Opis:
The main aim of the analysis is to present the area of interest of developmental psychopathology and to answer the question why this domain enables a new perspective in the research on the nature of psychological disorders. After a brief presentation of the history of birth of this new domain and its actual status, it is worthwhile to define the key concepts of developmental psychopathology and to reveal the specificity of its theoretical claims as well as empirical studies. Moreover, the aims of further research were shown. Key words: developmental psychopathology, atypical development, developmental disorders

Opis:
Atypical brain development is a term that can be used to address the full range of developmental disorders that are found to be overlapping much of the time in any sample of children. The authors present ideas that are, in part, a response to the neurodevelopmental disorders and psychomotor, social and speech disorder in children.

Opis:
Although in a majority of cases, autistic children face difficulties communicating verbally, the valid diagnostic classifications do not identify them as the main symptoms of the disorder. The adoption of such a position has been supported by results of (mainly behavioural) research, which imply that language and speech development in the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is extremely variable and individually diversifi ed and the observed delay of its development is not unique to autism. On the other hand, the research conducted by means of neuroimaging methods shows that an atypical structure and activity of Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas, which are important for language processes, exist in the ASD. A weak structural and functional connectivity in the arcuate fasciculus, which connects these structures, has also been discovered. It is assumed that the changes arise from neurodevelopmental irregularities occurring at an early stage of foetal life and their causes are probably genetic. This study characterises speech development disorders and atypical brain development in autism referring to results of both behavioural and neuroimaging research.

Opis:
The article presents and emphasises any early actions and planned activities taken to support the development of children who are in the early stages of development visible symptoms of atypical brain development (ABD). The methods and forms of early therapeutic intervention and its impact on children’s development are discussed on the selected case studies. It should be pointed out that the need for multidisciplinary diagnosis of children and then the consequences of the lack of specialised holistic therapy, which should be implemented are also indicated in the article. What is more, the article presents a proposal for “Therapeutic work program for children with ABD”, containing physical development, visual perception and spatial orientation, speech and thinking development and improvement of reading skills. The above-mentioned program is a good example of supporting the early development of children from infancy period till a primary school period.

Opis:
Background: Assessment of language is very important to detect atypically developed children. In this sense, psycholinguistic abilities are predictors of developmental functioning. The aim of this study was to compare ages of psycholinguistic processes between atypically and typically developed children. Material/Methods: In this cross-sectional study, six-, seven- and eight-year-old children from Cordoba (Argentina) (n= 28) were evaluated with the Spanish version of Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities (S-ITPA). Statistical analysis included Student’s t-test in order to find differences between groups. Results: In the six-year-old sample, those with atypical language showed significantly lower psycholinguistic ages in: global psycholinguistic age, auditory association, and verbal expression, auditory reception, auditory sequential memory, grammatical closu re, and auditory closure, manual expression. In seven-year-old sample differences were found in grammatical closure and auditory closure. In eight-year-old group, atypical language sample showed lower psycholinguistic ages in auditory association, verbal expression and auditory sequential memory. Conclusions: This evidence establishes a limit stage corresponding to 6 years of age, which reflects the consolidation and integrity of language and the aptitudes involved. In later ages (e.g. seven and eight years), results may be biased by acquired formal learning abilities.
