Opis:
The aim of this research was to determine the 3D crack path and the related growth micromechanism in specimens made of the ferritic-pearlitic steel loaded in modes II and III. Crack closure effects were minimized at the beginning of the experiments by a special technique of generation of precracks in order to measure effective values of fatigue thresholds. Dependences of the crack growth rate on the stress intensity factor range were plotted for the near-threshold region. The effective mode III threshold $\DeltaK_text{IIIeff,th}=4.4 MPam^{1//2}$ was found to be higher than that for mode II ($\DeltaK_\text{IIeff,th}=2.9 MPam^{1//2}$, the theory predicts $3.1 MPam^{1//2}$) which is in agreement with the results for other metallic materials and available theoretical models. Fractographical observations in three dimensions revealed that the remote mode II cracks deflected towards the opening mode I by the mean angle ≈50°, which is significantly different from the low-angle deflections (coplanar growth) previously observed in the ARMCO iron. The simple linear elastic fracture mechanics based criterion for growth of a mode I branch at the crack front loaded in mode II was fulfilled.

Opis:
Being a light metallic engineering material with low density, high specific stiffness and strength, aluminium alloys are promising materials in the fields of aerospace, military and automotive industries. Consumption of aluminium alloys in the forms of sheets and plates has generally increased in global markets over the past 45 years. Rolling directions affect the anisotropy and mechanical properties of the aluminium alloys. In this work, the plane strain fracture toughness KIC values of 7075 aluminium alloy were measured in plates of three directions and six orientations (L-T, T-L, T-S, S-T, L-S, S-L), using the standard (ASTM E399) compact tension specimens. The results indicate that dependence of fracture toughness of 7075-T651 aluminium alloy on rolling direction is obvious and that KIC values of T-S and L-T orientations are the highest.

Opis:
A crack in cubic boron nitride crystal was simulated within the ab initio density-functional theory. The lattice constant, critical stress intensity factor K$\text{}_{c}$, which describes crack creation stress, and fracture surface energy Γ were calculated from the elongated 2×6×1 supercell and these quantities agree quite well with the experimental data. We conclude that density-functional theory can be used to estimate crack's material constants.

Opis:
$Al_2O_3//SiC$ particulate reinforced metal matrix composites were produced by a stir casting process. The $Al_2O_3//SiC$ powder mix was prepared by reaction of aqueous solution of aluminium sulphate, ammonium sulphate and water containing SiC particles at 1200°C. 10 wt% of this hybrid ceramic powder with different sized SiC particles was added to a liquid matrix alloy during a mechanical stirring between solidus and liquidus under inert conditions. Dry sliding wear tests were conducted with a pin-on-disk friction and wear tester. The morphologies of the worn surfaces were examined using a scanning electron microscope to observe the wear characteristics and investigate the wear mechanism. An optical microscope was used to examine the precipitations of the hybrid ceramic reinforced metal matrix composites after wear tests at room temperature under dry conditions. It was found that hybrid and bimodal particle reinforcement decreased weight loss especially when SiC powder with larger grain size was used. Microstructural examination showed that besides occurring coarse SiC particle reinforcement, a fine alumina particle reinforcement phase was observed within the aluminium matrix (A332). The improvement in wear resistance of the hybrid ceramic reinforced metal matrix composites could be attributed to the ability of the larger SiC particles to carry a greater portion of the applied load, as well as to the function of the larger SiC particles in protecting the smaller alumina particles from being gouged out during the wear process. Furthermore, the incorporation of hybrid and bimodal particles increased hardness of the composites with respect to the composite with fully small sized particles.

Opis:
Three simple and promising methods to grow high-quality, device-relevant gallium nitride heterostructures on silicon are presented: strain-compensation, patterning, and the insertion of low-temperature AlN interlayers. With all methods device-quality GaN can be grown. While patterning is especially interesting for light emitters, low-temperature AlN interlayers can be used universally not only for transistor structures, which require good insulation of the active layers to the Si substrate, but also for vertically contacted LEDs when doped with Si. Low-temperature AlN interlayers do not only reduce tensile stress but also improve GaN properties and strongly reduce the threading dislocation density from 10$\text{}^{10}$ cm$\text{}^{-2}$ to 10$\text{}^{9}$ cm$\text{}^{-2}$ for 2 low-temperature AlN layers. Additionally, the layer quality can be enhanced by using in situ Si$\text{}_{x}$N$\text{}_{y}$ masks. Best crack-free layers with dislocation densities around 10$\text{}^{9}$ cm$\text{}^{-2}$ show X-ray rocking-curve widths around 400 arcsec and narrow photoluminescence. So far, best LEDs on Si(111) have an optical output power of 0.42 mW at 20 mA and 498 nm which is enough for simple signal applications.

Opis:
A series of C45 steel samples was burnished by shot peening with varying time of treatment. The samples were investigated by nondestructive positron annihilation techniques: angular correlations of two-quantum annihilation radiation and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. To determine residual stresses present under burnished surface the same samples were studied by destructive Davidenkov method. Change of absolute value of the weighted average of residual stresses over positron range in the series of the samples is in good agreement with change of S/W ratio obtained by angular correlations of two-quantum annihilation radiation. Both parameters increase during first 10 minutes of shot peening and then stabilize. Positron annihilation lifetime spectra allowed to identify two types of structural defects: smaller ones like vacancies or dislocations and bigger - probably clusters of vacancies. Increase in shot peening time causes reduction of positron trapping rate and lifetime rise in bigger defects.
