    The end of taboo? – Linguistic and functional view on the Arsch / dupa lexeme in German and Polish phraseology The analysis center includes idiomatic expressions in German and Polish with the Arsch / dupa component. The aim of the analysis is to indicate the catalog of functions that are expressed with this type of idioms and to answer the question whether the analyzed component of idiomatic expressions still exhibits features of vulgarism and is covered with language taboo. Due to the richness of the material and the multiplicity of functions of the lexeme in question which can be pointed out, one can formulate a thesis about a progressive process of taboo removal.

    Niniejsze opracowanie prezentuje rezultaty badania wpływu kursu walutowego Chin na bilans handlowy 41 państw Afryki Subsaharyjskiej w latach 1994–2016. Przy zastosowaniu rozszerzonego modelu grawitacyjnego, pogrupowane i niepogrupowane wyniki badania potwierdzają słuszność podejścia elastycznościowego i absorpcyjnego do bilansu handlowego. Podobnie test wrażliwości, dokonany poprzez podział analizowanego okresu na dwa podokresy (2005–2016 i 1994–2004), potwierdza słuszność podejścia elastycznościowego i absorpcyjnego do bilansu handlowego.
    This study seeks to investigate theimpactof China’sexchange rate onthe trade balance of 41 Sub‑aharan African countries for the period from 1994 to 2016. Using an augmented gravity model, the grouped and ungrouped results of the study confirm the elasticity and absorption approaches of the trade balance. Similarly, the robustness check, by dividing the sample period into two sub‑eriods (2005–016 and 1994–004), also confirms the elasticity and absorption approaches of the trade balance.

    The data were collected by the network of the ASS-500 stations, aimed at the detection and monitoring of the presence and activity concentration of radionuclides in the ground-level air in both normal and emergency situation. Results of the monitoring of radionuclide content in the ground-level atmosphere in Poland during the accident in Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant (FD-NPP) in 2011 are presented. In particular, the results of the measurements cover the period of March–May 2011 focusing on the activity concentration of Cs-137, Cs-136, Cs-134, I-131, I-132 and Te-132. The elevated concentration of radionuclides in the atmosphere was initially detected on 23rd March. The maximum activity concentrations of I-131 – 5.40 mBq/m3 and Cs-137 – 0.73 mBq/m3 were measured on 30th March in Łódź. The ratio of the Cs-134/Cs-137 – 0.82 in Warsaw was calculated for the period 28–30 March. The Fukushima data are compared with the data obtained during the Chernobyl accident and the subsequent period. After the accident in Chernobyl, the maximum measured activity concentration of I-131 reached 180 Bq/m3 on 29th April and Cs-137 – 18 Bq/m3 on 30th April 1986 in Warsaw, however the Cs-134/Cs-137 ratio amounted to 0.49 indicating the presence of the spent fuel of different origin than that of the Fukushima accident. The deposition of the radionuclides from the Fukushima accident does not affect neither Polish people health nor the environment in Poland.

    In this article, the opposition of the “own – alien” in the Russian-language press of the Slavic states is considered. The research is based on the hypothesis assuming the presence of the opposition “own-alien” in media texts, which may be due to mass migrations, frequent acts of terrorism, and complicated political relations between states in the modern world. The article presents ways of manifesting the opposition “own – alien” in media texts and discusses the features of the lexical expression of this opposition.

    The article contains a short description of the integrated on-line radiological monitoring system, which is part of the Aerosol Sampling Stations (ASS-500) and the Permanent Monitoring Stations (PMS) network in Poland. The integrated system has been designed by the Central Laboratory for Radiological Protection and was implemented in Poland in 2000. It allows prompt detection of the presence of artificial radionuclides in the ground-level atmosphere by means of continuous monitoring of the radioactivity collected on a filter.

