    This article proposes an analysis of the Soviet people’ image in Second-hand Time by Svetlana Alexievich. It discusses the category of the “close Other” (Czapliński). Particular attention is paid to the role of the aesthetics of spontaneity (Czermińska). The techniques of narrative polyphony (Bachtin) were also described. The article proposes the hypothesis, that the motivation of this model of narrative is strenghtening the characters’ point of view. Simultaneously the reporter appears as involved in the process of transformation of witnesses’ consciousness. Reportage thus seems to be a genre which is not only reproducing the story, but also has the performative power. One of its aspects is the psychotherapeutic function of the textual and metatextual communication. The image of the Other in the text thus appears as an identity in the process, which can be seen as a an antiorientalistic strategy of the narrator.

    This article is an attempt at recreating the portrait of a “Chernobyl Man” created by Svetlana Alexievich in Chernobyl Prayer. The “Chernobyl Man” is a certain psychological type whose psychological portrait is drawn based on their entanglement in the current social and political realities. On the one hand, the “Chernobyl Man” is a typical representative of a homo sovieticus – an individual displaying boundless devotion to the state. On the other hand, this type of man through their relationship with the world is living proof of the spiritual disintegration of the Soviet empire.

    Czarnobylska modlitwa. Kronika przyszłości Swietłany Aleksijewicz jest zbiorem narracji powstałych po wybuchu elektrowni jądrowej w Czarnobylu. Publikacja przedstawia posttraumatyczną rzeczywistość jako przestrzeń „niewyrażalną”, niedającą się wytłumaczyć lub opisać. Brak możliwości reprezentacji doświadczenia traumatycznego nie oznacza jednak popadnięcia w milczenie, lecz powoduje uruchamianie wyobraźni. Wywiady z ofiarami katastrofy przeprowadzone przez autorkę potwierdzają istnienie swoistego imaginarium zbiorowego, w którym snucie fantazji uruchamia m.in. metafizyczny dyskurs apokaliptyczny, a także powoduje estetyzację katastrofy lub ironizowanie jej. Powstanie tak różnych języków odzwierciedla możliwe sposoby odbierania posttraumatycznej rzeczywistości, tworzenie dyskursu postkatastroficznego. Katastrofa, tworząc zagrożenie, jednocześnie przyciąga, stanowi odrealniony obiekt pożądania, jest przerażająca i zarazem śmieszna.
    Svetlana Alexievich’s Chernobyl Prayer: A Chronicle of the Future is a collection of narratives created after the catastrophe at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The paper presents the posttraumatic reality as an inexpressible experience that cannot be explained or described. However, the inability to represent traumatic experience does not mean falling into silence. Instead, it rouses the imagination. Interviews with victims of the catastrophe carried out by the author confirm the existence of a specific, collective “imaginarium” of the conceptual realm, where the process of fantasizing actuates discourse, both metaphysical-apocalyptic and other, and also evokes the aestheticization of the disaster, as well as irony. The emergence of different languages reflects the possible ways of perceiving posttraumatic reality and creating postcatastrophic discourse. The catastrophe, which creates a threat – and simultaneously, an attraction, an unreal object of desire – is terrifying and at the same time ridiculous.

    The article analyzes the process of incorporation of the witnesses’ verbal testimonies into the public sphere, of which polyphonic reportage is a part. This genre has become known mainly thanks to Svetlana Alexievich, whose works are based entirely on recorded conversations and interviews. Listening to the witnesses enables the reporter facing the dominant discourse of the past to reach out to others, the process of discovering and textualizing of which can be described with reference to the folk tradition of collective singing.
    Artykuł analizuje proces włączenia ustnych relacji świadków do sfery publicznej, jaką jest reportaż polifoniczny. Gatunek ten jest znany przeważnie dzięki Swietłanie Aleksijewicz, której publikacje w całości opierają się na zarejestrowanych rozmowach i wywiadach. Wysłuchanie świadków umożliwia reporterce dotarcie do innych wobec dyskursu dominującego wersji przeszłości, wydobywanie i utekstowienie których można opisać odwołując się do ludowej tradycji wspólnego śpiewu.

