Opis:
From the seeds of Acacia confusa, a chitinase-like antifungal protein designated as acaconin that demonstrated antifungal activity toward Rhizoctonia solani with an IC50 of 30±4 µM was isolated. Acaconin demonstrated an N-terminal sequence with pronounced similarity to chitinases and a molecular mass of 32 kDa. It was isolated by chromatography on Q-Sepharose, SP-Sepharose and Superdex 75 and was not bound by either ion exchanger. Acaconin was devoid of chitinase activity. The antifungal activity against Rhizoctonia solani was completely preserved from pH 4 to 10 and from 0°C to 70°C. Congo Red staining at the tips of R. solani hyphae indicated inhibition of fungal growth. However, there was no antifungal activity toward Mycosphaerella arachidicola, Fusarium oxysporum, Helminthosporium maydis, and Valsa mali. Acaconin inhibited proliferation of breast cancer MCF-7 cells with an IC50 of 128±9 µM but did not affect hepatoma HepG2 cells. Its IC50 value toward HIV-1 reverse transcriptase was 10±2.3 µM. The unique features of acaconin include relatively high stability when exposed to changes in ambient pH and temperature, specific antifungal and antitumor actions, potent HIV-reverse transcriptase inhibitory activity, and lack of binding by strongly cationic and anionic exchangers.

The aim of the present work was to investigate the acclimation potential of acacia hybrid (Acacia mangium Willd×Acacia auriculiformis A.Cunn.ex Benth)vegetative propagules to soil water stress in the nursery of Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences, Chittagong University. Acacia hybrid showed significant decrease in total plant biomass in two months water-stressed conditions. Allocation of assimilates to root growth relative to shoot found to be an important acclimation mechanism. Leaf area ratio (LAR)increased under water-stressed plants with simultaneous increase in specific leaf area (SLA)but almost no change in leaf weight ratio (LWR). Significant increase in LAR with limited water supply by increasing SLA was likely to be an important acclimation potential since this relative increase in leaf area compensated, at least partially, for a lower photosynthesis under water-stressed conditions aswas evident from decreased mean total biomass under water-stressed regimes.

Opis:
Recurrent problems have been observed for biomass measurement in tree sprouts, mainly due to differences in patterns of biomass distribution and the bias generated by using models for mature trees. The objective of this research was to evaluate models to estimate aboveground biomass in sprouts from two-year-old stumps of Short Rotation Woody Crops (SRWC) used for energetic purposes. The study was conducted in Central Chile (Bío-Bío region) under a complete block design and four replications. Three plant species were included: Eucalyptus globulus, E. denticulata, and Acacia dealbata, established in three population densities (5,000, 10,000 and 15,000 trees per ha). Two groups of nonlinear models were used on three independent variables: root collar diameter (squared mean of two dominant stems), height (mean of two dominant stems) and number of epicormic stems. In the allometric model, the total aboveground biomass and the aboveground biomass by component were explained as the product of the mean square of the root collar diameter, mean height of the two dominant new sprouts and total number of epicormic sprouts as the predictive variable. Values of coefficient of determination (R2 ) ranged from 0.78 to 0.95 and RMSE ranged from 168 to 913 g. The species of E. globulus showed higher RMSE for biomass estimation in the all components except the branch component. The inclusion of dummy variables to identify the differences in each parameter of the models explained the seasonality of the biomass accumulation in tree sprouts at 10, 21, and 31 months of age, improving the model goodness of fit RMSE by 27%. Accurate prediction of sprouts aboveground biomass was obtained by the models only evaluating the two dominant epicormic sprouts in the stump, avoiding the need of individual sprouts evaluation or using destructive methods for biomass measurement.