    Wśród osłów, które występują w tekstach biblijnych, wyjątkowe miejsce zajmuje oślica Balaama. Artykuł podejmuje próbę ukazania funkcji, jaką odgrywa ona w opowiadaniu o pogańskim proroku. Przemawia ona bowiem nie tylko ludzkim głosem, ale też widzi więcej niż sam Balaam, słynny pogański prorok. Znaczenie tego zwierzęcia w narracji o Balaamie zostało przedstawione w kontekście jego codziennej roli w Biblii, a także jako motywu literackiego zarówno w Biblii, jak i w literaturze pozabiblijnej. Zarówno z literatury porównawczej, jak i analizy fragmentu Lb 22,21-35 wynika, że ironia sytuacyjna związana z oślicą i jej zachowaniem ma charakter formy interpretacyjnej przekazu biblijnego. Jej rolą jest wzmocnienie tego przekazu. Słynny pogański widzący zostaje wyśmiany, ten, który ma widzieć, pozostaje ślepy na wolę Bożą. To zwierzę widzi anioła Pańskiego na ścieżce wróżbity, a nie on sam. To oślica trzykrotnie próbuje zatrzymać Balaama, ale ten ją bije, choć była mu zawsze posłuszna. Nie ma wątpliwości, że zachowanie swej oślicy Balaam odbiera jako przejaw jej głupoty i uporu w ścisłym tego słowa znaczeniu. Dopiero interwencja YHWH, który otwiera mu oczy, sprawia, że prorok widzi anioła (Lb 22,21-35). Zawarta w tym opowiadaniu ironia spełniła swoje zadanie. Świadczą o tym między innymi tłumaczenia targumów. Echo tej ironicznej interpretacji znajduje się w Drugim Liście św. Piotra. Autor tego pisma trafnie przypomina rolę oślicy, która „przemówiła ludzkim głosem i powstrzymała głupotę proroka” (2,16).
    Among all the donkeys mentioned in various biblical texts, the she-ass of Balaam occupies a unique position. This essay attempts to show the role which that particular donkey plays in the Balaam story as a whole. The beast not only speaks with a human voice, but also can discern more than this renowned pagan diviner. The function of the she-donkey within the Balaam narrative is found within the context of such an animal's typical role in Scripture, as well as against the background of donkey as a literary motif in both biblical and extrabiblical literature. The comparative study and analysis of Num 22:21-35 attest that the situational irony related to the donkey's behavior represents a special way of projecting the biblical message, ultimately serving to strengthen the underlying idea. The famous heathen seer is mocked as one who, though positioned to perceive supernatural realities, yet remains blind to God revealing himself. While walking the path, it is the she-ass that is able to see the angel of God, and not the supposed soothsayer. It is the donkey that tries to obey to the will of God and to change the course of events. Yet for Balaam, the attitude of his beast is simply a token of the animal’s stupidity and recalcitrance. Balaam himself is able to see the angel only when YHWH finally opens his eyes. The author's deliberate irony achieves the intended goal, which is testified to by the Targumic renderings, among others. This ironic interpretation is echoed in 2 Pet where the author deftly recalls the role of Balaam’s she-ass, who “restrained the prophet’s madness” (2:16).

    The Egyptian artist in the Old and Middle Kingdoms showed great interest in representing the details of the physical characteristics and behaviour of various animals surrounding him in the Egyptian environment. However, donkeys seem to have received less attention from the artist than other animals. The paper examines the representations of donkeys in the wall scenes of the Old and Middle Kingdom tombs, and analyses the changing interest in reflecting this animal’s physical traits and behaviour. Finally, studying the role of donkeys in the so-called livestock counts allows us to better understand the phenomenon which is observed in the iconographic sources from the period under investigation.

    The relatively numerous references to animals in the blessing of Jacob(Gen 49: 1-28) show that the biblical author had a broad knowledge of nature.According to the current classification of living organisms and method ofresearch used by modern zoology, it is stated that these observations donot have the characteristics of scientific research. In spite of this, they arethe evidence of the clear-sighted observation of animals, which is reflectednot only in the knowledge of the appearance of individual species, but alsoof specific behaviours related to their way of life. It concerns not only domesticanimals, like the ass (cf. Gen 49: 14), but also wild representativesof the fauna. References concerning the latter apply to the species perceivedas highly dangerous to man and domestic animals, that is the lion(cf. Gen 49: 9), snake (cf. Gen 49: 17) or wolf (cf. Gen 49: 27). Amongstthe animals mentioned in the blessing of Jacob one can also distinguishthose which aroused admiration because of their appearance, such as thedoe (cf. Gen 49: 21). At the same time, it is essential to emphasise the factthat the wealth of animal metaphors is just a tool used to translate “God’saddress” into human language.

    Opis:
    This paper focuses on the description of a pantomimic spectacle given by Apuleius in the 10th book of his Metamorphoses. Set in a theater in Corinth and narrated by Lucius the ass, this performance relates the story of the judgment of Paris. Lucius, as the viewer of the performance (and, from our perspective, its main teller), styles himself as an objective ‘connoisseur’ of the art of pantomime. Upon a closer look, however, one realizes that he has been absorbed by the scenic illusion and takes it for his own reality. Consequently, despite his penchant for philosophizing, he turns out to be not merely Lucius the ass, but an asinine philosopher, indeed.
