Opis:
With the advance of nanostructuring techniques and the availability of third-generation synchrotron sources, Fresnel-type zone plate optics is widely used for nanospectroscopic investigations with resolutions of several 10 nm. Whereas hard X-rays commonly use diffraction or elemental contrast (e.g. using X-ray fluorescence), soft X-rays are favored to utilize the spectroscopic contrast in the near-edge region of the absorption edge. In particular, for soft materials, the relevant C-, N- and O 1s absorption edges show distinct resonances which allow fingerprint-type chemical identification, even in water surroundings. Few selected examples from modern material science will be discussed to demonstrate that the combination of X-ray absorption spectroscopy with high spatial resolution yields new insight into the nanoscale properties of these materials.

Opis:
This work deals with an interaction of a magnetic fluid of a dielectric nature with a magnetic field by means of ultrasound waves measurements and analysis. Ultrasound analysis is known as a non-destructive inspection tool often used in technical diagnostics, moreover, it has numerous applications in medicine and biology, too. We report the low-frequency ultrasound analysis of a dielectric magnetic fluid in a low-intensity external static magnetic field. The studied magnetic fluid was composed of a transformer oil and dispersed magnetite nanoparticles coated with oleic acid. Experiments were carried out by using an ultrasonic testing cell. The cell was exposed to a magnetic field of 50 mT in both parallel and perpendicular direction to the waves propagation. A through-transmission mode measurement was applied, where two fixed narrow-band transducers with completely shielded crystal for maximum RFI/EMI immunity (Physical Acoustic R15I-AST, the resonant frequency 150 kHz) served as a transmitter and a receiver. In this way we carried out the measurement of the frequency-dependent ultrasonic response to a rectangle calibrating signal of 5 μs pulse width. Digitized signals were recorded for further analysis. We present the frequency domain analysis of the low-frequency ultrasound in magnetic fluid. The frequency spectrum in magnetic fluid colloidal system was calculated by the Fourier transformation method. Results show that there is a frequency shift in the amplitude-frequency spectrum caused by the step-up magnetic field. The higher the magnetic field, the higher the frequency of the peaks. The effect of particle aggregation in magnetic field on the ultrasound wave propagation is discussed in the paper.

The purpose of this study is synthesis, characterization and enzyme activity functions of novel dinuclear metal complexes. Therefore two new dinuclear heterometallic cobat(II)-copper(II) complexes have been synthesized and structurally characterized by using Fourier transform infrared method, elemental analysis, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, molar conductivity, magnetic moment measurements and thermal analysis. Spectroscopic and stoichiometric data of the metal complexes indicated that the metal:ligand ratio of the complexes were found to be 2:1. Both of the complexes are 1:2 electrolytes as shown by their molar conductivities and paramagnetism. The subnormal magnetic moment values of the dinuclear complexes were explained by an antiferromagnetic interaction. Additionally complexes were each tested both for their ability to oxidation reaction of 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol to the 3,5-di-tert-butyl-o-benzoquinone presence of O₂ and catalyse the disproportionation of hydrogen peroxide in the presence of the added base imidazole. It was found that both of the complexes exhibited good catecholase and catalase-like enzyme activity.

Opis:
Several strategies to form multicomponent films of functional polymers, with micron, submicron and nanometer structures, intended for plastic electronics and biotechnology are presented. These approaches are based on film deposition from polymer solution onto a rotating substrate (spin-casting), a method implemented already on manufacturing lines. Film structures are determined with compositional (nanometer) depth profiling and (submicron) imaging modes of dynamic secondary ion mass spectrometry, near-field scanning optical microscopy (with submicron resolution) and scanning probe microscopy (revealing nanometer features). Self-organization of spin-cast polymer mixtures is discussed in detail, since it offers a one-step process to deposit and align simultaneously domains, rich in different polymers, forming various device elements: (i) Surface segregation drives self-stratification of nanometer lamellae for solar cells and anisotropic conductors. (ii) Cohesion energy density controls morphological transition from lamellar (optimal for encapsulated transistors) to lateral structures (suggested for light emitting diodes with variable color). (iii) Selective adhesion to substrate microtemplates, patterned chemically, orders lateral structures for plastic circuitries. (iv) Submicron imprints of water droplets (breath figures) decorate selectively micron-sized domains, and can be used in devices with hierarchic structure. In addition, selective protein adsorption to regular polymer micropatterns, formed with soft lithography after spin-casting, suggests applications in protein chip technology. An approach to reduce lateral blend film structures to submicron scale is also presented, based on (annealed) films of multicomponent nanoparticles.