Opis:
A study was conducted to investigate the effect of growing location in the physico-chemical properties of gum arabic obtained from Acacia senegal. Authentic representative gum exudates samples were collected from Abederafi, Yabello, Awash and Filtu areas of Ethiopia. The experiment was conducted to determine Moisture content (MC), Ash content (Ash), pH, Relative Viscosity (RV), Nitrogen (N), Crude Protein (CP) and Mineral contents. Laboratory analyses were employed to determine the physico-chemical characteristics. The results were analyzed by using SAS Statistical Software. The analysis indicated that very high significant differences (p < 0.001) were seen on Ash, pH, RV, iron, calcium, and sodium contents of the gum arabic samples between the study sites. Furthermore, significant differences (p < 0.05) were indicated for N, CP, Cu, K contents. The results also showed MC, Mn and Mg contents have no significant difference among growing locations. According to our results, the percentage moisture content of the gum arabic samples were between 12.64 % and 13.41 %, while Ash percentage were between 0.32 % and 16.98 %. The mean pH values of the gum samples, obtained by employing different concentration of aqueous solutions also ranged between 4.4 and 4.97. In addition, the relative viscosity of the gum samples studied fall between 0.9 to 4.2 centipose, while Nitrogen and crude protein contents of the gum arabic samples from the study areas were from 0.313 % to 0.513 % and 1.943 % to 3.21 %, respectively. The major mineral element compositions of the gum arabic samples in descending order were Mg, Ca, Na, Cu, Fe, Mn and K. As compared to international standards and prior studies on gum arabic, the gum-arabic samples from the study sites have comparable physico-chemical characteristics.

Specific sugar profiles of six different origins nectar honeys were established. Separation of honey sugars by HPLC resulted in following fractions: fructose, glucose, di-, tri saccharides and two fractions of higher oligosaccharides; first one containing tetra-, penta and hexasaccharides and a second oligosaccharides higher than heptasaccharides. The contents of particular fractions in a dry mass of honeys were determined as well as ratios of fructose to glucose concentrations (F/G). Some correlations between a sugar composition and a type of honey were found, however, only rape honeys presented really distinctive relation. These honeys differed significantly from other types, i.e. contrary to others rape honeys contained more glucose than fructose, the lowest concentration of di- and trisaccharides and did not contain or contained very low amounts of tetra-, penta- and hexasaccharides. Acacia honeys featured a highest concentration of fructose, di- and trisaccharides but the lowest concentration of glucose and oligosaccharides higher than heptasaccharides. These sugars were found in the highest concentration in linden honeys. It was also found that the concentration of oligosacharides higher than heptasacharides in rape, linden, floral and heather honeys was higher than trisaccharides.

Opis:
Biofuels are alternatives to fossil fuels for ensuring energy security and for mitigating climate change. Currently, most biofuels are in the form of a bioethanol that is generated from starch or sugar. Increasing energy demand, food insecurity and ecological concerns leads to evaluating agricultural, forestry and urban lignocellulosic wastes as being very important for energy production. This is because all celluloses and hemicelluloses of lignocellulosic wastes can be converted into bioethanol reducing sugars. Hence, the current study was initiated to determine the chemical composition and best diluted acid hydrolysis pretreatment of Acacia mellifera sawdust for bioethanol production. Our study indicates that the chemical composition of Acacia mellifera sawdust exhibits different composition in extractives such as alcohol, cellulose, lignin and ash. Accordingly, the extractive content of the sawdust was 6.3% soluble alcohol toluene, 52.9% cellulose, 23.9% lignin, 4.2% ash, and 6.92% moisture content, respectively. In our experiment, the biomass at a solid loading rate of 0.66% was pretreated at 121 °C with different sulfuric acid concentrations (0.5, 0.75, and 1 %, w/w) and residence times (10, and 20 min). Total reducing sugars in the hydrolyzed sample with acid and time were then analyzed. The reducing sugars obtained at 0.50%, 0.75% and 1% dilute sulfuric acid concentration with time residence of 10 min and 20 min were, 7.39±0.24 and 8.4±0.9, 8.03±0.64 and 9.18±0.43, 9.68±1.30 and 10.23±0.80, respectively. With the increasing acid concentration and residence time, the amount of glucose in the filtrates increased. Therefore, the total reducing sugar concentration in the hydrolysate of Acacia mellifera saw dust was significantly influenced by the sulfuric acid concentration and residence time. From this study, it can be concluded that total reducing sugars in lignocellulosic wastes are widely available and easily obtainable, they can be considered as potential feedstocks for bioethanol production.

