Opis:
The electronic structure of the doped perovskite manganese oxides La$\text{}_{1-x}$Sr$\text{}_{x}$MnO$\text{}_{3}$ and La$\text{}_{1-x}$Ba$\text{}_{x}$MnO$\text{}_{3}$ has been investigated by X-ray photoelectron and X-ray emission spectroscopy. By comparing the O K$\text{}_{α}$ and Mn L$\text{}_{α}$ X-ray emission spectra with the valence band X-ray photoelectron spectra we could localize the Mn 3d and O 2p states into the valence band. Our data are compared with previous band structure calculations. The value of the Mn 3s splitting does not change with Sr-doping in the concentration region from x=0.0 till x=0.3. This shows that the doping holes have mainly oxygen p character. The large value of the splitting indicates that the 3d electrons are in the high-spin state.

Optical transitions in photofield emission from barium covered tungsten were observed. The initial energies of the excited electrons obtained for different crystallographic planes range near the values of s₁ = -0.07 ± 0.02 eV and s₂ = -0.28 ± 0.04 eV with respect to the Fermi level. The energies are ascribed to electrons in the thin barium layer. The work functions of the barium covered tungsten (100), (111) and (100) planes were estimated using field emission method. In order to measure very small photocurrents a modulated laser radiation and the phase-sensitive detection were used.

Diffusion of titanium was examined in the field emission microscope using the fluctuation autocorrelation method. A thick titanium layer (about three monolayers) deposited on a tungsten tip was used. A temperature range of 1260-1410 K was found where diffusion can be described in a hydrodynamic approximation. In this temperature range the diffusion coefficient seems to comply with Arrhenius rule for the activation energy of 1.31 eV and D$\text{}_{0}$ = 3×10$\text{}^{-7}$ cm$\text{}^{2}$s.

A new technique of measurements of field emission current fluctuations is proposed. The technique uses fiber optics and offers such advantages as the possibility to easily vary the geometry of the probed regions and the distance between them on the field emitter. The correlation functions of field emission current fluctuations have been measured with this technique for O/W(110), H/W(110), Si(111) and Na/Si(111) systems. Some data on surface diffusion coefficients are derived from the measurements.

In a field emission tube with two probe-holes the cross-correlation functions of current fluctuations from potassium submonolayers on tungsten have been investigated. The measurements were carried out in the temperature range of 290-430 K and with coverages between 0.05 and 0.87. The experimental correlation curves were approximated by a sum of three exponential functions revealing three components with different time constants τ$\text{}_{i}$ and amplitudes R. The temperature dependence of the amplitudes R$\text{}_{2}$ and R$\text{}_{3}$ is discussed in terms of collective flip-flop processes.

Opis:
Interaction of hydrogen with vanadium layers preadsorbed on a thermally cleaned tungsten field emitter was studied at room temperature and 78 K through measurements of the total work function changes. An increase in the work function followed by its slight decrease at higher exposure can be understood taking into account the possibility of negatively (β$\text{}^{-}$) and positively (β$\text{}^{+}$) polarized adspecies formation on thin vanadium layer. This process leads to vanadium hydride formation. The work function results suggest that hydrogen diffusion into the vanadium layer is meaningful at room temperature. Thermal desorption of hydrogen adsorbate carried out within the temperature range 409-461 K from thin vanadium layer (Θ$\text{}_{V}$ = 40) provided a value of 127 ± 6 kJ/mol for the activation energy for desorption.

Opis:
Field stimulated surface diffusion of lithium on atomically clean (100) and (111) germanium single crystal planes has been investigated by means of field emission method. Sealed-off field emission tube with a channel multiplier was used. The surface density of lithium adatoms on the germanium surface was determined applying a standard tungsten (112) crystal plane. The dependences of the surface diffusion activation energy on the applied electric field at different lithium coverages lave been obtained. The initial dipole moment of Li adatoms on the Ge (100) and (111) planes was then determined. The values 1.3 ± 0.2 and 1.0 ± 0.2 debye obtained for the Li-Ge (100) and Li-Ge (111) systems respectively are in good agreement with the ones calculated from the work function measurements. The reverse effect of the field influence on the surface diffusion of lithium on Ge (100) and (111) planes has been observed as the second lithium layer is filling. Relative contributions of the peculiarities of semiconductor substrate and alkali adsorbate on the properties of adsystems are discussed on the basis of experimental results.

Opis:
Adsorption of an Η$\text{}_{2}$O layer onto a Pt field emitter tip under the influence of an electric field and the surface diffusion of water were studied by using the field electron microscopy method. The presence of a negative field (field electron microscopy mode of operation), examined in the range of 33-44 MV/cm, significantly reduced the water coverage on the emitter at temperatures above 120 K. The reduction could also occur upon drawing a high density field emission current when the emitter was kept at 78 K. Surface diffusion of water, which was observed in the temperature range 120-132 K, corresponded to the "unrolling the carpet" mechanism and started from a water multilayer to a surface region water- and/or hydrogen-submonolayer covered. This was accompanied by the transition process from the state of the current- and field-induced redistribution of Η$\text{}_{2}$O to the state of thermal equilibrium. The activation energy of the diffusion was found to be 19 and 25 kJ/mol depending on the crystallographic direction. A positive electric field of 44 MV/cm, which was applied at temperatures of the substrate in excess of 121 K, decreased the field emission of the system and raised the desorption temperature of the layer over 720 K. It is assumed that the negative electric field causes reorientation of Η$\text{}_{2}$O molecules at the surface of platinum tip. The positive as well as negative electric fields promote the field desorption of water, which is in accordance with the results reported before.

Using the photofield emission method, surface states and bulk excitations from clean and residual gas adsorbed (111) face of tungsten were measured. Residual gas shaded the surface states and diminished photoemission from the bulk excitations. Gas of the artificially increased background pressure 10$\text{}^{-8}$ Pa adsorbed during the measurement deforms the photocurrent-voltage characteristic; the optical excitations observed for clean surfaces are exhibited, diminished or lost. For the adsorbed (111) face the state related to the metal-gas surface has been observed.

The influence of lattice vibrations on the field ionization rate of shallow donors in germanium at low lattice temperatures is investigated experimentally and theoretically. The role played by acoustic phonons in the tunnelling of electrons from the ground donor level (phonon assisted tunnelling) and through the excited donor levels (phonon activated tunnelling) is considered. Both processes are shown to enhance the tunnelling rate.

In this work the field ion microscopy technique was used in order to examine hydrogen-induced changes in palladium surface structure in the context of surface palladium hydrides formation. The goal of the study is to determine the crystallographic planes on which the particles of interest are formed with greatest intensity. Employing a method which consists in finding the differences in the brightness of field ion microscopy images we found that the structures of palladium surface hydrides, the size of which varies from 1 to 30 nm, develop mainly on {110} planes of palladium.
