Opis:
We study the development of ring luminescence of indirect excitons at macroscopical distances from the central excitation spot in quantum well structures. The Landau model for exciton condensation generalized for particles with finite lifetimes in conditions of inhomogeneous excitation is proposed. The transition between the fragmented and continuous rings and the temperature dependence of the effects are considered. The irradiation of the system by two spatially separated laser spots is simulated as well.

Opis:
Systematic studies of amplitude and energy changes of excitonic lines in a strong excitation regime were carried out by a pump-probe method. The series of samples containing quantum wells with well width from 80 Åto 140 Åwas investigated. One 80 Åsample was n-doped with iodine, the rest of the quantum wells were intentionally undoped but contained a 2D gas of free holes. Its density could be varied by changing an intensity of additional illumination. The resonant creation of high population of e1hh1 excitons causes the energetic blue shift of the same due to interactions between excitons. The blue shifts did not depend on the concentration of 2D gas of carriers whereas it did depend on the power of excitation beam. Model calculations of absorption show qualitative agreement with the experimental data.

Opis:
Systematic studies of neutral heavy-hole excitonic line energy changes in a strong excitation regime were carried out by means of a pump-probe method for quantum wells containing a 2D gas of free holes. Energy shift of $X_{e1hh1}$ line was analyzed for different excitation energies at fixed delay between pump and probe pulses, also under external magnetic field. It was observed that this shift depends not only on the density of created excitons but also directly on the pump energy. In co-polarization configuration for excitation energy below an absorption resonance the energetic blue shift rises linearly with the elevated exciton density (localized excitons are created). For energies slightly above the resonance, the blue shift diminishes dramatically in spite of high exciton density present (delocalized excitons are created). Model absorption calculations are in qualitative agreement with the experimental data.

Opis:
We report on cw optical experiments performed in a semiconductor microcavity containing a single quantum well in the strong coupling regime. Angularly resolved photoluminescence measurements under non-resonant excitation show the collapse of a relaxation bottleneck as the excitation power is increased. As a result, the emission close to k$\text{}_{∥}$=0 presents a non-linear behavior. In a two-beam experiment we resonantly inject polaritons at k$\text{}_{∥}$=0 and show that relaxation from states with large in-plane wave vector toward k$\text{}_{∥}$=0 is stimulated by the polariton final state population.

Opis:
We review the dynamics of some of the more relevant optical processes in semiconductor quantum wells. We concentrate on the linear regime and study the time evolution of the light emission, using time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. In intrinsic materials, excitonic effects determine their optical properties. Here we describe the formation and recombination of excitons, and the dependence of these processes on lattice temperature, exciton density, and energy of the excitation light pulses. We also describe the dynamics of the exciton's spin by optical orientation experiments. We discuss the principal mechanisms responsible for the spin flip of the excitons and clarify the role of the exciton localization. Finally, we will show that exciton-exciton interaction produces a breaking of the spin degeneracy in two-dimensional semiconductors. In doped quantum wells, we show that the two spin components of an optically created two-dimensional electron gas are well described by the Fermi-Dirac distributions with a common temperature but different chemical potentials. The rate of the spin depolarization of the electron gas is found to be independent of the mean electron kinetic energy but accelerated by thermal spreading of the carriers.

Opis:
We study an ultracold dilute gas of bosonic atoms in an optical lattice induced by intersecting laser beams. As a first approximation we neglect confining potential and atom-atom interactions. In this case the Gross-Pitaevskij equation reduces to simple Mathieu equation. Upon choosing periodic boundary conditions this problem has well known periodic solution. This simple picture allows to demonstrate localization of the wave packet and formation of the band structure. We calculate spectrum of the excited states as a function of the strength of modulating potential and using a standard adiabaticity criterion we predict the most efficient way to ramp up optical lattice, without higher state excitation. Finally, we discuss the influence of the atom-atom interaction (nonlinearity) on the adiabaticity of the process.

Opis:
It has been generally recognized that excited 9,9'-bianthryl in polar solvents achieves a partial charge-separation state, instead of a complete electron transfer state, even in high-polarity solvents like acetonitrile at room temperature. However, here we firstly found that 9,9'-bianthryl reaches the complete electron transfer state in a polar alkanenitrile solvent at lower temperature as elucidated by means of transient absorption and steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy. A stepwise increase in the fluorescence Stokes shift observed when temperature was reduced implies a formation of a state more polar than that dominated at the room temperature. At low temperature (165 K), the transient absorption spectra of 9,9'-bianthryl in butyronitrile gradually changed from the spectrum ascribed to the partial change-separation state toward that of the complete electron transfer state. We suggest that at low temperature, due to the increase in the solvent polarity, the energetically stabilized electron transfer state should be predominant.

Opis:
The nature of sharp emission lines which are present in macro-luminescence experiments on a type-II GaAs/AlAs double quantum well structure is discussed. The experiments, which also include micro-lumines- cence measurements, allowed us to conclude that the sharp emission lines observed originate from lateral GaAlAs islands of a fewμm in diameter. They serve as efficient type-I recombination centers for indirect excitons and/or carriers which diffuse in the GaAs/AlAs QW structure and strongly affect the emission processes observed in macro-luminescence experiments. These traps can easily be filled with electron-hole pairs, giving rise to the formation of neutral excitons as well as more complex excitonic molecules. Magneto-luminescence spectra from single islands resemble those observed for natural quantum dots formed in narrow GaAs quantum wells.
