Opis:
Every material found in nature has a specific feature of the radioactivity. Depending on the degree of radioactivity, radioactivity effects are detrimental to human health. The use of these materials in the areas of human life can affect human health. Degree of radioactivity of these materials should be determined and usability of theirs should be controlled in buildings. In this study, determinations of natural radioactivity in aggregates used for construction were examined. As varieties of the aggregate of the region of Western Mediterranean: barite, olivine, tuff, aggregate, pumice, and andesite for the measurement of natural radioactivity was obtained. Materials were ground before they were used to determination of radioactivity and chemical analysis experiments. Of the powderized materials, by gamma-spectroscopic method there were carried out measurements of natural radioactivity in the Institute of Nuclear Sciences, Ege University. Degrees of natural radioactivity of materials that can be used as aggregate obtained from Western Mediterranean region were determined. The degree of radioactivity was compared with the values specified in the standards, the results were compared.

Opis:
Magnetic susceptibility, radioactivity and mineralogical characterization are performed on 40 sediment samples collected from the Ponnaiyar river, Tamilnadu, to establish a possible link between the enhanced concentration of anthropogenic magnetic particles, radionuclides and minerals. Higher magnetic susceptibility values (> 150 × $10^{-8} m^3$/kg) are observed in last 100 km of the river. However, some elevated values are also observed in first 100 km. Frequency dependence of magnetic susceptibility is calculated to understand the magnetic grain variations which are presented and discussed. The average activity concentration of radionuclides ($\text{}^{238}U,$ $\text{}^{232}Th$ and $\text{}^{40}K$) falls within the typical world and Indian average values although some extreme values are determined. To assess the radiological hazard of river sediments, radiological hazard indices such as absorbed dose rate, annual effective dose equivalent, radium equivalent, hazard indices ($H_{ex}$, $H_{in}$, Iγ, I and excess lifetime cancer risk) are calculated which shows below the internationally recommended values. The relative distribution of major minerals is determined by calculating extinction coefficient. Correlation analysis is carried out between the parameters obtained from radioactivity analysis and other analyses to know the existing relations. Obtained correlations are discussed and suggest that the natural radioactivity level and magnetic susceptibility of the present sediments is mainly controlled by clay content.

Opis:
The possibility has been investigated of determining, using graydar (Gamma RAY Detection And Ranging) approach, the in-depth partial-density profile of some substance absorbed in a dense medium. Analytical algorithms have been derived for retrieving the in-depth profile of the partial density of the absorbed substance on the basis of the conjecturally known in-depth profile of the extinction of the absorbing medium and the experimentally determinable graydar profile. The retrieval error under the Poisson noise conditions has also been estimated analytically. The simulations performed of the Poisson-noise effect concern the case of soil moisture. The results obtained confirm the validity of the derived retrieval algorithms and error estimates and show that the soil moisture profile may be accurately determined to depths of 50 cm, depending on the dry-soil bulk density, the sensing photon flux, and the measurement time.
