The clear majority of people with a professional or amateur contact with music do not possess absolute pitch and get by perfectly well without it, making use of relative musical pitch. Yet many people dream of also fixing in their memory the actual pitches of the notes of the musical scale, which would effectively give them the chance to recognise and reproduce any chromatic pitch (C, C#, D, D#, etc.) without recourse to a reference note. Unfortunately, it almost always proves too late for them to develop absolute pitch. The question of the factors determining the forming of absolute pitch is still the subject of quite heated discussion. Practically from the outset of the interest in the phenomenon of absolute pitch (i.e. from the second half of the nineteenth century) controversial theories arose regarding its origins. In discussion on the subject, there was a clash of two fundamental views, regarding absolute pitch either as an innate ability or, on the contrary, as an ability that could be acquired at any age. With time, there emerged an increasing number of hypotheses accounting for the origin of absolute pitch: from the theory of the limitless possibility of absolute pitch acquisition through the theories of innate factors and of early learning, to the latest theory that links absolute pitch to tonal languages. The present paper shows the results of the research project on the occurrence of absolute pitch among young people in musical education in Poland (1175 pupils, aged 11-29) carried out in the years 2004-2007. The test results (pitch-naming tests) supported by the data from the survey (concerning e.g. musical education, familial aggregation of AP and etc.) are presented in the context of theories which attempt to investigate the source of absolute pitch (especially early musical training theory and genetic factors theory).

The hyperspaces $ANR(ℝ^n)$ and $AR(ℝ^n)$ in $2^{ℝ^n} (n ≥ 3)$ consisting respectively of all compact absolute neighborhood retracts and all compact absolute retracts are studied. It is shown that both have the Borel type of absolute $G_{δσ δ}$-spaces and that, indeed, they are not $F_{σ δσ }$-spaces. The main result is that $ANR(ℝ^n)$ is an absorber for the class of all absolute $G_{δσ δ}$-spaces and is therefore homeomorphic to the standard model space $Ω_3$ of this class.

Assume Z is a continuum and consider the following three conditions: 1) Z is a planar AR; 2) cut points of Z have component number two; 3) any true cyclic element of Z contains at most two cut points of Z. This paper has two distinct parts. Section 1 includes general discussion of the phenomenon of “absolute pitch” (AP), and presentation of various concepts concerning definitions of “full”, “partial” and “pseudo” AP. Sections 2–4 include presentation of the experiment concerning frequency range in which absolute pitch appears, and discussion of the experimental results. The experiment was performed with participation of 9 AP experts selected from the population of 250 music students as best scoring in the pitch-naming piano-tone screening tests. Each subject had to recognize chromas of 108 pure tones representing the chromatic musical scale of nine octaves from E0 to D#9. The series of 108 tones was presented to each subject 60 times in random order, diotically, with loudness level about 65 phon. Percentage of correct recognitions (PC) for each tone was computed. The frequency range for the existence of absolute pitch in pure tones, perceived by sensitive AP possessors stretches usually over 5 octaves from about 130.6 Hz (C3) to about 3.951 Hz (B7). However, it was noted that in a single case, the upper boundary of AP was 9.397 Hz (D9). The split-halves method was applied to estimate the reliability of the obtained results.

One of the distinguishing characteristics of Marguerite Duras’ works is her focus on contradictions, especially in the realm of physicality, which is part of the “dialectic of desire”, a nonverbal pleasure. In the analysed novels: The Sea Wall and The Lover this passion manifests itself through the “rite of passage”. It is a double discovery of one’s own and someone else’s physicality. Duras perceives love as an un-controllable, violent “experiment”, a rebellion against one’s mother and restrictions.Narrating one of the most important (and secret) episodes of her life – crossing the Mekong – the author depicts the sexual initiation of a young heroine (Duras’ alter ego), who seduces a mature man with her behaviour and dress. This experience al-lows her to experience the absolute and become initiated and free. For the narrator it is an opportunity for in-depth analysis of the secular and the sacred aspects of desire. To fully understand the sacred and the profane in Duras’ works, it seems necessary to approach the phenomenon from an interdisciplinary perspective.

