Opis:
Knowing that conductivity is a temperature function σ = f(T) allows us to estimate the thermal stability of collagen preparations from fish skin. Measurements can provide information, which is crucial for technologies applying this type of collagen. Conductivity σ measurements were performed in a constant electric field E = 1 kV/m, in the temperature range of 290-480 K. White collagen lyophilisate was used as control material. It contained neither elastin nor melanin dopants nor non-organic dopants such as gold, copper, silver or zinc. Gold, copper, silver and zinc belong to the group of transitional metals and they have intermediate properties of both alkaline metals and metals in the p block of the periodic table. The common feature of most of these elements is their ability to form coordination complexes of intense color. In the measured materials peaks were found in the temperature range of 303-323 K. Peak temperature and its shape depend on the type of material. In the case of nano-gold doping a drop in peak temperature and a decrease in conductivity were observed. The measured materials are characterized by lower thermal resistance than bovine collagen. Nevertheless, thermal stability of fish skin collagen is high enough for fish skin collagen to replace bovine collagen. The measurement results obtained for white collagen and white collagen with $Zn^{2+}$ may indicate better bonding of free water. The presence of nano-silver and nano-copper as doping agents in graphite collagen may lead to a decrease in hygroscopy of the material and, as a result, may increase its resistance to bacteria.

Opis:
Collagen is the major biopolymer of a living organism, which physical properties depend on water content. The observed transmission of spongiform encephalophaties (BSE) to humans resulted in the development of new sources of collagen. Fish skin seems to be one of such safe sources of collagen. Measurements of electrical conductivity as a function of temperature provides information, among other things, on the water release process. Experiment was carried out for fish skin (FSC) collagen (type I) and bovine Achilles tendon collagen (type I). Each sample was heated two times. Current-voltage characteristic was determined for FSC collagen to determine the range, within which the relation is linear. The primary differences appeared to be in electric conductivity, which was higher for FSC collagen than for BAT collagen. Electric conductivity varied from 10^{-6} S/m to 10^{-10} S/m depending on material and temperature. The process of free and bound water release was manifested as a peak on electrical conductivity-temperature curve between 320-350 K. The activation energy of the charge conduction process, determined on the basis of the Arrhenius plot, was material dependent and considerably higher for FSC collagen.

For the retrieval of best polymers for effective organic solar cells as testing parameter we have used the coefficient of bimolecular recombination (B). The B measurement demonstrated that in pure MEH-PPV layers its value is close to the value of Langevin recombination coefficient (B$\text{}_{L}$), while in case of perylene/MEH-PPV junction layers the ratio B/B$\text{}_{L}$≅0.013, and in blends of MEH-PPV with PCBM B/B$\text{}_{L}$<:0.01.

The temperature dependence of the electrical properties of heterojunctions with silicon formed by conductive organic polymer composites with networks of two complex tetracyanoquinodimethane salts (of N-n-butyl-isoquinolinium and of diethyl methyl sulphonium cations) were studied. We show that it is possible to prepare junctions with quite good rectifying properties, comparable to those obtained using other organic semiconductors. The observed forward-bias current-voltage characteristics can be satisfactorily fitted using the modified Schottky equation. Reverse bias and C-V characteristics show that the transport mechanism, especially in the case of p-Si junctions is more complicated and probably tunnelling between localized levels plays an important role.

In this report, a doped semiconducting ink consisting of a blended poly [2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene] (MEH-PPV) with aluminium-tris (8-hydroxychinolin) (Alq₃) and diluted in toluene is formulated. The intentional doping with the electron transport nanoparticle Alq₃ results in an additional band gap state of the hole transport MEH-PPV polymer and reduction of the switch on voltage of the organic LED display. Doping is probed at room temperature with photoluminescence spectroscopy. Photoluminescence results revealed that as the Alq₃ content increases in blends, characteristic peaks of intensities of MEH-PPV are broadened and reduced. In addition, the emission for Alq₃ concentrations between 30% and 60% are featured by a band at 565 nm (2.19 eV) for the lower concentration and consistently blue shifted to 530 nm (2.33 eV) for the higher concentration. This new band at 565 nm (2.19 eV) neither belongs to pure MEH-PPV nor to Alq₃ and evidences charge transfer from the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of the Alq₃ to the highest occupied molecular orbital of the MEH-PPV.

Opis:
We present high temperature dc, ac and contactless microwave conductivity results on solid-state C$\text{}_{60}$ (films and crystals) from room temperature up to 850 K. Heating pristine samples, which were exposed to the ambient atmosphere, under dynamic vacuum at first leads to a reduction of the electrical resistance and finally, above ≈700 K, to an increase in the resistance. The decrease is ascribed to oxygen desorption and the increase to the chemical reactivity of residual chemisorbed oxygen with the C$\text{}_{60}$ host molecules, respectively. Samples, annealed above 800 K, display a reversible temperature dependence of the resistance. The high temperature regime of their resistance exhibits an activated behaviour with an universal activation energy of 2E$\text{}_{a}$ = 1.85 ± 0.04 eV for crystals and films, which is identical to the HOMO-LUMO splitting of the C$\text{}_{60}$-molecules.

