Opis:
Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) information is required in many communication receivers and their proper operation is, to a large extent, related to the SNR estimation techniques they employ. Most of the available SNR estimators are based on approaches that either require large observation length or suffer from high computation complexity. In this paper, we propose a low complexity, yet accurate SNR estimation technique that is sufficient to yield meaningful estimation for short data records. It is shown that our estimator is fairly close to the (CRLB) for high SNR values. Numerical results also confirm that, in terms of convergence speed, the proposed technique outperforms the popular moment based method, M2M4.

Opis:
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM), stands out among conventional communication technologies, as it uses the indices of the available transmit entities. Thanks to such an approach, it offers a novel method for the transmission of extra data bits. Recent years have seen a great interest in chaos-based communications. The spectrum-spreading signals used in chaotic signal modulation technologies are orthogonal to the existing mixed signals. This paper presents how well a non-coherent differential chaos shift keying communication system performs across an AWGN. Different types of detection methods are simulated, bit error rate and power spectral density are calculated and then compared with standard OFDM with index modulation. The results of simulations concerning the performance of a DCSK system, adding to the security of the proposed solution and offering a comparable bit error rate performance, are presented in the paper as well.

Opis:
In the maritime Very High Frequency (VHF) band, there are no systems for transmitting large amounts of data. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new systems that would modernize the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), significantly relieve the Automatic Identification System’s (AIS) communication channels, and set guidelines for the development of communication infrastructure of the e-Navigation. In line with this, analytical and simulation models of the maritime VHF data transmission communication system using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) modulation are worked out in this paper. The achieved data rate, the spectral efficiency and the bit error rate (BER) represent validation parameters on which the results of the analytical and simulation models are evaluated. It is concluded that the application of the digital OFDM modulation in the maritime VHF band may improve the GMDSS system by achieving higher data rates compared to the current terrestrial mandatory systems for data exchange, i.e. Digital Selective Calling (DSC) and AIS.

Opis:
In this paper, analytical expressions for the distribution of the envelope and phase of linearly modulated signals such as BPSK, M-PSK, and M-QAM in AWGN are presented. We perform numerical simulations for different orders of signal constellations. The results show that the proposed theoretical models are in excellent agreement with the estimated distributions from various numerical experiments.

Opis:
This paper investigates the design of a modified matrix interleaving algorithm as a way to improve the performance of turbo codes. This proposed solution, known as the matrix-dithered golden (MDG) interleaver, utilizes the characteristics of a matrix interleaver combined with the golden section theory. The performance of the proposed interleaving method is compared with that of matrix (M), random (R), and dithered golden (DG) interleavers. The comparison is made in terms of bit error rate (BER), frame error rate (FER), computational complexity, and storage memory requirement. The turbo coded system is implemented and simulated using Matlab/Simulink software. Results of simulations performed both in the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel and the Rayleigh fading channel demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed interleaver. The MDG interleaver is an effective replacement for random interleavers, as it improves BER and FER performance of the turbo code and is also capable of reducing the storage memory requirement without increasing the system’s complexity.

Opis:
Timing and frequency synchronization are the important task in receiver. This paper proposes a timing synchronization and carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation algorithm for orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) downlink in IEEE 802.16e standard. This method has high performance and estimates CFO. The proposed scheme utilizes the conjugate symmetry property of preamble structure. Simulations are conducted for AWGN and multipath channels to demonstrate the performance of the proposed timing metric. Our proposed method can achieve reasonable performance at low SNR.
