Opis:
Chemical oxidation processes: Fenton process and catalytic ozonation with Mn2+ ions were investigated for effectiveness of formaldehyde (FA) oxidation. The influence of operational variables — O3, H2O2, Mn2+ and Fe2+ concentrations and reaction time were investigated. Researches were carried out on aqueous solution of FA, which concentration was 500 mg/l. Fenton process was investigated at pH 3 and catalytic ozonation at pH 7, 10 and 12. Results revealed that Fenton process was much more effective in FA degradation than catalytic ozonation with Mn2+ as a catalyst. The optimal H2O2/Fe2+ dosage for a Fenton process was 2000/1000 mg/l. COD and FA concentrations were reduced 59,6% and 79,5%. In case of catalytic ozonation with Mn2+ the eff ectiveness was much less and it was the biggest at pH 12 and Mn2+ dosage 25 mg/l where COD and FA concentration were reduced 14% and 38%. Therefore, Fenton process can be promising technology for FA wastewater pretreatment.

Opis:
Dye wastewater is one of typically non-biodegradable industrial effluents. A new process linking Fenton’s oxidation with biological oxidation proposed in this study was investigated to degrade the organic substances from real dye wastewater. During the combination process, the Fenton’s oxidation process can reduce the organic load and enhance biodegradability of dye wastewater, which is followed by biological aerated filter (BAF) system to further remove organic substances in terms of discharge requirement. The results showed that 97.6% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal by the combination process was achieved at the optimum process parameters: pH of 3.5, H22

Opis:
In the last few years, RSM method has been used widely to analyze, optimize and evaluate the interaction of independent factors for chemical, biochemical, and environmental processes. This study examined and evaluated the applicability of this method to manage Oilfield Produced Water to prevent marine environment due to the presence of hard degradable compounds by ozonation process. In this study simulated oil-water sample and a homogenizer reactor was used. The main reactor used in this study was impeinger equipped with sintered glass filter through which the treated oil-water was entered to reactor in the form of discontinuous flow. After ozonation and at the end of the reaction time (60 min), the concentration of oil hydrocarbons was determined by a gas chromatography device equipped with a flame ionization detector. The performance of the central composite design (CCD) approach was evaluated by the F-Value, P-Value, R2, lack of fit test and Adequate Precision parameters to determine the influence of effective factors, including ozonation time, pH, ozone dose, and TPH concentration on the TPH removal efficiency. The mean TPH efficiency obtained from the design of the 30-step experiment resulting from surface-response method was 49.903%, with a standard deviation of 12.47. This study showed the high power of model adopted from the central composite design to predict the hydrocarbons removal from oilfield water using advanced oxidation process, and it was proved that this model can be used alone to determine the design space nature.

Opis:
Minimalne stężenia hamujące wyznaczone względem tych szczepów dla sulfanilamidu i sulfametoksazolu wynosiły odpowiednio 15 μmol dm–3 (Microbacterium spp.) i 19 μmol dm–3 (C. freudii).
Advanced oxidation processes (AOP) are often used to degrade of organic pollutants that are resistant to biodegradation and highly toxic. Examples of such substances are sulfonamides classified as synthetic chemotherapeutics agents having a bacteriostatic effect. However, the application of AOP is useful and proper only when the resulting products will be less ecotoxic than substrates. The purpose of our study was to compare the ecotoxicity of sulfanilamide and sulfamethoxazole and products of their oxidation by hydroxyl radicals (HO). These radicals were generated during the photocatalytic reaction carried out in the presence of TiO2. Ecotoxicological assessment was determined using a standardized MARA® toxicity test kit and procedures recommended by the test manufacturer. In MARA® test, eleven genetically diverse microorganisms (ten strains of bacteria and one yeast) are used as bioindicators. It was found, that the most of bioindicators was practically insensitive to sulfonamides investigated at concentrations to 500 μmol dm–3. Microbacterium spp. and Citrobacter freudii were much more sensitive microorganisms than the others. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MTC) determined against these strains to sulfanilamide and sulfamethoxazole were 15 μmol dm–3 (Microbacterium spp.) and 19 μmol dm–3 (C. freudii), respectively. Additionally, it was found that the resultant inhibitory effect on the growth of tested microorganisms decreased during the AOP, but it was much slower than accompanying degradation of sulfonamides. The strongest effect was observed with microorganisms more sensitive to sulfonamides. However, in a few cases it was observed the increase in the inhibition during the AOP.

Opis:
Organic compounds are the most diverse group of contaminants. The largest anthropogenic source of these contaminants in water is municipal and industrial wastewater. One of the indicators of surface water pollution is biological oxygen demand (BOD). Purifying water from organic micropollutants is a serious challenge and requires the development of newer and more effective methods. The removal of such contaminants is most effective only in advanced oxidation processes (AOP), which include UV photolysis and photocatalysis. The presented results are from preliminary research to evaluate the effectiveness of water treatment by ultraviolet (UV) photolysis and photocatalysis. Treatment efficiency was evaluated on the basis of changes in the BOD index before and after the advanced oxidation process of raw water. The values of the BOD5 index determined in accordance with PN-EN 25813:1997. The exposure time of the samples was a maximum of 60 minutes. The tested material was water samples taken from the Rudawa River, which is one of the drinking water sources for Krakow. The initial BOD5 value (expressed as concentration of O2) for all samples was about 8 mg/L but it has decreased to over 2 mg/L due to AOP processes. This means that after an hour, more than 75% of organic compounds present in the raw water were removed. For photocatalysis (TiO2-MMT), the exposure time of the samples was a maximum of 35 minutes. Water samples taken from the Rudawa River were also used as test material. The initial BOD5 value for all samples was about 9 mg/L but it has decreased to about 4 mg/L due to the photocatalysis process. This means that after 35 minutes, 55% of the organic compounds present in the raw water were removed.

