Opis:
Tunneling conductance spectra of point-contact junctions formed by a sharp Ag tip and two optimally doped manganites La$\text{}_{0.67}$Sr$\text{}_{0.33}$MnO$\text{}_{3}$ and Nd$\text{}_{0.67}$ Sr$\text{}_{0.33}$MnO$\text{}_{3}$ are measured and analyzed. It was found that the analytical dependence of the differential conductance on voltage strongly depends on the bias sign and dramatically changes after voltage treatments. The data obtained are explained in terms of the Glasman-Matveev model for tunneling across two localized states settled in the barrier near the manganite bulk. Effective functions of electron-boson interaction extracted from self-energy contributions to the experimental characteristics contain signs of phonon and magnon excitations, higher-energy satellites as a result of possible orbital ordering and a hallmark of localized states in the near-barrier region in the form of strong not-well reproduced peaks.

The elastic behavior of the sol-gel prepared double-layered manganite system $La_{1.2}Sr_{1.8-x}Ba_xMn_2O_7$ (x = 0.0-0.4) was investigated at 300 K, employing ultrasonic pulse transmission technique at 1 MHz. The values of elastic moduli and acoustic Debye temperature $(θ_D)$ were computed from longitudinal and shear velocities. The measured values were corrected to zero porosity using Hasselman and Fulrath's formula. The elastic constants of the samples, estimated using Modi's heterogeneous metal-mixture rule, were also reported. The variation of elastic moduli with Ba concentration was interpreted in terms of strength of interatomic bonding.

It was found that the response of grained La$\text{}_{0.67}$Ca$\text{}_{0.33}$MnO$\text{}_{3}$ films to microwave radiation is of thermal nature. A nonresonant method for measuring of the electric resistance of grains was developed. It allows one to avoid the influence of the magnetic field of the wave on the measurement results. The measurements of the temperature dependences of the grain electric resistance indicate that in the vicinity of the maximum-resistance temperature T$\text{}_{m}$, the intrinsic electric resistance of the grains is more than by two orders of magnitude lower than the film resistance measured by applying the dc current. The obtained experimental results agree well with those given by resonant techniques.

This work was dedicated to the preparation of a barium hexaferrite using the glass crystallization method. The glass flakes were treated at temperatures ranging between 550C and 750°C. The investigation carried out by X-ray diffraction revealed the phase composition and the mean crystallite size. By means of the scanning electron microscopy, the crystallite shape and average size were established. The electric and magnetic properties were investigated at room temperature by means of a Solartron 1260A impedance/gain phase analyzer and a vibrating sample magnetometer. The optimum heat treatment was established to obtain the maximum coercivity of the barium hexaferrite.

The utilization of classical ceramic technology for ferrite preparation permits to obtain strontium hexaferrite with big crystals, of micrometer size, with a smaller coercive force than the hexaferrite with submicron crystals. In this work the strontium hexaferrite was obtained with submicron crystals, by hot reduction of the hexaferrite obtained through ceramic technology in CO atmosphere, followed by the thermal re-oxidization in air. The effects of treatment in CO atmosphere and of the re-calcination treatment on the magnetic and electric properties of the strontium hexaferrite were investigated.

The microwave surface impedance of conductive ferromagnetic films hypothetically deposited on dielectric, metal and superconducting substrates was numerically investigated for the case when the film is tangentially magnetized. It was shown that the surface impedance is governed by the ferromagnetic film conductivity if the film is thin enough. Peculiarities of the impedance caused by the ferromagnetic resonance arise more clearly in thicker ferromagnetic films or in films deposited on substrates of higher permittivity or on metal and superconducting substrates. A ferromagnetic film strongly affects the surface impedance of superconducting material, especially, in the ferromagnetic resonance frequency region.

