Opis:
It is a well-identified fact that more elaborate laboratory studies should be carried out for evaluation of dynamic properties of different types of soils. Regardless of the mechanisms affecting the mechanical behaviour of the soils, past studies reveal that existence of fiber positively affects the strength of either cohesive or non-cohesive soils. A short literature survey provides numerous studies on the stress-strain behaviour of fine/coarse soils, reinforced by polypropylene fiber. On the other hand, studies concerning fiber reinforced soils subjected to dynamic loading are relatively rare. Therefore, in this research it was intended to investigate the effects of polypropylene fiber inclusion on the dynamic behavior of a clayey sand soil, within an experimental framework. In this scope, a number of cyclic triaxial compression tests were conducted to assess the effect of fiber presence. The effects of fiber length and content were experimentally evaluated. Hence, the variation of shear modulus ratio and damping ratio values by shear deformation was plotted to observe the effects of fiber length and inclusion level as well. The results are presented along with detailed evaluations.

Opis:
Strength and permeability of sand-bentonite mixtures are of main concern, particularly in liner design. This study presents the results obtained from an experimental investigation of strength and permittivity of compacted sand-bentonite mixtures in the presence of water-reducing admixture of lignosulfonate. For this, sand-bentonite mixtures containing 4, 8, 12, 16% of bentonite were subjected to standard Proctor tests, to obtain the optimum water content and maximum void ratio of the mixtures. Similar specimens were prepared by partially replacing 0.5, 1 and 2% of water in the mixture with lignosulfonate. Additional specimens containing 16% of bentonite were prepared with 5% deviation towards the wet and dry sides of optimum water content, which was partially replaced with lignosulfonate for evaluation of the effects of deviation from optimum moisture content during densification. It was observed that partial replacement of water with lignosulfonate slightly increases the strength and decreases the permittivity, and that this effect was more pronounced as the replacement level was increased. Additionally, test results reveal that lignosulfonate replacement was more effective on the dry side of optimum water content.

Opis:
Granular materials have vast applications both in industry and in daily life. They display quite interesting and exceptional properties different from the other known forms of matter. To investigate the complex properties of particulate materials, experimental, analytical, and numerical techniques have been employed. In this paper the results of experimental and numerical tests of various grain sizes and coefficient of friction between granules and cylindrical walls on the mass measured at bottom of container, known as apparent mass, are reported. It is revealed that apparent mass augments with the grain size. Moreover, it is also found that the variation in apparent mass measurement is strongly dependent on bead diameter rather than the silo size. The results suggest that the conversion of vertical stresses into horizontal in silo is mainly due to the friction between the grain and system boundary than the arching phenomenon.

Opis:
Convection in horizontally vibrated granular systems is significant for scientists and engineers for their importance in the field of mining, geo-physics, and pharmaceutical etc. This research work studied three types of convection rolls, "Homogeneous convection roll", "lower-right diagonal convection roll" and "upper-right diagonal convection roll" which occurred in a square container filled with binary granular particles mixture of sized d=(4.0±0.2) mm and d=(8.0±0.2) mm. Container was vibrated horizontally with low frequencies f and low dimensionless acceleration Γ. Helical movement was observed along the walls perpendicular to direction of motion while straight-line movement along the walls horizontal to direction of motion. Helical and straight-line movements of particles along the walls are the part of convection rolls. A heap appeared due to vibration, which has dominant effect on the convection rolls. Heap position is function of frequency f and dimensionless accelerations Γ.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of measurements of rheological properties of ethylene glycol (EG) based aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) nanofluids. The nanofluids have been produced by two-step method with the use of commercially available nanoparticles. Dynamic viscosity curves and dependence of viscosity on temperature for these materials have been measured. It has shown that with higher concentration of nanoparticles in the suspension, these nanofluids exhibit the non-Newtonian flow and it can be considered as shear-thinning liquids. The effect of temperature on the dynamic viscosity in Al₂O₃-EG nanofluids can be modelled with the use of Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann expression.

Opis:
Rheology of viscoelastic fluids is a complex phenomenon. Full blood is an example of a body fluid of non-Newtonian character with pronounced viscoelastic properties. Blood flow in the circulatory system depends not only on the physical and physico-chemical properties of blood but also on the structure and properties of the vascular system. Blood viscosity is one of the most important factor determining the blood flow. Its value depends on the shear rate, hematocrit, erythrocyte aggregability and deformability, and on the plasma viscosity and composition. In the course of the investigation we utilized oscillatory methods, called also dynamic mechanical analysis. The technique principle is based on the measurement of the amplitude and phase of oscillations of the sample subject to a harmonic force with certain amplitude and frequency. The results of dynamic mechanical analysis were used to determine the viscoelastic properties of blood samples. We performed also the standard flow curve measurements of the blood plasma samples, that is shear stress as a function of shear rate in the rotary mode. All measurements were performed by means of a Contraves LS-40 rheometer on blood samples taken from two groups of patients. One group contained patients after heart attack, while the second one - after cerebral infarction. In none of the groups the patients were in an acute state. Information obtained from oscillatory measurements indicate increased erythrocyte aggregability in both groups of patients.

Opis:
The aim of the current work was to analyze the influence of alternating magnetic field on the viscoelastic properties of blood in vivo in patients with lasting pain problems. Oscillatory techniques, also called the dynamic mechanical analysis, have been used in the current work to study the viscoelastic properties of blood. The blood samples were collected from patients of a neurological ward complaining about spinal cord and lower limbs pain. Altogether 25 patients took part in the study. A blood sample was collected from each patient twice: before the magnetostimulation and after five treatments. For each blood sample, the hematocrit value was measured using the standard method. Plasma viscosity and the complex whole blood viscosity were measured by means of a rotary-oscillating rheometer Contraves LS40. Magnetic field was generated by the instrument Viofor JPS and the magnetostimulation treatments were performed using different programs. The analysis of the results included estimation of the hematocrit value, plasma viscosity, complex whole blood viscosity and its components: viscous and elastic viscosity at four chosen amplitudes of the shear rate as a function of the applied treatment program. The results obtained in the study suggest that rheological properties of blood change depending on the applied magnetostimulation program.
