Opis:
A global defensive (respectively, offensive) alliance in a graph G = (V,E) is a set of vertices S ⊆ V with the properties that every vertex in V-S has at least one neighbor in S, and for each vertex v in S (respectively, in V-S) at least half the vertices from the closed neighborhood of v are in S. These alliances are called strong if a strict majority of vertices from the closed neighborhood of v must be in S. For each kind of alliance, the associated parameter is the minimum cardinality of such an alliance. We determine relationships among these four parameters and the vertex independence number for trees.

In this paper we obtain several tight bounds on different types of alliance numbers of a graph, namely (global) defensive alliance number, global offensive alliance number and global dual alliance number. In particular, we investigate the relationship between the alliance numbers of a graph and its algebraic connectivity, its spectral radius, and its Laplacian spectral radius.

For a graph G = (V,E), a set S ⊆ V is a dominating set if every vertex in V - S has at least a neighbor in S. A dominating set S is a global offensive (respectively, defensive) alliance if for each vertex in V - S (respectively, in S) at least half the vertices from the closed neighborhood of v are in S. The domination number γ (G) is the minimum cardinality of a dominating set of G, and the global offensive alliance number γo(G) (respectively, global defensive alliance number γa(G)) is the minimum cardinality of a global offensive alliance (respectively, global deffensive alliance) of G. We show that if T is a tree of order n, then γo(T) ≤ 2γ (T) - 1 and if n ≥ 3, then γo(T) ≤ 3/2?a(T) ? 1. Moreover, all extremal trees attaining the first bound are characterized.

Partner selection is one of the most discussed issues in strategic alliances literature. However, the majority of research has typically focused on generic partner characteristics and presented conceptual models for alliance partner selection, addressing clan image but only limited pieces of the partner selection puzzle. Rooted in the resource-based view, this paper suggests that partner selection is contingent upon the intended time frame of strategic alliances and presents a new and intensive conceptual framework that examines the appropriate partner capability for strategic alliances, in the case of short/medium-term alliances and long-term ones. Based on empirical evidences from 736 alliances in the CEE region, the findings stress the differences between varied partner capabilities in short/medium-term and long-term alliances. Accordingly, the significance of technological capability increases with the number of year’s alliances endured. Moreover, the importance of market capability decreases significantly when alliances last for a longer time frame.

We consider finite graphs G with vertex set V(G). For a subset S ⊆ V(G), we define by G[S] the subgraph induced by S. By n(G) = |V(G) | and δ(G) we denote the order and the minimum degree of G, respectively. Let k be a positive integer. A subset S ⊆ V(G) is a connected global offensive k-alliance of the connected graph G, if G[S] is connected and |N(v) ∩ S | ≥ |N(v) -S | + k for every vertex v ∈ V(G) -S, where N(v) is the neighborhood of v. The connected global offensive k-alliance number $γₒ^{k,c}(G)$ is the minimum cardinality of a connected global offensive k-alliance in G.
In this paper we characterize connected graphs G with $γₒ^{k,c}(G) = n(G)$. In the case that δ(G) ≥ k ≥ 2, we also characterize the family of connected graphs G with $γₒ^{k,c}(G) = n(G) - 1$. Furthermore, we present different tight bounds of $γₒ^{k,c}(G)$.

This article aims to contribute to a theoretical understanding and discussion of conflict in weak states. More granular than one at the level of systemic phenomena, this analysis is focused on the actors, and the political structure in weak states. The article aims to improve on efforts to accurately describe these conflicts. After a theoretical introduction, the theorem on powerbroker systems will be applied on the case studies of Afghanistan, Lebanon and Mali. Building on this, the contours of the political system in each case will be highlighted by looking at the very origins of socio-political life. The working hypothesis is that powerbrokers, built on self-governing communities, ally and bandwagon according to Balance of Threat (BoT). This working hypothesis will be tested by examining a derived hypotheses per case study and identifying a) self-rule communities, b) the political-military nexus of powerbrokers within each system, and c) the behaviour of the related BoT alliance. Afghan, Lebanese and Malian powerbrokers all confirm the hypotheses. The powerbrokers originate in a context of self-governing communities trying to maintain their internal autonomy vis-a-vis a more centralised state and world system. During conflict, the communities band together against a perceived external threat, building neo-feudal political-military bodies. Pooling military resources under skilled leadership and privileged access to outside sponsors sparks the birth of a post-conflict politicalmilitary elite. It is beneficial to maintain powerbrokers as they are better suited to distribute resources through patronage at scale. Powerbroker alliances in weak states can be well explained by a theoretical approach based on balance of threat and more research is needed.

