    The division of human life into ages is not only a sociological issue but also includes a philosophical, moral and religious reflection. The relationship between human life and the course of the year punctuated by the seasons and months has not remained without influence on the very notion of the ages of life. The question that arises is whether we can harmonize the unpredictable flow of human life with the calendar. The confrontation of two medieval works which develop this parallel: the treatise by Philippe de Novare Les Quatre âges de l’homme, and the anonymous poem Les Douze mois figurez, should provide an answer to this question.

    L’articolo mira a descrivere il mito di Prometeo visto come la fonte e il risultato di una sfida continua che la gente è stata costretta a far fronte con i secoli. Basandosi sull’antica tradizione e sulle varie versioni e interpretazioni della mitica storia del Titano, l’autore trae conclusione che la figura di Prometeo possa essere percepita come stimolo, in modo positivo e negativo, della storia del genere umano e che tale immagine di Prometeo è sopravvissuta ed è ancora presente nella cultura contemporanea e viene utilizzata e riutilizzata per sottolineare momenti sempre significativi del cambiamento della civiltà.
    The article aims to describe the myth of Prometheus seen as the source and result of a continuous challenge that people have been forced to cope with through centuries. Basing on the ancient tradition and various versions and interpretations of the mythical story of the Titan the author draws conclusion that the figure of Prometheus may be perceived as the stimulus, in positive as well as negative way, of the history of human kind and that such an image of Prometheus survived and is still present in contemporary culture and is used and reused to underline always significant moments of civilization change.
    Artykuł ma na celu ukazanie, że mit o Prometeuszu może być uznany za źródło i efekt nieustających wyzwań świata, którym człowiek przez wieki musiał stawić czoła. Opierając się na tradycji starożytnej i różnych wersjach i interpretacjach mitu o tytanie autorka dowodzi, że postać Prometeusza może być postrzegana jako pewnego rodzaju bodziec, zarówno pozytywny, jak i negatywny, który wpływał na historię ludzkości oraz że tego typu wizja Prometeusza przetrwała i jest nadal obecna w kulturze współczesnej i jest ciągle wykorzystywana w celu podkreślenia najbardziej znaczących momentów cywilizacyjnych przemian.

    The patristic writers variously enumerated the ages of human life. Some counted ten, some seven, six, five or four. They took number symbolism or the opinions of ancient authors as their starting point, but in their formulation the ages of human life concern not just the physical, intellectual or moral development of man but, often, also his spiritual development. They defined stages in the development of faith or love that can be described in terms analogous to those used for defining man’s age. Moreover, the patristic authors did not usually conclude their enumeration with old age. Human life passes ultimately into the age of rest (the seventh age) or into eternity (the eighth age), which has no end. Irenaeus of Lyon used the concept of the ages of life in proving that Jesus lived about fifty years. There were, in his opinion, theological arguments for such a mature age. Christ became one of us in order to accomplish the redemption and He therefore had to know all the ages of normal human life: not just birth, childhood and youth, but also maturity and old age. But the chronological and exegetical arguments Irenaeus gives are rather stretched. The most profound description of the ages of man was given by Augustine. He makes an original parallel with the seven days of creation and the seven ages of the history of the chosen people.

    Przedmiotem rozważań niniejszego artykułu jest dające się obecnie zaobserwować w Niemczech niezwykle żywe zainteresowanie wiekami średnimi. Fenomen  ten — określany również mianem renesansu średniowiecza bądź boomu na średniowiecze — znajduje szczególnie mocny wyraz w różnych dziedzinach współczesnej kultury popularnej. Dla wykazania postawionej na wstępie tezy autorka ogranicza się do kilku z nich: wystaw, rekonstrukcji oraz imitacji średniowiecznych twierdz i osad, gier komputerowych i społecznościowych, a także średniowiecznych jarmarków oraz turniejów rycerskich. Zaprezentowany przegląd minionych, jak również aktualnych wydarzeń kulturalnych w każdym z wyżej wymienionych obszarów niemieckiej popkultury potwierdza fakt o rosnącej popularności średniowiecza, prowokując jednocześnie pytanie o jej przyczynę. Z analizy reprezentatywnych opinii historyków, publicystów oraz samych fanów średniowiecza wyłania sie jednoznaczna odpowiedź: człowiek XXI wieku odczuwa tęsknotę za światem kontrastującym z rozpędzonym molochem współczesności. Taką właśnie ostoją i bezpiecznym miejscem schronienia staje się dla niego oparta na silnych fundamentach oraz pewnych wartościach rzeczywistość średniowiecza.
    This article discusses an observable revival of the interest in the Middle Ages in Germany. This phenomenon—sometimes called medieval renaissance—manifests itself particularly in various areas of popular culture. To prove the thesis posed, the author analyses a handful of these areas, that is: exhibitions, historical reconstructions and imitations of medieval fortresses and settlements, social and computer games as well as reconstructed medieval fairs and chivalry contests. The article presents a survey of the past and present cultural events serving as evidence in favour of the main thesis. At the same time, the author asks about the reasons for this increased interest in the Middle Ages. Representative opinions of historians and other specialists, as well as fans of the Middle Ages seem to suggest one clear answer: the 21st-century man yearns for an alternative reality, dissimilar to the fast and noisy contemporaneity. The Middle Ages offer a shelter based on the strong foundations of the fixed medieval reality and the stable system of values.
