In this study white mustard (Sinapis alba) plants were allowed to grow in earthen pots, treated with municipal solid waste compost (MSWC) to study the effect of MSWC on the plant biomass production. Twenty-one days from the establishment of the experiment sprouts and the number of growing plants occurring in the earthen pots were counted. Plants growing in the earthen pots with the compost samples exhibited an increasing plant biomass while no changes were observed in their appearance; retarded growth or necrotic changes were not recorded. The performed phytotoxicity tests show that the analyzed composts produced in the composting plant situated on the landfill surface achieved high percentages of the germinating capacity of white mustard (Sinapis alba) seeds and can be therefore used in the subsequent reclamation of the concerned landfill.

Opis:
The aim of the present study was the estimation of the phytotoxicity of soils amended with sewage sludge with relation to Sinapis alba L. The study was realized in the system of a plot experiment. Two kinds of sewage sludge: dewatered and anaerobically stabilized sludge with dry matter content of about 24%, and dewatered sludge “Palikal” with dry matter content of about 92%. The results indicate that the tested samples are toxic. Growth inhibition at the studied samples ranged from 70.45% to 100%.

Background. The number of species suitable for late summer sowing as catch crops intended for mulching soil is insufficient. It has been hypothetically assumed that oat (Avena sativa L.) may be an alternative to white mustard (Sinapis alba L.) that is commonly grown for this purpose. The aim of this study was to compare the yield and nitrogen accumulation of oat and white mustard planted as catch crops at different late summer dates, and the effect of mulch from these plants on spring barley (Hordeum sativum L.) yield. Material and methods. In the period from 2011 to 2013, oat and white mustard were sown separately on August 15 and September 1 and 15. No nitrogen fertilization was used for the catch crops. At the end of October, dry matter accumulation and nitrogen accumulation were determined. Photographic documentation of the mulch coverage of the soil was made. Over a 3-year period (2012–2014), spring barley was grown after the oat and mustard mulch. Plant density and grain yield of the barley was determined. Results. Delaying the sowing date resulted in a decrease in catch crop dry matter accumulation, on average for both species, from 2.36 to 0.61 Mg·$ha^(-1)$, and in nitrogen accumulation from 45.4 to 30.3 kg·$ha^(-1)$. Differences in biomass and nitrogen accumulation, in favor of mustard, were associated with the earliest sowing date only. Oat plants did not lose leaves in winter and thus provided greater soil cover than mustard plants. These species cultivated as a catch crop and used for mulch did not differ in their effect on plant density or spring barley yield. Conclusion. In crop rotations with a large proportion of cruciferous plants, oat may replace white mustard to capture residual N and to mulch the soil, however its sowing date should not be later than the beginning of September.
Liczba gatunków przydatnych do uprawy w międzyplonie z późnoletniego siewu i przeznaczonych do mulczowania gleby jest niewielka. Hipotetycznie założono, że alternatywą dla powszechnie uprawianej na te cele gorczycy białej (Sinapis alba L.) może być owies (Avena sativa L.). Celem badań było porównanie plonów i akumulacji azotu przez owies i gorczycę białą wysiewane w różnych późnoletnich terminach oraz wpływ mulczu z tych roślin na plonowanie jęczmienia jarego (Hordeum sativum L.). W latach 2011–2013 owies i gorczyca biała były wysiewane 15 sierpnia oraz 1 i 15 września. Pod zasiewy międzyplonów nie stosowano nawożenia azotowego. W końcu października oznaczono plony oraz pobranie azotu. Opóźnianie terminu siewu skutkowało spadkiem plonu suchej masy, średnio dla obu gatunków z 2.36 do 0.61 Mg·$ha^(-1)$ oraz pobraniem azotu z 45.4 do 30.3 kg·$ha^(-1)$. Różnice w plonach i pobraniu azotu na korzyść gorczycy stwierdzono tylko w przypadku najwcześniejszego siewu. W latach 2012–2014 po mulczu z owsa i gorczycy uprawiano jęczmień jary. Oznaczono obsadę roślin i plony ziarna. Oba gatunki uprawiane jako międzyplon z przeznaczeniem na mulcz nie miały wpływu na obsadę roślin i plony jęczmienia jarego. W zmianowaniach z dużym udziałem roślin kapustowatych owies może zastępować gorczycę białą, zwłaszcza przy przeznaczeniu do produkcji mulczu. Termin siewu owsa nie powinien być późniejszy niż 1 września.