The term 'Indo-Pacific', while mingling the Indian and the Pacific Ocean geopolitics in the 21st century, also attempts to integrate India with the Pacific region geopolitically. India has increasingly integrated economically with the Pacific world since the unveiling of her Look East Policy in 1994, rechristened as the Act East Policy in 2014. Growing hostility between the country and China compelled India to turn to the 'contain China' approach in the Pacific region, which is the cradle of Chinese naval prowess. However, India's deficient naval strength with its focus on the Indian Ocean and her land-oriented security priority amid Chinese and Pakistani threats are major handicaps to India's geo-strategic aspirations in the Pacific region vis-à-vis China's rise. Therefore, India, unable to pursue an offensive realist approach to contain China in the Pacific, has opted for a 'balance of threat' approach, forming alliances with the China-wary countries of the Pacific region, albeit only informally, in order to avoid Chinese retribution.

This article uses Michael C. McGee’s concept of the ideograph to reflect Obama’s early foreign policy course regarding transatlantic relations. Specifically, the article draws on the ideograph “alliance” to demonstrate how the president redefined agents, acts, agencies, scenes, and purposes that fall within the rhetoric, thus informing how and why he changed US commitment to NATO. Analyzing Obama’s use of alliance serves to interpret his political choices as well as understand his ability to get the public to support them. By extension, a study of this nature offers a reading of the president’s perspective on US foreign policy and America’s global role.

Opis:
Background: A holistic (biopsychosocial) model, widely accepted in contemporary medicine, provides a taking into account of both the physical, psychological and social aspects of a patient’s needs. Holistic rehabilitation approaches attempt to address both physical, cognitive and emotional disorders and problems. The relationship between the patient and physical therapists can be a key part of physical therapy and can be related to the outcome of physical therapy. Objective: Assessment of the influence of the patient-physical therapist relationship to the outcomes in physical therapy by a synthesizing of the published literature.Method: A rigorous search of four major databases was conducted using specified keywords and explicit inclusion and exclusion criteria.Representative literature was synthesized to indicate the scope and weight of current evidence. Conclusion: The relationship between the patient and physical therapists can have a positive influence on rehabilitation outcomes. More research is needed to determine important factors influencing a patient-physical therapists relationship, the strength of this association and guidances to clinical practice, especially within a multidisciplinary therapeutic team. Moreover there is urgent need to develop reliable instruments to measure these parameters in physical therapy settings. Because of the rapid development of telerehabilitation, the possible opportunities and dangers of a distance relationship should be assessed. The results of further research in this area can change contemporary therapy models and approaches within physical therapy, in particular those within outpatient, longterm and neurological rehabilitation.
Metoda: Przeprowadzono przegląd piśmiennictwa recenzowanych badań indeksowanych w głównych bazach danych używając wyspecyfikowanych słów kluczowych oraz jednoznacznych kryteriów uwzględnienia i pominięcia. Wyniki dalszych badań mogą zmienić obecne modele i podejścia stosowane w fizjoterapii, szczególnie w przypadku ambulatoryjnej i długotrwałej rehabilitacji neurologicznej.

The paper deals with alliances and coalitions that can be formed by agents or entities. It is assumed that alliance agents cooperate and form coalitions for performing the tasks or missions. It is considered that alliance agents are unselfish. That is, they are more interested in achieving the common goal(s) than in getting personal benefits. In the paper, the concept of fuzzy alliance was introduced. A fuzzy alliance is considered as generalization of traditional alliance allowing agents to decide on the capabilities that their agents can and wanted deliver to coalition. Coalitions that can be formed by fuzzy alliance agents were considered. The definition of the “best” coalition was explained. The method of how to find the “best” coalition among all possible coalitions was suggested and verified by computer simulation.

