The morphology of solid phase products of thermal transformation of transition metal acrylates or its cocrystallites is studied. The thermal transformation of the metal-containing monomers studied consists in dehydration, solid phase polymerization and thermolysis process. The topography of the initial compounds and solid phase products of thermal decay, as well as their composition, are analyzed by optical and electron microscopies. The average particle sizes, d$\text{}_{EM}$, are: 6.0-13.0 nm in the case of FeAcr$\text{}_{6}$ (based on the data of electron diffraction, the main product is Fe$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{4}$), 6.0 nm for FeCoAcr$\text{}_{8}$ and Fe$\text{}_{2}$CoAcr$\text{}_{14}$ (Fe$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{4}$, CoO, Fe$\text{}_{2}$CoO$\text{}_{4}$), and 6 nm for CoMal$\text{}_{2}$ (CoO). The material formed consists of nanosized metal particles uniformly allotted in polymer matrix.

Opis:
The main aim of this paper is to show porosity evolution during application of various processing conditions including pressing, sintering and equal channel angular pressure. An aluminium based powder (Al-Mg-Si-Cu-Fe) was used as investigated material. After applying different pressing pressures (400 and 600 MPa), specimens were dewaxed in a ventilated furnace at 400C for 60 min. Sintering was carried out in a vacuum furnace at 610C for 30 min. The specimens were processed by single equal channel angular pressure pass. A significant disadvantage of powder metallurgy processing methods is the presence of porosity. Pores act as crack initiators and, due to their presence, the distribution of stress is inhomogeneous across the cross-section and leads to reduction of the effective load bearing area. The equal channel angular pressure process, causing stress distribution in deformed specimens, made the powder particles to squeeze together to such an extent that the initially interconnected pores transform to small isolated pores. The proposed safety diagram includes the combined effect of stress and strain behaviour during equal channel angular pressure. The "safety line" eliminates and quantifies the effect of large pores as a potential fracture initiation sites with respect to the mechanical viewpoint.

The effect of ethylene partial pressure and temperature on the hydrocarbon decomposition rate was studied. As a catalyst, a triply promoted iron catalyst (with addition of small amounts of potassium, calcium and alumina oxides) was used. The mean crystallites size was ca. 17 nm. The processes were performed using pure ethylene or ethylene-nitrogen mixture under atmospheric pressure at the temperature range from 400 to 460°C. The growth of carbon mass as a function of reaction time was measured using a thermobalance. The phase composition of the samples after ethylene decomposition was determined using X-ray diffraction technique. The reaction rate was independent of ethylene partial pressure in the range from 0.25 to 1 bar. The maximal carbon yield for given experimental conditions was estimated.

The structural, cohesive, and electronic properties of a fullerene-like $Zn_{n-x}Cd_{x}O_{n}$ (n=36) clusters have been investigated within the framework of the electron density hybride functional method (B3LYP) with a set of 3-21G(d) split valence basis functions. These clusters are used as a model in an investigation of the change in the band-gap width in the case of the substitution of Zn atoms by Cd atoms in the ZnO matrix in ZnCdO ternary structures. The presented investigations showed that a substitution of Zn atom to Cd (5.5, 11, 16.7, 22 and 33 at.% Cd) leads to reduction of cluster stability and monotonous decrease of energy gap (0.145, 0.259, 0.354, 0.436, 0.586 eV, accordingly).

This paper presents the results of research of C-Pd composite films obtained by the physical vapor deposition and chemical vapor deposition method. These films will be applied as hydrogen sensors. It has been examined whether the substrate has an impact on morphology and topologies of the C-Pd composite and whether the thermal conductivity of the substrate has an impact on the average size of the Pd nanoparticles. Substrates such as Al₂O₃, SiO₂, Si, and Mo were used, and in the physical vapor deposition process fullerene (C₆₀) and palladium acetate were deposited. Some of the samples were examined microscopically, while another part was modified in the chemical vapor deposition process in the presence of xylene. It was found that the average size of the Pd nanoparticles prepared in the physical vapor deposition process is independent of the substrate for all of the substrates used in the present experiment. During the chemical vapor deposition process an increase of the size of the Pd nanoparticles was observed - as expected. What is more, we noticed a weak relation between the size of the Pd nanoparticles and the type of substrate on which the C-Pd composite was deposited.

In this work, the effects of mechanical alloying on the mechanical properties of $BaTiO_3$ were investigated. In order to examine the milling conditions and sintering parameters on the solid state formation of $BaTiO_3$, X-ray diffraction technique was used. After mechanical alloying process, nanosized powder mixtures were produced. Sintering temperatures were 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000, and 1200C and sintering duration was 1 h. Besides X-ray diffraction examinations, mechanical properties of the $BaTiO_3$ samples were determined by Vickers microhardness test.

In this work, sol-gel method was used in order to synthesize ZnO nanoparticles. $Zn(CH_3COO)_2$·$2H_2O$ was used to obtain ZnO precursor solution. To investigate the effect of organic gelating agents on grain size, various organic gelating agents such as triethanolamine (TEA), glycerin (GLY), ethylene glycol (EG), citric acid (CA) and tartaric acid (TA) were used. X-ray diffraction analysis was used for phase identification and grain size calculation. ZnO powders were characterized by using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy.

