The convenience of dynamic anterior cervical PMMA biomaterial placement of spinal implants is considered by finite element modeling. The maximum fatigue behavior was also studied in surface coated Ti-5Al-2.55n spinal screw-rods. Anterior cervical biomaterial plates reduce the hazard for spinal cord injury and provide outstanding fixation for the anterior column, to stop the relocation and slackening of screws-rods by a cross-split screw crown that may be fastened into the biomaterial plate. This article reports about the hollow Ti-5Al-2.55n screw and cervical biomaterial PMMA plate system. The flexion movement of the spine implant was modeled to control the stresses and strains of the bone and screw interfaces under the external forces, as well as motion of the vertebrae by finite element modeling. This computational engineering analysis is aimed to support patients suffering anterior cervical arthrodesis after degenerative disease or trauma. The data from this research may provide an essential base to estimate the stabilization quality. A model for the biomaterial between C4 and C6 segments of vertebrae of cervical spine was obtained. Study of the cervical biomaterial implant provides instantaneous secure fixation virtual experiment with minimal complications, before the real implant surgery, using computer aided virtual engineering.

Opis:
In this study, the microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated of different amount Cr (0.1%, 0.5%, 0.9%) added Sn-9Zn eutectic alloys and Weibull statistical analyses were evaluated using ultimate tensile strength. Pure elements (Sn, Zn, Cr) were used for production of alloys and pre-alloying was done and waited in the electrical resistance furnace at 450°C for 1 h to homogenized and poured as ingot in plaster moulds. Then pre-alloyed Sn-9Zn-xCr ingots were melted and poured at 300°C in ceramic moulds prepared investment casting method. As a result of the study, the highest hardness and ultimate tensile strength values were measured in the Sn-9Zn alloy with 0.1% Cr. It was determined that while ultimate tensile strength was decreased, percentage of elongation was increased by increase of Cr amount. According to the Weibull statistical analyses results, the highest Weibull module was calculated by Sn-9Zn-0.1Cr alloy ultimate tensile strength values.

This paper reports an experimental study on the design of self-compacting lightweight concrete using acidic pumice with different powder materials. For this aim, nine self-compacting lightweight concretes were designed with inclusion of two different fine aggregates and different powder materials. This way, two groups of concrete were designed. First group was composed of single type of aggregate which is acidic pumice from Bitlis Region with barite powder, fly ash powder and pumice powder inclusion, while the second group was generated with river sand as a fine aggregate and acidic pumice from Bitlis Region, as a coarse aggregate with the same powder addition. In the design process, slump-flow, V-funnel and L-box tests were applied to determine the fresh properties of self-compacting lightweight concrete. After the design, test of compressive strength, which is one of the most important parameters of concrete, was applied to all self-compacting lightweight concretes in early age. Moreover, ultrasound pulse velocity test was also performed on all concrete series at the same ages.

Automobile wheel rims are critical elements that work under fatigue loading. For this reason, it is very important to determine fatigue damage of the wheel rims. Today, finite element analysis is used to make accurate predictions. In this study, it is aimed to determine Chaboche damage model parameters for an aluminium alloy wheel rim. Msc Marc software is used for finite element analysis. First, Chaboche damage model parameters are obtained using simple Holloman equation for finite element analysis. Model parameters are validated by single element tests. Then, fatigue behaviour of an automobile wheel rim is analysed with verified Chaboche parameters. At last, critical areas under fatigue loading are identified on the wheel rim.

Opis:
It is a well-identified fact that more elaborate laboratory studies should be carried out for evaluation of dynamic properties of different types of soils. Regardless of the mechanisms affecting the mechanical behaviour of the soils, past studies reveal that existence of fiber positively affects the strength of either cohesive or non-cohesive soils. A short literature survey provides numerous studies on the stress-strain behaviour of fine/coarse soils, reinforced by polypropylene fiber. On the other hand, studies concerning fiber reinforced soils subjected to dynamic loading are relatively rare. Therefore, in this research it was intended to investigate the effects of polypropylene fiber inclusion on the dynamic behavior of a clayey sand soil, within an experimental framework. In this scope, a number of cyclic triaxial compression tests were conducted to assess the effect of fiber presence. The effects of fiber length and content were experimentally evaluated. Hence, the variation of shear modulus ratio and damping ratio values by shear deformation was plotted to observe the effects of fiber length and inclusion level as well. The results are presented along with detailed evaluations.

Opis:
In this study, effect of double stage gas nitriding of 34CrAlNi7-10 steel was analyzed. Nitriding processes were carried out in two stages. in the first stage, samples were nitridied at 500°C for 10 h and then in second stage nitriding process was continued at 530 and 550°C for 20 h. During both stages, the nitrogen activity on surface was controlled by the nitriding potential, which is a thermodynamical control parameter for controlled gas nitriding process. The nitriding potential was kept constant, at value of 10, during the first stage and was varied in the range of 3.2-0.2, for both nitriding temperatures, in the second stage. The presence of nitrides, formed on the surface of test materials was determined by XRD analysis technique. The morphology of nitrided layer was studied by optical microscopy. The microhardness of the surfaces of nitrided samples in HV1 was between 955 and 1029. The measurements have shown that the thickness of the compound layer (white layer) has varied between 6.85-23.90 μm and that the growth of the white layer and microhardness gradient were strongly affected by the nitriding potential and the temperature. Diffusion depths as Nht(HV) for Vickers Hardness were determined and compared.