The paper is aimed at analyzing the influence of external flow on absolutely unstable modes of a ring jet with recirculation zone. The double ring jet is also considered. The investigation is carried out by means of the linearized, inviscid spatio-temporal stability theory. Calculations are based on the shooting method for asymmetric azimuthal mode. During the numerical experiment, absolutely unstable modes were identified. No major influence of the external stream on the stability of the flow was also proved.
W pracy analizuje się wpływ zewnętrznego przepływu na mody niestabilności absolutnej strugi pierścieniowej ze strefą recyrkulacji oraz podwójnej strugi pierścieniowej. Badania przeprowadzono przy użyciu liniowej, czasowo-przestrzennej teorii stabilności dla przepływów nielepkich. Do rozwiązania zagadnienia brzegowego wykorzystano metody numeryczne bazujące na algorytmie strzałów. W pracy uwzględniono tylko asymetryczne obwodowe mody niestabilności. W trakcie eksperymentu numerycznego zidentyfikowano mody niestabilności absolutnej, nie stwierdzając wpływu zewnętrznego przepływu formującego zarówno strefę recyrkulacji, jak i drugą strugę pierścieniową, na stabilność przepływu.

The author comments on the debate concerning the ideal model of life in the perspective of history and philosophy of religion. Taking as the starting point George Steiner's criticism of the “tyranny of the Absolute” introduced by the monotheistic idea, she sketches an outlook of the sources and character of the tension between religious requirements and the desire for secular life in Christianity and Islam. Already at its beginnings, Islam treated this tension in quite a different way than historical Christianity, stressing the necessity to achieve the ideal state in this world; quite to the contrary, such ideas were contested by early Christians, who claimed that the Kingdom of the Christ is not from this world. As suggested by Bernard Lewis, Muhammad took on the role of Constantine, establishing a different tradition of universal law in which the distinction between public and private affairs is blurred. The modern and postmodern debate on the frontiers of the sacred and the profane is thus treated as a consequence of the historical beginnings of Christianity and Islam, as well as the primary principles with which both religions confronted the Mediterranean world of late Antiquity. The conclusion accentuates both the agonistic and dialogic character of the disagreement concerning the sacred and the profane of Christianity and Islam, treated as essential answers to the same, still pertinent question asked at the end of pagan Antiquity.

When we see in the world the fact that there are many beings, and we indicate that the particular beings exist in a compositional way, we face the task of learning about a new problem: how can we define and determine the relations between beings and between the elements within a being? Although the theory of participation has roots that go back to Plato, and so to a philosophy in which the pluralism of being was rejected and which accepted an identity-based conception of being, participation finds its ontological rational justification only (and ultimately) in the pluralistic and compositional conception of being. With the description of participation as a “descending road” in the cognition of being, we are restricting ourselves to the presentation of how participation is understood in realistic metaphysics (while we shall leave aside the history of the question). We will show the aspects of participation that provide a foundation for wisdom-oriented cognition, and we will show the specific character of participation-oriented cognition as a “descending road.”

Absolute pitch is a unique feature of the auditory memory which makes it possible for its possessors to recognize the musical name (chroma) of a tone. Six musicians with absolute pitch, selected from a group of 250 music students as best scoring in musical pitch-naming tests, identified the chroma of residue pitch produced by harmonic complex tones with several lower partials removed (residual sounds). The data show that the percentage of correct chroma recognitions decreases as the lowest physically existent harmonic in the spectrum is moved higher. According to our underlying hypothesis the percentage of correct chroma recognitions corresponds to the pitch strength of the investigated tones. The present results are compared with pitch strength values derived in an experiment reported by Houtsma and Smurzynski (1990) for tones same as those used in this study but investigated with the use of a different method which consisted in identification of musical intervals between two successive tones. For sounds comprising only harmonics of very high order the new method yields a very low pitch recognition level of about 20% while identification of musical intervals remains stable at a level of about 60%.

Nuclear groups form a class of abelian topological groups which contains LCA groups and nuclear locally convex spaces, and is closed with respect to certain natural operations. In nuclear locally convex spaces, weakly summable families are strongly summable, and strongly summable are absolutely summable. It is shown that these theorems can be generalized in a natural way to nuclear groups.

The article concerns the analysis of the consequences of making further legal transactions with entities which should not be disclosed in public registers due to the invalidity of legal transactions on the basis of which the entry in the public register has been made. As a result of the conducted research it was found that, despite an absolutely invalid deed/founding act, the partnership/company can be disclosed in the National Court Register, and further legal transactions are valid. If the real estate is purchased on the basis of an absolutely invalid legal transaction, disclosure of the purchaser in the second section of the land and mortgage register is not covered by the principle of public credibility of land and mortgage registers. This also applies to the subsequent business real estate trading.
