The increasing trend concerning loosing respect towards honoured authorities can nowadays be observed in most of the areas of social life. This refers also to universities and decreasing respect towards academics. The study at Karol Adamiecki Univeristy of Economics in Katowice, focused on structure and hierarchy of values declared by its students, were expected to reveal whether this assumption is true. The study characterized reasons for and directions of change in the declared hierarchy of values among the young. It was of high importance to diagnose the core of interactions between students and academics, i.e. to answer a question whether academics employed by the University are perceived by the students as persons whose personal approach and behaviours could be followed. The results show that nowadays academic is not respected as an authority for her/his students. The way to regain respect seems to be based on reinforcement of traditional master (tutor) – student relations, as university is this particular place where this kind of interrelations should develop. The task of building this relation needs time and efforts, as well as sets a high standard for academics to present unimpeachable ethical approach as well as openness towards students and dynamic changes in the environment.

The author analyses the attitude of experienced academics towards young researchers. The title implies, and in particular mentioned deontological approach, that the article deals with the professional obligations of the former towards the latter. The obligations result from the existing regulations or from praxis. The principles formulated by Edward Marczewski, the famous Polish mathematician, served as the main point of reference in the article. It is important to mention the fact that not only did he articulate the principles, he also brought them into effect. The author also refers to the importance of Marczewski heritage in the contemporary deontological thought.
Autor prowadzi rozważania na temat stosunku doświadczonych pracowników akademickich do badaczy stawiających pierwsze kroki w obszarze pracy naukowej. Sam tytuł artykułu, a zwłaszcza zasygnalizowane w nim podejście deontologiczne, wskazuje, iż mowa jest o powinnościach zawodowych tych pierwszych wobec drugich. Powinnościach wynikających z obowiązujących regulacji lub przyjętego zwyczaju. Głównym punktem odniesienia w artykule były zasady kształtowania młodych naukowców sformułowane przez znanego polskiego matematyka Edwarda Marczewskiego. Dodajmy, że zasady nie tylko wyartykułowane, ale i wprowadzane przez niego w życie. Autor odniósł się również do miejsca, jakie zajmuje spuścizna Marczewskiego we współczesnej myśli deontologicznej.

“Ilustrowana Republika” was a daily published in Łódź in 1925–1939. Apart from the news, it published economic, social, cultural, educational, and sports information as well as materials on tertiary education. The issue of higher education was raised in over 440 articles and notes, which included information on the Łódź and other Polish universities. Journalists wrote about activities which aimed at making Łódź a university city and about more important events from the life of Polish universities. Fewer publications focused on academic issues; however, a great part of articles showed individual and atypical student conduct sometimes hard to accept such as suicidal attempts, conflicts with the law, organising anti-Semitic manifestations by right-wing students for almost the entire Interwar period. This work does not provide a complete picture of tertiary education or the academic community before WWII as it presents only facts and events described in the newspaper. However, it may be useful as a basic source for more comprehensive works concerning higher education in the past.

The wide expansion of digital technologies has influenced research in all fields of science as well as educational activities. Scientific objective: The purpose of this article is to examine critical areas of academic library activity, in a significant or requiring far-reaching changes in all aspects, in the context of needs of the scientific community. Research methods: It was decided that the method that will allow to outline the situation in this area will be qualitative content analysis texts from leading journals. For this purpose, the main databases of Web of Science articles have been searched: Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED), Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), and Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI), using the instruction TS = (“academic library” OR “academic libraries” OR “university library” OR “university libraries”) AND TS = (scholars or scientists or faculty or researchers or academics). The query limited to the last five years yielded gave as results 170 articles, of which 51 were deemed relevant to the issues discussed. Results and conclusions: In the light of qualitative content analysis of those texts, it is possible to distinguish following areas as important: general approach of scholars and librarians to cooperation, practices of research support, access to information resources adapted to scholars’ needs, data curation support, publication strategies support. On this basis, conclusions have been drawn about the role and type of support that academic libraries may provide in the process of scholarly communication. Cognitive value: This study has contributed to the research into the evaluation of academic library’s support services in the process of scholarly communication.

The purpose of this article is to present the opportunities for the academics offered by the social media. Aim. The research aim of this article is to explore academic youth’s education process and career in the UK. The research focuses on Lithuanian students from three prestigious British universities. Methods. The study revealed three questions: the reasons of students choises to study in prestigious higher schools of the UK, students’ satisfaction in terms of their education process; their placement in the labor market, or academic/business career. To answer the research questions qualitative research was conducted by using structured, partly-structured in-depth interviews, the questionnaire forms, discussions, and observation methods. Results. The analysis of the empirical research data revealed that the determining factor of students’ choices was the high quality of the studies and international work perspectives after graduation as well as the rating of the universities and the recommendations of senior fellow students, progressive learning and living environment. Furthermore, they had the possibility to become part of the international social web. The results of the survey indicate that students give more value to individualism emphasizing achievement, critical thinking, high level of education. They also appreciate the possibilities to apply knowledge in real-world setings, also to the career in international business or academic field, which is garanteed by most reputable universities. In such evironment students are encouraged to be responsible actors and to create a more sustainable world (UNESCO (ESD), 2017). Cognitive value. With the help of a case study of education in the UK, the paper reveals the sustainable education perspectives.