The International System is traversing a challenging stage in its evolution. The United States should carefully consider the risks of an idiosyncratic leadership and closely work with their European partners, securing a world order based on the norms of multilateralism and democracy. Still, the US President Donald Trump unveils an approach based on emotional and synchronous elements. As a matter of consequence, the EU is considering other geopolitical alternatives to accomplish its goals and deliver the best outcome to the people it serves and for global prosperity. The paper investigates the very specifi c psychological factors infl uencing Trumpian political thinking and justifying his corresponding foreign policy decisionmaking processes, in the current transatlantic environment. By contextual examples, the analysis reveals the sensitivities and flaws in applying a subjective, belief-based approach of international (bilateral) relations. We put things into a broader perspective, by analysing the implications of such political behaviour patterns for the international liberal order, in the circumstances of the more and more prominent geopolitical triangle: theEU–China–the US.

The paper is an introduction to the discussion devoted to literary evidence of “unification initiatives” (unions, alliances, international agreements and other unification projects) as witnessed in the history of Europe over many centuries. Artistic writings have long presented the dialogue between union partners, taking place both in public (international or national) as well as private space. Among these phenomena, particularly noteworthy are unification visions, cultural osmosis, evidence of individual participation in unification processes, acts of building the collective awareness, ways of interpreting both shared and alien cultural or religious symbols, literary expressions of the relations between “I” and “You”, strategies used in constructing the linguistic image of the shared world and alien worlds. The paper attempts to systematize specific issues related to these problems and is an introduction to the discussion carried out in the latest issue of „Tematy i Konteksty”.

The problem of ensuring state security in new geopolitical conditions is expressed in the adopted hierarchy of priorities of implementation of the Polish national interest. The exercise of the specified policy priorities means Poland’s obtaining a solid security basis. The Polish Army, the armed forces of the Republic of Poland, has become an element of NATO’s broad security system. The implementation of the policy in this regard by the Polish government has recently been more and more unidimensional. Only cooperation with the USA is at the target of the Polish security policy. Issues related to its costs remain outside its determinants. There is no reflection on being dependent on another egoistic player.

Brak racjonalnej odpowiedzi.
The processes taking place in the turbulent and asymmetrical international security environment are a necessity for cooperation with different backgrounds, aimed at building security space. The ongoing information war on a global scale supports the activities of key players in international relations who, in pursuing their particular political, economic and military objectives, exploit weak states with the consent of their political authorities. To this end, they include political-military and financial-economic alliances, which very often constitute a source of exploitation alongside support. However, the cohesion and solidarity of the members of the alliance and coalition requires Member States to comply with their obligations, including the legal basis for their activities. Violation of this key principle usually  strikes at the foundations of their unity. The implementation of basic functions by the alliance is a necessity to comply with the adopted system for the protection of classified information. Its violation is not only a lack of trust, but also a breach of the security of the alliance’s Member States. This applies in particular to information resources (personal), which must be protected regardless of the passage of time, and it is these resources that determine the possibilities and position of the alliance in the area of responsibility for, among others, its security.

Opis:
The author shows how the Jewish community in Jerusalem is scrupulousabout their own religion and their allegiance to God and His Temple. On theother hand, 2 Macc reveals a Hellenistic orientation by viewing the Templeas that of the city, as is shown by the progression city-place-Temple (cf. 3:1-3)and by reference to the high priest of the city (cf. 3:9).Our section (3:14-22) focuses on the author’s intention to involve theauditorium in the action, as he highlights the tragic emotion experienced. The classification of roles in the description of the population of the cityis interesting. The priests in their formal attire form a distinct group withthe greatest attention (two verses) given to describing the grief of the highpriest. The males participate in the public supplication (3:18), while themarried women express their grief with bared breasts and sackcloth aroundtheir waists, symbolising their role as child-bearers.The unified narrative conforms to the general pattern of a deity’s defenceof his temple: attackers approach, the defenders ask the deity for help and thedeity responds. There are many examples of this type of narrative such asthe defence of Delphi by Apollo against marauding Persians in 480 B.C.E.,the story told by Herodotus (8:35-39).

