The paper presents major trends in the modern architecture of large database systems. Two types of architecture are described in detail: the parallel architecture and the distributed architecture. It has been widely recognised that centralised, single processor computing systems and centralised database systems in particular are approaching their theoretical limits of performance. Hence we can observe a growing interest among researchers and developers in the design and implementation of highly efficient distributed architecture. The paper focuses on different types of client-server architecture, which nowadays is becoming very popular in data processing systems.

The paper discusses the problem o f meaning in architecture and its relation to style. First, Roman Ingarden’s aesthetic theory is referred to. It is concluded that the architectonic object can be considered a valuable realisation in the sphere o f art only if it combines artistic values with so-called “metaphysical qualities”, i.e. symbolic reference to the ultimate reality. This artistic and metaphysical mission o f architecture is fulfilled primarily by the medieval cathedral regarded as “imitation o f the cathedral that is in heaven”. The beauty o f church based on harmonic proportion symbolises God’s perfection. The main part o f the paper is devoted to discussion o f three original architects: Antonio Gaudi, the representative o f modernism, and postmodern deconstructivists: Frank O. Gehry and Daniel Libeskind. The work o f the “divine architect” Antonio Gaudi is considered as a revival o f gothic tradition, embodied in eclectic and highly decorative style, with its characteristic organicist elements. For Gaudi, architecture consists in the following o f natural principles, thus pointing to God as the creator o f nature. Frank O. Gehry, on the other hand, dismantles and reconstructs architectural forms in a new and shocking way, introducing contrast with the environment. His works may be regarded a purely formal game, thus indicating the decline of meaningful culture. They are considered as Baudrillard’s simulacra, pointing only at themselves. The other o f analysed deconstructivists, Daniel Libeskind, reintroduces the idea o f architecture as a domain o f deeper meanings. His best known masterpiece, the Jewish Museum in Berlin, provides the visitors with an opportunity o f symbolic participation in suffering o f Jews, which is the purpose achieved by architectural means. His works are characterized by a lack o f one univocal meaning; and are open to ever new involvement o f the subject, who is to constitute the meaning within their own aesthetic experience, in the discourse between history and the present.

Opis:
A contemporary European city faces various challenges, and it remains in a permanent state of crisis. The components that create such a situation are subject to change over time. In addition to the existing problems, the inhabitants, authorities, and people involved in designing and transforming the city, including architects, face newchallenges. In recent years, the old problem of a shortage of affordable housing has been coupled with new challenges, including a sudden influx of refugees, climate change and its consequences, and the pandemic. Solutions to these issues are complex and multi-dimensional, and the actions to be taken are of interdisciplinary nature. Prefabricated architecture can be part of these solutions. Prefabricated building technologies, including prefabricated large-panel buildings, modular buildings and mobile structures, can, under appropriate conditions, modernize the process of building new housing. These solutions fit into the idea of sustainable development and can respond to unexpected and dynamically changing circumstances over time (emergency buildings). This paper examines the contemporary urban crisis and possible steps to be taken through the prism of the possibilities offered by the design of prefabricated buildings. The question is what criteria and design strategies should be adopted for prefabricated architecture to meet the demands of a city in crisis? The conducted analyses are universal. Nevertheless, they consider the application of prefabricated solutions in architecture in Poland and the potential for its further development. Therefore, the discussed implementations from the author’s country are given an important role in the text and are shown first against the background of European design practice. Omission of solutions from other continents is a deliberate delimitation.
Współczesne europejskie miasto mierzy się z wieloma problemami i można przyjąć, że pozostaje w permanentnym kryzysie. Składowe ten kryzys tworzące ulegają zmianom w czasie. Do już istniejących problemów dochodzą nowe wyzwania, z którymi zostają skonfrontowani mieszkańcy, zarządcy oraz osoby zaangażowane w projektowanie i przekształcanie miasta, w tym architekci. Do „odwiecznego” problemu jakim jest niedobór dostępnych mieszkań, dołączyły w ostatnich latach nowe wyzwania, w tym m.in. gwałtowany napływ uchodźców, zmiany klimatu i ich konsekwencje oraz pandemia. Rozwiązania tych zagadnień są złożone i wielowątkowe, a podejmowane działania interdyscyplinarne. Architektura prefabrykowana może stanowić część składową tych rozwiązań. Prefabrykowane technologie budowlane, w tym budownictwo wielkopłytowe, modułowe oraz obiekty mobilne pozwalają, przy spełnieniu odpowiednich warunków, usprawnić proces wznoszenia nowych mieszkań, wpisują się w ideę gospodarki cyrkularnej oraz mogą być odpowiedzią na nieoczekiwane i dynamicznie zmieniające się w czasie uwarunkowania (budynki kryzysowe). Niniejszy tekst analizuje współczesny kryzys miasta i możliwe do podjęcia kroki przez pryzmat możliwości jakie daje projektowanie obiektów prefabrykowanych. Stawia pytanie i poszukuje odpowiedzi przy spełnieniu jakich warunków ta architektoniczna „najstarsza nowa idea” może pomóc sprostać wymaganiom współczesności.. Przeprowadzone analizy mają charakter uniwersalny, niemniej jednak uwzględniają zastosowanie rozwiązań prefabrykowanych w architekturze w Polsce oraz potencjał jej dalszego rozwoju. Dlatego też omawiane realizacje z kraju autora zajmują istotne miejsce w tekście i są pokazywane w pierwszej kolejności na tle europejskiej praktyki projektowej. Pominięcie rozwiązań z innych kontynentów jest celową delimitacją.