Structural properties were studied in the orthorhombic perovskite $La_{0.7}Dy_{0.3}Mn_{1-x}Zn_{x}O_3$, synthesized in the range 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.4. X-ray diffraction data, refined by the Rietveld analysis, shows for x < 0.1 the presence of stretched octahedra on the Mn-O plane, and, for x > 0.1, the existence of elongated octahedra along the c axis. Increased Zn doping causes a direct structural effect: one Zn atom distorts four neighboring MnO₆ octahedra on the Mn-O plane. It was observed that the unit cell volume containing Dy decreases as x increases, whereas the unit cell volume containing La increases as x decreases.

This paper presents the molar heat capacity at constant volume C_{V} and characteristic Debye temperature θ, determination for the garnet system, Y_{3-x}Fe_{5+x}O_{12}, x=0.0, 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 at 300 K. The θ values determined from Waldron's approach and those calculated using ultrasonic mean sound velocity, V_{mo}, are in agreement. C_{V} values calculated from the Einstein theory are consistent with the reported one and theoretically expected values using the Dulong-Petit law, but Waldron's approach based on the Debye theory and the Debye T³ law fail to estimate consistent C_{V} values. The result has been discussed in the light of key physical differences between the two theories. The applicability of the Kieffer model for molar heat capacity at constant pressure, C_{p}, determination has been tested. Finally, an attempt has been made to estimate electronic contribution and the temperature at which the lattice contribution and electronic contribution to the molar heat capacity become comparable.

A series of solid solutions La$\text{}_{0. 75-x}$Gd$\text{}_{x}$Ca$\text{}_{0.25}$MnO$\text{}_{3-δ}$ with 0.0≤x≤0.75 was prepared via carbonate precursor precipitation method. Final sintering was performed at 1250ºC in oxygen flow atmosphere. The samples obtained were characterized by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction measurements. Oxygen stoichiometry was analyzed by iodometric titration method. X-ray absorption spectroscopic methods of Mn L-edge and Mn K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure were used to study oxidation state of manganese in the solid solutions and elucidate features of their local crystal structure. Orthorhombic crystal structure characteristics of the solid solutions were refined by Rietveld method. An increase in oxygen deficiency and average manganese oxidation state were found to accompany Gd concentration increase in La$\text{}_{0.75-x}$Gd$\text{}_{x}$Ca$\text{}_{0.25}$MnO$\text{}_{3-δ}$. These results are consistent with Mn L-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure spectra, where a gradual change of Mn oxidation state with Gd concentration increase was detected. Origins of oxygen deficiency La$\text{}_{0.75- x}$Gd$\text{}_{x}$Ca$\text{}_{0.25}$MnO$\text{}_{3-δ}$ are discussed in terms of structural disorder caused by Gd substitution for La.

The structural, magnetic, and electrical transport properties of Sn-doped manganite La$\text{}_{0.67}$Ca$\text{}_{0.33}$Mn$\text{}_{1-x}$ Sn$\text{}_{x}$O$\text{}_{3-δ}$ (x=0, 0.01, 0.03, andδ≈0.06) compounds were studied using X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, AC susceptometer and vibrating sample magnetometer measurements as well as four-probe resistance measurements. The specific heat was measured by the heat-pulse method. The Curie temperature T$\text{}_{C}$ and the metal-insulator transition temperature T$\text{}_{M-I}$ decreased nonlinearly with increasing Sn content. The T$\text{}_{C}$ and T$\text{}_{M-I}$ values, for the x=0, 0.01, and 0.03 compounds were separated by 18.2 K, 66.3 K, and 10 K, respectively. The resistivity above T$\text{}_{C}$ for all of these compounds followed the Mott variable-range-hopping model. This allowed the estimation of the localization lengths of 2.2Å (x = 0), 1.33Å (x=0.01) and 1.26Å (x=0.03). The x=0 and x=0.01 compounds exhibited anomalies of R(T) at corresponding T$\text{}_{C}$ and allowed the separation of the magnitude of the purely magnetic contribution to the resistance which for x=0 was≈5 .7Ω and for x=0.01,≈22 .4Ω. The specific heat of the Sn-free sample exhibited a sharp peak at T$\text{}_{C}$. With increasing Sn content the peak at T$\text{}_{C}$ broadened and the area under the peak decreased. For x= 0.03 the peak was hardly detectable. Our results on La$\text{}_{0.67}$Ca$\text{}_{0.33}$ Mn$\text{}_{1-x}$Sn$\text{}_{x}$O$\text{}_{3}$ reveal that a small substitution of Sn$\text{}^{4+}$ for Mn$\text{}^{4+}$ suppresses double exchange interactions and strongly affects the magnetic, thermal, and transport properties of the parent compound.

