Opis:
The aim of this work is to investigate the influence of the Geant4 parameters on the range and the depth-dose distribution (Bragg curve) of proton beams with incident energies of 90, 150 and 230 MeV injected upon a water medium, using the Geant4 simulation package. The simulated Bragg peak ranges and the depth-dose profiles have been compared with the ones obtained from the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the experiments, respectively. It has been seen that the Geant4 parameters, such as the step size and production cuts, under study have non-negligible effects on the range and the depth-dose distribution of incident proton energies of interest, especially at 150 and 230 MeV.

Using bremsstrahlung photon is one of the principal means to treat cancer. Bremsstrahlung photons are created in medical LINAC and the interaction of bremsstrahlung photon with the heavy nuclei that constitute the linac head shielding is the main process of neutron production inside the treatment rooms. The threshold of the neutron production for those materals is about 10 MeV. As the neutron is more dangerous than photon it is important to determine neutron dose during radiotherapy treatment. The neutron distribution depends on some parameters such as gantry angle. In this study neutron dose rate has been simulated as a function of gantry angle.

Opis:
Radiation detection has been a main interest for researchers as all kind of produced particles in atomic and subatomic physics based on the measurement systems so-called detector. Detection efficiency is one of the main parameter in detection system besides many other different parameters of the detector. The absolute efficiency of the gamma detector system will be used at Turkish Accelerator and Radiation Laboratory at Ankara (TARLA) is simulated using MCNPX code (version 2.4.0). The MCNP is the general purpose MC code that can be used for neutron, photon, electron or coupled neutron, photon, electron transport. The results have been obtained for NaI(Tl) detector system and compared with the experimental results. A good agreement was found between calculation and experiment.

Opis:
One of the main goals of radiotherapy is to achieve tumor control and minimize probability of normal-tissue complications. For this reason radiation oncology requires high accuracy, which implies no more than 2-3% uncertainty levels in the treatment planning calculations. That is challenging, when heterogeneous tissues such as lungs and bones are involved. To verify the accuracy of the dose calculation algorithms numerous approaches might be performed. The most common are point dose, one-dimensional profile and two-dimensional isodose line comparison with experimental measurements. In presented study, results of transport modeling and the deposited spatial distribution of the dose, obtained by anisotropic analytical algorithm and pencil beam convolution algorithm, were compared to measurements recorded during the experiment. To achieve meaningful conclusions, three parameters: dose difference, distance to agreement and gamma parameter (γ) were taken into consideration and examined. The irradiation was performed using CIRS anthropomorphic phantom. For dose detection gafchromic EBT films were used and scanned after exposure using Epson Scanner. Measured and planned dose distributions were analyzed via FilmQA software. Preliminary results showed that the anisotropic analytical algorithm, with its complex accounting of heterogeneities, provides more accurate dose calculation within an area of a high density gradient, than pencil beam convolution does. The level of the data accuracy derived from the experiment was: dose difference (5%) - 83.4% and 68% pixels passing, distance to agreement (3 mm) - 99.0% and 96.7%, gamma parameter (for dose difference (3%), distance to agreement (3 mm)) - 90% and 75.5%, respectively, for anisotropic analytical algorithm and pencil beam convolution algorithms. The comparison between studied parameters dose difference, distance to agreement and γ for both algorithms implicated anisotropic analytical algorithm as an appropriate approach in radiotherapy treatment planning.

Opis:
In this paper, we provide a statistical analysis of high-resolution contact pattern data within primary and secondary schools as collected by the SocioPatterns collaboration. Students are graphically represented as nodes in a temporally evolving network, in which links represent proximity or interaction between students. This article focuses on link- and node-level statistics, such as the on- and off-durations of links as well as the activity potential of nodes and links. Parametric models are fitted to the on- and off-durations of links, inter-event times and node activity potentials and, based on these, we propose a number of theoretical models that are able to reproduce the collected data within varying levels of accuracy. By doing so, we aim to identify the minimal network-level properties that are needed to closely match the real-world data, with the aim of combining this contact pattern model with epidemic models in future work.

Opis:
Detailed analysis of the backscattering peak in the X-ray fluorescence spectrum was carried out using the Monte Carlo method which is the base of the computer code "SNEGMONT" for simulating the transport of electrons and photons. The calculations show that the intensity of the backscattering peak is directly proportional to the intensity of the exciting radiation. It was found that the intensity of analyzed elements' lines has a strict relation with the intensity of the backscattering peak. The example of determination of lead and zinc concentrations in bioassay is presented. The simulation of an eightfold change of the exciting X-rays intensity which taking into account the obtained strict relation allows to determine the true concentration of elements with an error of no more than 3%.

Opis:
The J-PET detector, based on long plastic scintillator strips, was recently constructed at the Jagiellonian University. It consists of 192 modules axially arranged into three layers, read out from both sides by digital constant-threshold front-end electronics. This work presents preliminary results of measurements of the spatial resolution of the J-PET tomograph performed with ²²Na source placed at selected position inside the detector chamber.
