Opis:
We review the dynamics of some of the more relevant optical processes in semiconductor quantum wells. We concentrate on the linear regime and study the time evolution of the light emission, using time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. In intrinsic materials, excitonic effects determine their optical properties. Here we describe the formation and recombination of excitons, and the dependence of these processes on lattice temperature, exciton density, and energy of the excitation light pulses. We also describe the dynamics of the exciton's spin by optical orientation experiments. We discuss the principal mechanisms responsible for the spin flip of the excitons and clarify the role of the exciton localization. Finally, we will show that exciton-exciton interaction produces a breaking of the spin degeneracy in two-dimensional semiconductors. In doped quantum wells, we show that the two spin components of an optically created two-dimensional electron gas are well described by the Fermi-Dirac distributions with a common temperature but different chemical potentials. The rate of the spin depolarization of the electron gas is found to be independent of the mean electron kinetic energy but accelerated by thermal spreading of the carriers.

We review studies on the coherent and incoherent exciton dynamics in ZnSe-based quantum wells. First, the exciton-exciton scattering parameter is determined from femtosecond four-wave mixing as a function of background exciton density generated by a prepulse. A linear increase in the excitonic homogeneous linewidth is found as a function of the background exciton density with significant different scattering parameters for the cases of interaction with coherent or incoherent excitons. Second, the thermalization dynamics of spectrally narrow hot-exciton distributions is investigated by time-resolved phonon sideband spectroscopy. Thermalization assisted by acoustic phonons occurs on a 100 ps timescale, which is in good agreement with model calculations in time dependent perturbation theory.

In the case of La$\text{}_{0.67}$Ca$\text{}_{0.33}$MnO$\text{}_{3}$/SrTiO$\text{}_{3}$, the subsequent reflectance dynamics at low temperatures is determined to be substrate-induced strain that drives the sample into a metastable state characterized by an increased number of paramagnetic domains.

Ultrafast excited-state relaxation process has been studied with zinc porphyrin dimers and circular trimer. Following 80 fs excitation at Soret band (420 nm) or Q band (580 nm) of zinc porphyrin, the fluorescence decay curves exhibit ultrafast decays with lifetimes of 80 fs in o-dimer, 450 fs in trimer and 540 fs in m-dimer. The timeresolved fluorescence spectra show that the fast decay process correspond to disappearance of monomer-like emission followed by red-shifted and broaden spectra. These ultrafast processes are assigned as due to excitation transfer among monomers and delocalization of excitation yielding excitonic states.

Opis:
Ultrafast carrier dynamics caused by photoexcitation in quasi-one-dimensional two-leg ladder cuprate $Sr_4Ca_{10}Cu_{24}O_{41}$ was investigated by the femtosecond reflection spectroscopy. After the photoexcitation along the leg direction, the transient reflectivity changes (Δ R/R) in the mid-infrared region showed instant decrease within 150 fs. The suppressed Δ R/R increased so rapidly on the picosecond time scale that the reflectivity value finally became larger than that in the initial state. Such a successive response in Δ R/R, which was also observed in other photon energy regions, is discussed in terms of ultrafast variation of the Drude weight in the ladder system by the photoirradiation.

The new experiments on the response of electrons in semiconductors to femtosecond optical pulses call for developing adequate theoretical tools. A promising approach has been found in using the non-equilibrium Green functions approximately factorized on the basis of the so-called generalized Kadanoff-Baym ansatz. The present work investigates the validity of such approach on an example of a semiconductor with an alloy scattering, where the coherent potential approximation allows to construct the non-equilibrium Green functions directly, so that an explicit comparison with the ansatz decoupling is possible. The ansatz for the electron distribution is in this case justified as far as the quasiparticle picture for the individual electrons is appropriate.

We describe the design, construction, and use of fiber-coupled terahertz antennas for performing ultrafast coherent THz spectroscopy directly in the cryogenic bore of high-field magnets. With an aim towards measuring the high-frequency (100 GHz to 2000 GHz) complex conductivity of correlated electron materials in the regime of low temperatures and high magnetic fields, these miniature THz emitters and receivers are demonstrated to work down to 1.5 K and up to 18 T, for eventual use in higher-field magnets. Results from a variety of semiconducting and superconducting samples are presented. This paper also describes a separate effort towards achieving coupling between colloidal semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots, wherein we realize and study inter-dot communication via resonant (Förster) energy transfer. We present studies of the dynamics of resonant energy transfer in monodisperse and energy gradient (layered) assemblies of CdSe nanocrystal quantum dots. Time- and spectrally-resolved photoluminescence data directly reveal the energy-dependent transfer rate of excitons from smaller to larger dots. Results from layered nanocrystal quantum dot assemblies demonstrate unidirectional energy flows, a first step towards artificial light-harvesting structures. Lastly, time-resolved studies at millikelvin temperatures elucidate the nature of ground-state"dark" excitons in these quantum dots.