Opis:
In this work, phenol oxidation in aqueous solution promoted by the effect of the oxidizing agents H2O2, O3 and UV radiation and their synergy in four different advanced oxidation processes (O3, O3/UV, H2O2/O3 and O3/H2O2/UV) were assayed. Studies were performed with a closed-loop hydraulic circuit set up with a relatively high volume of solution (500 cm3) during 90 min of treatment time. Parameters such as concentration for oxidizing species, pH, presence of UV irradiation were evaluated. The resulting degradation efficiencies were evaluated using GC-MS. The agents here used were selected considering their ease of handling and low toxicity, generation of deposited matter or sludge, so a filtration treatment for the analysis of the samples was not required. In all cases, it was observed that with increasing treatment time better degradation efficiencies were obtained. The best results were obtained with the combination of O3/H2O2/UV where up to 95% degradation was attained at pH 9, which is due to active species generated in the process, e.g., O3 and OH˙, on the contaminant. SPE was performed for determining the presence of several by-products, mainly: catechol, resorcinol and hydroquinone, which were identified.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) due to natural and anthropogenic processes are widely spread substances in the environment. It was proved that some of these pollutants can cause serious humans health problems such as hemolytic anemia, liver, cataracts and retina damage, neurological diseases, and primarily some PAHs are cancerogenic. These substances are hardly removable biologically so modern techniques such as ultrasonication should be developed. The articles reveal the removal effectiveness of 7 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which were recognized in water from highway drainage system by using the ultrasound treatment process. Results showed that after 45 min of sonication, the average removal of PAHs reached 59%. The reduction of analyzed substances was proportional to treated time and irradiation amplitude. Furthermore, because of ozone addition to the sonicated samples, the efficiency of the treatment was significantly higher. The average PAHs degradation rate at the 10 mgL–1 dosage of O3 assisted with ultrasonication was equal to 96%.

This article describes the design of photo catalyst reactor for oil removing from produced water. Real produced water containing a combination of organic compounds was treated with zinc oxide nanoparticles. In this study, ultraviolet radiations were used to find the efficiency of removing the oil content from the water produced that brought from the Al-Ahdab oilfield in kut/ Iraq by advanced oxidation process (AOP) using (ZnO/UV) in batch system and continuous system. In batch system were studied the effect of zinc oxide concentration (nanoparticles), time of irradiation, and pH. The highest removal rate of oil from the produced water (100%) was obtained during the following optimal conditions: ZnO NPs as catalyst = 55 mg/L, pH =3, at the time of irradiation of 90 minutes in batch experiments. In the continuous system, the effects of flowrate, number of UV-A lamp and time of reaction were studied, the results obtained were the efficiency of decomposition decreases with increasing the flow rate of solution in reactor, the maximum removal efficiency of the process (ZnO/UV) was 80% at 20 mL/min and irradiation time 120 min. In general, zinc oxide is beneficial through its high oil adsorption capacity in addition, It lowers the amount of oil in the produced water.

Opis:
The paper discusses the issue of removing persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from wastewater, especially the polycyclic organic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The results obtained in literature studies indicate that the commonly employed traditional methods of wastewater treatment are not always efficient in eliminating the hardly bio-degradable pollutants. Therefore, extensive research is being conducted on the application of efficient POPs removal technologies. One of the considered variants involves incorporating advanced oxidation processes (AOP) into the wastewater treatment systems based on the biological processes. These include the reagentless methods, e.g. the processes involving ultrasounds and hydrodynamic cavitation. On the basis of the author’s own studies conducted in a laboratory system comprising a static cavitation reactor, the possibility of applying hydrodynamic cavitation for the decomposition of PAHs was evaluated on the basis of model solutions of anthracene and phenanthrene. It was shown that the employed advanced oxidation process with hydro-cavitation has a significant impact on reducing the concentration of the considered PAHs. It was confirmed that the degradation degree of a substance depends on the intensity and the course of the cavitation process. The energy efficiency of the conducted process was analyzed as well and expressed as the ratio pertaining to the amount of the degraded compound to the electric energy supplied to the system.

Opis:
The paper presents an assessment of the removal degree of selected contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) present in various water matrices subjected to advanced oxidation processes based on the action of natural sunlight radiation. The test were conducted on tap water, surface water, rainwater and an effluent form a communal wastewater treatment plant spiked with micropollutants: diclofenac, caffeine and carbamazepine pharmaceutical compounds; oxadiazon, triclosan, trialat - pesticides; bisphenol A, 4-octylophenol - industrial additives, and mestranol and progesterone - hormones. The water solution were exposed to O2, O3, H2O2, O2/O3, O2/H2O2, O3/H2O2, O2/O3/H2O2 and supported by sunlight. The decomposition of compounds was evaluated based on their removal degrees estimated by the use of the chromatographic analysis. It was observed that the physico-chemical composition of the water matrix had a significant impact on the decomposition of the tested compounds. The occurrence of high molecular weight organic matter had a positive influence on the removal of pharmaceutical compounds. The highest CECs removal degrees were noted during the implementation of processes assisted by O3. However none of the performed configuration of advanced oxidation processes allowed for a complete decomposition of CECs in the time frame of the experiment.