Prezentowany materiał może być punktem wyjścia dla dalszych opracowań dotyczących znaczenia zmysłów w doborze materiałów do budowy budynków mieszkalnych.
The aim of the study is to pay attention to the issue to the need to look at materials used in architectural and structural design of residential buildings. It is an attempt to find an answer to what architecture of hippiness is. Is space in natural, unaffected way affects on human senses, treating them complementarily, positively tuning without the participation of the analytical part of the brain can affect the human sense of happiness? The presented material can be a starting point for further studies on the importance of the senses in the selection of materials for the construction of residential buildings.

Niniejszy artykuł w szczególny sposób zwraca uwagę, na rolę jaką pełni światło w odbiorze współczesnej architektury. Światło stanowi zasadniczy element kreujący i uwidaczniający piękno architektury, podkreśla jej walory estetyczne i pozwala odczuwać nieograniczoną przestrzeń „całym sobą”. Od zarania dziejów światło w połączeniu z kolorem odgrywało istotną rolę już na etapie projektomania a później jej odbioru. Współcześnie postęp technologiczny i cywilizacyjny przyczynił się do zwiększenia roli światła i koloru umożliwiając zastosowania ich już momentu projektowania. Wzrastające oczekiwania wobec architektów spowodowały intensyfikację zjawiska, która coraz częściej wyrażana jest realizacjami przepełnionymi światłem i kolorem.
This article investigates the role of light in the perception of contemporary architecture. Light is an essential element that creates and reveals the beauty of architecture, emphasizes its aesthetic values, and allows us to feel the unlimited space „with one’s whole self”. Since time immemorial, light in combination with colour has played an important role at the design stage and later in its reception. Nowadays, technological and civilization progress has contributed to the increase in the role of light and color, enabling their application already at the moment of design. Increasing expectations towards architects have led to an intensification of the phenomenon, which is increasingly expressed in projects filled with light and colour.

The article discusses the architectural expression of houses built on water, based on the design process of the floating house in the Czerniakowski Port in Warsaw, designed by Mai Bui Ngoc and Rafał Mazur. The question of the form of the floating house was the starting point of the work on this project. Usually buildings are designed in a specific location, which gives architects an inspiration for the design of the new form. In the case of the floating houses the goal was to make a universal artefact as a car or a phone. This artefact should be more connected to the owner than to the landscape. This artefact should be also neutral to the landscape and it should not be destructive for the surroundings. The answer lays between two archetypes; a typical house and a boat. Analysis of the existing floating houses gave the conclusion that authors of these houses were usually very close to one of these two archetypes. It is a need to put a lot of effort to design an object which does not remind a real house and a yacht design.

The article deals with the issue of solar facades as the main external walls of a building, adapted to make use of solar energy. The aim of the article is to define the role of the facades and the factors that influence shaping thereof. The goal is of cognitive nature, whereas its implementation may contribute to strengthening the relationship between presumptions related to energy and architecture in the design of buildings. The need for the article results from the necessity to search for a possible balance between technical and humanistic spheres while shaping contemporary pro-ecological architecture, especially one aimed at receiving solar energy as a renewable energy source. In the article, both analytical and comparative methods are applied. The research was conducted on the example of four designs with solar facades of different characteristics, including two buildings planned by the author. The research results are observations that define relationship between the energy-related role of solar facades and urban, functional and aesthetic issues. These observations lead to the conclusion that the energy aspect, is not the only one to be considered while shaping solar facades in contemporary architecture. The solar facade combines both functional and artistic features.

The article is a reflection on fashion in architecture. It is a presentation of an ambivalent nature of this phenomenon, which accompanies the design process since the beginning of the civilization. For examples of recent decades, the fashion is shown as an enrichment development of architecture and as an element that often takes control of imagination of the architects.

