prime referent of American Studies ought not to be a reified “America” but rather the paradoxes, tensions and contestations between democratic and inhumanely extractive relations that gave birth to and continue to shape the US/Americas, even as their reach and flow far exceed “America.” The US – as icon, social field and political actor – is as much the effect as the source of global forces. The most important of these today are ones that qualify, selectively dissolve, concentrate and reconfigure constitutive elements of the nation-state and political geography. Taking this seriously – as the US follows in the footsteps of other countries that have been producing one chauvinist strongman leader after another – means making American Studies not about either “America” or the US but about the world. One particularly promising avenue entails scholarship engaging and contributing to a radical, globalizing democratic culture that is, in fact, deeply aligned with some of the most important traditions and sensibilities in American Studies itself. What is an Americanist?  The paper argues that this new wave of theory illuminates the confluence of American Studies and critical thought, both involved in a simultaneous movement of deterritorialization that pushes them outside their established boundaries. In particular, this paper argues that not only some of Pratt and Manara’s characters are very liberal, creative reinventions of Hawthorne’s figures-they might be seen as “spin-offs” of Hawthorne’s narrative-but in many ways Indian Summer is also thematically close to The Scarlet Letter.

Since its inception, International American Studies (IAS) had to define itself against the larger backdrop of global or world studies. However, as Paul Giles notes in his contribution to this special issue of RIAS marking the 10th anniversary of the journal and devoted to “International American Studies and the Question of World literature,” “World Literature in its current institutional manifestation is a much more recent phenomenon” than IAS, and may have “accumulated academic prestige more rapidly and securely than International American Studies has so far managed.”  Whatever their different temporal and institutional trajectories, however, both IAS and World literature may be seen as efforts to come to terms with the momentous historical, political, social, and technological changes of the past few decades. Put simply, both can be considered attempts to fashion new epistemological tools better suited to making sense of a globalized world, so that, no matter how (relatively?) different their objects of study might be, a set of theoretical concerns would appear to be shared by both fields. Both students of IAS and World Literature, for example, need to venture beyond the traditional categories of the nation and of national cultures, by coming to terms with the social, historical, and linguistic complexities that such a move entails. Both have to do so in a way that “opens” one’s field and yet preserves its raison d’être, especially at a time when the humanities are under attack and the defense of academic positions and credentials-all calls for “interdisciplinarity” notwithstanding-is of paramount importance. Both need to rethink the parameters of their disciplinary specializations, that is, without pulling the institutional rugs from under their feet-a precarious balancing act which, in the age of the corporate university, with its rage for classifying, evaluating, and ranking, is far from easy to perform.

The article juxtaposes representations of mothers and daughters in selected African American novels that feature near-white female protagonists: W. W. Brown’s Clotel, Or the President’s Daughter (1853), Frances E. W. Harper’s Iola Leroy (1892), Charles Chesnutt’s The House behind the Cedars (1900), and Pauline Hopkins’s Hagar’s Daughter (1902). It explores the matrilineal opposition through a formalist close analysis of the melodramatic poetics of the texts and examines the political signifi cance of such aesthetic choices. The novels expose the American history of interracial relations through their foregrounding of the mulatta protagonists and numerous scenes of anagnorisis of their multiracial identities. Simultaneously, their “erotics of politics” rewards the choice of a black spouse and thus celebrates the emergence of the self-determined black community.
