Opis:
The beginnings of Soba, the capital of the medieval Kingdom of Alwa, are usually dated to the 5th–6th centuries AD. Despite the consensus on the date, the question of what the city looked like during the initial period of its existence is still under discussion. The data on the early settlement at Soba is fragmentary. The results of recent excavations in the 2019–2020 season, including new radiocarbon datings, have provided additional information. Remains of early medieval brick architecture in Area CW and an early dating of Mound OS have been cross-referenced with archival data, leading the authors to hypothesize about the beginnings of Soba as a polycentric city with several areas featuring permanent buildings (of stone and/or brick) and vast areas dominated by frequently changing wooden architecture.

Opis:
This article proposes speculative reconstructions of the genealogies of the royal families of the medieval Nubian kingdom of Dotawo. It synthesizes the literary, documentary and epigraphic evidence for Nubian kings and their families in the 1100s–1300s. The result is a series of family trees intended to produce a testable model. That model proposes that despite the apparent conflict between various contenders for the throne dynastic succession was the standard operating principle in Dotawo throughout the late medieval period; that peaceful stability was normative; and that a single family dynasty may have ruled Dotawo through the entire span of these several centuries.

Opis:
The kingdom of Alwa, located in what is now Sudan, was a Nubian state on the southern outskirts of medieval Christendom. Despite its existence for almost a millennium, virtually nothing is known about its history, culture and administration. Focusing on the Gezira between the White and Blue Nile and the eastern shores of the latter, this article considers archaeology, medieval geographers and especially accounts from the 18th through the early 20th centuries to discuss towns and churches, Christianity and the impact of Alwa’s legendary capital Soba on the memory of the Sudanese people. The author hopes to provide a useful introduction, inspiring further research on this enigmatic kingdom.

Opis:
The article considers the theme stated in the title in three separate sections focusing on three regions that were ecclesiastically subordinate to the patriarchate of Alexandria, that is Egypt, Libya Inferior and Pentapolis, and Nubia and Ethiopia. Bishops in the first area, strictly controlled by the patriarch, travelled to Alexandria first to be ordained and later to attend synods called by the patriarch and to conduct routine business, for example requesting financial assistance, waiting for a dispute between hierarchs to be solved, or in the case of breaking the discipline by the bishops or members of the clergy subordinate to them. Churches of Nubia and Ethiopia, located farther afar, sought the patriarch’s attention almost exclusively in order to ordain bishops of the political centres of their states. The patriarch’s ability to directly interfere with the internal matters of these distant Churches was very limited. For each of the examined regions, the author seeks to establish the approximate time required to travel to Alexandria. This section of the paper is based on antique and early medieval sources as well as post-medieval and nineteenth-century travel records.