The effects of 6- Benzylaminopurine (BA), different basal medium, sucrose concentration and gelling agent were investigated for shoot induction and multiplication of Acacia auriculiformis. Nodal explants derived from 5-month-old seedlings yielded the highest shoot multiplication rate in Murashige and Skoog medium (MS) with 0.44 μM BA, 30 g/L sucrose and 2 g/L Gelrite. The highest mean number of shoots (10) and mean length of shoots (5.07mm) were also obtained in this medium. Qualitative observation of the shoots cultured in 0.44 μM BA were greener and vigorous in growth as compared to shoots cultured on higher concentrations of BA (22.2 μM). MS medium produced a significantly higher number of shoots (18) compared to Woody Plant Medium (WPM) (11) and B5 medium (10). Media solidified with different gelling agents also produced a significantly different number of shoots with 2 g/L Gelrite produced the highest number of shoots (23). The highest percentage of shoots rooted was found in the MS medium without any growth regulators (40.0%) followed by medium supplemented with Indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) at 9.84 μM and the combination of 9.84 μM IBA with 5.37 μM α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) (33.3%). MS medium without any plant growth regulators produced the highest mean root length (84.33mm), whereas medium supplemented with 9.84 μM IBA produced the highest mean number of roots per shoot (4.33). Out planting of in vitro rooted shoots in shredded coconut husk as the substrate gave the highest percentage of survival (90%) during acclimatization in the greenhouse.

Opis:
With issues of high timber demand and illegal logging in the forest zones of Kyrgyzstan, agroforestry may serve as a viable option for rectification. Yields of timber and expected income from the most popular tree species are in most cases lacking. The goal of this study is to evaluate the timber yields and non-timber forest product from Ulmus, Poplar, Acacia and Juglans tree species in Kyrgyzstan. More focus was allocated to Poplar as this is one of the most common and preferred tree species in Kyrgyzstan. A sample size of 420 trees was recorded from 18 stands with 20 trees measured in each stand with the exception of Juglans which were 6 stands with 9-17 trees each The study estimated (i) tree volume using allometric parameters (ii) age-biomass relationship (iii) Factual Branch Analysis model to estimate the above ground biomass of the different tree segments (iii) revenue deduction and NPV of Poplar trees and (iv) biological rotation Age to determine the suitable age for Poplar harvesting. The findings show that NPV is highest at 10 years for Poplar when it is being considered for fast-growing timber. The biological rotation age was, however, higher at around 17 years. Site-specific age-biomass model appears to be suitable for estimating tree biomass since the tree allometry was found to differ significantly between studied stands even with similar age ranges. The developed relationship and tree database can adequately be applied to estimate tree volume and biomass in similar site conditions in the studied region.

This study aims at investigating the potential of Acacia gerrardii pod for the removal of Cr(VI) in batch system. Effect of solution pH, biosorbent dosage, initial concentration of Cr(VI), contact time on the removal process was examined. Complete removal of hexavalent chromium was achieved at pH values 1.0 and 2.0 whereas maximum removal of total chromium was obtained at pH of 3.0. The study showed that the biosorption and bioreduction mechanisms were involved in the removal process. The time required for complete removal of Cr(VI) using the pod of Acacia gerrardii was shortened with an increase in biomaterial dosage and decrease in Cr(VI) concentration. Kinetic data was well described using Park kinetic model. Freundlich isotherm model adequately fitted the equilibrium data indication multilayer adsorption of total chromium on the surface of biomaterial. The pod of Acacia gerrardii could be used efficiently for the removal of hexavalent chromium from aqueous solutions.

