Opis:
Strength and permeability of sand-bentonite mixtures are of main concern, particularly in liner design. This study presents the results obtained from an experimental investigation of strength and permittivity of compacted sand-bentonite mixtures in the presence of water-reducing admixture of lignosulfonate. For this, sand-bentonite mixtures containing 4, 8, 12, 16% of bentonite were subjected to standard Proctor tests, to obtain the optimum water content and maximum void ratio of the mixtures. Similar specimens were prepared by partially replacing 0.5, 1 and 2% of water in the mixture with lignosulfonate. Additional specimens containing 16% of bentonite were prepared with 5% deviation towards the wet and dry sides of optimum water content, which was partially replaced with lignosulfonate for evaluation of the effects of deviation from optimum moisture content during densification. It was observed that partial replacement of water with lignosulfonate slightly increases the strength and decreases the permittivity, and that this effect was more pronounced as the replacement level was increased. Additionally, test results reveal that lignosulfonate replacement was more effective on the dry side of optimum water content.

Opis:
In order to survive the competition, the processing cycle time and the energy consumption of the rotational foam molding process must be reduced to a fraction of its current levels without compromising product quality. This paper introduces a novel extrusion-assisted rotational foam molding process for the manufacture of rotational moldings having adjacent, but clearly distinct, layers of an integrated solid (non-cellular) skin boundary layer encapsulating a cellular core structure, consisting of identical or compatible polyolefin grades, that achieves significant savings in processing cycle time duration and energy consumption. It introduces non-chilled extruded foam as a foamed core-forming material, in real time, directly into a uni-axially rotating hot mold through a dedicated mold "injection" port onto the already formed un-foamed soft skin layer.

Opis:
Nonlinear optical dichroism technique is shown to be an useful tool for the 1D conjugated polymer chain orientation study. When done as a function of rotation angle it gives the order parameters. These parameters can be also obtained by coupling this technique with linear dichroism method. The technique is illustrated by third harmonic generation on epitaxied polydiacetylene thin films either on single-crystalline or on preoriented ultrathin films by rubbing. Whereas an almost perfect orientation is obtained in the case of epitaxy of p-DCH, poly [1,6-bis(N-carbazolyl)-2,4-hexadiyne], on KAP, potassium acid phthalate, single crystal, this is smaller for epitaxy on preoriented substrate. The results are correlated with thin film texture measurements with X-rays. A good overall agreement is seen except that X-ray data show better order than nonlinear optical dichroism. A possible origin of this difference is shortly discussed.

Opis:
Recycling of many polymers has gained a spectacular importance mainly because of its environmental and economical benefits. Ethylene vinyl acetate is one of the thermoplastics used directly as a final product and indirectly as an additive within many other polymeric materials. There has been limited research work on recycling of polymers even though recycling in industry has shown a spectacular growth in the last decade. It is the aim of this study to investigate and to evaluate the rheological behaviour of an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer resin upon recycling. For this purpose, original ethylene vinyl acetate granules were processed five cycles by using a twin-screw extruder and their rheological analysis was performed by means of an AR-G2 rheometer (TA Instruments), with a parallel-plate geometry, under a steady state condition. It was found that the rheological measurements of copolymer ethylene vinyl acetate exhibited a shear thinning constitutive behavior, obeying Carreau-Yasuda rheological constitutive model. The changes in flow and oscillatory shear measurements under different processing conditions were also determined in detail and results are reported in the paper.
