The static criterion that the amplitude of the principal peak of the liquid structure factor has a constant value along the freezing line and the onset of freezing are studied from the structure factors and the static dielectric functions of halide salts interacting via the effective pair potentials through the hypernetted-chain approximation. It is observed that the criterion above is restricted to the effective charge difference. The critical value of plasma parameter at freezing is affected by the mobility and number concentration of anions and cations. The distribution of the value of the static dielectric function closest to the wave number axis in the negative region is also determined by the charge difference and the ordering of ions and related to the onset of freezing.

In this study, the mechanical properties of soda-lime-silica glasses were investigated by using micro-Vickers indentation tests, while varying the amount of peanut shell powder added to the glass. Peanut shell powder was obtained by grinding peanut shells. It was added as a dopant to glass at 0.5-5 wt.%, with the final glass samples being produced by melting. Peanut shell addition had led to a decreased density of the soda-lime-silica glasses, and X-ray diffraction data of the peanut shell-doped soda-lime-silica glasses indicated the presence of two crystalline phases, namely, anorthite (Na_{0.45}(Ca_{0.55}Al_{1.55}Si_{2.45}O₈) and magnesium aluminum silicate (MgAl₂Si₃O_{10})₆. The Young's modulus values of the soda-lime-silica glasses increased along with the amount of peanut shell powder added. Peanut shell addition to the soda-lime-silica glasses has also caused increased hardness. Fracture toughness values of these glass samples were in the range of 0.91-1.04 MPa m^{1/2}. Thus, the mechanical properties (e.g. E and K_{C}) of soda-lime-silica glasses could be enhanced through peanut shell addition.

Opis:
In this paper we present the results of dielectric measurements of liquid crystal (LC) 5*CB arranged in porous matrices with a pore diameter of 100 and 20 nm. We analyse the effect of the surface interactions on the dynamics of the molecules. The results are compared with the results for bulk 5*CB. The most important observation is the blocking of the phase transition of 5*CB into the solid phase in the matrix with pore diameter of 20 nm.

Glass-ceramic materials were developed from gabbro including MgO and $Al_2O_3$ additives. Heat treatments for phase transformation from glassy matrix to glass-ceramic were carried out at 1000C for 3 h. X-ray diffraction studies conducted on the glass-ceramic samples revealed that the phases formed in the glass-ceramics were cordierite, anorthite, diopsitic augite, forsterite and andesine. Glass and glass-ceramic materials were tested for wear properties against a harder alumina counterface using by a ball-on-disc tribometer at dry sliding condition. Wear tests were realized under the loads of 2.5, 5, and 7.5 N and at the sliding speeds of 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 m/s. Wear rate of the glass and glass-ceramics ranged from 7.324 × $10^{-7}$ and 2.150 × $10^{-3}$-9.971 × $10^{-7}$ and 4.982 × $10^{-5} mm^3$/m, respectively. It was shown that the crystallization treatment caused the decrease of wear rate.

Thermal properties of glasses from the system $Ag_x(As_{40}S_{30}Se_{30})_{100-x}$ for x=0, 0.5, 1, 3, and 5 at.% were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. The DSC curves were obtained under non-isothermal conditions which allowed determination of the glass transition temperature $T_{g}$ (onset temperature), crystallization temperature $T_{p}$ (corresponding to the crystallization peak maximum), melting temperature $T_{m}$, crystallization enthalpy $H_{c}$, and melting enthalpy $H_{m}$. The DSC curves obtained at the same heating rate were analyzed in order to study the variation of glass transition temperature with Ag concentration. Observed $T_{g}$ shift toward higher values, with increase in the heating rate, is in agreement with the Lasocka equation. Samples with 3 at.% and 5 at.% Ag were further thermally treated at different heating rates with the aim of analyzing kinetic processes of crystallization. The Moynihan and Kissinger models were used to calculate the activation energy of glass transition and activation energy of crystallization. For the samples that showed the crystallization processes an assessment of the thermal stability was done based on different criteria.

Our finding of the current spike effect highlighted for the first time in 2009 offers an enhanced understanding of the link between nanoscale mechanical deformation and electrical behavior, and ultimately suggests key advances in unique phase-change applications in future electronics. Certainly, crystal imperfections affect the properties of the nanoparticles themselves, e.g., their biocompatibility and biodegradability. The potential role of dislocations having a profound impact on the use of Si nanoparticles was largely overlooked, since plastic deformation of bulk Si is dominated by amorphization and phase transformations. Here we show an effect of bulk → nanoparticle transition (deconfinement) on incipient plasticity of Si-nanovolume. Our results provide a fresh insight into the dilemma concerning dislocation or phase transformation origin of nanoscale plastic deformation of semiconductor nanoobjects.