Optical pump-and-probe experiments performed at the nanosecond timescale on Cd$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Te are reviewed. Recent studies have established that for low excitation densities thermo-magnetic modulations of the reflectivity prevail against other possible modulations. Hence the relaxation time of the signal directly reflects the spin relaxation of the Mn ions. Detailed studies of the modulation mechanisms give the opportunity to investigate some fundamental magneto-optical properties of the diluted magnetic semiconductors, otherwise beyond reach, such as the paramagnetic shift of the gap in the dilute regime.

Nonequilibrium photoexcited carrier dynamics in InP:Cu was investigated by two experimental techniques: the time-resolved photoluminescence up-conversion and the transient photoconductivity measurement. Both measurements show that doping with copper significantly modifies the photoexcited carrier relaxation in indium phosphide. There are several strong indications that this effect originates from the carrier trapping at metallic precipitates.

Opis:
Using interdisciplinary fields relevant to a highly excited semiconductor - nonequilibrium phenomena in high density plasma, light-induced changes of optical properties, and dynamic holography, we developed time-resolved four-wave mixing technique for monitoring the spatial and temporal carrier dynamics in wide band-gap semiconductors. This opened a new possibility to analyse fast electronic processes in a non-destructive "all-optical" way, i.e. without any electrical contacts. This technique allowed evaluation of recombination and transport processes and the determination of important carrier parameters which directly reveal the material quality: carrier lifetime, bipolar diffusion coefficients, surface recombination rate, nonlinear recombination rate, diffusion length, threshold of stimulated recombination. The recent experimental studies of differently grown group III-nitrides (heterostructures and free standing films) as well silicon carbide epilayers by nondegenerate picosecond four-wave mixing are presented.

We present a time-resolved study of the light emission of a CdTe-based microcavity. In the nonlinear regime, under high excitation conditions, in the strong coupling regime, we observe pronounced beats of the intensity of the photoluminescence arising from the bottleneck region of the exciton-polariton band. These beats are very sensitive to the excitation density and vanish under weak pumping conditions. We attribute the beats to a new nonlinear coupling mechanism of optically active and dark crystal states, related to polariton-polariton scattering, which leads to mixing between bright and dark states.

Water-soluble porphyrin, 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl- 21H,23H-porphine-tetrasulfonic acid (TPPS), forms J-aggregate in aqueous solution depending on experimental conditions such as pH, dye concentration, and/or ionic strength. The steady-state fluorescence and picosecond single-photon timing spectroscopy were applied for protonated monomer and J-aggregate in aqueous solution and in thin films to reveal the dynamics in the S$\text{}_{2}$ and S$\text{}_{1}$ states. The S$\text{}_{2}$ fluorescence spectra from the protonated monomer and J-aggregate were observed in addition to the normal S$\text{}_{1}$ fluorescence. The lifetime of the S$\text{}_{2}$ state was estimated to be ≈5 ps for J-aggregate, whereas the lifetime is shorter than 1 ps for protonated TPPS monomer. The mesoscopic structures of J-aggregate in thin film with and without polymer on the glass surface were examined by scanning near-field optical microscopy. With the surface topography and scanning near-field optical microscopy transmission images, TPPS J-aggregate was found to form a long and narrow tube-like structure which has a few μm length, 0.2-0.5 μm width, and 5-30 nm height. An unidirectional orientation of the structure was also found, which may be originated from the spin-coating process.

New powerful sources and advanced analytical techniques have been considered in the last decade to face up the continuously increasing scientific demands, in particular, in materials science. As an example, nano- science and nanotechnology researches are characterized by ultimate spatial resolution, fast and ultrafast time-resolved analysis, but the complexity of the investigated phenomena requires new analytical capabilities and new experimental techniques were introduced in the research arena. The availability all over the world of brilliant synchrotron radiation sources offers incredible opportunities. Many challenging experiments were made possible by these sources and understanding of many complex dynamical problems was obtained. Nevertheless, a strong demand of new analytical approaches, mainly based on concurrent and possibly simultaneous time-resolved experimental techniques, is emerging. Pioneering time resolved experiments combining X-ray and infrared radiation with a conventional source were performed more than a decade ago. Nowadays, many beamlines at third generation synchrotron radiation facilities are equipped with conventional sources to allow complementary techniques and the strategy of a concurrent analysis is mandatory in the investigation of many phenomena in frontier multidisciplinary researches. Moreover, new opportunities will be available by means of concurrent spectroscopic experiments investigating complex phenomena on a short timescale, from the sub-second to the microsecond time domain. We will present and discuss researches where the combination of IR and X-ray simultaneous experiments may return unique information on complex dynamical processes and phase transitions occurring in materials science. Finally, we will briefly describe the conceptual layout of a synchrotron radiation beamline to perform concurrent IR and X-ray experiments.

The hyperpolarizabilities of several pseudoazulenes are evaluated using a semiempirical quantum chemistry package MOPAC-93 and compared with hyperpolarizabilities of simple molecules like chloroform, benzene, naphthalene and azulene. The third-order hyperpolarizability γ is measured for a derivative of 1,2-5,6 dibenzoxalene using a femtosecond Z-scan method at 800 nm. The resulting hyperpolarizability of 1.7×10-34 esu corroborates the theoretical prediction that pseudoazulene structures behave similar to other aromatic molecules provided the experiments are carried out in a non-resonant regime.