    Svetlana Alexievich, a Belarusian writer and journalist, an author of many books and theatrical plays, Nobel Laureate in Literature, deals in her writings with subjects connected with events in the USSR as well as the place and role of “a small human being” in the history of these events. Alexievich’s books discuss the themes of World War II, the war in Afghanistan, the Chernobyl disaster and so on. The author selects difficult themes in the centre of which is found the human being. In a lifethreatening situation the behaviour of man is, in Alexievich’s opinion, most true. The thematic oppositions: life-death, joy-sadness, Afghanistanmotherland, war-peace, truth-untruth enable the writer to show the changes that are taking place in the life and psyche of a person. The book Boys in Zinc is a presentation of talks with Russian soldiers who came back from the war in Afghanistan and the mothers of the soldiers who died there. The writer depicts the Afghan War as an amoral event both for the USSR and the Afghan nation. The brutal experiences in the front line, the undermined mental and physical health make up the core of the book. The naturalistic depiction of truth, fear of death, inner struggles of the heroes, the soldiers’ and their mothers’ dreams of meeting each other, all this is portrayed by Alexievich in a convincing and unique way in Boys in Zinc.

    Celem artykułu jest interpretacja prozy Swietłany Aleksijewicz ukierunkowana przede wszystkim na ogląd postaci kobiecych, dokonywany między innymi przez pryzmat mitu matki, leżącego u podstaw kultury rosyjskiej. Na podstawie zbiorów reportaży Wojna nie ma w sobie nic z kobiety, Czarnobylska modlitwa. Kronika przyszłości oraz Czasy second-hand. Koniec czerwonego człowieka zwrócono uwagę na motywację przedstawianych przez autorkę postaw i wizerunków bohaterek wspomnianych utworów. Historie współczesnych kobiet, utrwalone przez laureatkę Nagrody Nobla, z jednej strony stanowią materiał egzemplifikujący stereotypowe widzenie kobiety radzieckiej w społeczeństwie, z drugiej zaś służą wykryciu cech spajających te obrazy, nierzadko zakorzenionych w mitologii słowiańskiej i chrześcijaństwie. Tekst prezentuje również analizę poetyki pisarstwa Aleksijewicz, stanowi próbę wskazania na dokumentacyjny charakter tej prozy jako nośnika mitu.
    The aim of the article is the interpretation of Svetlana Alexievich’s prose focused, first of all, on women’s characters. They are discussed, among other things, from the point of view of the feminine myth which constitutes the basis of the Russian culture. The examination of the collections of reportages War does not have a woman’s face, Chernobyl prayer and Second-hand time. The last of the Soviets allowed us to turn the attention to the motivation and images of female characters of the aforementioned texts. On the one hand, the stories of contemporary women, recorded by the Nobel prize winner, confirm the stereotypical perception of Soviet women in the society, on the other, however, they help us to discover the features which are common for those images and very often enrooted in Slavic mythology and Christianity. The text also gives insight into the poetics of Alexievich’s works and constitutes an attempt at looking at the documentary character of her prose through the problem of the myth.

    The article analyses the reportage of John Hersey, Svetlana Alexievich and Katarzyna Boni devoted to the victims of the atomic bomb explosion in Hiroshima, as well as the nuclear reactor accidents in Chernobyl and Fukushima. Presenting the consequences of disasters, not only in material, but above all in human terms, the author makes an attempt to find out how societies, including the heroes of reportage, process the trauma of contamination through culture, and what is the role in this process of the fictionalized type of this genre of the non-fiction prose. To answer the question whether the contemporary reportage can serve as a culture-creating factor, the author analyses the linguistic and stylistic features, which carry cultural meanings, as well as the composition of reportage texts revealing the way the authors build the world presented of their authentic stories.

