Re-exam
Opis:
Re-exam is a form of supplementary assessment designed to provide second opportunity for students who scored final course marks between [30 and 40). This study employed survey design that involves both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Questionnaire, interview and document analysis for collecting data from both primary and secondary sources were designed and executed. 315 students and 15 instructors were incorporated as a sample using stratified random and purposive sampling techniques respectively. Available sampling technique was utilized to add 10 cluster registrar heads and 18 registrar data managers as a sample. The finding of the study showed that: poor academic background of the students, health problem at the time of exam and deliberately scoring FX grade were the main causes that expose students to score FX grade. Additionally, it was found out that, majority of students scored FX grade in across departmental courses than home base courses. The finding further indicated that, re-exam is playing great role in helping low achieving students to improve their academic achievement as 43% of the students who scored FX grade in their first assessment have scored C and above marks after re-exam. The relationship between study year level and the number of students who scored FX grade (r = -0.92, p < 0.05) is negative and significant. The computed t-test result t(971) = 1.0, p> 0.05 indicated that males and females are not differed significantly on their achievement of re-exam

Research from multiple traditions demonstrates the impact of children’s social environments on their academic motivation, learning, and achievement. The present literature review attempts to better understand the family-school relationship, with a particular emphasis on parental influences on the child’s academic achievement and later career development. This paper focuses on the proximal (parent-child interactions) and distal (familial social/cultural context) dimension. Additionally, an attempt is made to understand the gender differences that are seen in children in their academic preferences and later career choices.

Opis:
After decades of research into disadvantages for girls in the educational system, “male underachievement” has recently become a frequently discussed topic in the social sciences. A glance at explanations for the development of gender differences in academic achievement reveals that the disadvantages for males and females are explained differently to some extent, but that gender stereotypes seem to play an important part in most popular theoretical approaches. This article gives an overview of actual gender differences in academic achievement in Europe. Following a short description of the nature and functioning of stereotypes in general, and of gender stereotypes in particular, the article discusses the current state of empirical research on the most important theoretical explanations for gender differences in academic achievement and the role gender stereotypes play in these theories. Finally, open questions – and thus fields for further research – are outlined.

This study addresses the question how students’ engagement and burnout are related to academic achievement the grade point average and the number of passed exams. The study involved 205 students. Multiple regression analysis indicated that burnout is direct significant predictor of grade point average, but the engagement is not. Relation between students’ engagement and the grade point average was mediated by level of burnout. Further analysis revealed that students who have passed all the exams in the first term were characterized by lower level of burnout than students who have not passed all the exams in the first term. However, students from both groups did not differ, in the level of study engagement. The results indicate that high academic achievement is related to the lack of a burnout rather than the presence of engagement. Results also show that the grade point average and the number of passed exams are poor indicators of the level of students’ engagement.

Aim. The aim of this study is to present the relationship between educational interest and academic achievement of the secondary school students in East Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya, India. The standardised tool used for the study is the Educational Interest Record by Kulshrestha (2016). In order to assess the academic achievement, the final year examination results of students were collected. Methods. The sample of the study comprised of 300 secondary school students drawn from fifteen secondary schools under Meghalaya Board of School Education. Stratified random sampling was used with equal representation to gender and locale. Analysis was done by using Pearson ‘r’ (Product Moment Correlation) and t-test. Results. The findings of the study revealed a negative relationship between educational and academic achievement. There is a significant difference in the educational interest in terms of gender, but no significant difference was found between locales of the secondary school students. Conclusions. The assessment of the educational interest may be considered one of the crucial methods used in the education system, as teaching of subjects alone cannot help the students in the educational development. On the other hand, academic achievement is one of the areas in which relatively accurate information can be obtained with relation to individual’s ability or capacity. The study has provided information which indicate that students do not have a clear understanding about their own interests and abilities. Hence, guidance and counselling need to be integrated into the secondary school curriculum in the state in order to help the students better understand their interests and abilities. Educational guidance and counselling will also enable the students to plan both their higher education and career in thefuture.

The objective of this study was to examine the effect of peer tutoring on college students’ academic achievement and, as well, their competencies in communication and collaboration. In particular, we investigated whether or not the effect of peer tutoring depends on the role taken in peer tutoring. 373 Korean college students attending peer tutoring participated in this study. A pre-post design employing a self-report questionnaire was used. The results indicated that peer tutoring improved both academic achievement and communicative and collaborative skills. The findings also suggested that the effect of peer-tutoring on academic achievement and responsibility for teamwork was valid only with regard to those in the role of tutees. The implications of this study are discussed.

Video games have been around for more than four decades. The purpose of video games is to entertain. Over time, the ways in which video games entertain have changed. Recently, there has been an influx of video games with the intent to educate. These games were created to educate the player while keeping them entertained. The impact of video games on education has yet to be examined. The purpose of this study is to gauge the effect of video games and its correlation with college entrance-exam scores. We assert that one major variable affecting the outcome of education and college entrance-exam score is the sudden prominence of video games in the American culture. Thus, our research will be on the effects that video games have on education, whether positive or negative.

