Opis:
This study focuses on production and characterization of sodium silicate cullet by using trona. Sodium silicate cullets are generally produced by direct fusion of precisely measured portions of soda ash (Na₂CO₃) and quartz (SiO₂). In this study trona (Na₂CO₃· NaHCO₃· 2H₂O) was used as a source of soda ash. For this purpose trona sample was first characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, differential thermal analysis/thermal gravimetry and chemical analyses. Different batches were prepared and fused to produce sodium silicates varying in ratio Na₂O· nSiO₂. Produced samples were evaluated by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that trona can be used instead of soda ash to produce sodium silicate cullets.

The constant adsorption energy surfaces for hydrogen adsorbed on Si- and C-terminated hexagonal 4H-SiC{0001} surfaces have been calculated within density functional theory framework. The two unreconstructed and one reconstructed √3 × √3 surfaces were taken into account. We show that on all surfaces there is a global energy minimum indicating the most favourable adsorption site corresponding to H atom adsorption on-top of the topmost substrate layer atom. In case of reconstructed surface, there is another small and shallow local minimum. Moreover, the diffusion barrier is much higher at reconstructed surface than at unreconstructed ones.

Opis:
Optical constants, dispersion and oscillator parameters of different thicknesses of amorphous $Ge_{25}Cd_5Se_{70}$ films have been deposited onto glass substrates using thermal evaporation technique. The optical constants have been investigated by optical spectrophotometry measurements. The straight forward analysis proposed by Swanepoel, which is based on the use of the extremes of the interference fringes has been used in order to derive the refractive index and the film thickness in μm range. The refractive index could be extrapolated by the Cauchy dispersion relationship over the whole spectral range, which extended from 400 to 2500 nm. It is observed that, refractive index n increases with the film thickness. The possible optical transition is found to be allowed indirect transition with energy gap increase from 1.915 to 1.975 eV with increasing film thickness. The dispersion of the refractive index is discussed in terms of the Wemple-DiDomenico single oscillator model. The interband oscillator wavelength, the average oscillator strength, and the optical conductivity were estimated for different thicknesses of amorphous $Ge_{25}Cd_5Se_{70}$ films.

Opis:
The fraction of positronium formation (f$\text{}_{ps}$) has been calculated in Ge(110), Ge(111), Si(110) and Si(111) surfaces by solving the diffusion equation for positrons in semiconductors and by setting up the rate equation to describe the processes that are supposed to occur when a thermalised positron encounters the surface including the trapping of positrons in neutral and negative vacancies. Certain parameters used in the evaluation of f$\text{}_{ps}$, e.g., the bulk annihilation rate (λ$\text{}_{s}$), the positron diffusion length (L$\text{}_{+}$), the diffusion coefficient (D$\text{}_{+}$) and the implantation profile parameter (A), have been taken from the experiments. The calculated values of f$\text{}_{ps}$ as a function of incident positron energy and temperature in Ge(110) and Si(111) have been compared with the experimental results. It has been found that in general the calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental ones. The calculation also confirms that the trapping rate of positrons into negative vacancy has a T$\text{}^{-1}\text{}^{/}\text{}^{2}$ dependence with respect to the temperature.

Opis:
Using a monoenergetic positron beam, annealing study of the Al/n-GaSb system was performed by monitoring the Doppler broadening of the annihilation radiation as a function of the positron implanting energy. The S-parameter against positron energy data was successfully fitted by a three-layer model (Al/interface/GaSb). The annealing out of the open volume defects in the polycrystalline Al layer was revealed by the decrease in the S-parameter and the increase in the effective diffusion length of the Al layer. For the as-deposited samples, a 5 nm interfacial region with S-parameter larger than those of the Al overlayer and the bulk was identified. After the 400ºC annealing, this interfacial region extends to over 40 nm and its S-parameter dramatically drops. This is possibly due to the new phase formation at the interface. Annealing behaviors of S$\text{}_{B}$ and L$\text{}_{+,B}$ of the GaSb bulk showed the annealing out of positron traps (possibly the V$\text{}_{Ga}$-related defect) at 250ºC. However, a further annealing at 400ºC induces the formation of positron traps, which are possibly of another kind of V$\text{}_{Ga}$-related defect and the positron shallow trap GaSb antisite.

Opis:
Biological properties of synthetic polymers can be improved by surface modification with the use of liquid oxidizers. A resorbable biomedical polymer - poly(glycolide-co-ε-caprolactone) (PGCL) was incubated in 0.1 M NaOH for 2, 6, 16, and 24 h, followed by excessive washing and drying in vacuum. Surface properties of the materials before and after modification were evaluated: wettability by contact angle measurements, topography by atomic force microscopy, and chemical functions by infrared spectroscopy. Applied modification improved wettability of PGCL due to creation of chemical oxygenated functionalities, and resulted in a slight alternation of the surface topography and roughness. In order to determine whether NaOH incubation caused structural changes in bulk of PGCL, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and viscosity measurements were performed. It was found that the ortho-positronium lifetime in PGCL declines as a function of modification time. It suggests that NaOH incubation causes structural changes in PGCL not only on the surface but also in bulk.

Opis:
Various commercial and industrial properties of polymeric materials can be developed by the way of purposeful synthesis. For example, there are polymeric materials of extremely developed intrinsic microporosity. In attempts to further develop membrane properties (permeability and selectivity), the researchers artificially increase the pore sizes by various external influences, such as plastification by saturation of polymers with gases, sometimes in supercritical state, filling of a polymer with some non-organic components (zeolites). Sometimes, porosity of the composition appears to become higher than that of the components. This porosity, in difference with intrinsic one, can be called externally affected. The reason of these phenomena is not always clear, and in order to get some ideas in this field we suggest an experimental study using a combination of the two genetically interconnected (by spur processes) methods: positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy and thermostimulated luminescence. This paper summarizes recently published and completely new results of the authors in order to illustrate the benefits of this experimental approach.

Opis:
Changes of the poly(L-lactide-co-glycolide) structure as a function of degradation time in phosphate-buffered saline for 7 weeks were investigated by gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, nuclear magnetic resonance ($\text{}^{1}$H NMR), and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. Surface properties as wettability by sessile drop and topography by atomic force microscopy were also characterized. Chain-scission of polyester bonds in hydrolysis reaction causes a quite uniform decrease in molecular weight, and finally results in an increase in semicrystallinity. Molecular composition of the copolymer and water contact angle do not change considerably during degradation time. Atomic force microscopy studies suggest that the copolymer degrades by "in bulk" mechanism. The average size of the molecular-level free volume holes declines considerably after one week of degradation and remains constant till the sixth week of degradation. The free volume fraction decreases as a function of degradation time.
