Opis:
In the present studies the phase structure and magnetic ordering of magnetite nanoparticles were investigated. The powder samples were obtained by co-precipitation from Fe(III) and Fe(II) salts. SiO₂ coating was performed using the modified Stöber process. X-ray diffraction studies revealed presence of the only one Fe₃O₄ crystalline phase both for the non-coated and SiO₂-coated samples. The Mössbauer studies have shown differences in shapes of measured spectral lines for Fe₃O₄ particles subjected to the Stöber process and non-coated particles. The heating efficiency was measured for glycerol dispersed nanoparticles. The analysis have shown changes in specific loss power depending on the concentration of the nanoparticles and amplitude of alternating magnetic field.

Opis:
We have applied the method of dynamic light scattering to analyse the lysozyme-ethanol interaction. For low ethanol concentration (below 4.3% (v/v)) no chemical denaturation process is observed. When the ethanol concentration grows above the triggering concentration the hydrodynamic radius of lysozyme increases, indicating the structural changes within the protein molecule. The observed structural modifications are attributed to dehydration and preliminary tertiary structure modification of the protein molecule.

Opis:
A novel estimation of temperature changes inside soft tissues has been proposed in sub-ablation range, i.e. ≈ 20°C-48°C. This estimation has been obtained by studying statistical properties of backscattered ultrasonic signals. Two different procedures of heating/cooling have been performed in which the RF echoes have been registered from soft tissue phantom in the first procedure, and from soft tissue in vitro in the second one. Calculated envelopes of signals registered in time points during heating/cooling experiments have been treated as a statistical sample drawn from a random variable with three different distributions, namely the Rayleigh distribution, the Nakagami distribution, and the K-distribution. The histograms obtained in subsequent time moments have been fitted to the three distributions. Dependencies of their shape and scale parameters on temperature have been calculated. It is concluded that the shape parameter of the K-distribution can be chosen as the best marker of temperature changes in both experiments. The choice of the marker has been made by analysis of temperature dependencies of all calculated parameters and by comparing the quality of fitting all histograms to the considered distributions. Besides, the chosen marker as a function of temperature exhibits the closest shape to temperature/time function experimentally measured.

Opis:
The J-PET detector, based on long plastic scintillator strips, was recently constructed at the Jagiellonian University. It consists of 192 modules axially arranged into three layers, read out from both sides by digital constant-threshold front-end electronics. This work presents preliminary results of measurements of the spatial resolution of the J-PET tomograph performed with ²²Na source placed at selected position inside the detector chamber.

Opis:
Understanding of biological function requires knowledge both on structural and dynamical aspects. The aim of time-resolved X-ray diffraction is to combine structural and kinetic methods by monitoring structural or conformational changes within a single protein or assemblies of proteins during their biological action in real time. This requires (i) a powerful X-ray source, (ii) appropriate detectors capable of dealing with high local and total count rates and (iii) a suitable trigger mechanism. These aspects are briefly discussed with emphasis on light as trigger for initiation of structural or conformational changes. Examples are presented on muscle contraction, lipid phase transitions, the photocycle of bacteriorhodopsin and the application of Laue crystallography on the protein p21.

Opis:
The area of microbial inactivation by the low-temperature plasma produced by DC electric cometary discharge is increased by insertion of an electrically insulated metallic grid between the discharge and the target object. Gram-negative bacteria are almost fully inactivated; an additional zone of incomplete inactivation appears for Gram-positive bacteria and yeasts.