    Анализ литературных свидетельств о Великой Отечественной войне теснейшим образом связан с рассмотрением категории пространства. Военный пейзаж репрезентирует не только модель географического пространства, но и обладает символическим статусом, выступая как место памяти. Целью данной статьи является исследование мемориальных пейзажей, представленных в двух первых книгах лаурета Нобелевской премии Светланы Алексиевич. В произведениях белорусской писательницы пространство, война и память выступают в различных конфигурациях, образуя сложную и многоуровневую систему, в которой можно выделить ряд повторяющихся мотивов и образов. Особенности функционирования женской и детской памяти определяют способы конструирования пространства и идентичности человека, пребывающего в нем. В статье анализируются разные типы пространств: свое и чужое, пространство инициации, пространства-табу, акустическое пространство, гетеротопии и др., которые составляют мир Великой Отечественной войны, увиденный глазами героев Алексиевич.    
    The analysis of literature evidences of the Great Patriotic War is closely connected with the consideration of the category of space. The war scenery represents not only the model of geographical space but has the symbolic status acting as the place of memory. The aim of the present article is the research of memory sceneries presented in the first two books of the Nobel prize winner Svetlana Alexievich. In the works of Belarusian writer the space, war and memory act in different configurations, creating complicated and multi-level system where the number of repeating motives and images can be found. The peculiarities of women and children memory functioning determine the ways of constructing space and identity of a person in it.  The article analyzes various types of the space: the own and the others one, the space of initiation, the taboo spaces, acoustic space, heterotopias, etc. composing the world of the Great Patriotic war seen by the eyes of Alexievich characters.
    W analizie świadectw literackich okresu wielkiej wojny ojczyźnianej istotną rolę odgrywa kategoria przestrzeni. Pejzaż militarny reprezentuje nie tylko model przestrzeni geograficznej, ale posiada również status symboliczny występując jako miejsce pamięci. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zbadanie krajobrazów pamięci przedstawionych w dwóch pierwszych książkach Swietłany Aleksijewicz. W utworach białoruskiej pisarki przestrzeń, wojna i pamięć występują w różnych konfiguracjach tworząc złożony i wielopoziomowy system, w którym można wyodrębnić szereg powtarzających się obrazów i motywów. Specyfika funkcjonowania dziecięcej i kobiecej pamięci determinuje sposoby kreowania przestrzeni oraz związanej z nią tożsamości jednostki. W artykule zostały przeanalizowane różne typy przestrzeni: swoja i obca, przestrzeń inicjacji i przestrzenie zakazane, przestrzeń akustyczna, heterotopie i in., z których składa się świat wielkiej wojny ojczyźnianej oglądany oczami bohaterów Aleksijewicz.

    Artykuł stanowi propozycję analizy reportażu Swietłany Aleksijewicz Ostatni świadkowie. Utwory solowe na głos dziecięcy jako zapisu historii II wojny światowej z perspektywy dziecka. Udzielenie głosu osobom, których dzieciństwo przypadło na czas wojny i okupacji, jest krokiem do odkrywania wojennych doświadczeń dzieci oraz gestem przeciwko ideologizacji i upolitycznieniu ich przeżyć. Wspomnienia bohaterów reportażu pozwalają odtworzyć dziecięcy punkt widzenia opisywanych wydarzeń, zwykle pomijany w oficjalnym dyskursie historycznym kształtowanym w ZSRR.
    The article offers an analysis of Svetlana Alexievich’s Last Witnesses: An Oral History of the Children of World War II as a history of war from a child’s perspective. Giving the voice to those whose childhood fell on wartime and occupation is a step towards discovering children’s wartime experience as well as a gesture against its ideologisation and politicisation. The protagonists’ memories assembled in the reportage allow us to recreate the children’s point of view about the aforementioned events, which usually remains omitted from the official historical discourse shaped in the USSR.

    Celem pracy jest analiza twórczości filmowej rosyjskiego reżysera i scenarzysty Kantemira Bałagowa. Na podstawie dwóch pełnometrażowych produkcji – Bliskości (2017) oraz Wysokiej dziewczyny (2019) zwrócono uwagę na formalny aspekt wymienionych filmów, rolę feminizacji narracji historycznej, a także złożoną sieć inspiracji (kinowe klasyki i rosyjska literatura). Istotnym dla twórczości Bałagowa jest kontekst społeczno-polityczny Rosji, który służy omawianemu twórcy jako narzędzie rewizji narodowych mitów. Uzupełnieniem rozległego portretu reżysera jest charakterystyka twórczości Aleksandra Sokurowa, wprowadzająca istotny dla badań aspekt prawosławnego ikonopisarstwa. Autorka wskazuje, że kluczy interpretacyjnych dla twórczości Sokurowa i Bałagowa należy poszukać właśnie w symbolice prawosławnych ikon. Ambicją niniejszej pracy jest poszerzenie aktualnego stanu badań nad filmografią Kantemira Bałagowa, który obecnie ogranicza się do premierowych recenzji oraz festiwalowych wywiadów.
    The aim of the work is to analyse the artistic legacy of the Russian director and screenwriter Kantemir Balagov. Attention was drawn to the formal aspect, the role of feminisation of historical narration, and the complex network of inspirations (cinema classics and Russian literature) on the basis of two full-length productions – Closeness (2017) and Beanpole (2019). The social and political context of Russia is important for the Balagov’s work, which serves the artist in question as a tool for revising national myths. The extensive portrait of the director is complemented by the characteristics of Alexander Sokurov's work, which introduces an aspect of Orthodox iconocratic writing that is important for research. The author of this work indicates that the interpretation keys for Sokurov's and Balagov's films should be sought directly in the symbolism of Orthodox icons. This work therefore aspires to expand the present state of research on Kantemir Balagov's filmography, which is currently limited to premiere reviews and festival interviews.
