Opis:
The paper presents the results of investigation of the temperature influence on the inductance and power losses in ferrite cores. Such effect can significantly influence the utility parameters of electronic devices, particularly in precision equipment. For example slight parameter change in this type of components in measuring devices can cause significant changes in output parameters. It is also equally important for mobile devices where increase of losses can limit the duration of service. Special measurement system composed of hysteresis graph, cryostat and PC was utilized to perform the experiment. The cores used during the investigation had closed magnetic circuit. In order to perform measurements of magnetic properties of the material, two sets of windings (magnetizing and sensing) were made on each core. The cores were placed in a cryostat, which was used to set the temperature value within the range from -20 to +50°C. The magnetic properties were measured by the hysteresis graph, to assess the influence of the temperature on the functional parameters.

Opis:
In this paper, surface potential decay after corona charge deposition has been investigated for low density polyethylene (LDPE) films. We believe that the three ways of electron charge decay on the surface of insulating polyethylene film is reasonable. The factor of neutralizing with opposite charge in air is negligible, and leakage along insulator surface or through the body is much more important for electron charge decay. Both ways are related with surface voltage of the sample. When the voltage is lower than a critical value, surface leakage contributes most. If the voltage is higher than this value, the electron energy on the surface of the sample exceeds the critical value and it is easy to cross the "deep trap". In this situation, the body leakage is more important, and the decay on the surface of sample speeds. That is why there exists decay curve crossing phenomenon.

Opis:
The presentation will give an overview of the design, construction, test and reliability of a solid state switch assembly used for magnetic forming applications. In 2005 a prototype of a reverse conducting semiconductor switch for 210 kA at 100 μs damped sine wave discharge and 21 kV dc was designed to be used in an experimental system at the Fraunhofer Institute at Chemnitz (Germany). The aim was to show the industry that semiconductors can be used for this type of applications. Precautions in the design stage have to be taken to reach high operational lifetime. The presented prototype switch was designed for an expected lifetime of 20 000 shots under nominal and 1 000 shots under short circuit conditions of 420 kA. After successful commissioning, further tests were done on separate semiconductor devices to verify under which conditions the lifetime could be increased to several million shots for the given application. For this verification, ABB has done extended device tests over more than one million shots and the wafers were analysed. The results of the reliability test are part of this presentation. It will be concluded that proper designed solid state switches are economically feasible, free from maintenance and despite higher initial cost are more reliable and superior to any other technology existing today.

Opis:
In this paper, a novel pulsed power generator based on IGBT stacks is proposed for wide pulsed power applications. Because it can generate high voltage pulsed output without any step-up transformer or pulse forming network, it has advantages of fast rising time, easiness of pulse width variation, high repetition rate and rectangular pulse shapes. Proposed scheme consists of multiple power stages which were charged parallel from series resonant power inverter. Depending on the number of power stages it can increase maximum voltage up to 60 kV or higher with no limits of power stages. To reduce component for gate power supply, a simple and robust gate drive circuit which delivers gate power and gate signal simultaneously by way of one high voltage cable is proposed. For gating signal and power a full bridge inverter and pulse transformer generates on-off signals of IGBT gating with gate power simultaneously and it has very good characteristics of protection of IGBT switches over arcing condition. It can be used for various kinds of pulse power application such as plasma source ion implantation, sterilization, water and gas treatment which requires few kHz pulse repetition rate with few to ten of microseconds pulse width.

Opis:
Charging operations of a compact Tesla transformer were experimentally investigated, in single-shot and rep-rate (50 pps for 1 s) modes, respectively. The charging limitations were also explored. The experimental results were compared and analyzed. The maximum secondary charging voltages of the Tesla transformer were measured to be 380 kV and 300 kV in single-shot and rep-rate modes, respectively. The RMS pulse-to-pulse instability of the secondary charging voltage is generally less than 10% but increases with the increasing initial voltage across the primary capacitor. Since the secondary capacitor of the Tesla transformer is a pulse forming line (PFL), continued operation is possible if there is breakdown in the PFL. Furthermore, operation can even be continued under occasional breakdown for some pulses, without the effects on the operations of subsequent pulses.

Opis:
The output from narrow-band high-power microwave (HPM) sources, such as the virtual cathode oscillator (vircator) and the magnetically insulated line oscillator (MILO), is strongly dependent on the voltage pulse feed. A rectangular, flat-top voltage pulse can be achieved by the use of a transmission line as a pulse-forming unit. The development in high-voltage cable technology has made them useful as parts of high-voltage and high-power generator systems. The generator is designed to deliver a 200 ns voltage pulse of 500 kV into a 10 Ω unmatched load with an electric power of 25 GW. The generator has an impedance of 2 Ω. The primary energy storage of the generator consists of a 50 kV, 20 kJ capacitor bank. The 50 kV is discharged into a transformer that charges a pulse-forming line to 550 kV. When charged, the pulse-forming line is discharged into the load via a spark gap. This paper presents results from initial testing of the generator.