Formation of high resistance interlayer was indicated between the adjacent conducting Fe3O4 and LaNiO3 layers. However, relatively low interface resistivity of about 0.1 Ω cm$\text{}^{2}$ (at T=300 K) was estimated for the patterned Fe3O4/In2O3〈Sn〉 bilayer structures. Influence of strong electric field in wide frequency range (from DC to 35 GHz) on electrical resistance of thin La$\text{}_{0.67}$Ca$\text{}_{0.33}$MnO$\text{}_{3}$ polycrystalline manganite films was investigated in the range of (78÷300) K. Different behavior of resistance change vs. temperature was observed when pulsed DC electric field and microwaves were applied to the films. When pulsed DC electric field is applied the electric-field-induced resistance change ("electroresistance") of manganite film depended nearly monotonically on temperature. However, in microwave electric fields a non-monotonic character of the electroresistance temperature dependence was observed. The dependence of the electroresistance on quality of manganite films was observed in case of microwaves. The experimental findings are explained assuming different electrical current mechanisms in case of DC and microwave fields. The applied voltage drops mainly across the grains of polycrystalline film due to a presence of displacement currents in case of microwaves, whereas in DC case the voltage drop is across the grain boundaries.

Perovskites AMO$\text{}_{3-δ}$ attain unique electronic, magnetic, ferroelectric, thermoelectric, mixed-conducting, and other functional properties through selection of the A- and M-site ions, their fractions, ionic sizes and valences, spin states, and orbital orderings, as well as the oxygen content and vacancy ordering. We illustrate here our systematic exploration of the effects of composition, temperature, pressure, and oxygen content on the thermodynamic stability and magnetic properties for La$\text{}_{1-x-y}$Sr$\text{}_{x}$Ba$\text{}_{y}$MnO$\text{}_{3}$ manganites. Parameters controlling magnetic transitions are identified through examples of single-valent compounds of RMnO$\text{}_{3}$ (the Mn-O-Mn bond angles that can be equivalently described in terms of the tolerance factor) and Sr$\text{}_{1-x}$Ca$\text{}_{x}$MnO$\text{}_{3}$ (the tolerance factor and disorder described in terms of the variance of A-site ion sizes), and the mixed-valent La$\text{}_{0.5}$Sr$\text{}_{0.5-y}$Ba$\text{}_{y}$MnO$\text{}_{3}$ (the tolerance factor, variance of sizes, and the local strains described in terms of the elongated Mn-O bonds). By using an example of kinetically stable, atomically-ordered layered-perovskites we show that improved useful properties, such as the increase in the Curie temperature T$\text{}_{C}$ and enhancement of colossal magneto-resistive effect at room temperature, can be achieved through decreases in structural distortions such as variance of sizes and local strains.

The effects of strong pulsed electric field on the electrical properties of thin epitaxial $La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_3$ films were investigated. The fast electrical switching from high resistance off-state to low resistance on-state was obtained at current densities higher than $10^6 A//cm^2$. This current was able to induce an irreversible damage of the sample in the regions at the edges of the electrodes of the film. It was demonstrated that thermal effects are responsible for appearance of delay time and asymmetrical shape of current channel in on-state, however, the fast switching from off- to on-state is a result of electronic effects appearing when critical power is reached in the film.

Opis:
The advantages of the use of high energy laser systems in a counter rocket, artillery and mortar projectile mission are described. The history of the development of directed energy weapons in the United States Army and the current high energy laser programs and technologies are outlined. The U.S. Army vision for future ground combat relies on high mobility, lightweight systems with improved survivability. Without the protection afforded by heavy armor, other methods for protecting assets and personnel are required. The Army is now developing the technologies for a future mobile solid state laser weapon system to defeat a wide range of air and ground threats, working to get these revolutionary weapons to our soldiers in the near future.