Monte Carlo simulations are used to analyse the behaviour of the extended Ashkin-Teller model in two (2D) and three (3D) dimensions from the ratio of the square of the second moment of the order parameter to its fourth moment. In the current study, the effect of boron waste addition on some properties of fly ash based glass and glass-ceramics were investigated. The powder compositions including 10, 30, and 50 wt% boron waste was prepared. All the investigated compositions were melted at 1500C by using electrical furnaces. Melting structures were cast into the graphite mold. Thus, fly ash-boron waste based glass materials were produced. To transform the glass-ceramic, crystallization process was performed. Crystallization and glass-transition temperatures were determined by differential thermal analysis. Highly dense and crystalline materials, predominantly composed of diopside and augite together with tincalconite and residual glassy phase, were detected by X-ray diffraction analysis after heat treatment at 800, 900, and 1000C for 1 h. For the glass and glass-ceramic samples, mechanical tests such as hardness and fracture toughness were realized. A boron waste addition has a positive effect on the hardness of the specimens unlike the fracture toughness results. Furthermore, produced glass-ceramic materials were characterized via scanning electron microscopy.

Opis:
We report the observation of the size evolution of the laser light formed clusters. A cell containing sodium vapor and the buffer gas (He) under high pressure was used in the experiment. Changes of the radius and of the density of transient clusters were observed via the time evolution of the intensity of right-angle scattered light. The rate of the cluster radius growth was found to vary from 0.012 to 0.1 μm/s.

Opis:
2,2-dimethylbutan-1-ol, known as neohexanol, was studied by adiabatic calorimetry and dielectric spectroscopy. Details of complex solid state polymorphism and relaxational dynamics were identified and described. System of phases of neohexanol was found to be monotropic with three orientationally disordered crystalline phases besides isotropic liquid and ordered crystal. Moreover, two subsequent glass transition anomalies of heat capacity $C_{p}(T)$ were detected on heating in one of the supercooled orientationally disordered crystalline phases. Thermodynamical properties of neohexanol are described in relation to the dielectric relaxation processes found.

On the basis of dilatometric, optical, and dielectric investigations of (NH$\text{}_{3}$C$\text{}_{2}$H$\text{}_{5}$)$\text{}_{2}$CuCl$\text{}_{4}$ crystals the existence of phase transitions at T$\text{}_{1}$=364 and T$\text{}_{2}$=356 K was confirmed. Anomalous behaviour of the thermal expansion coefficient and optical birefringence around T$\text{}_{3}$=330 K was related to earlier unknown phase transition. Besides, it was shown that these crystals are characterised by considerable protonic conductivity, the nature of which is fairly well explained in the framework of Grotthus mechanism of proton transport.

This paper presents the results of investigations of the dielectric properties of NH$\text{}_{2}$(CH$\text{}_{3}$)$\text{}_{2}$Al(SO$\text{}_{4}$)$\text{}_{2}$×6H$\text{}_{2}$O crystals performed in a wide frequency range. In particular, the temperature and frequency dependences of the dielectric permittivity were measured in the region of ferroelectric phase at different rates of temperature change. The thermal dipole relaxation with a critical slowing-down at T$\text{}_{c1}$ was observed at comparatively low frequencies of measuring field. The relaxation connected with the domain freezing takes place at still lower frequencies (below 100 kHz) and was found to be strongly dependent on the rate of the temperature change. It was shown that deuteration results in a noticeable change of the parameters characterising this process including the temperature of domain wall freezing.

Opis:
A method of visualization of two-dimensional systems of particles in a large time scale molecular dynamics with application to the domain reorientation process in 2D Lennard-Jones system is presented. The described processing is general and can be used in comparing experimental results of atomic force microscopy with the results calculated using a computer as well as for predicting new phenomena. Domain reorientation process in 2D Lennard-Jones system approaching equilibrium is presented and confronted with the Fourier analysis of the data obtained for different initial parameters and at different states of aggregation. New border domain features accompanying this process are discussed.

The low temperature behavior of the KTaO$\text{}_{3}$ type incipient ferroelectric crystals is of constant interest. The quantum fluctuations reduce the transition to the ferroelectric state in these crystals. It is possible that the small amount of the dopant Li$\text{}^{+}$ can lead, through the elastic interactions, to local glass-like short-range order or even to the relaxor ferroelectric order for x>2.6%. We presented that the low lithium doped x=0.005 KTaO$\text{}_{3}$ crystals exhibit the dielectric dispersion ofε andε", suggesting the glass-like behavior in the low temperature range.

There has been a growing interest in the synthesis and characterization of amorphous chalcogenide glasses due to their importance in preparing electronic memories, grating, switching devices and their optical applications as good IR transmitting materials. The study of the glass transformations and crystallization processes in the amorphous systems is interesting not only from the fundamental aspect of establishing the reaction mechanism of crystal nucleation and growth, but also from a technological point of view. The present research work is concentrated on the study of glass transition and crystallization behavior in $Ga_{15}Se_{85 - x}Pb_x$ with x=0, 3, and 6 chalcogenide glasses by differential scanning calorimetry. Their amorphous nature has been verified by X-ray diffraction. The differential scanning calorimetry experiments were performed at different continuous heating rates (5 to 25 K/min). The glass transition temperature (T_{g}) and crystallization temperature $(T_{c})$ of these glasses has been determined from differential scanning calorimetry thermograms. The dependence of $T_{g}$ and $T_{c}$ on the heating rate (β) has been used for the determination of different crystallization parameters such as the activation energy of crystallization (Δ $E_{c}$), the activation energy for structural relaxation (Δ $E_{t}$) and the order parameter (n). The results of crystallization were discussed on the basis of different models such as Kissinger's approach and modification for non-isothermal crystallization in addition to Johnson, Mehl, Ozawa and Avrami.