W 1969 roku miała miejsce XXIV Sesja Generalna ONZ na temat aktualnego stanu środowiska na świecie. Raport U. Thanta ostrzegał przed postępującą degradacją natury. Konieczna stała się zmiana systemu wartości. Od lat 70 ochrona przyrody jest priorytetem. Rozpoczęła się era budownictwa zrównoważonego, w którym słońce odgrywa kluczową rolę. Celem artykułu jest przypomnienie istotności słońca w kształtowaniu architektury na przestrzeni wieków, oraz próba oceny jego ważności w przyszłości budownictwa.
In 1969, the XXIV UN General Session on the current state of the world’s environment took place. U. Thant’s report warned against the ongoing degradation of nature. It was necessary to change the system of values. Nature protection has been a priority since the 1970s. The era of sustainable building has begun, in which the sun plays a key role. The aim of the article is to remind the significance of the sun in shaping architecture over the centuries, and an attempt to evaluate its validity in the future of construction.

W artykule podjęto próbę analizy przejawów współczesnej fascynacji architekturą japońską na Zachodzie. Celem badawczym było wyodrębnienie cech współczesnej architektury japońskiej odpowiadających poszukiwanej dziś nowej tożsamości architektury Zachodu. Jako metodę badawczą przyjęto analizę tekstów krytycznych wraz z analizą wybranych realizacji architektonicznych powstałych od końca XX w. do dziś, sporadycznie odnosząc się do opracowań i przykładów wcześniejszych. Określono podstawowe założenia pracy oraz zarysowano historię kulturowych przepływów między Japonią a Zachodem w drugiej połowie XIX w. i w wieku XX jako tło dla współczesnych odniesień Zachodu do architektury Japonii. Określono cechy/kategorie przestrzeni wspólne dla tradycyjnej japońskiej architektury i współczesnej zachodniej myśli filozoficznej oraz wskazano je w projektach Kengo Kumy, SANAA i Jun’yi Ishigamiego. We wnioskach podano cechy architektury japońskiej, korespondujące z kształtowanym dziś nowym paradygmatem architektury Zachodu.
The article attempts to analyze the symptoms of a contemporary fascination with Japanese architecture in the West. The research goal was to distinguish the features of contemporary Japanese architecture that correspond to the new identity of Western architecture that is currently being sought. The method of research was the analysis of critical texts with the analysis of selected architectural realizations created from the end of the 20th century until today, sporadically referring to earlier studies and examples. The basic assumptions of the work were defined, the history of cultural flows between Japan and the West in the second half of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries was outlined as a background for the contemporary Western references to Japanese architecture. The features / categories of space in traditional Japanese architecture and contemporary Western philosophical thought were specified and indicated in the projects of Kengo Kuma, Sanaa and Jun’ya Ishigami. The conclusion provide the features of Japanese architecture that correspond to the new paradigm of Western architecture that is being formed today.

It is undoubtful that the Italian Renaissance, understood as the totality of phenomena associated with the concept of the revival of antiquity, had a huge impact on European culture. Simultaneously, there is no question that the development of the revival idea on the Apennine Peninsula was different than in the rest of Europe, north of the Alps. These differences resulted primarily, but not exclusively, from the firm establishment and influence of medieval traditions. The contrast between north and south of Europe was particularly visible in church architecture and in the, newly emerging, artistic one. Artists and art theorists of the Apennine Peninsula were generally oriented towards the reception of ancient forms (or ones considered to be antique), but were usually critical towards Gothic architecture, identified as a foreign German style (maniera tedesca). On the other hand, in north-of-the-Alps Europe, late-medieval architecture was often perceived as an element shaping one’s own identity. In case of some countries, such as Germany or France, it was even associated with the “national” heritage, which however was not in contradiction with the reception of the Italian forms all’antica. This reception usually proceeded twofold; either it was a direct “transfer” of Italian Renaissance patterns, or their compilation with the Gothic style. This dualistic approach also characterized the architecture of the early modern Polish Republic. Moreover, it is already recorded at the initial stage of the reception of Renaissance forms in Poland. The goal of this thesis is to outline the problem of “the memory of Middle Ages” in the sacral buildings of Italian architects in the 16th c. Poland, defined as the problem of the influence of medieval traditions. The attempt to answer the questions about the factors influencing the retrospective dimension of the works of these artists takes into consideration recent research results, as they allow to phrase an innovative hypothesis about the special influence that the medieval tradition of the Apennine Peninsula had on mentioned works. Moreover, the hypothesis is also encouraged by the conclusions presented in the preliminary research results.

The aim of this presentation is to demonstrate issues concerning places of remembrance, paying special attention to the elements which create meaning and structure collective experience. The analysis will be conducted not only on the level of architectural materials but the current knowledge about psychology of perception (narrative perception) will also be included. Another aim of the presentation is to assess Polish current architectural projects against the background of international accomplishments. Projects implemented by students from Warsaw University of Technology Faculty of Religious and Monumental Architecture under the management of professor Konrad Kucza-Kuczyński will be presented. The presentation is intended for young scientists of different branches, not only those of architecture and construction.The presentation constitutes part of post-doctoral paper written under Dean’s Grant at the Faculty of Architecture at Warsaw University of Technology in 2011.