W tekście przedstawiono autoetnograficzną reakcję na wyniki ankiety, w której pytano nauczycieli akademickich o poczucie sprawiedliwości dotyczące narzędzi zaproponowanych przez uczelnie podczas epidemii COVID-19. Analiza 118 odpowiedzi oraz ich uzasadnień wskazuje, że dla 77% z nich narzędzia zaproponowane podczas pandemii COVID-19 są sprawiedliwe, a dla 23% niesprawiedliwe. Ponadto respondenci kwestionowali zasadność pytania o sprawiedliwość w odniesieniu do cyfrowych narzędzi. Powyższe wyniki stanowią na gruncie autoetnografii katalizator refleksji dotyczących wyobrażeń autora o podejmowanym temacie badań i relacji ludzi ze sztuczną inteligencją (AI). W wyniku przeprowadzonej analizy postulowane jest posługiwanie się dychotomią: „sprawiedliwe/niesprawiedliwe” względem narzędzi cyfrowych używanych podczas kształcenia.
The text presents an autoethnographic response to the results of a survey in which academics were asked about their sense of justice regarding the tools offered by universities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The analysis of 118 responses and their justifications indicates that for 77% of them the tools proposed during the COVID-19 epidemic are fair and for 23% – unfair. In addition, respondents questioned the validity of the question of fairness with regard to digital tools. On the basis of autoethnography, the above result is a catalyst for reflecting on the author’s ideas about the research topic and the relationship of people with artificial intelligence (AI). As a result of the conducted analysis, it is postulated that the dichotomy “fair/unfair” be used in relation to digital tools used in education.

Online impulse buying is a complex behavior that is determined by many factors, not only external but also internal. Some consumers are less prone to irrational behavior than others. The aim of this study was to explore the impulse buying tendencies of challenging e-consumers. Due to the specificity of the profession, characteristics of highly educated people, and the generational mentality, academics of Generation X were assumed to be representatives of these e-consumers, unwilling to impulse buying. The data collected with an online survey confirmed this assumption. Respondents had not only a negative opinion of studied behavior but also a low tendency to it. Furthermore, this study was to indicate a group of stimuli that would induce unplanned purchases among challenging e-consumers. The results suggest that academics are more prone to impulse buying if it can be rationalized with, e.g., product utility or monetary savings, than in the case of purely emotional or hedonic reasons.

In 2020 and 2021, modern society faced a historically unprecedented situation in the field of education. Education systems worldwide underwent a massive transformation from conventional forms of face-to-face learning to distance learning alternatives. This forced transformation of teaching, triggered by the global COVID-19 pandemic, has been a major test of resilience and adaptability for universities and other academic institutions. This emergency situation, and the way it was handled, was the subject of empirical study by the University of Finance and Administration in the form of a questionnaire-based survey focused concurrently on students and academics during the 2020/2021 academic year, during what has been referred to as the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. We observed the attitudes of students and academics, then broke these down to greater levels of detail through mutual confrontation in the areas of evaluating the quality of online education, the decreasing or increasing levels of interest in courses, the level of communication skills of educators, or their availability during online office hours. We also explored the key question of the role and significance of the absence of physical interactions that characterizes distance learning. The empirical data point to ambivalence in the perceptions of online learning in both populations studied. While, on the one hand, there are clear collective expressions of confidence in the communication skills of educators, partly in the overall quality of the online instruction they provide and partly in their willingness to continue to enhance it in subsequent semesters, on the other hand, the expectations of students were not fully met in certain subjects, which was marked by a palpable decline in interest. One criterion that was critical for the emotional acceptance of online learning is the absence of physical interaction and presence in the school environment. It would therefore appear that the ideal model for future education is a combination of full-time and distance learning that would combine their respective benefits, while eliminating their perceived shortcomings.

Niniejszy artykuł dotyka problematyki wzorów prowadzenia karier akademickich przez osoby wywodzące się z klas ludowych, która to tematyka w polskiej przestrzeni badawczej nie była dotychczas eksplorowana. Podstawowym źródłem danych w niniejszym artykule są narracyjne wywiady biograficzne z pracownikami dydaktyczno-badawczymi polskich uczelni, urodzonymi po 1980 r., którzy, wywodząc się z rodzin o skromnych tradycjach intelektualnych oraz deficytowych kapitałach społecznych, kulturowych i ekonomicznych, zdołali z powodzeniem wejść w świat akademicki. Autorki, opierając się na zebranych danych, próbują uchwycić czynniki wpływające na kariery naukowe tych osób. Główną tezą niniejszego artykułu jest stwierdzenie, że przebieg kariery akademickiej i szanse osiągnięcia sukcesu w świecie nauki zależne są od zróżnicowanych czynników, związanych i niezwiązanych z jednostką: indywidualnych talentów, kompetencji i predyspozycji psychospołecznych, zewnętrznych uwarunkowań, np. legislacyjnych, technologicznych czy kategorii społeczno-demograficznych, takich jak pochodzenie klasowe, zmiany pokoleniowe, płeć.
This article addresses the issue of the patterns of pursuing academic careers by people with working-class backgrounds, a topic that has not been explored by Polish researchers so far. The analysis was based on narrative biographical interviews with the academic staff of Polish universities born after 1980, who, despite coming from families with modest intellectual traditions and scarce social, cultural, and economic capital, managed to enter the academic world successfully. Based on the collected data, we try to identify the factors influencing their academic careers. The main point of this article is that the course of an academic career and the chances of achieving success in the world of science depend on diverse factors. They are both dependent on and independent of an individual, and range from: 1) individual talents, competencies, and psychosocial predispositions; 2) external conditions, e.g. legislative, technological, etc.; and 3) socio-demographic categories such as class background, generational changes, and gender.
