Evolutionary aesthetics attempts to explain the human ability to perceive objects, conspecif ics and the surrounding environment in an a es thetic manner - i.e. in an emotional and evaluative way resulting in a positive or negative appraisal - by referring to the evolutionary history of our functional, cognitive make-up. Research has mostly focussed on aesthetic considerat ions made during landscape assessment and on the role of aesthetic elements during mate choice. Criticism has been expressed repeatedly as to the naturalistic, presumed to be reductionist methods and outlook of an evolutionary approach to aesthetics. This paper briefly reviews the outline of evolutionary aesthetics research and discusses three such critiques - functionality in beauty judgement, reductionism, and the recognition of cultural and interindividual differences. It argues that philosophical aesthetics is not in danger of being unjustly reduced to a neurobiological explanation of aesthetic judgement and experience, and that evolutionary and traditional humanities approaches can be complementary in understanding our sense of beauty.

The main claim of the article is that everyday aesthetics conceived as a philosophical analysis of everyday objects and situations offers a theoretical perspective that may be applied to the aesthetics of public space. Analysed in aesthetic terms, the public space may be thought to be a space that offers an aesthetic experience to the widest possible public. I contend that the aesthetic quality of public space should be a quality that favours positive experiences of the everyday, banal practices taking place in it. Accordingly, designing public space should consist in making it “everyday experience-friendly.” My argument will be illustrated by the example of a site-specific installation, the Oxygenator, created in Warsaw by Joanna Rajkowska, whose intention was to offer people an ordinary place where they could meet in a “healthy atmosphere.”

The article presents the main assumptions, traditions and problems, which make up the evolutionary perspective in studies of human aesthetic taste. Article begins by describing the main assumptions of evolutionary aesthetics and presenting the aesthetic theory of Ellen Dissanayake, which is regarded as the most general approach to this problem. Then the article discusses the natural evolutionary adaptations, distinguished by evolutionary scientists. Evolutionary theory assumes that as a result of development of the human makeup in the course of evolution have developed some universal aesthetic predispositions (e.g. a penchant for of the representations of certain animals or preferring images of a day over images of a night). The final part of the article discusses some difficulties, which evolutionary aesthetics has to face. The objective of this article is to draw attention to social scientists on this research perspective, as in the author’s opinion it can enrich the classical studies based on the paradigm derived from the works of Pierre Bourdieu.

Artykuł ma na celu przedstawienie problematyki związanej z relacją między naturą a sztuką, w kontekście estetycznego doświadczenia codzienności. Za przedmiot analizy obrany zostaje, w szczególności, przypadek uwikłania kategorii artystycznych w potoczne doświadczenie natury – patrzenie na świat oraz rozumienie przez pryzmat sztuki. W pierwszej części tekstu zrekonstruowana zostaje historia filozoficznego toposu „świata jako dzieła sztuki:” od starożytności do nowożytnych propozycji estetycznych. Druga część poświęcona zostaje przywołaniu założeń dwóch najdynamiczniej rozwijających się subdyscyplin współczesnej estetyki filozoficznej: estetyki codzienności oraz estetyki środowiskowej. Analiza skierowana zostanie w kierunku tego, jakie konsekwencje niosą za sobą owe założenia w kwestii zapośredniczenia doświadczenia w schematach związanych ze sztuką (stanowiska sztukocentryczne oraz anty-sztukocentryczne). W ostatniej części artykułu zestawione zostają orientacje estetyczne wynikające z dwóch różnych podejść do tego rodzaju doświadczenia: afirmatywne stanowisko Thomas’a Leddy'ego oraz krytyczne Arnolda Berleanta.
The main aim of this paper is to present issues related to the relationship between nature and art, in the context of the aesthetic experience of everyday life. The subject of the analysis is, in particular, the case of entanglement of artistic categories into the common experience of nature - looking at the world and understanding through the prism of art. In the first part, the history of the philosophical topos of „the world as a work of art” is reconstructed: from antiquity to the modern aesthetic proposals. The second part recalls the assumptions of the two most dynamically developing subdisciplines of the contemporary philosophical aesthetics: everyday aesthetics and environmental aesthetics. Here, the analysis is directed towards the consequences of these assumptions regarding the mediation of experience in art related schemes (art-centered and non art-centered positions). In the last part of the paper are summarized the aesthetic orientations resulting from two different approaches to this type of experience: the affirmative position of Thomas Leddy and the critical one of Arnold Berleant.

This paper addresses the little studied area of Slovak music and its influence from ‘above‘: the aesthetic theory (dogmatic aesthetics) created out of the political demands placed on art in the 1950s and 60s. In this relatively short ‘Socialist building‘ period, music as both an adornment of the regime and an ideological tool was promoted in accordance with Lenin’s reflection theory and Zhdanov’s normative aesthetics using rules, prohibitions and dogma. Fortunately, however, the mission to build and entrench socialism was never fulfilled.

An attempt to ‘disenchant’ Leon Chwistek’s theory of the multiplicity of realities: the historical context: The paper is a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the publication of Leon Chwistek’s The plurality of realities. His theory was one among other theories aiming at presenting a uniform image of reality. Various theories of the multiplicity of realities constructed at the same time were a response to the problem in science that appeared at the turn of the 20th century. The author reevaluates Chwistek’s thought from a new research perspective, one which has not been widely discussed to date. In this approach Chwistek turns out to be not only a critical rationalist but also a critical pluralist. By presenting the historical context, the accusation of the bizarreness of Leon Chwistek’s theory of the multiplicity of realities is overturned. Contrary to other conceptions, Chwistek’s theory does not present itself as isolated and eccentric but as a work belonging to the mainstream of philosophical research of the epoch.