There is an interesting yet forgotten work of Egyptianizing architecture situated on the premises of a vast park-palace complex in Konskie (a city in central Poland, between Kielce and Opoczno). It is an orangery/hothouse (54,75 x 7,25 m) that was built in the years 1825-1830 on commission for Stanislaw and Anna Malachowski, the owners of the property at that time. The creator of the building was Francesco Maria Lanci (1799-1875), a young Italian architect who had been invited to develop the palace complex. Following that commission, Lanci spent the rest of his career in Poland, where he created numerous neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance works. Using a knowledge of the basic forms of Egyptian architecture that he drew from French treatises written after Napoleon's expedition to Egypt, Lanci employed monumental pylons, statues of Memnons in niches, composite capitals, cavetto cornices, a winged sun disc and masks derived from transformed Hathor capitals. In many places he also designed pseudo-hieroglyphic inscriptions. It may be presumed that the investor demanded such Egyptian forms, since Stanislaw Malachowski (1770-1849) was strongly involved with the Freemasons after 1790. The orangery in Konskie is quite well preserved (with a style-less annex added on the northern side in 1969), but neglected, and surely demands the thoughtful care of a conservator.

Opis:
Kinematics has accompanied architecture from its beginning and is strongly associated with its evolution. Over the centuries, it has changed form and function. However, its rank grew at the beginning of the 20th century. Along with the widespread change of the design method in the early 90s of the twentieth century, its forms have become more complex. The study showed that with the development of design techniques, this time should be treated as a breakthrough in the design of kinematic architecture.
Kinematyka towarzyszyła architekturze od jej początków i jest silnie związana z jej ewolucją. Na przestrzeni wieków ruch zmieniał swoją formę i funkcję. Jego znaczenie wzrosło jednak dopiero na początku XX wieku, kiedy wraz z nowymi teoriami przestrzennymi oraz ewolucją sztuki przestał być traktowany wyłącznie w kategoriach użytkowych. Wraz ze zmianą sposobu projektowania na początku lat 90 XX wieku jego formy stały się bardziej złożone. W pracy wykazano, że ten czas należy traktować jako przełomowy w projektowaniu architektury kinematycznej.

W artykule przedstawiono badanie nowoczesnych kierunków architektury, które wynikają z wprowadzenia do projektowania zaawansowanych technologii informatycznych oraz poglądów filozoficznych i estetycznych. Wykazano, że na przełomie lat 60. i 70. w architekturze pojawiły się nowe, awangardowe kierunki, które doprowadziły do przezwyciężenia tradycji modernizmu i minimalizmu i stały się nowym międzynarodowym „językiem” architektury, nadającym się dla różnych warunków naturalnych, kulturowych i historycznych.
This article investigates the current directions of architecture that result from the introduction of advanced information technology, philosophical and aesthetic ideas to the design. It is shown that at the turn of 1960-1970s in architecture there appeared new avantgarde trends, that led to overcoming of modernism and minimalism traditions and became the new international language of architecture, suitable for a variety of natural, cultural and historical conditions.

In order to effectively carry out digital transformation of the state is necessary to use the correct methodology tools. One of the tools to support the conduct of this transition can be a state enterprise architecture. This article attempts to define this concept and presents the author’s metamodel allowing for uniform application of the concepts used for architectural diagrams. This makes it possible to build a consistent description of the state in terms of architecture.
W celu efektywnego przeprowadzenia cyfrowej transformacji państwa niezbędne jest zastosowanie odpowiedniego aparatu metodycznego. Jednym z narzędzi wspierających przeprowadzenie tej transformacji może być architektura korporacyjna państwa. W artykule podjęto próbę zdefiniowania tego pojęcia oraz zaprezentowano autorski metamodel pozwalający na jednolite stosowanie pojęć używanych na diagramach architektonicznych. Dzięki temu możliwe jest zbudowanie spójnego opisu państwa w ujęciu architektonicznym.

Architektura modernistyczna wyrosła na gruncie możliwości stosowania nowych materiałów konstrukcyjnych i powszechnej krytyce stylów historycznych. Rozwój współczesnej architektury w Kielcach odpowiada tendencjom rozwojowym w architekturze w Polsce i w Europie. Aby scharakteryzować oblicza architektury współczesnej w Kielcach, autor skupił się na wybranych przykładach obiektów najbardziej charakterystycznych i wartościowych. Zaprezentowany obraz architektury współczesnej Kielc świadczy o jej zróżnicowaniu i dużych walorach. W tkance miasta znajdują się znaczące obiekty architektury modernistycznej i postmodernistycznej.
