Opis:
To determine the impact of an oxidizing Ar-H₂-H₂O/air dual atmosphere on the kinetics and mechanism of oxidation of the Crofer 22APU steel as compared to oxidation in a single atmosphere (Ar-H₂-H₂O or air), the oxidation kinetics of this steel were investigated both in single and dual reaction atmospheres at 1073 K during 100, 250, 500, and 1000 h of oxidation. Detailed morphological observations and the results of chemical composition analyses carried out using transmission electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed the presence of Fe in the scale formed on the cathode side in the dual atmosphere. Based on morphological observations (scanning- and transmission electron microscopies) and chemical and phase composition analyses (energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively) of the products of oxidation of the Crofer 22APU steel, and on the determined oxidation kinetics, a mechanism describing scale growth on both sides of the steel during its oxidation in conditions involving a gradient of the chemical potential of oxygen and hydrogen was proposed.

Opis:
The aim of this study was the application of tomographic techniques (focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) to qualitative and quantitative characterization of structural elements in T/P92 creep resistant 9% Cr steel, Allvac 718Plus Ni-based superalloy and W-based alloy - multiphase materials for environmentally friendly power plants exposed to extreme operational conditions. The study showed that tomography techniques permit to obtain complementary information about microstructural features (precipitates size, shape and their spatial distribution) in the reconstructed volume with comparison to conventional particle analysis methods, e.g. quantitative transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy metallography.

The diagonal and non-diagonal parts for the Debye-Waller factor have been established using equation of motion technique of quantum dynamics and the Dyson equation approach. The double time temperature dependent phonon Green function has been taken to find the phonon linewidth and phonon shift. Renormalized mode frequency has been investigated in terms of electron-phonon coupling constant and temperature. The effect of electron-phonon interaction on the Debye-Waller factor has been studied in low temperature limit in low impurity concentration in semiconductor crystals.

Opis:
In the present work neutron diffraction has been applied for ex situ investigation of residual stresses in Mg-4%Al-1%Ca (AX41) magnesium alloy reinforced with short Saffil fibers. Samples were deformed in compression at room temperature. Two types of fiber arrangement were investigated. In both samples the fibers were homogeneously distributed and arranged in parallel planes with a random fiber orientation. In the first sample these planes were parallel with the loading axis and in the second one they were perpendicular to the loading direction. Significant dependence of both the mechanical properties and residual strains on the fibers orientation was observed. Sample with parallel fiber arrangement showed higher hardness and lower ductility. Further the increment of residual tensile lattice strain in the matrix with a macroscopic deformation is much higher than in the other case. It was found that the residual strain evolution strongly depends on the orientation of grains in the matrix.

Opis:
The results of the elemental and chemical composition analysis of human medical samples (blood, serum, hair, urine, tooth, kidney stones, gallstones) and environmental samples (slag, cereal, vegetables, flour, pork bones, pork meat, fish) are presented. The analysis were performed by application of the total reflection X-ray fluorescence, wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence and X-ray powder diffraction methods. With X-ray fluorescence methods the following elements were identified: O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Se, Br, Rb, Sr, Zr, I, Ba, and Pb, whose concentrations were from a few ng/g to tens of percent. For some samples the elemental analysis was extended by X-ray powder diffraction measurements. With this method the chemical composition was determined. In the paper the experimental setups, methodology of samples preparation and methods of carrying out the measurements are described. As an example the X-ray spectra registered for gallstone sample are discussed in detail. Finally, the results of X-ray diffraction and elemental analysis for selected medical and environmental samples are summarized.

Opis:
Hydrothermal synthesis of hydroxyapatite (HA) is a method which is relatively easy to apply and enables HA precipitation on substrates of various shapes, which is vital to endoprostheses fabrication. Anodic oxidation facilitates HA precipitation, making the coating thicker and more uniform. In this paper the influence of anodic oxidation of titanium substrates on HA precipitation in hydrothermal synthesis is discussed. To determine chemical composition and coating uniformity of anodised and polished Ti substrates the Raman microspectroscopy was employed. The composition was also confirmed using X-ray diffraction method. HA coatings on Ti after anodic oxidation exhibit higher uniformity in comparison to untreated Ti. The X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the HA coating was partly amorphous. Also influence of additional treatment (soaking in NaOH and/or HBSS) after anodic oxidation is discussed in the present paper. It seems that pretreatment may be favourable in some cases, but if the anodic oxidation was conducted in the presence of calcium phosphates the pretreatment seems to prevent the HA precipitation.

The advent of free electron lasers opens up new opportunities to probe the dynamics of ultrafast processes and the structure of matter with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution. New methods inaccessible with other known types of radiation sources can be developed, resulting in a breakthrough in deep understanding the fundamentals of life as well as in numerous medical and biological applications. In the present work the properties of free electron laser radiation that make the sources excellent for probing biological matter at an arbitrary wavelength, in a wide range of intensities and pulse durations are briefly discussed. A number of biophysical and biomedical applications of the new sources, currently considered among the most promising in the field, are presented.

Newly constructed 4th generation sources of intense synchrotron radiation in ultrafast pulses of only 10-50 fs and wavelengths up to X-rays, the free electron lasers, are expected to revolutionize development of biological science. To take full advantage of unique properties of the sources, new imaging techniques of molecular and microscopic biological objects are developed. Present article provides a short review of a stormy development of bioimaging with incoming soon 4th generation synchrotron radiation X-ray sources. Some implications for the future of new sources and techniques are discussed as well.

Opis:
Important bioinorganic objects, both living and fossilized are as a rule characterized by a complex microscopic structure. For biological samples, the cell-like and laminar as well as growth ring structures are among most significant. Moreover, these objects belong to a now widely studied category of biominerals with composite, inorganic-organic structure. Such materials are composed of a limited number of inorganic compounds and several natural organic polymers. This apparently simple composition leads to an abnormal variety of constructions significant from the medical (repairs and implants), natural (ecological effectiveness) and material science (biomimetic synthesis) point of view. The analysis of an image obtained in an optical microscope, optionally in a scanning electron microscope is a topographical reference for further investigations. For the characterization of the distribution of chemical elements and compounds in a material, techniques such as X-ray, electron- or proton microprobes are applied. Essentially, elemental mappings are collected in this stage. The need for the application of an X-ray diffraction microprobe is obvious and our experience indicates on the necessity of using the synchrotron-based devices due to their better spatial resolution and good X-ray intensity. To examine the presence of the organic compounds, the Raman microprobe measurements are good options. They deliver information about the spatial distribution of functional groups and oscillating fragments of molecules. For the comprehensive investigation of bioinorganic material structural and chemical features, we propose the following sequence of methods: optical imaging, elemental mapping, crystallographic mapping, organic mapping and micromechanical mapping. The examples of such an approach are given for: petrified wood, human teeth, and an ammonite shell.

The nanostructure and thermal behaviour of liquid crystalline oligoester were examined by combination of real-time synchrotron small-angle and wide-angle X-ray scattering methods with differential scanning calorimetry. The synthesized oligoester exhibits ability to form a thermotropic mesophase. It was shown that solid crystalline state is observed in the temperature range 25 to 123ºC and liquid crystalline state between 118-156ºC. The transition temperature determined from dynamic small-angle and wide-angle X-ray scattering experiments agrees very well with the results obtained from differential scanning calorimetry.