Opis:
In this paper we investigate different processes which lead to charge carrier generation in ITO/PEDOT:PSS/MEH-PPV/Al photodetector. Primary photogenerated singlet excitons contribute the photocurrent directly through dissociation on the electrodes. Singlet exciton distribution in the active area of the photodetector is calculated on the base of continuity equation including exciton generation, diffusion, and recombination. Depending on the applied electric field and incident photon flux secondary charge carrier generation processes appear in the active MEH-PPV film. Two bulk charge generation mechanisms are considered. Nonlinear recombination of excitons through exciton-exciton annihilation leads to electron and hole polaron generation. Exciton states are also depopulated by exciton dissociation in the presence of high electric field. We assume hole polarons to be majority charge carriers. Polaron contribution to photocurrent is calculated by solving the continuity and drift-diffusion equations for these carriers. Photocurrent spectra are measured for different bias voltages and different incident photon flux intensities. A good agreement between experimental and simulated data confirms our theoretical approach.

PVA and doped PVA films were prepared by solution casting. The Change in electrical conductivity of pure PVA and transition elements $FeCl_3$ and $NiCl_2 \cdot 6H_2O$ doped PVA films with and without γ-irradiation in the temperature range 50-130°C has been investigated using four point probe technique. The dc electrical conductivity increases with increase in dopant concentration, with temperature and γ-irradiation. The results revealed that γ-irradiation enhances the electrical conductivity. The variation of electrical conductivity σ with temperature, before and after irradiation is due to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding between $Fe^{3+}$ with OH group of PVA and $Ni^{2+}$ with OH group of PVA. We found that $Fe^{3+}$ doped PVA films show higher conductivity than $Ni^{2+}$ doped PVA films.

The microwave conductivity of the copper salt of DCNQI (N,N'-Dicyanoquinodiimine) with two methyl side groups (undeuterated, h$\text{}_{8}$), the fully deuterated salt (d$\text{}_{8}$), the salt with only the methyl groups deuterated and of alloys of undeuterated and deuterated salts was measured. The microwave conductivity (10.2 GHz) qualitatively follows the dc conductivity. The difference is in the window of diminished conductivity between phase transition and reentry, where the microwave conductivity is higher than the dc conductivity. This indicates the existence of a crystal fraction with higher (metallic) conductivity (portion: ≈ 1‰) not seen by dc methods.

Conducting reticulate doped polymeric films containing BEDT-TTF iodide crystalline networks have been annealed in order to transform the crystallites into crystal phases with metallic conductivity. The microwave conductivity of these films was measured before and after annealing. The temperature dependence of the conductivity changes dramatically with optimal annealing temperatures and times. This change in the behavior corresponds to the transformation of the α-phase into the superconducting α$\text{}_{t}$-phase observed in (BEDT-TTF)$\text{}_{2}$I$\text{}_{3}$ single crystals.

Recently developed photoconductive polymer systems, polyparacyclophanes doped with low-molecular-weight acceptors, combine high charge carrier mobility provided by extended π-electron systems along cofacially arrayed aromatic rings, with effective photogeneration in visible range due to formation of charge-transfer complexes with the dopants. In a series of polyparacyclophane complexed with different benzoquinones it was found that the photoconductivity gain coefficient in the visible range increases with increasing electron affinity of the dopant and that the gain coefficient is higher for higher dopant concentration. The influence of the charge-transfer complex formation between various polyparacyclophanes and various acceptors on the charge carrier generation both in the dark and under illumination is discussed.

AC electrical properties of sandwich devices composed of thermally evaporated thin films of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) with aluminum and gold electrodes (Al/CuPc/Au) are investigated over frequency (f) range of $10^2 - 10^5$ Hz and temperature range of 293-453 K. Morphology of the samples was studied via field emission scanning electron microscope images and X-ray diffraction micrographs. The X-ray diffraction micrograph indicates the configuration of α-CuPc with the (510) plane as the preferred orientation. UV-Vis absorption spectrum was analyzed and the optical band-gap energy of CuPc thin film was determined to be 2.81 ± 0.01 eV. Capacitance increased with increasing temperature especially for $f = 10^2$ Hz. Loss factor decreased considerably with increasing frequency to a minimum value at about $f = 10^4$ Hz and increased afterwards. Capacitance is generally independent of frequency for T ≤ 413 K; however it decreases remarkably with increasing frequency for T > 413 K. The conductivity increases quite noticeably with increasing frequency particularly for T ≤ 413 K. The AC electrical characteristics are in good agreement with Goswami and Goswami model. According to our data, at high temperatures, the band theory is applicable in describing the conduction process, whereas hopping mechanism is dominant at low temperatures.

Fluoranthene and perylene radical cation salts are quasi-one-dimensional conductors, which show a Peierls transition to a charge-density-wave ground state. Radical cation salts with different stoichiometries composed of the aromatic donor molecules fluoranthene (Fa = C$\text{}_{16}$H$\text{}_{10}$) or perylene (Per = C$\text{}_{20}$H$\text{}_{12}$) and the counterion X¯ = PF¯$\text{}_{6}$ were investigated. We find that the temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity and the properties in the charge-density-wave ground state strongly depend on the composition of the crystals. When fluoranthene is replaced by perylene, the Peierls transition is shifted from 180 K to 120 K and the ground state energy gap decreases from values of 120-180 meV to 60-80 meV. In the charge-density-wave ground state the threshold field for nonlinear conductivity varies between 0.1 and 1 V/cm for different systems. Our results indicate that disorder, three-dimensional coupling and commensurability effects play an important role for the transport properties of these systems.