Opis:
Explosive pulsed power consists of those devices that convert the chemical energy in explosives into electrical energy. In 2004, a series of programs were initiated to develop several types of very compact explosive pulsed power generators. Based on these recent efforts, we now have a better understanding of the weaknesses and strengths of these small generators. As a result, we can now build reliable generators that provide consistent output currents and voltages. In this paper, a brief introduction to these generators will be given along some of the most recent advances in our understanding of them. A description of an explosive driven high power microwave test bed being built at Texas Tech will be presented. This test bed can be used to test the effects of electromagnetic radiation on electronics. A brief description of some applications of explosive pulsed power will also be presented.

Opis:
X-ray imaging technology is a useful and leading medical diagnostic tool for health care professionals to diagnose disease in human body. Carbon nanotube based X-ray source, which we have developed in this study, could be also useful and supply integrated diagnostic X-ray imaging tool in diagnosis. Conventionally, thermionic type of tungsten filament X-ray tube is widely employed in the field of biomedical and industrial application fields. However, intrinsic problems, such as poor emission efficiency, low imaging resolution, and high electrical energy consumption etc., may cause the limitation of using the X-ray tube. To fulfill the current market requirement, specifically for medical diagnostic field, we have developed rather a portable and compact carbon nanotube based X-ray device in which microfocus high imaging resolution can be feasible.

Transport properties of 10μm to 30μm wide grain-boundary junctions ion-etched in thin colossal magnetoresistance La$\text{}_{0. 7}$Sr$\text{}_{0.3}$MnO$\text{}_{3}$ films deposited on a SrTiO$\text{}_{3}$ bi-crystal were investigated. We have measured the current-voltage characteristics in the temperature range from 4.2 K to 300 K without applied magnetic field, as well as the magnetoresistance at magnetic fields up to±10 kOe directed parallel to the film surface, both perpendicular and parallel to the direction of current flow through the junctions. The investigated junctions have nonlinear current-voltage characteristics in this temperature range and consist of several magnetic domains. The maximum magnetoresistance (R(H)-R $\text{}_{max}$)/R$\text{}_{max}$, measured at 1 kOe was -17.6% at 4.1 K.

Opis:
The resistance, magnetoresistance, and resistance response under microwave irradiation (f=10 and 35 GHz) were measured for epitaxial and polycrystalline La$\text{}_{0.67}$Ca$\text{}_{0.33}$MnO$\text{}_{3}$ and La$\text{}_{0.67}$Sr$\text{}_{0.33}$MnO$\text{}_{3}$ thin films in the temperature range 78÷300 K. The microwave induced resistance increase observed for the epitaxial films in a narrow temperature range below the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition temperature T$\text{}_{c}$ certifies coexistence of low resistance (ferromagnetic) and high resistance (paramagnetic) regions in the manganites. Resistance of polycrystalline films decreased under microwave irradiation in a wide temperature range below T$\text{}_{c}$. The effect was explained in terms of microwave assisted hopping of carriers in high resistance regions formed at grain boundaries of the polycrystalline films.

Opis:
We present new experimental evidence indicating the importance of magnetic field component of microwave field (f=9.4 GHz) for magnetoresistive properties of polycrystalline La$\text{}_{0.7}$Ca$\text{}_{0.3}$MnO$\text{}_{3}$ films. The microwave measurements revealed a different character of the temperature-dependent electrical resistance of polycrystalline La$\text{}_{0.7}$Ca$\text{}_{0.3}$MnO$\text{}_{3}$ films placed in the centre (maximal amplitude of H$\text{}_{10}$ wave vector) and at a narrow wall of the wave-guide (reduced H$\text{}_{10}$ amplitude). Theoretical estimations of the influence of substrate onto distribution of microwave electric and magnetic fields in the waveguide were performed using the finite-difference time-domain method.
