Opis:
Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are widely used for industrial and aero turbines. The use of residual fuel oil is well known due to economic reasons, which causes hot corrosion. Hot corrosion over extended exposures reduces durability. Therefore, there is a requirement to develop new design approaches for TBCs in order to operate under hot corrosion environment. In this paper, the effect of bond coat thickness on the hot corrosion resistance was studied. Hot corrosion test were carried out in 50 wt.% Na₂So₄+50 wt.% V₂O₅ molten salt at 950°C for 50 hours. The characterizations of the coatings included X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy and optical microscope. Results indicated that TBCs with thick bond coat exhibited superior hot corrosion resistance to the TBCs with conventional bond coat.

This paper investigates the effect of different electrolytes containing silicate and phosphate by two-step oxidation using the micro-arc oxidation technique. The growth effect, surface roughness, and element distributions of the micro-arc oxidation coatings were characterized. The composition of coating was characterized using X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive spectrum, and the morphology was examined using scanning electron microscope. The surface characterizations results show that the coating growth forms are different in Si and P electrolytes while the coated samples were almost composed of γ-Al₂O₃.

Opis:
The paper presents results of studies on the crystallite sizes of oxide layer formed during a long-term operation on steel at an elevated temperature. This value was determined by a method based on analysis of the diffraction line profile, according to a Scherrer formula. The oxide layer was studied on a surface and a cross-section at the inner site on the pipe inlet, at the fire and counter-fire wall of the tube. X-ray studies were carried out on the inner surface of a tube (in a flowing medium environment), then the layer's surface was polished and the diffraction measurements repeated to reveal differences in the originated oxides layer. X-ray phase analysis was performed by the use of a SEIFERT 3003 T/T X-ray diffractometer, with a cobalt source of λ_{Co}=0.17902 nm wavelength. X-ray diffraction measurements were performed in the 20÷120° range of angles with an angular step of 0.1°. To interpret the results the diffractograms were described by a pseudo Voigt curve using the Analyze software. A computer software and the DHN PDS, PDF4+2009 crystallographic database were used for the phase identification. The results showed that the crystallite sizes have an effect on the properties of the oxide. It has been shown that the outer oxide layer having larger crystallites, is more porous and thus more brittle.

Oxidation of erosion products was studied by means of the Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction methods when the strip of stainless steel was cut with the laser. Different content of wustite and chromium doped magnetite $Fe_{3-x}Cr_{x}O_{4}$ was found in the samples of erosion products depending on the place where the erosion products were collected in relation to the cutting slot. Conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy data showed that more magnetite was found at the surface while wustite distributes in the whole volume of particles of erosion products.

Commercial availability and low price of light alkanes make them very attractive in many branches of industry. Potentially interesting is their use in the process of oxidative dehydrogenation leading to production of olefins. This study was undertaken to characterise the oxidative dehydrogenation of n-butane to 1,3-butadiene (important substrate in production of synthetic rubber and polyamides) taking place over the modified carbon catalysts obtained from peach stones precursor. The catalytic tests were performed in the temperature range 250-450°C at oxygen/n-butane ratio of 1:1. For the majority of the activated carbon samples studied at the lowest temperature the only product was $CO_2$. At 300°C the products of dehydrogenation of n-butane and side products appeared. With increasing temperature the amount of compounds generated increased and in the group of C4 hydrocarbons the dominant were 1-butene and 1,3-butadiene. The most effective catalyst was the sample oxidised with air, the least effective was the sample modified with ammonium peroxydisulphate.

Opis:
It is well documented that the high oxygen affinity elements such as Y, Ce, La, Er and other rare earth elements added to steel in small amounts can improve their high temperature oxidation resistance. Rare earth elements can be either alloyed during the steel making process or introduced through surface treatment techniques. Improvement of high temperature oxidation resistance of AISI 316 L steel by incorporation Ce and La elements into its near surface region using high intensity pulsed plasma beams in so-called deposition by the pulse erosion mode was investigated in the present work. The samples were irradiated with 3 short (μs scale) intense (energy density $3 J//cm^2$) plasma pulses. Heating and cooling processes occur under non-equilibrium conditions. In all samples the near surface layer of the thickness in μm range was melted and simultaneously doped with cerium and lanthanum. The modified samples were oxidized at 1000°C for 100 h in air. The obtained effects were: oxide scales formed on the treated samples were more fine-grained, compact and adhering better that those formed on the un-treated samples.

Opis:
The presented work deals with the oxidation resistance of spark plasma sintered and thermally sprayed FeAl-based intermetallics. Gas-atomized binary single phase Fe-43(at.%)Al and dual phase Fe-55(at.%)Al powders were used for spark plasma sintering and/or thermal spraying. Coatings were deposited by two different plasma spray technologies - gas and water stabilized plasma guns. The prepared samples were exposed to oxidation in artificial air at 700°C. The mass gain was measured during oxidation at 700C up to 1000 h. Microstructures, phase and chemical compositions of the formed scales were characterized after the exposition by means of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy).