Opis:
Every year, scaling plants buy (up to tens of tons) cones which needs to be peeled. After the process of scaling, the cones themselves are waste, which is partly sold. The problem of waste disposal is especially severe in plants where the processing is performed by electrically-powered scaling cabinets, but the problem does not apply to facilities where pellets are burned to produce heat. We examined the heat of combustion and calorific value of the residues from scaling plants that can be used in the production of refined wood fuels. The residues consist of the empty cones of pine, spruce, larch as well as husks and stems of silver fir. Additionally, we conducted measurements of the heat of combustion for wood and cones of each species and compared them to their respective calorific values The results revealed that the average calorific value of the cones is in the range 17.81–19.86 MJ/kg. Our work showed that empty cones have a significantly higher calorific value and heat of combustion than the wood of spruce, larch and fir. In the case of pine, cones and wood did not differ significantly. These results led us to the conclusions that empty de-scaled cones can be utilized as a valuable primary solid fuel or fuel additive for the production of refined products for the local market. Due to the low annual production of cones in comparison to other materials such as sawdust and wood chips, pine cones should be used as a supplement, to enrich fuels of inferior quality by enhancing their energetic properties.

This study aimed at determining the shape of closed silver fir cones from the Jawor Forest District (Wroclaw), based purely on measurements of their length and thickness. Using these two parameters, the most accurate estimations were achieved with a fourth-degree polynomial fitting function. We then calculated the cones’ surface area and volume in three different ways: 1) Using the fourth-degree polynomial shape estimation, 2) Introducing indicators of compliance (k1, k2, k3) to calculate the volumeand then comparing it to its actual value as measured in a pitcher filled with water, 3) Comparing the surface area of the cones as calculated with the polynomial function to the value obtained from ratios of indicators of compliance (ratios k4 and k5).We found that the calculated surface area and volume were substantially higher than the corresponding measured values. Test values of cone volume and surface area as calculated by our model were 8% and 5% lower, respectively, compared to direct measurements. We also determined the fir cones apparent density to be 0.8 g·cm-3on average. The gathered data on cone surface area, volume and bulk density is a valuable tool for optimizing the thermal peeling process in mill cabinets to acquire high quality seeds.

This study was conducted on a batch of closed silver fir cones from Jawor Forest District and a mixture of scales from the seed extraction facility Grotniki. The scales were divided into three size classes corresponding to the bottom, middle and upper part of the cones and their area was measured with the Multi Scan Base v.18.03 software. Based on the sum of the inner and outer surface area of all scales, we then determined the total area of evaporation from the cones. In addition, the area of protruding scales was measured for differently sized scales from different parts of the cones. Previous studies have shown that the average outer surface of a closed cone, calculated as the sum of protruding scales, accounts for 10% of the outer surface of an open cone. Pictures of both scale surfaces with the internal seed bed and the external protrusions were taken using a scanning electron microscope. We noticed significant differences in dimension and shape of the channels and trichomes on the scale surface. On the inner side of the scales, we found a high diversity of trichomes of different lengths, whilst the outer side contained channels. Presumably, these characteristics affect the rate of water loss from the cones during desiccation and separation of the seed. In-depth knowledge on the evaporative surfaces of fir cones and scale structure will be helpful for optimizing the industrial processes of seed extraction.