K-feldspars in pegmatites from Luc Yen gem mining area, Yen Bai province, Vietnam were studied by X-ray fluorescence, X-ray powder diffraction and the Raman spectroscopy. Chemical analysis determined the K-feldspars in the form: of (K_{0.8909}Na_{0.0388}Ca_{0.002}Pb_{0.0042}Cs_{0.0024}Rb_{0.0338})(Al_{0.9975}Fe_{0.0053}Ti_{0.0004})Si_{2.988}O₈. Both X-ray powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy indicated Luc Yen K-feldspars as orthoclase phase. Together with the values of Al content of the T1 tetrahedral sites in orthoclase, it is understood that Luc Yen pegmatites are of young ages (Cenozoic) and shallow intrusive types.

We report on the influence of plasmon resonance in spherical gold nanoparticles on the optical properties of light-harvesting complex LH2 from the purple bacteria Rhodopseudomonas palustris. Systematic studies as a function of the excitation energy and the separation distance indicate that metal enhanced fluorescence shows strong dependence upon both of these parameters. We observe substantial increase of the fluorescence from LH2 complex in a hybrid nanostructure with 12 nm silica spacer. On the other hand, the enhancement measured with laser tuned into the plasmon resonance is almost threefold compared to the off-resonance configuration. The enhancement of fluorescence intensity originates in both cases from the increase of carotenoid absorption in the LH2 complex.

The purification and functionalization of commercial multiwall carbon nanotubes was investigated. Carbon nanotubes (CNT CO., Ltd, Korea) were treated with boiling concentrated HNO_3 under a reflux condenser for about 50 h at 120°C in order to purify and oxidize the raw material. The oxidized multiwall carbon nanotubes were rinsed with deionized water until stabilization of the filtrate pH. Measurement techniques included elemental analysis (CHN), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermal analysis. With the measurement techniques used the following information was obtained: CHN analysis provided information about the quantitative composition of the following elements carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, scanning electron microscopy imaging provided information on shape, thickness and length of the nanotubes, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry analysis of information about surface atomic composition of the quantitative analysis, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry quantitative analysis of the atomic composition (metals, especially Fe, Al), the Fourier transform infrared studies provided information about qualitative analysis of surface functional groups $C_{x}O_{y}H_{z}$ (COOH, OH, COO) and thermal gravimetric-differential thermal analysis - quantitative analysis of thermal decomposition products. It was found that oxidation leads to the removal of amorphous carbon and forms mainly carboxylic functional groups linked to the nanotubes. The Fourier transform infrared spectra indicate the presence of some other structures, like ketone (quinone), acid anhydride, ether and epoxy groups. Nitric acid treatment also effectively removes aluminum oxide catalyst and iron catalyst from commercial multiwall carbon nanotubes.

Important bioinorganic objects, both living and fossilized are as a rule characterized by a complex microscopic structure. For biological samples, the cell-like and laminar as well as growth ring structures are among most significant. Moreover, these objects belong to a now widely studied category of biominerals with composite, inorganic-organic structure. Such materials are composed of a limited number of inorganic compounds and several natural organic polymers. This apparently simple composition leads to an abnormal variety of constructions significant from the medical (repairs and implants), natural (ecological effectiveness) and material science (biomimetic synthesis) point of view. The analysis of an image obtained in an optical microscope, optionally in a scanning electron microscope is a topographical reference for further investigations. For the characterization of the distribution of chemical elements and compounds in a material, techniques such as X-ray, electron- or proton microprobes are applied. Essentially, elemental mappings are collected in this stage. The need for the application of an X-ray diffraction microprobe is obvious and our experience indicates on the necessity of using the synchrotron-based devices due to their better spatial resolution and good X-ray intensity. To examine the presence of the organic compounds, the Raman microprobe measurements are good options. They deliver information about the spatial distribution of functional groups and oscillating fragments of molecules. For the comprehensive investigation of bioinorganic material structural and chemical features, we propose the following sequence of methods: optical imaging, elemental mapping, crystallographic mapping, organic mapping and micromechanical mapping. The examples of such an approach are given for: petrified wood, human teeth, and an ammonite shell.

The bidentate Schiff base ligand 4-chloro-2-[1-(4-phenylphenyl)ethylideneamino]phenol and its mononuclear Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes have been synthesized. Ligand and metal complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic susceptibility, molar conductivity, ¹H- and ¹³C-NMR, the Fourier transform infrared, UV-Vis, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, and thermogravimetric-differential thermogravimetric studies. The results suggest that the mononuclear complexes have a metal to ligand mole ratio of 1:2 and the metal(II) ions are coordinated with the phenolic oxygen and imine nitrogen atoms. Octahedral structures are proposed for the complexes of the Schiff base ligand. Furthermore, the complexes were checked for their efficiency to decolorize the dye methylene blue. In our experiments we found that metal(II) complexes had an acceptable decolorization efficiency against the dye methylene blue.