The crystal and magnetic properties of $(Fe₈₀Nb₆B₁₄)_{1-x}Niₓ$ (x = 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4) bulk alloys prepared by making use of mould casting technique have been studied by X-ray diffraction, magnetostatic and Mössbauer effect methods. Structural and magnetic properties of investigated bulk alloys have been compared with polycrystalline $Fe_{1-x}Niₓ$ (x = 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4) alloys. The measurements have shown that the crystal and magnetic nonhomogeneity for bulk alloys are higher than in polycrystalline compounds, which confirms many magnetic wide magnetic hyperfine field distribution. The mean diameters of crystallites for $(Fe₈₀Nb₆B₁₄)_{1-x}Niₓ$ alloys was calculated from X-ray line broadening and were bigger than 10 nm. The mean magnetic moment and average magnetic hyperfine fields decrease with increase of nickel concentration in investigated compounds.

In this paper the microstructure and phase composition of ausferritic ductile iron alloy were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction methods. In order to obtain the nanoausferritic microstructure in the alloy, the austempering heat treatment was performed at relatively low temperature. As a result, a specific kind of microstructure, containing nanocrystalline ausferrite and retained austenite blocks, was obtained in each heat-treated sample. The volume fractions of phases were determined using different methods: MicroMeter software for scanning electron micrographs, stereological analysis for transmission electron micrographs, quantitative analysis of the X-ray diffraction spectra and magnetometer measurements. All methods revealed a high amount of retained austenite which varied as a function of the austempering treatment parameters. It was shown that the quantitative phase composition measured by X-ray diffraction and magnetometer, in all samples investigated, differs significantly from the stereological measurements and image analysis performed through the MicroMeter software. The possible reasons of the observed differences were discussed.

The super hydrophobic materials have inspired a great deal of interest and research in recent years because of their unique water-repellent, self-cleaning properties, and their potential for practical applications. This study aims to create a super hydrophobic clay surface from aqueous dispersions of a long-chain hydrocarbon, Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide (CTAB), and layered silicate via the solution intercalation method. First, to increase diffusing tendency of $CTA^{+}$ions from aqueous medium to the interlayer region of clay, long-chain hydrocarbon agent was dispersed in aqueous surfactant solution via hydrophobic interactions between the tails of $CTA^{+}$ ions and hydrocarbon chains. Then, the adsorption of the long tailed ions of CTAB on the surface of the clay layers was carried out. Effects of variables, such as temperature, initial surfactant concentration and hydrocarbon dosage onto the adsorbed amount of $CTA^{+}$ ions were investigated by considering the zeta potentials and contact angle values of organo-clay particles. The results show that by intercalation of the long tailed $CTA^{+}$ ions to the interlayer galleries of clay, high hydrophilic clay can be possible to convert to super hydrophobic clay. Also, the static contact angle values of organo-clay particles progressively increase with the increasing amount of hydrocarbon. The static contact angle value of powder organo-clay is about 150°, indicating its super hydrophobic character. XRD pattern and HRTEM images for the organo-clay confirm the intercalated structures.

ZnO, Co doped ZnO (ZnO:Co) and CoO thin films were deposited on glass substrates by using the spark discharge technique with Zn-Zn, Zn-Co and Co-Co metal electrodes (tips). The structural and optical properties of the films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy measurements and UV-Vis spectrometry. Cubic phase reflection of CoO (200) was observed in the samples containing Co. The size of nanoparticles had varied between 38 nm and 200 nm in ZnO thin films. When Co electrode was used, spherical structure had deteriorated and clusters of particles, with smaller radii, were observed. In addition, when Co-Co electrode pairs were used, various cavities with different sizes were formed. Especially, it was observed that the optical transmittance had generally increased with the decreasing spark (charge) voltage, while increasing with the number of sparks. The Co-containing samples were green in color and it was observed that the loss of transmission appears in a specific region in the Co-doped ZnO thin films due to characteristic d-d transition of Co²⁺ ions. The thickness of the films had decreased with the increasing number of sparks. In addition, the band gap energy, E_{g}, evaluated by UV-Vis spectroscopy measurements has been shifted to higher wavelengths (red shift) for the ZnO:Co thin films.

The structural, cohesive and electronic properties of fullerene-like isolated Zn₄₄Cd₄O₄₈ cluster with consideration of CdO phase clusterization are studied in the frames of density functional theory B3LYP/3-21G(d). It is revealed that an enlargement of CdO phase content in Zn₄₄Cd₄O₄₈ cluster leads to nonlinear rapid increase in cohesive energy and cluster stability, as well as band-gap energy shrinkage.

In this work, we investigate the formation of silicon nanocrystals in annealed low pressure chemical vapor deposition in situ nitrogen doped silicon thin films $(SiN_x)$ obtained at low temperature (465°C) by using a mixture of disilane $(Si_2H_6)$ and ammonia $(NH_3)$. Results show that nitrogen content in films plays an important role in defining the obtained films morphology in terms of crystallites sizes and their distribution. Indeed, according to the nitrogen content introduced in films, the crystalline state of films varies from a submicron crystalline structure to a nanocrystalline structure. An average silicon nanocrystalline size of 10 nm was obtained for film with x = 0.07 nitrogen content, annealed under a temperature of 850C during 2 h.

Crystalline nanocomposite KDP/Al₂O₃ was obtained by growth of KDP nanocrystals inside nanopores of amorphous alumina matrix (Al₂O₃) with pores diameter of 35 nm. Performed atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that Al₂O₃ matrix is filled up with a tetragonal phase KDP nanocrystals in preferred crystallographic orientation [100]. The nonlinear optical response was studied by means of second harmonic generation via the Maker fringe technique employing picosecond laser pulses at wavelength of 1064 nm. The polarization dependent second harmonic generation response was observed mainly due to the macroscopic crystalline structure anisotropy of KDP/Al₂O₃ nanocomposite. The investigation of such type of nanocomposites which combine nanoscale nonlinear optical materials has a great importance since they may improve the performance of entire system.