Selection of new students is based on student potential. Research on the potential of the cognitive abilities and records of Islamic school students’ academic achievement in Indonesia are still very rare. This paper presents empirical data about the predictive ability of a test of scholastic ability for the academic achievement of Islamic school students in Indonesia. This research used a quantitative approach with a survey method that used the Ministry of Religious Affair (MORA)’s Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and Students’ scores on 5 subjects in the first semester. The subjects of this study were 9609 Islamic school students selected using a quota sampling technique that represented Islamic schools in Indonesia. The results of this study indicate that all of the SAT subsets, those are verbal, numerical, analytical and spatial, are significant predictors of academic achievement of Islamic school students in Indonesia. The empirical analytical sub-test is the strongest predictor of Islamic school students’ academic scores. While, the analytical sub-test has very significant correlation with the academic score on Islamic Studies subjects. Meanwhile the verbal sub-test has a very strong relationship with academic achievement in Arabic and English subjects, the numerical sub-test very strongly relates to academic achievement in science and mathematics subjects. Among the four SAT subtests, the spatial sub-test had the lowest correlation with all subjects

Are hopes pinned on mixed-age grouping in preschool and elementary school substantiated by scientific data? The answer was looked for in TIMSS 2015 research in Poland. It was carried on in the middle of the reform of school entry age which lowered it from seven to six year of life. In the country representative sample of fourth-graders 17.8 percent of pupils entered school at the age of six. In 254 classrooms the dispersion of age varied from 0.20 to 0.65 years and was greater than in TIMSS 2011 (0.15–0.40). The analysis of achievement in mathematics and science was performer by means of hierarchical linear models with the control of pupils’ gender, age, initial skills, and SES, as well as school’s location and class size. The achievement in mathematics was correlated significantly negative with the dispersion of age in the class. The younger pupils scored the highest in mathematics and science in classes with moderate dispersion. The results do not support a belief that mixed-age grouping is beneficial to academic achievement.

Introduction: The increasing burden of undernutrition and overnutrition at both ends of the nutrition spectrum in children are often accompanied by adverse consequences in school performance. Children with poor nutritional status had lower scores on tests of cognitive functioning, lower activity levels, and poorer psychomotor development, whereas severe malnutrition often leads to impaired psychological and intellectual development. Purpose: To investigate the relationship between children’s nutritional status, their socioeconomic background as well as their parents’s beliefs, attitudes and practices in child feeding with their academic achievement in school. Materials and methods: Anthropometric measure-ments and socioeconomic background information were collected from systematically selected school children aged 10 to 12 years old (n=309), while information regarding parental child feeding practices were obtained via a set of self-administered questionnaire. Results: Based on the World Health Organization (WHO) growth charts, 10.7% and 18.1% of the children were thin and overweight or obese, respectively. Results also showed that children’s nutritional status, household socioeconomic background and parental child feeding beliefs and practices were interrelated with the children’s academic achievement. Conclusion: These findings justified the need for relevant health and nutrition interventions in schools, especially the children of bottom billion community living in the rural areas.

The purpose of the study was to determine differences in self-determination between high school students with and without disabilities and to determine the influence of three predictors of self-determination in vocational education: gender, group and grade point average. Research was done by comparing students with the method of pairs. The results show that students with disabilities have a lower level of self-determination than their peers; significant predictors of self-determination are group and grade point average. Results reveal important fields of intervention for self-determination development, especially for students with disabilities in vocational education. This is also the first study of student self-determination in Slovenian vocational education with specific cultural and education background.

Opis:
Many data sets analyzed in human and social sciences have a multilevel or hierarchical structure. By hierarchy we mean that units of a certain level (also referred micro units) are grouped into, or nested within, higher level (or macro) units. In these cases, the units within a cluster tend to be more different than units from other clusters, i.e., they are correlated. Thus, unlike in the classical setting where there exists a single source of variation between observational units, the heterogeneity between clusters introduces an additional source of variation and complicates the analysis.
Collecting data on Educational Research often does not follow the principles of simple random sample, suspected by classical regression, but rather a sample by nested clusters. Selected to students and also the contextual units to which they belong such as classes, courses, schools, neighborhoods or regions, and so forth.
Using classical regression bias is produced in the typical error of measurement and an increased likelihood of committing errors of inference. The hierarchical linear or multilevel models are most suitable because they consider the hierarchical relationships and also provide estimates on the contextual variability of regression coefficients. In practice, often the data structures are not hierarchical, are more complex structures such as cross-classification (level 2 or macro). For example, students (level 1 or micro) to attend different courses at a school while in other schools there are students who attend the same courses. Two examples of application to academic achievement of students are presented. First, a model of cross-classification of level 2 is used. Second, a hierarchical model of two levels (students and schools) is presented, taking into account the different areas of science - scientific-humanistic courses and technology courses.