Amorphous $Fe_{80-x}Co_{x}Zr_7Si_{13}$ (x = 0-30 at.%) alloys in which boron was completely replaced by silicon as a glass forming element have been prepared by melt quenching. Partial substitution of iron by cobalt caused the increase of the hyperfine field and saturation magnetization. The specialized rf-Mössbauer measurements revealed that all amorphous alloys studied are magnetically very soft. The rf-sidebands effect, related to magnetostriction, increases with the increase of Co content. In $Fe_{50}Co_{30}Zr_7Si_{13}$ sample the rf field exposure induced partial crystallization of amorphous phase that was attributed to mechanical deformations related to high frequency magnetostrictive vibrations induced by the rf field. The measurements of the hysteresis loop revealed that coercivity increases for higher Co content.

FTIR imaging is a novel spectroscopic technique able to provide cell imaging, in vivo and in real-time. However, one key issue is developing methodologies for cell culture on IR-transparent substrates fitting cell biology requirements. In this work we tested different IR-transparent substrates in terms of biotoxicity, surface properties, and spectral image acquisition qualities. Only a few substrates, namely Si₃N₄, Ge, GLS, LaF₃, Si, SrF₂, ZnS/C, ZnS/F, were found to provide cell culture conditions comparable to those observed on usual polycarbonate Petri dishes, the main limiting parameter being the toxicity of the material (ZnS, GLS, PbF₂, PbCl₂) or a poor adhesiveness (notably diamond, AgCl, CaF₂, ZnS). From substrates eligible for a good-quality cell culture, the spectral acquisition quality is mainly affected by the refractive index value. Finally, the best compromise between cell culture quality and image spectral quality could be obtained using Si and Ge substrates. This rationalization of the available IR-transparent substrates for bioimaging is particularly relevant for live cell analyses, where cell culture conditions must remain unaffected by substrate properties.

Preliminary studies on the sediments collected from water meters of Krakow water supply system were performed in the cooperation with the Municipal Water Supply and Sewage. Creation and deposition of sediments on the measuring devices installed in the water supply system is a serious technological and economical problem for water companies, defectively operating for this reason water meters must be replaced. It is evident that knowledge of the chemical and phase composition of sediments is an important step towards resolving the problem of impurities in water supply systems. Four different samples of sediments, coming from water meters, were investigated using the proton-induced X-ray emission, the X-ray diffraction, the Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopy. The X-ray methods revealed presence of amorphous and fine-crystalline phases as well as high content of iron-based compounds. As a crystalline phase, the most frequently appeared: goethite, lepidocrocite, iron oxides (hematite, maghemite, magnetite), calcium carbonate, and quartz. In one of the samples, the nanocrystalline phase was found and identified as hydrous iron oxyhydroxide ferrihydrite. Vibrational spectroscopy methods confirmed the composition of crystalline phases as well as enabled to estimate the abundance of amorphous phase in samples.

The aim of the paper is the identification of the most frequently used antibiotics such as cefazolin, cefuroxime, cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, ceftazidime, lyncomycin, clindamycin, levofloxacin, doxycycline and vancomycin by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry interface in positive and negative modes. The fragmentation pathways of the group of antibiotics were colligated on the basis of the obtained ESI mass spectra. Generally, the positive ion spectra of antibiotics are higher in intensity including an [M+H]⁺ ion and producing less fragmentation as well as more informative compared to the negative ion spectra. Only ESI of levofloxacin in positive and negative modes with the chosen tune parameters leads to degradation of molecular ion, so the parent ion does not appear in the mass spectra. The group of antibiotics (cephalosporins and lincosamides) shows the same characteristic fragmentation. These setup parameters were successfully applied for the routine determination of antibiotics in their pharmaceutical dosage forms and other objects. Data base was developed for identification of antibiotics by comparison of their molecular and fragment ions.

The goal of the present work is evaluated mechanical properties and forming limit diagrams of ambient rolled aluminium alloy based on AlMgSi. Forming limit diagrams are convenient and often used as a tool for the classification of the formability and the evaluation of the forming process of sheet materials. Forming limits of sheet metal are represented in the forming limit diagrams occurring by various deformation states. The most widely used type is the Keeler-Goodwin diagram. Input data got from static tensile test are important for formability evaluating of the thin sheet by mathematical simulations, such as tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and the strain hardening exponent. The result is a consideration of the suitability of the material for stamping technology.