Condition of epistomatal wax on the abaxial surface of the current and previous-year needles of damaged silver fir trees (Abies alba Mill.), both from the polluted Risnjak and "clean" Donja Dobra sites in Gorski Kotar region, both influenced by pollutants coming from Europe, during two years, three times a year, were examined with Scanning Electron Microscope. In the course of time the wax tubules on the epistomatal rims of stomata in polluted, but also in "clean" needles surface, become fused and agglomerated rapidly to various extents of morphologically different types of amorphous wax crusts, primarily compact and particulate ones. This process begins very early, especially in polluted Risnjak site, and may be interpreted as a possible result of air pollution. However, the recrystalization, or production of new tubules, also appears relatively quickly in mostly cases. Quantitative estimations indicate a very large total amount of amorphous wax crusts in the current-year needles, and a very high percentage of the same wax in previous-year needles. Amorphous wax crusts cover stomatal pores, as well as the rims, disturbing the normal gas exchange. Statistically there is a signicant tendency of increase in wax degradation in the needles of the polluted site in comparison with those of the unpolluted one, but there is an insignificant wax degradation among the needles of damaged trees within each site. These results confirmed most of the research done in our preliminary report.

The research was conducted with a view to establishing physiological parameters of the silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) with regard to germination energy, absolute germination and genetic overload produced by silver fir populations. The intention was to identify significant variability within populations and subpopulations, or rather within the two combined, and to give recommendations on the usage and usability of seeds from specific populations. The results form a basis for establishing silver fir genetic overload within five fir populations of central Bosnia and Herzegovina. The results of research on the characteristics such as absolute seed weight, germination energy and absolute germination are within a scope of previous studies. The studied physiological characteristics of silver fir seeds in the central Bosnia area showed distinct individual and inter-population variability when compared to variability of the subpopulations analyzed. The inclusion of non-physiological data (height, DBH, age and the presence of mistletoe) concerning sampled trees proved to be effective new quality of research. No correlation was found between DBH and seed physiological characteristics but increased tree height had a positive effect on seed quality in terms of absolute germination and growth, proportional to tree height. This in turn shows that seeds should be collected only from trees of above average height, because they are less genetically overloaded. The characteristics of healthy but ungerminated seeds from less tall trees displayed lower parameter values, also indicating that seeds should be collected from taller than average trees only. The presence of mistletoe had a very interesting effect of increasing rotten seeds percentage, and therefore reducing seed quality. Accordingly, seed collection should be limited to trees not affected by mistletoe, however further research on this aspect is required.

Opis:
The effectiveness of different peat-based substrates was compared for the propagation of two mountain tree species (silver fir and European beech). The experiment was set up in spring of 2006, and seedlings were grown in polystyrene multipots for 2 years. Four types of substrate were applied: (1) newly prepared 1:1 peat-sawdust mixture ; (2) a peat-sawdust mixture which had already been used for five production periods; (3) a peat substrate produced in the ‘Nêdza’ container nursery (Rudy Raciborskie Forest District), consisting of peat and perlite; (4) a peat substrate, as described for (3), with added mycorrhizal fungus Hebeloma crustuliniforme. After sowing, polystyrene multi-pots were placed in a transparent tent. During the autumns of 2006 and 2007, for both species and each substrate type, 25 seedlings were randomly selected for measurement of their above-ground height, root length, root collar diameter, above- and below-ground fresh weight. Growth of one-year old and two-year-old seedlings of both species differed depending on their substrate. The application of a mycorrhizal inoculum positively affected seedling establishment, since the best height growth and largest seedlings of both species were grown on substrate (4). The growth of one-year-old fir seedlings in the ‘old’ peat and sawdust mixture (2) was similar to those seedlings on the turf substrate (3). Root:shoot allocation differed among the substrates. In fir root:shoot allocation was approximately equivalent at 1:0.9, whereas for beech it was 1:2 in oneyear-old seedlings and 1:1.5 in two-year-old seedlings.

The present article, though far from being exhaustive, makes a contribution to support the standpoint, expressed by many researchers, that there is the growing need for an inclusion of elements of paleography to studies on the history of the Polish language. The article should be viewed as an attempt at an examination of the graphical and linguistic properties of the text under scrutiny (libri iuris civilis or alba civilia of the city of Poznan from the years 1575–1793) that constitutes onomastic material excerpted from historical sources. The present article demonstrates typical characteristics of linguistic features of the document; diversity of the texts is highlighted, writing ductus instantiated in the flow of writing the text is discusses, as well as individual styles of handwriting and the tendency of the city’s scribes to differentiate letters and signs graphically (multifunctionality of signs, the influence of non-Polish handwriting styles, abbreviations).