Wood pallets are important carrying tools, defined in packaging engineering, for fragile or any kind of heavy goods. Wood pallets are exposed to flexural forces resulting in fracture and fatigue during transportation. In this research, the fracture and fatigue behavior of wood pallet system under loading was investigated, taking into account nail and pallet material behavior, using strain-stress distribution by computational finite element analysis. Static and dynamic numerical analysis was performed on the 3D model of poplar wood pallet using ANSYS computational system. To validate the data gathered from Von Mises yield, Goodman and N-S fatigue diagrams were established to predict fatigue life. The finite element models built in this research may assist the design engineers and manufacturers in evaluation of new design strategies of poplar wood pallets.

Soft magnetic composites are used in a wide range of applications working in different environmental conditions, between others, in different temperatures. Nowadays, devices often work in cryogenic temperatures. The paper shows influence of liquid nitrogen temperature on mechanical properties of soft magnetic composites prepared from ABC100.30 powder bonded by epoxy resin. Mechanical properties of samples were measured in room and liquid nitrogen temperatures. Compressive strength and transverse rapture strength increase with decreasing temperature. This type of soft magnetic composite can be applied in magnetic circuits of devices working in cryogenic temperatures. The results of measurement show that new devices, especially electric machines, working in these temperatures can be designed with higher mechanical loadings than devices working at room temperature.

Opis:
Polyphenylene sulfide is a semicrystalline thermoplastic polymer. It offers an excellent balance of properties, including chemical resistance, high temperature resistance, dimensional stability, electrical characteristics and flowability. Polyphenylene sulfide must be filled with reinforced agents, such as fibers and fillers, to overcome its inherent brittleness. Because of its low viscosity, polyphenylene sulfide can be molded with high loading of fillers and reinforcements. These fillers and reinforcements will make a difference in the electrical properties, strength, dimensional stability, surface properties and overall cost. Because of its inherent flame retardancy, polyphenylene sulfide is ideal for high temperature electrical applications. On the other hand, olivine is volcanic based mineral with porous structure, which consists of forsterite (Mg₂SiO₄) and fayalite (Fe₂SiO₄). Both, its lower price compared to other minerals and harmlessness to human health increase the usage of olivine from day to day. For this reason olivine reinforced polyphenylene sulfide composite samples were manufactured at various weight ratios (0, 1, 3, 5 and 10 wt.%). Mechanical and scratch properties of samples were investigated and according to test results, it is concluded that olivine mineral can be used as a reinforcing agent material instead of other conventional fillers.

Opis:
This study presents an investigation of the prediction of impact resistance of steel-fiber-reinforced concrete and ordinary concrete specimens. In the experimental part of this study, parameters identifying impact resistance of various concrete mixtures were determined using an impact test machine, in accordance with ACI Committee 544. For this aim, concrete specimens containing three different aggregates (basalt, limestone and natural aggregate) were cured in water at 20°C for 28 days. After curing impact resistance tests were performed on specimens having compressive strength values between 20 and 50 MPa, to determine the blows to initial crack and failure. The specimens were also subjected to splitting tensile strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity tests. Initially, using blows to initial crack and failure, many attempts were made to classify the impact resistance of different types of concrete in terms of the origin of used aggregate, strength properties or ultrasonic pulse velocity, however, this made no sense. The specimens could only be classified in terms of steel fiber presence. Therefore, radial basis function network, which belongs to another kind of unsupervised classifier network, was used to estimate the two above-mentioned impact resistance parameters. In this scope, independent from aggregate origin used in preparation of specimens, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity of the specimens were used to predict the impact resistance parameters of the concrete specimens. The results revealed that three listed parameters can be used for estimation of blows to formation of initial crack and failure. Scatter plots, root mean square error and absolute value of average residual parameters were used to verify the errors in predictions, which were very low, compared with the uncertainty in test and ambiguity of data in hand.

This paper reports results of an experimental study of the strength properties of fibre reinforced self-compacting concrete (FRSCC). For this aim, a control self-compacting concrete and 24 FRSCCs were designed, applying fresh self-compacting concrete criteria tests. In the design of FRSCC, four steel and two polypropylene synthetic fibres of different lengths and aspect ratios were used. These fibres were used alone and in combinations with two and four of these fibres. In this way, not only the effect of single fibre and the synergy effect of hybrid fibres, but also the size and concentration effect of fibres, which had different ratios in total fibre volume, were investigated. In the design process, Portland cement and fly ash were used as the binder and the powder material. The compressive and flexural-tensile strength tests were employed at the age of 3, 7, 28, 56 and 90 curing days, to determine the strength properties of FRSCCs. Moreover, ultrasound pulse velocity test was also performed on all concrete series at the same ages.