Opis:
Rehabilitation is an important stage in mining operations for environmental conservation. However, the shortage of topsoil makes it difficult to achieve rehabilitation in open-cast coal mines. Securing topsoil by mixing soil with fly ash (FA), which is treated as an industrial waste, is expected to solve this issue in coal mines. While mixing soil with FA makes it possible to secure the topsoil and treat industrial waste simultaneously, the high alkalinity of FA and the dissolution of heavy metals from FA may inhibit plant growth. This study investigated the effects of FA in the topsoil on plant growth via vegetation tests with simulated topsoil mixed with FA using Acacia mangium, a species of flowering tree: the FA mixing ratios were set to 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, and 100%. The growth of Acacia mangium was inhibited with increasing FA mixing ratio, especially from 60% to 80%. However, the growth rate of Acacia mangium in an FA mixing ratio of 100% was nearly comparable to that in a mixing ratio of 40%. Furthermore, there were no effects of the physical characteristics and pH conditions in the topsoil on the plant growth at any of the mixing ratios; meanwhi- le, the accumulated concentration of Al in the plant body increased significantly at an FA mixing ratio of 60%–80%. This suggests that the accumulation of Al, which inhibits plant growth, including root growth and its functions, in the plant body inhibited the growth of Acacia mangium. Therefore, the most important aspect in terms of rehabilitation concerning the use of FA for securing topsoil is not the mixing ratio of FA but the amount of Al in the FA and the accumulation of Al in the plant body.
Rekultywacja jest ważnym etapem w eksploatacji górniczej wzakresie ochrony środowiska. Brak wierzchniej warstwy gleby utrudnia osiągnięcie efektu rekultywacji w kopalniach odkrywkowych.

Point of present exploration was to figure out the anticorrosion activity of Acacia Cyanophylla (Saligna leaves) extract on the corrosion of mild steel in dilute sulfuric acid medium, using weight loss measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The result of the study revealed that the extract act as a potent inhibitor on mild steel in acid medium. The increase in inhibitor concentration and immersion time showed a positive effect on inhibition efficiency. EIS exhibited one capacitive loop which indicates that the corrosion reaction is controlled by charge transfer process. The increase of phase shift (n) in presence of (ACLE) lower surface roughness. This change reveals the adsorption of the inhibitor compound on the steel surface. According to the results of weight loss measurements, the adsorption of the extract on the steel surface can be described by the Langmuir isotherm. The inhibition mechanism of (ACLE) molecules involves physical interaction between the inhibitor and metal surface. Additionally, Protective film formation against acid attack was confirmed by FT-IR and AFM techniques.

Opis:
The amount of coal ash disposed as industrial wastes is increasing with increasing coal demands all over the world. Although coal ash is generally disposed by landfill, the demand of effective utilization of them is increasing because of the limitation of the disposal site. Moreover, in Indonesia, most of soil is classified as acrisol which is acid and clay-rich soil. As the plant growth is inhibited under the acid and low permeability, the utilization of coal ash is expected in order to improve physical and chemical conditions of seedbed in the revegetation area. In this paper, the utilization of coal ash for preparation of seedbed in disturbed land in Indonesian open cut coal mine is discussed by means of several laboratory tests, column leaching test, and laboratory vegetation test by using Acacia mangium. Considering the obtained results, it was suggested that the coal ash can be utilized to improve the physical and chemical conditions of seedbed and the growth rate of Acacia mangium by incorporated into soil with proper mixture rate.

The paper presents the analysis of absolute humidity of fresh robinia (False acacia) wood in bark from point of view of its use for energy production purposes. The analysis was taking into account diversified tree growth conditions and division into trunk, branches and thickness classes. The research results were compared to data specified in literature concerning absolute humidity of willow and poplar wood. From point of view of use for energy production purposes, robinia wood has more advantageous properties than willow or poplar wood. In fresh state its absolute humidity was 45% on the average, and depended on wood thickness - wood position in tree structure.