In the second part, the article addresses the beauty and aesthetics in mathematical thinking and indicates profound skepticism in their validity. The authors of the principal concepts that combine art with participatory issues use the term "aesthetics" to refer to their theories. The aim of the article is to examine the aspects in which these authors refer to the traditional issues of aesthetics and how they modify them. The discussion focuses on three concepts. In Nicolas Bourriaud's relational aesthetics, the notion of "form", modified in such a way as to include human relations appearing in connection with artistic situations, plays an important role. This way viewers and their behavior become part of the works of art. In the article this issue is confronted with the theory of the Umberto Eco's concept of "open work". Selected works by Rirkrit Tiravanija, Felix Gonazalez-Torres and Liam Gillick are also discussed as examples of relational art. Grant Kester's dialogical aesthetics is presented as an example of the link between art and participation, in which experience is brought to the foreground and ethical values dominate. Claire Bishop, on the other hand, believes that participatory art makes far-reaching changes in the understanding of aesthetics necessary. Referring to Jacques Rancière's philosophical concept, she argues that the inconclusive nature of aesthetic experience entails the necessity of questioning the way in which the world is organized. Therefore, the “sensible sharing” that takes place in participatory art is at the same time a political judgment. Moreover, the English author places emphasis not the harmonization of interpersonal relations (presumed in relational aesthetics), but the antagonism that allows us to constantly redefine and make social problems the subject of debates. The article concludes with a question whether relational, dialogical and participatory aesthetics opens up a new field for aesthetic reflection built over artistic phenomena.
Autorzy głównych koncepcji łączących sztukę z problematyką partycypacji używają w odniesieniu do swych teorii nazwy „estetyka”. Celem artykułu jest rozważenie, pod jakimi względami autorzy ci nawiązują do tradycyjnej problematyki estetycznej oraz jakim modyfikacjom ją poddają. Rozważania skoncentrowane są na trzech koncepcjach. W estetyce relacyjnej Nicolasa Bourriauda istotną rolę pełni pojęcie „formy” zmodyfikowane w taki sposób, żeby objąć nim stosunki międzyludzkie pojawiające się w związku z sytuacjami artystycznymi. W ten sposób odbiorcy i ich zachowania stają się częścią dzieł sztuki. W artykule zagadnienie to skonfrontowane jest z teorią „dzieła otwartego” Umberta Eco. Omówione są też, jako przykłady sztuki relacyjnej, wybrane dokonania Rirkrita Tiravanji, Felixa Gonazaleza-Torresa i Liama Gillicka. Estetyka dialogiczna Granta Kestera przedstawiona została jako przykład powiązania sztuki z partycypacją, w którym na pierwszy plan wysuwane jest doświadczenie i dominują wartości etyczne. Natomiast Claire Bishop uważa, że sztuka partycypacyjna prowadzi do konieczności daleko idących zmian w pojmowaniu estetyki. Nawiązując do koncepcji filozoficznej Jacquesa Rancièra twierdzi, że nierozstrzygalność doświadczenia estetycznego pociąga za sobą konieczność zakwestionowania sposobu zorganizowania świata. W związku z tym następujące w sztuce partycypacyjnej „dzielenie postrzegalnego” jest jednocześnie osądem politycznym. Angielska autorka akcentuje też nie harmonizację relacji międzyludzkich (zakładaną w estetyce relacyjnej), a antagonizm pozwalający wciąż na nowo zarysowywać i czynić przedmiotem debat problemy społeczne. Artykuł zamyka pytanie o to, czy estetyka relacyjna, dialogiczna i partycypacyjna otwiera nowe pole dla uprawiania refleksji estetycznej nadbudowywanej nad zjawiskami artystycznymi.

The article is split into two parts. In the first one, author presents main concepts of the Polish theories from the field of aesthetics in the first decade of the twentieth century. For this purpose tries to describe the philosophical assumptions of Michał Sobeski and Jakub Segał, what is the context for the next part of the article. In second part she sets out the Ada’s Silberstein methodological concepts about the aesthetic subject and aesthetic experience, which are, according Silberstein, the key to determine aesthetics as a separate science, independent of psychological processes. Author shows that the philosophical project of Silberstein, based on Husserl’s phenomenology, demonstrates the objectivity of aesthetic research.

The paper analyzes the concept of landscape and its various embodiments in art and nature. On the one hand, one can claim that our understanding of the landscape is constituted by conceptual oppositions like human/non-human, artifactual/natural, culture/nature; on the other, one may notice that landscapes occur in the space “between” these oppositions. Furthering this observation, I lodge an objection to the approach of certain exponents of environmental aesthetics who opt for replacing the notion of landscape by that of environment because I would argue that the former is still informative.

The author analyzes artistic practices associated with the natural world, “from land art to garden art”. In an overview of historical currents in art (since the 1960s), plant art is highlighted as an instrument of critique of land art, and a self-standing current which, among other things, addresses social issues and ecological threats. The author also analyzes specific examples of garden-related artistic practices within the cityscape, considering the criteria under which certain projects can be seen as successful (models to emulate). The text concludes with open-ended questions about the place of plant art in present-day critical discourses, i.e. with respect to landscape architecture, bioart, and technonature.

The article refers to poetry that is regarded from a new media perspective. The author claims that both untraditional and traditional (inscriptive) forms of poetry require new media perspectives. Such an assumption seems essential now, especially since technology is becoming socialized and traditional systems of art have been deconstructed.