Opis:
Let k ≥ 1 be an integer. A set S of vertices of a graph G = (V (G), E(G)) is called a global offensive k-alliance if |N(v) ∩ S| ≥ |N(v) - S| + k for every v ∈ V (G) - S, where N(v) is the neighborhood of v. The subset S is a k-dominating set of G if every vertex in V (G) - S has at least k neighbors in S. The global offensive k-alliance number [formula] is the minimum cardinality of a global offensive k-alliance in G and the k-domination number ϒ k(G) is the minimum cardinality of a k-dominating set of G. For every integer k ≥ 1 every graph G satisfies [formula]. In this paper we provide for k ≥ 2 a characterization of trees T with equal [formula] and ϒ k(T).

Opis:
The thesis of the title concerns the artificial and fleeting character of the alliance of the developing countries of BRIC. The author presents a range of evidence that the actual cooperation of the five is sparse and transitory, and that the differences and conflicting interests of these countries will result in the breaking of the coalition in the coming years.

Let G = (V(G),E(G)) be a graph, and let k ≥ 1 be an integer. A set S ⊆ V(G) is called a global offensive k-alliance if |N(v)∩S| ≥ |N(v)-S|+k for every v ∈ V(G)-S, where N(v) is the neighborhood of v. The global offensive k-alliance number $γₒ^k(G)$ is the minimum cardinality of a global offensive k-alliance in G. We present different bounds on $γₒ^k(G)$ in terms of order, maximum degree, independence number, chromatic number and minimum degree.

Opis:
Poland was forming allied relations in the twenties and thirties of the twentieth century due to the state’s weakness, mainly in military and economic terms. The Polish state’s situation regarding political and military security guarantees on the part of other subjects of the international community was neither stable nor advantageous during that period. That was influenced, among others, by the following phenomena: changes in the international arena that were unfavorable for the Second Republic of Poland, diplomatic activities of Germany and the USSR aimed at revising the borders of the Polish state, political and military rapprochement between the USSR and Germany in the area of economic and military cooperation, conciliatory and ineffective international policy of the Western powers (mainly the French Republic) towards Germany in the late 1920s, impermanence and low effectiveness of bilateral agreements and declarations concluded by Poland with its eastern neighbor – the Soviet Union and its western neighbor – Germany, ineffectiveness of the political-military alliances concluded by Poland with France, Romania, and the United Kingdom, and significant disproportions between Polish and German and Soviet industrial and military potential, combined with the inability of the western powers to fulfil their allied obligations in practical terms.
W latach dwudziestych i trzydziestych XX wieku Polska zawierała związki sojusznicze z powodu słabości państwa, przede wszystkim w wymiarze militarnym i ekonomicznym.

Opis:
Purpose: The main purpose of this study was to compare the phenomenon of interfrm cooperation strategy in both hyper-growth, and stable-growth knowledge and technology–intensive frms, in a country characterized by a high level of generalized trust: Sweden. Methodology: Qualitative methods were incorporated: direct semistructured interviews with top managers in 13 ICT frms (8 hyper-growth and 5 stable-growth), analyzis of reports, corporate websites and press releases. Furthermore, interviews in 3 expert frms in the industry were conducted, facilitating interfrm cooperation. Conclusions: There were signifcant differences in interfrm cooperation strategy in two distinguished groups of the frms: hyper-growth, and stable-growth. Managers’ individual approaches to uncertainty, strategy and cooperation might be more important than institutional settings. The ICT frms operate in a constantly changing global environment and local context seems to have only a minor impact on the rules of the game in the industry. Research limitations: This study was a qualitative explorative approach as an introduction to further empirical research. Originality: The study presents an interfrm cooperation phenomenon incorporating different perspectives and settings. It contributes to alliance portfolio literature (forming and managing of alliance portfolio in a different context/country/industry), and enhances understanding of frm strategies characterized by different growth rates.