Opis:
The corrosion enhancement due to plasma post-oxidation subsequent to plasma nitriding of the samples of low alloy annealed steel AISI 4140 was evaluated. The plasma nitriding was carried out at ≈570°C for 1-3 h in an atmosphere of 75% H₂ and 25% N₂. After this process post-oxidation at ≈450°C in a gas mixture, air and dry air-like was conducted for an hour. The treated samples were characterized using the XRD, SEM, AFM, potentiodynamic polarization and Vickers microhardness tests. The outcome of combined processes showed the presence of ε and γ' nitrided phases in the inner compound layer and in the outer one mostly of magnetite phase and barely visible of hematite one without using H₂ in the post-oxidation process. Also in these processes, the corrosion potential proved to be lower in the treated specimens than the untreated ones, and the corrosion current decreased up to one order of magnitude when treated in environment air and air-like ambient.

Opis:
It is shown that the water vapor plasma processing offers modified Ti oxidation thermodynamics and kinetics over conventional, thermal oxidation. The 0.3-0.6 μm thick Ti films were sputter-deposited on silicon substrates and subsequently treated with low-pressure water vapor plasma at room temperature under continuous injection of water cloud vapor into the vacuum chamber from the heated water container. The changes of microstructure, phase composition, elemental composition and surface morphology upon the RF-power dissipated in plasma and treatment duration were investigated. We conclude that oxygen diffusion is enhanced in the presence of water vapor plasma, and deduce that fast $H^+$ transients because of their high mobility may be responsible for oxygen diffusion enhancement. This phenomenon can be explained as the result of two coexisting and competing reactions of oxidation and reduction on the surface. The different plasma reduction/oxidation state on the surface can be maintained by coordinated adjustment of an intensity of plasma radiation. Analysis of the experimental results is used to obtain important insights into the behavior of water molecules adsorbed on the oxidized titanium surfaces exposed to water vapor plasma at room temperature.

This paper presents the results of the research on the effect of the two different silanization methods on the thermal and structural properties of oxidized multiwalled carbon nanotubes. As-purified material was oxidized in the mixture of nitric and sulfuric acids. An oxidized material was divided into two parts which underwent two silanization treatments by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). The first experiment (I) was performed at room temperature in acetone (pH 7) for 30 min. The second experiment (II) involved a hydrolysis of APTES at 40°C in water (pH 4) for 3 h. The functionalization extent of the samples at each step of the preparation was investigated by the Raman spectroscopy. The presence of the functional groups on the nanotubes surface have been studied via the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The quantity of the external moieties introduced on multiwalled carbon nanotubes surface after oxidation process was estimated by the Boehms titration method. The high resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis allowed us to observe the changes of the morphology of the investigated carbon nanotubes. The influence of the silanization processes on the thermal stability of multiwalled carbon nanotubes was thoroughly studied by thermogravimetry analysis. There was observed a significant increase of the thermal stability of the multiwalled carbon nanotubes samples upon silanization treatment in respect of pristine and oxidized multiwalled carbon nanotubes.

To improve the stability of bone-material connection various surface modifications are applied to titanium based implants. Such new biomaterials require detailed characterization, including their biocompatibility. In the present study focused ion beam-scanning electron microscope tomography was applied to investigate the internal structure of ceramic coating as well as cell-material interface. Focused ion beam-scanning electron microscope tomography involves repeated focused ion beam milling and subsequent scanning electron microscope imaging of exposed sample surface and is followed by 3D reconstruction. This approach enables receiving additional information about the sample, unavailable at 2D images. The qualitative and quantitative investigation of pores in the ceramic coating was performed. The porosity of investigated volume: 8.5× 1.1× 3.9 μm³ was calculated as 24%. Additionally, based on 3D reconstruction the visualization of the coherent interface between cell and ceramic coating was done.

To determine the impact of an oxidizing Ar-H₂-H₂O/air dual atmosphere on the kinetics and mechanism of oxidation of the Crofer 22APU steel as compared to oxidation in a single atmosphere (Ar-H₂-H₂O or air), the oxidation kinetics of this steel were investigated both in single and dual reaction atmospheres at 1073 K during 100, 250, 500, and 1000 h of oxidation. Detailed morphological observations and the results of chemical composition analyses carried out using transmission electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed the presence of Fe in the scale formed on the cathode side in the dual atmosphere. Based on morphological observations (scanning- and transmission electron microscopies) and chemical and phase composition analyses (energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively) of the products of oxidation of the Crofer 22APU steel, and on the determined oxidation kinetics, a mechanism describing scale growth on both sides of the steel during its oxidation in conditions involving a gradient of the chemical potential of oxygen and hydrogen was proposed.

This paper reports on the study of structural modifications induced by the implantation process and by the subsequent thermal annealing in near-surface layers of Si single crystals implanted with Si$\text{}^{2+}$ ions of energy 140 keV and doses from 1×10$\text{}^{15}$ to 1× 10$\text{}^{16}$ ions/cm$\text{}^{2}$. The grazing incidence X-ray diffraction and X-ray reflectivity measurements were applied to determine the thickness and structural composition of the damaged layers. The fitted electron density profiles indicated an existence of an interfacial layer with density higher than the density of Si matrix or near-surface oxide layer. Formation of polycrystalline phases of silicon and silicon oxides is discussed in dependence on the conditions of annealing treatment and implantation dose.
